Video: Obama says to wait for facts before reaching conclusions

Barack Obama gave his second statement on the Fort Hood massacre, and this one went better than his first. He cautioned Americans to let law-enforcement agencies do their job in investigating the 13 murders apparently committed by Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan and to avoid “jumping to conclusions” based on incomplete data. Although this statement has prompted angry responses in e-mail, in this case Obama’s correct — almost anticlimactically so:
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
President Barack Obama said Friday the entire nation is grieving for those slain at Fort Hood, and he urged people not to jump to conclusions while law enforcement officers investigate the shootings.
Obama met Friday morning with FBI Director Robert Mueller and other federal leaders to get an update on what they’ve learned. Thirteen people were killed and 30 others injured in the shooting rampage at the Texas Army post on Thursday. The suspected shooter is an Army psychiatrist; his motive remains unclear.
“We don’t know all the answers yet. And I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts,” Obama said in a Rose Garden statement otherwise devoted to the economy.
“What we do know is that there are families, friends and an entire nation grieving right now for the valiant men and women who came under attack yesterday,” the president said.
Of course we shouldn’t jump to any conclusions, although the impulse to do so is very, very tempting. What do we have? A single data point on a mass shooting where the suspect apparently yelled “Allahu akbar!” before killing 13 people. That could mean a wide range of things, from a conspiracy to commit a series of such attacks, to a militant anti-war action, or to just a lunatic with a religious delusion. That’s why we have law enforcement to investigate crimes — so that conclusions will be based on fact rather than conjecture.
Earlier this year, conservatives howled, and rightly so, when Janet Napolitano issued a report on “right-wing domestic terrorism” that advised law enforcement that opposition to abortion and Obama policies could be indicators of potential extremist violence. The report based that on a couple of lunatics murdering abortionists. It also warned that former combat veterans could fall prey to right-wing militia groups and commit terrorism, based on the single named example of Timothy McVeigh. We were right to criticize that report as entirely conjectural and lacking any specific reasoning. We should not rush to make the same mistake with the Fort Hood massacre.
There is certainly room for criticism of the coverage of the shooting, especially the reluctance of some outlets to report the known facts of Hasan’s circumstances. We deserve to have all the facts presented without bias so as to reach the right conclusions. However, we need to wait for all the facts in order to make sure we do. Rushing to conclusions now does no one any good at all, and almost guarantees that we will reach the wrong ones, such as the one Newsweek waited less than a day to float:
What if Thursday’s atrocious slaughter at Fort Hood only signals that the worst is yet to come? The murder scene yesterday afternoon at the Killeen, Texas, military base, the largest in the country, was heart-wrenching. Details remained murky, but at least 13 are dead and 30 wounded in a killing spree that may momentarily remind us of a reality that most Americans can readily forget: soldiers and their families are living, and bending, under a harrowing and unrelenting stress that will not let up any time soon. And the U.S. military could well be reaching a breaking point as the president decides to send more troops into Afghanistan.
As one person said in Rick Moran’s comments, it reminds me of the conclusion-leaping that took place when the St. Anthony Bridge collapsed in Minneapolis two years ago, which also killed 13 people. The Left didn’t wait for longer than six hours to blame it on Tim Pawlenty’s budget cuts; in the end, it was a design flaw from the original construction that doomed the bridge.
Update: Good point from commenter Dingbat63; Barack Obama should have heeded this advice when he leaped to the conclusion that Cambridge police “acted stupidly” when they arrested Skip Gates. Beer summit!

Its true that not all muslims are terrorists, but in the 21st century is sure seems true that every terrorist is a muslim.

“When I heard of the [Fort Hood] tragedy yesterday, we were in the midst of planning a response to the latest dangerous legislative proposal from the gun lobby in the United States Senate – language to automatically restore access to guns to veterans designated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Justice Department as ‘mentally incapacitated’ or ‘mentally incompetent.’ In light of what happened yesterday – a violent attack by an emotionally unstable soldier – it is even clearer that the proposal being pushed by Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina should be rejected.\”–Public statement by Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun ViolenceMaybe Obama should be talking to his own people about jumping to conclusions based on a single event without waiting for clear evidence.

