The woman who stopped a mass murderer

posted at 12:55 pm on November 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

All of us have spent a lot of time looking into the actions, motivations, and background of the man who murdered 13 people at Fort Hood and wounded dozens of others.  The New York Daily News gives us a look at the civilian responder who stopped the carnage, taking a bullet herself in the process.  The quick and decisive actions of Police Sergeant Kimberly Munley saved lives and gives an object lesson in the value of aggressive action against rampagers:

The hero cop who ended the bloody rampage at Fort Hood had been directing traffic moments before she confronted the gunman and pumped four bullets into him despite being shot herself.

Civilian police Sgt. Kimberly Munley and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire Thursday afternoon, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said Friday.

Munley, who had been trained in active-response tactics, rushed into the building and confronted the shooter as he was turning a corner, Cone said. …

Cone said Munley’s aggressive response training taught her that “if you act aggressively to take out a shooter you will have less fatalities.”

That is a good lesson to remember.  The attacker in this case gave little consideration to his personal security, by all accounts, and was not going to stop until someone stopped him.  Munley understood this and went against every human survival instinct to pursue a confrontation with a murderous lunatic — and nearly got killed for her efforts.  Her heroism saved lives at Fort Hood.

Munley will survive her wounds.   Like the shooter, the hospital has stabilized her condition, and she spent last evening checking to see what the extent of the rampage was.  Munley deserves the deep appreciation of the nation for her gallantry in action. (via Atlas Shrugs)

Nov. 6, 2009 – Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has directed a moment of silence throughout the Defense Department today to honor the victims of yesterday’s attack at Fort Hood, Texas.

Twelve people were killed and 30 others were wounded when Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hassan allegedly opened fire in the post’s Soldier Family Readiness Center. One of the wounded victims died overnight, bringing the death toll to 13. Malik was wounded and is in custody, Army officials said.

The attack occurred at 1:34 p.m. CST yesterday, and Defense Department personnel around the world will pause and mark the moment of silence at that same time today, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said. For example, those in the U.S. Eastern time zone will observe the moment of silence at 2:34 p.m. local time, while those on the West Coast will observe it at 11:34 a.m.

highhopes on November 6, 2009 at 2:07 PM

It is ironic that on a military base that the traffic cop is armed but all the trained soldiers are not. If the military would have trusted their own soldiers with being armed then maybe a soldier that was at the site could have stopped this murderer before Sgt Munley who had to run from traffic duties to the scene. This is not to denigrate the heroism of Sgt Munley.

Soldiers are also trained in active shooter to run to confront.

Thank God that Sgt Munley was trained in active shooter so that a fiasco like Columbine where the police waited for enough backup and students died waiting.

Law-enforcement officers (LEOs) as a matter of fact almost all use some sort of fragmentation or hollow-point rounds in their service weapons to minimize collateral damage. This way the bullet hits the bad guy and stops without possibly passing through him and hitting civilians.

Not FMJ rounds. Conversely the only rounds allowed by the Geneva Convention are full metal jacket (FMJ) rounds which are used by our military.

As for what sort of load Sgt Munley was shooting at the deranged piece of crap, I don’t know for sure but would bet heavily on 9mm hollow-point or fragmenting/frangible rounds.

TrickyDick on November 6, 2009 at 2:08 PM

Two observations:

1. She shot this jihadi 4 times? And he is still alive. This is the reason 9mm euro-weenie caliber ammo is pathetic. Americans have ALWAYS used larger caliber ammo.

2. If this jihadi continued to shoot after being shot 4 times, this should be cause for concern for our military philosophy of small but many rounds, as opposed to large but fewer rounds. I’ll take the .45 round any day.

A while back, someone was telling me about a study that looked into what weapon police should use, where the conclusion was that the penetrating power of the gun was irrelevant with respect to collateral damage because so few of fired shots actually hit the target in the first place.

Oh, so military bases are now gun-free zones? Terrific.

I must say, in Israel, every base has soldiers walking around with their M-16 weapon unless their work prohibits it. Even leaving the base or taking a bus, soldiers have their rifles. Amazing here in America people are sooo unprepared.

Speaking of women and courage, there was a fun reality show that did an experiment. They staged a woman being aggressively harassed by a man, and an older person being harassed by his “caretaker.”

It was the women who actually interfered to stop the behavior. Men repeatedly walked past and ignored the abuse.

That was sort of creepy to watch.

baldilocks on November 6, 2009 at 1:07 PM

True, that & now the world has proof of it. It takes ZERO bravery for a zealot to attack an unarmed crowd with a concealed portable arsenal. It takes mucho courage for a woman to fight the powerful human intinct for survival, walk right up into the fusillade & take the murderous bastard out.

As a Texas woman, I am so very proud of that girl!

