Video: Jon Stewart reveals the plot against Glenn Beck

posted at 6:32 pm on November 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

In a different age, SNL would have covered this ground weeks or months ago; as it is, they can’t even field a decent impression of the president anymore. Like many SNL skits, this is twice as long as it should have been, but … it has its moments, especially when Stewart apes Beck’s mannerisms. Too bad he’s not more of an impersonator or else he could have taken a shot at that Kermit voice Beck does when he wants to mock people he disagrees with.

One glaring flaw: Not nearly enough props.

It amuses me when TV folks… including people like O’Reily, spend more time talking about OTHER Media people than about any Issue, Politician… or anyone else.

Its like there is nothing outside of media…

Romeo13 on November 6, 2009 at 6:39 PM

did you notice that everybody (in stewart’s liberal audience) was geting the joke?

lots of beck watchers out there.

darkegop on November 6, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Watched 2 minutes and not once did Jon Stewart say AMERICA.

fourdeucer on November 6, 2009 at 6:40 PM

Beck is worthy of Jon. Other way around? Not so much.

clorensen on November 6, 2009 at 6:40 PM

Knowing Beck’s history of replaying and laughing along with Stephen Colbert’s ripping into him, I would surmise that Beck got a good chuckle out of this. As I watched it last night, I was thinking about all that was missing was the Red Phone.

I bet Stewart has been working on this for quite a while, and just waiting for the right moment to tweak it and do it.

I just find that they destroy the messenger without debating the issues of said messenger. so that the greater message is under-towed by stupidity. which is what the Liberals want.

stewart can be an awfully funny dude. then again, he can be just plain awful.

i give him props for this one–not imaginative, but well done.

GoodSamaritan on November 6, 2009 at 6:43 PM

I agree with AP. This was actually fairly entertaining, but it did go long. I’m sure Beck probably enjoyed this himself, so why shouldn’t we?

therightscoop on November 6, 2009 at 6:43 PM

You know, one of Beck’s most winning qualities is his sense of humor about himself. I’ll bet he enjoyed this if he saw it.

Speaking of Kermit…did anyone see the clip last night on O’Reilly? Sesame Street has now gotten into the business of politics, and a sketch done with muppets trashed Fox News.

I’m sending letters. My tax dollars help fund Public Television. If it can’t stay out of politics, and insists on swinging liberal all of the damn time….it’s time for only liberal dollars to be used to fund it.

Now considering how tight liberals are with their own money…I’d say PBS tanks before the year is out, if I got my wish. ;)

Jon Stewart is trying to Kill Glenn Beck by getting him to laugh and rip open his appendicitis scar.

Jon Stewart is trying to kill Glenn Beck!!!!

portlandon on November 6, 2009 at 6:46 PM

Cringeworthy.
Did it get funny at any point?

justltl on November 6, 2009 at 6:46 PM

Some of the audience got it, but I think a lot of them didn’t and were just laughing because they knew there was something funny, they just didn’t know what.

TDBURN on November 6, 2009 at 6:47 PM

Considering how much Stewart hates Beck’s politics and probably thinks he’s bad for the country, that was surprisingly good-spirited.

YYZ on November 6, 2009 at 6:47 PM

Didn’t watch it all but from what I saw you would have to be a regular Glen Beck watcher to see what he was trying to do, and if you were a regular watcher then you would see how Jon’s attempts fail miserably.

Rose on November 6, 2009 at 6:47 PM

Jon Stewart nailed Beck’s paranoia. However, Allahpundit is right Stewart is not a good impersonator.

terryannonline on November 6, 2009 at 6:48 PM

It is actually kind of clever on Stewarts part. He does have the mannerisims down pretty good.

milwife88 on November 6, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Too cool…

d1carter on November 6, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Some of the audience got it, but I think a lot of them didn’t and were just laughing because they knew there was something funny, they just didn’t know what.

Not sure there. Even if the audience doesn’t watch Beck on a regular basis, those exaggerated mannerisms are the stuff of YouTube clips, often with snarky pop up bubbles.

JamesLee on November 6, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Is Jon short for something?

Or of?

profitsbeard on November 6, 2009 at 6:52 PM

There was so much possibility and Stewart was an EPIC FAIL.

Nothing was funny in this skit. I thought the brief SNL skit of Beck was way funnier.

terryannonline on November 6, 2009 at 6:52 PM

I do love the voices the Beck, Stu and opps, I have forgotten the other guy’s name, do on the radio. It’s funny when they call each other racists and haters.

cubachi on November 6, 2009 at 6:52 PM

I thought it was brilliantly written….it’s Jon’s “acting” that killed it.

terryannonline on November 6, 2009 at 6:53 PM

I actually bumped into this live last night and found it to be very funny. I’ll choose to fall back on the ‘imitation is the most sincere form of flattery’, even though I know it doesn’t apply here.

Beck is great, I think he does a great job doing what he does and I support him fully. But his mannerisms are ripe for satire, as are most successful entertainers.

Stewart jumped the shark a long, long time ago in my opinion, but the ACORN bit and this tribute to Beck have been welcome asides from his usual stupidity.

galtg on November 6, 2009 at 7:05 PM

My political biases require me to insist anything from the opposite side the of spectrum is completely unfunny.

Additionally, I can conveniently do this without even watching the skit.

TheUnrepentantGeek on November 6, 2009 at 7:09 PM

Just curious. In 11 months of the One, has Stewart mocked him on any issue? Just once?

Andy in Agoura Hills on November 6, 2009 at 7:09 PM

Unusually long bit for The Daily Show. Very good in spots though would have been better if edited down. Beck can take it as flattery that Stewart rarely plays characters on the show but evidently put a lot of work into spoofing him.

dedalus on November 6, 2009 at 7:10 PM

Jon Stewart is to comedy what Leni Riefenstahl was to cinema – a totally compromised, cheerleading hack.

AP, you are as naive as you sometimes sound, or is GB simply someone, like Jon Stewart, you don’t care for either? Or a combination of both?

This is not a harmless gag on Beck. This is a hit piece on his politics – namely small government libertarianism. Had GB said nothing about obama and his administration, a piece like this would never be created, regardless of the Kermit noises he makes. If he spent his time going after the right, there would be no “clever” mocking of him.

The Left knows, as well all do, that humor is a powerful tool for neutering your opponents. That was the reason behind the Daily Show – a humorless take at the news – from a lefty perspective – for the purpose of connecting with the younger voter.

Allahpundit on November 6, 2009 at 6:43 PM

No doubt. The really sad part is that I don’t think Stewart’s audience watches enough of Beck to catch all the funny bits. The crowed barely laughed at the “old books” being dog-eared to death, with post-its poking out every which way. That’s classic Beckian visual aid stuff, and it was as if it went right over the crowds head. Same thing when Stewart put on the dark frame glasses. In fact I think Beck will laugh harder at this than Stewarts audience. Oh well.

Weight of Glory on November 6, 2009 at 7:18 PM