You’re intentionally blind to people trying to murder you. Get a clue here:
http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/
The only non-Muslim suicide bombers were the Tamil Tigers. And your argument tool is one of saying “well they did it, too”. Doesn’t excuse a damn thing. Islam is based around violent expansion – it says so in their book, and it’s accepted and embraced by islam.
Remember last year when the guy with the islamic TV station, dedicated to fighting prejudice, cut his wife’s head off? They’re lying to you, Bleeds Blue – and you’re being a useful idiot for jihad. Wise up.
Remember, no legal guns allowed. It’s a “gun free zone” – meaning only criminals and terrorists are armed.
When you’re on base getting flu shots or getting your teeth checked to go overseas, you’re in condition white. You’re also totally unarmed.
Combat arms troops go into battle with armor, rifles, guns, knives, and determination. This isn’t the same thing. I’ve been in combat and I’ve been threatened when I was back in the civilian world unarmed – it made me acutely aware that my civvie rifle was unloaded and in the trunk of my car (legal and stupid) and far from where I could reach it.
To make a comparison, it’s like stabbing a UFC fighter in the neck while he’s just hanging out with his friends. He’s not ready to fight, he’s not thinking about fighting, he has no weapons or ability to fight back, and you just sucker-stabbed him in the neck.
It wouldn’t matter if these were the hardest-core grunts or the pogueiest of pogues, what the hell do you want them to do? Jihadi-boy can fire with one, reload with the other, and unless terrain allows an advantage, they’re screwed.
CPL 310 on November 6, 2009 at 4:57 PM
Fair enough. I should have clarified. Acts committed against Americans and/or American soldiers. Excluding anti-abortion extremists. I know it’s painful to admit, but….
Fed45 on November 6, 2009 at 4:58 PM
Did you know, for just one example, that in Pakistan over 80% of the population believes that leaving Islam should be punished by death?
Just because most Muslims don’t kill or subjugate infidels doesn’t mean they don’t approve. If they don’t approve they are apostates.
MB4 on November 6, 2009 at 4:58 PM
Nah… just gotta spin their verbiage a bit…
This guy did this because of Islam… so this apparently declares that they believe Islam to be a mental disorder!
Think about it… Suicide is considered Crazy. Yet suicide bombings are a trademark of Jihadists.
Mass Murderers are often considered insane… or at least pathalogical… yet we see Mass Murders being commited by Jihadist Islamists…
Is that the key to being able to effectivly fight this Political/Economic/Religious belief system? Declare it a Pathology?
/semi sarcastic… or… maybe not…
Romeo13 on November 6, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Don’t jump to conclusions that Obama is competent…until we get all the facts. Then, jump away!
Christien on November 6, 2009 at 5:04 PM
How many people died when the “Piss Christ” debuted? Has the vatican sworn to slay Larry David for his urinating on an icon of Jesus on “Curb Your Enthusiasm?”
Turning the other cheek doesn’t apply when they’re murdering you, dumbass. Nor does being rich or poor hinder or help your ability to reach heaven – it’s acceptance of Jesus as the Savior.
Get some common sense to exercise before you preach about it.
That’s idiocy. A vast number of muslims embrace so-called “honor killings” of female family members, murder homosexuals for their mere existence, practice female genital mutilation, slavery, execution for apostates (as MB4 mentioned) and support terrorism across the globe. Go over to jihadwatch and read up.
Your ignorance of the widespread nature of islamic terror doesn’t negate its existence.
CPL 310 on November 6, 2009 at 5:05 PM
Libs play a perpetual game of ‘Gotcha!’ to justify themselves, and they stubbornly dig in their heels. When that stops working, they change the point of the debate, looking for more “Gotcha!” Nothing ever gets accomplished when dealing with a lib. They want only victory and nothing else.
Liam on November 6, 2009 at 5:09 PM
Don’t jump to conclusions. But also don’t ignore the facts. Islam rewards violence.
hawksruleva on November 6, 2009 at 5:11 PM
Bozo is only saying lets us have the time to craft some plausible propaganda to paint this incident as a criminal event and not yet another terrorist attack carried out by a muslim.
Based on everything reported about what hasan said, wrote and did, this WAS a terrorist attack conducted by a muslim.

I’m 61 years old and still do a PLF if I stumble. I might be able to stab the first UFC fighter in the neck but I doubt I’d get the next 10 – 15 standing next to him. I would expect a room full of “11 Bravos” to gang up on the shooter; training and instincts.
Please don’t misunderstand, I wasn’t being critical just expressing puzzlement. No one knows what they would do in a similar event until they are.

Liam, they should count the unborn baby as an additional victim. The federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act can be used to prosecute members of the military.
Vera on November 6, 2009 at 5:28 PM
I know I’m late to this but AP has this sickening top story telling how Hasan was saying his last good byes and giving neighbors left overs and thanking some of them for being his friend. I am so friggin mad about their attempts at turning this into the Military fault because they treated him so badly. He killed 13 people, injured 30, and murdered an unborn child. Are we living in some sort of upside down World?