Speaking of, Baldilocks, I read earlier your statement on another thread that you were relieved to learn Hasan wasn’t black. I’m white, but I felt the same sense of relief when his picture first came up on the screen too, because it meant that this horrific atrocity couldn’t be sent down the dead-end rabbit hole of race. Could there be anything more irrelevant as the amount of melanin some lunatic is packing when he commits mass murder screeaming Allahu Akbar?

So rather than this episode of raw evil become sidetracked, bogged down & ultimately minimalized by yet another fruitless discussion based upon the false predicate of race, the over-arching question in everyone’s mind now demanding an answer remains undiverted: why does the clearly psychosis-inducing Koran seem to compel those of all races who succumb to its authority most devoutly to commit such savage murder in its name, & so often?

She did her job exceptionally. She was trained for it. She took a bullet. She stopped the rampage. Just like any other police officer would have. She was at the right place at the right time.

She is a hero. No more or less than our soldiers and other cops.

They’re all heros.

Hurray for them all.

Stop this bickering.

I think we have a rare opportunity to side with our lib commenters here. Take advantage of it and relish it.

But I’ll say this to them, DONT FORGET IT and DONT GO BACK TO A 11/4 MENTALITY.

shick on November 6, 2009 at 2:15 PM

I hope this woman gets the highest honor possible.

But next time, let’s all hope that our soldiers who are entrusted with M-16s abroad could be empowered to defend themselves on American soil. (Because banning the carrying of firearms by soldiers was really effective in preventing this murderous rampage, wasn’t it?)

Damn you are stupid woman. The “Wild West” as you call it, was not as depicted on TV. The majority of towns in the old west did not allow one to openly carry a gun. Sheriff’s usually collected the guns and returned them when a person left.

Also, criminals are a LOT less likely to use violence knowing that some people are packing heat. That’s why an armed society is a polite society. Example: Virginia Tech.

Try and get unstuck from stupid some day.

Andy the reason he is still alive probably has more to with the type of round used (as I posted above most probably frangible/fragmenting instead of full metal jacket that would go further into the body & more likely to kill) and the fact that well his sorry can was next door to a very very good military hospital that provided instant treatment to him & his victims.

Not the kind of round used.

FYI: The reason that 9mm/5.56mm are preferred over .45cal/7.62mm is that they are lighter, shoot farther, and more accurately than the older ammo as well as having a lot less recoil. In case you’re wondering about how I know I have fired the following Walther P6 (9mm standard sidearm of the GSG), M-16 (5.56mm standard battle rifle along with the M-4 of the U.S. military), Colt 45 (yes that legedary one) and an old M-1 Garand (7.62mm standard infantry rife in WWII). The hole you make in the other guy may be bigger with the last two, but it is rather useless if you can’t get your fire on the target as quickly.

Stop being a drama queen. This “rule” has been in place for years.. decades.

I and my husband at the time were not allowed to keep anything without the post marshall knowing what it was. He at the time had an AR-15,.44 and a few others I can’t remember and i I had was a little .22 pistol.

It is the law on post/base living at the barracks or in housing.

Count to 10 on November 6, 2009 at 2:08 PM

No. Our weapons are maintained in unit armories under double metal doors. One of which is like a jail-cell door with bars and the other is very much like your bank safe door. And it’s all wired to a post security system called SIDs. Not saying it’s impossible to happen, but very unlikely.

I know of one instance where soldiers in a training area close to Spring Lake (near Ft. Bragg) with their weapons met up with gang bangers. They took one soldiers weapon because they knew it wasn’t loaded and the other kid ran like hell and kept his.

Pamela, watch this video here:
What probably should concern us all a lot more than the actual event, is that an eye witness to this was afraid of losing her job with the military for actually reporting it. How please, did we get to the point where telling the truth meant losing your job? How did Islam become so protected, that reporting the words of the killer as he did his best to slaughter all his coworkers is a crime and a firing offense?

The reason that 9mm/5.56mm are preferred over .45cal/7.62mm is that they are lighter, shoot

The .45 is actually 11.43mm not 7.62.

I understand obtaining and keeping fire on the target. That problem is not applicable in CQCB. A shotgun would work as well, but no one is gonna carry one of those around all day. Training training training with a .45 will be just as affective. BTW, women have a harder time with larger caliber handguns than do men. Muscle mass plays an important role. Perhaps that is why she was carrying a 9mm handgun. But of course 90% of the police in this country do to. Except Harry Callahan.

While I’m neither going to confirm or deny the accuracy (or lack therof) of some of my co-workers I’m simply quoting the “LEO Bible” as it were as to why we use x type of round and the Army/Marines use y type of round.

Personally all I care about is that my rounds
a.) hit the bastard and
b.) kill or stop the bastard without
c.) potentially endangering civilians.

Powers higher than me decided that 9mm frangible/fragmenting/hollow-point ammo was what met all of these requirements the best. End of story. As to the accuracy or efficacy of the chosen rounds it would be better to take it up with your local Law Enforcement Agency if you feel that a change is warranted (no pun intended).