Why of course – once again the Right is told to take the high road and don’t overreact like the Left does. Maybe they’ll find a note explaining his reasoning. /s

Our fearless leader has way too much trouble making up his mind on anything unless it’s cutting muslims a break and spending money we don’t have. Although this bastard killed a lot of heros – Obama will not allow the military to give this guy the ultimate punishment.
Timothy McViegh was put to death … but he was White – and so it’s okay.
But Obama will not allow this murderer to be put to death.

You know, the more I read about this, the more pissed off I get. The man was a terrorist. Everyone is standing around crying crocodile tears over his mental health. Let’s call a spade, a spade. This was terrorism by an Islamic fanatic.
Vera on November 6, 2009 at 5:56 PM
The cops acted stupidly yet in this case we shouldn’t jump to conclusion. I’m tired of hearing the media mention post-trauma when this man hasn’t been over seas nor had experienced combat. This was a premeditated effort, he believes suicide bombing is an act of heroism, yet the media does not want to go there. They immediately sweep terrorism, or muslim extremist under the rug because they are afraid of offending these extremists.
jaboba on November 6, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Okay, you’re halfway there.
This is important, so listen: The Koran commands muslims to kill infidels. It is explicit. It is clear. It is concise. There is no way around this as Islam leaves no room for error in the Koran. There was no error; these are the words of Allah Himself. These words are irrefutable, they cannot be changed by decree.
“Common sense” is of no use here: Mohammed, through the Koran, has ordered his followers to kill infidels.

Auwe! You owe me a new monitor.
BTW our Leftist bridge-dwellers here are mostly too young to remember that these bad guys used to be called “terrorists” all the time. The NY Times printed the T-word regularly on Page 1.
But the “T-word” mysteriously disappeared from The Times and many other media outlets in the early 1990s. And by the time 9/11 came along, Reuters refused to report it as a “terrorist attack”.
About 10 years back I had an interesting e-mail exchange with Bill Keller of the NY Fishwrap. He answered all of my questions except one-which was to ask him why the NYT no longer called the bad guys “terrorists”.
He was afraid to tell me that they were afraid to use it.
Del Dolemonte on November 6, 2009 at 6:51 PM
Of those muslims that have read the Koran, few follow the teachings. Imagine if your holy book specifically told you to murder infidels. You can’t go against the teachings of the holy book because it is literally the word of God, not a collection of stories written by man, but the actual voice of God Himself, transcribed by the prophet Mohammed. To speak out against killing infidels is akin to speaking against God Himself.
You will notice that of the few comments made by Islamic groups “against” terrorism, they often say things like “Islam forbids killing of innocents.” Of course, infidels are not “innocent.”

Two things. I note that the Army officer who has been briefing the press says that the “God is Great” utterance was reported by “several witnesses” at the scene but that investigators had not yet determined “if the statement was made.” I’m sorry, but as a former criminal prosecutor, how exactly would the Army suggest we determine whether or not the statement was made other than by reports of the witnesses to the event? This is a mind-numbing position.
As for the joke masquerading as POTUS, I appreciate his newly-found reticence in response to this incident.
I half expected him to say that the police woman who brought this gunman down had “acted stupidly.” After all, that’s been his custom when it involves an incident involving one of his friends, about which he knew squat.
Maybe he’ll have a “beer summit” between Hasan and some of the families of the dead from Ft. Hood.

I read a comment on another blog today which made me think…
Obama has to be VERY careful about what he says regarding this in order to avoid the claim at court-martial of “unlawful command influence.”

Obama was quick to judge the Cambridge cops as “behaving stupidly” when his buddy Henry Louis Gates threw a racist fit. Now, when a Muslim goes jihadi, Obama is dragging his feet to judge the motive for a mass murder that’s plain for all to see.
Whose side is Obama on? Apparently, the side of the racists and jihadis.

Correct.

Political correctness requires the willing suspension of disbelief and common sense.
It requires rules that issue a blanket indictment against anyone who is a Klansman or a “skinhead,” but not a Muslim.
It requires ignoring the written words of the Koran, the spoken words of Islam’s followers and the severed heads of the innocents.
It requires a naiveté that borders on suicidal.
It requires monumental stupidity from people like Dr. Phil.

Do you really think it’s Political Correctness? Perhaps our leaders are trying to convince muslims that when they read the Koran, they shouldn’t take the whole “Kill the infidels” tenet too seriously… After all, it’s the religion of peace.

Were all Germans Nazis? No…
Were all Nazis part of the SS? No…
Were all of the SS those who ran concentration camps? No…
Yet we destroyed the entire Nazi Philosphy and those who adheared to it… along with Germany…
Now… are all in Islam Jihadists? No…
Do all Jihadists wage war against America? No…
Are all Jihadists who wage war against America Terrorists? No…
But I still say we need to treat the Jihadist Islam just as we treated Nazism… or we are doomed.

Romeo13,
You nailed it.

Upfront, I confess I’m sensitive to the issue of terrorists. Not only did I live near the WTC, it turns out I also passed the apartment of two of the terrorists every day on my way to work in Paterson, NJ. I lived a mile from the shop where some of them bought their passports, 5 miles from the motel where Mohammed Atta lived for a year and close by Caldwell Airport, where many of the hijackers took flight raining.
Paterson is the most heavily Muslim populated areas on the east coast.
I lived in Manhattan during the original 1993 WTC bombing attempt with the Blind Cleric and used to teach in Jersey City, just down the street from his mosque. So my antenna are tuned to terrorism and I believe the Fort Hood attack was exactly that.
Here’s a blurb from a terrorism investigator.
What do you think?
“Born in Virginia, sent to medical school by the U.S. Army, the psychiatrist was chastised for proselytizing to his patients about Islam. Asked his nationality, he didn’t identify himself as an American but as a Palestinian. He appeared pleased by the shooting death of a Little Rock Army recruiter in June and reportedly was heard saying, ‘maybe people should strap bombs on themselves and go to Times Square.’ In the fateful moment before he opened fire on his unarmed victims, he shouted Allahu Akhbar!’”
And our Mf***ing BM is spinning this as a tragedy for a guy suffering from pre-PTSD. Nothing about the 13 dead, their families, their communities, the military in general. Not even a visit by Squat. It is despicable. He can fly half way around the world to humiliate, insult and apologize for America but can’t spare an hour to comfort Americans.
IMHO – this is Squat’s Katrina moment. And for him to say we shouldn’t jump to conclusions after seeing HIM do exactly that in the Gates case is beyond hypocritical. It is evil.

The trouble is, there is one Koran. It is the literal word of God. It cannot be changed. Those waging jihad are doing what Allah has instructed. Those not waging jihad are apostates or infidels.
What will happen when more muslims actually read the Koran and follow its instructions?

I heard a military commander on talk radio a while ago and he came right out and said Fort Hood was a terrorist attack and the military is being infiltrated.
Period.
He didn’t exhibit the slightest bit of doubt about it and he spent 20 years in the army, a high-ranking officer, i think his name was lee.

The fact of the matter is, and there is no getting around this, Hasan is a pious Muslim who took it on himself to kill in the name of his religion. It wasn’t “Allan’s AntFarm” he yelled before gunning down or wounding over 50. Terrorist plot or not, this presents a face of Islam that the PC crowd chooses to ignore and deliberately obscures.
Granted there have been a couple of shootings in Christian churches but the gunmen in those cases were never killing in the name of Christ. I’ve posted it before and I will post it again. This bloodlust and killing in the name of Allah has to be stamped out by the supposedly “good Americans” who never open their damned mouths after these events and condemn the actions. Sure they condemn the killings but it never goes so far as to say that the killer was acting outside of Islam. This sounds harsh but Muslim-Americans deserve second-class status in America until they stop killing off people in the name of their religion of peace.

Funny how being personaly close makes you much more aware of issues that most consider National…
Turns out the Kids who commited Columbine here in Colorado, worked as delivery boys at the Pizza place that I order Pizza from… I have no doubt that some of my tip money went to buy those guns…
Brings the issue home… litteraly.

And it shows. Why do you think he scrambled to get up to Walter Reed today and why he’s forcing himself on the FT Hood memorial ceremony.

Muslims cannot speak out against the killing of infidels. If they do they are speaking against the Koran, against God Himself.

you got that right HH

If Hasan comes out his coma, I just hope Obama doesn’t have him to the White House for a beer.

Nazism was also somthing of a religion….
Shintoism WAS a religion….
Communism was a religion without a God…
We HAVE destroyed “Philosphys” before…
Islam is not compatable with our Constitution. It does NOT have equal rights, religious freedom, free speech, and if you are a true Moslem, then Religious law TRUMPS Secular law.
IMO, after reading the Koran, I don’t see HOW you can be a devote Moslem, and also an American. The Oaths you take (Pledge of Allegiance, oath of Citizenship, let alone the oath you take in the Military VS Islam Laws) are incompatable… you must be telling a lie in One, or the Other…
Romeo13 on November 6, 2009 at 7:38 PM
Then they don’t deserve full status in this country. Americans don’t kill one another over which God is supreme.