I didn’t mean anything about the ammo affecting accuracy — the recommendation of the study was that police should carry weapons that look and sound like they should knock you over, because that seemed to have more effect on stopping the criminal than any of the ballistic parameters.

I eat sleep and drink with my pistol here. When I go flying, I additionally have my M4. Don’t get me wrong, I love my weapons when I’m here. (Especially “Slappy” my M4)But I’ll be damned if I have to haul them around with me 24/7 when I return from redeployment. It’s not like wearing your ID tags. You could misplace those and the Army will stamp you a new set. If you lose that weapon while you’re taking a crap or in the PX or the Post Bank. Come on, think about it. It’s against military regulars to even transport them in your POV.

This would solve nothing anyway.

As for the 9mm. I don’t disagree. I own in civilian models what I tote for Uncle Sam. I have Bushmaster and Superior Arms AR15 and a Beretta 9mm. I reload the 9mm with wad-cutters though. It’s a bit better than the NATO FMJ and I still can squeeze till my fingers gets tired before I have to reload.

hawkdriver on November 6, 2009 at 2:32 PM

Andy in Agoura Hills on November 6, 2009 at 2:28 PM

In my listing of ammo this is what I meant

9mnm( standard pistol ammo today)/5.56(standard battle ammo today)

.45cal (standard pistol ammo until 1984)/7.62 (standard battle ammo until the mid to late 1960′s)

I DID NOT intend to imply that those calibers were equivalent, as anyone who has served or knows much about guns and ammo is well aware. Sorry if you misunderstood my post Andy.

He was a kid in a training area. The thief was trespassing on government property. At the time, no one would have thought anyone would pull something like than.

Yep, I noticed that too. I guess a simple “Thank You” is just too much to ask.

Aw, you guys are just being fritzy. I think she did a great job, and thank goodness. It could have been so much worse.

Spartacus on November 6, 2009 at 1:57 PM

Inappropriate discussion for this thread. Go away.

BadgerHawk on November 6, 2009 at 1:59 PM

I’ll loudly second that. After I saw that I kicked myself for apologizing to him for mixing up the medals.

I wonder how many more the shooter would have killed if Spartacus had been there and insisted on waiting for a 6 foot white guy to show up. *sshat.

ProfessorMiao on November 6, 2009 at 2:46 PM

Read his post again. He was praising her for leaving a duty of directing traffic to a life or death situations. He never called her a “Traffic Cop”. You said it. He was defending her over the comment Spartacus made.

hawkdriver on November 6, 2009 at 2:01 PM

I didn’t read the Spartacus post, so if I took it in the wrong context, I apologize. I tend to be very protective of Soldiers and Cops.

ProfessorMiao on November 6, 2009 at 2:46 PM

Don’t wonder that. Then he wins.

Be happy a regular woman came to the scene and helped make a horrible situation better, because she wanted to do good and became a cop.

military regulars

Er, it’s the fever. Military “regulations”. Military regulars are the guys the Dean hangs around with.

That’s a TEXAS Girl slingin’ it.

She’ll never buy a beer again in her life. She’s sentenced the MUSLIM FUNDAMENTALIST JACKASS to life in a wheelchair with square wheels and a hamsandwich for a seat.

Good on her. I hope she’s up and around soon.

Dang ted that was a good one.

“A hamsandwich for a seat”! Bwaaaahhhh

Nothing to say sorry about. I have nothing but admiration for our LEOs. Especially in these days and times when your responsibilities and ours have so blurred together on the home front. I hope you’re enjoying your retirement. :-)

Everyone’s a military expert now, eh hawkdriver?

baldilocks on November 6, 2009 at 2:58 PM

Hawk, it’s good to see you on this thread!

Mary in LA on November 6, 2009 at 3:01 PM

Ah, that explains it!

Sgt, Munley is a native of Carolina Beach.

Another fine example why North Carolinians possess the nickname “Tar Heel.”

PJ Emeritus on November 6, 2009 at 3:05 PM

Sgt. Munley,
Nice shootin’. Remember, you’re allowed to duck if you want to.

Blacksmith8 on November 6, 2009 at 3:05 PM

I have to go, but I will tell you one story. And really it’s for you Ann. And it hits to the heart of why I hate PCness so God Damned much.

It’s about the young Captain I’ve flown with here who literally has memorized all the frequencies in our AO, RC South. She does everything else equally well and she has a fierce warriors heart. But no other man or woman that I know of can remember all those frequencies and I’ve kidded her that she must be a witch to be able to do that. She thought the assumption was hilarious but knowing you and how we have to walk on egg shells for what we say around you, I skipped that from the comment about her. No one in this Army appreciates our brave female warriors more than me, but you can take all the PC crap and title sensitivity and file it. Conservatives are just a little more sophisticated than you think.

Night all.

Hey Baldi! I guess so. They’re at least military “regulars”

hawkdriver on November 6, 2009 at 3:09 PM

God Bless Sergeant Munley! Not in the least an accidental hero. She ran to the fight and put herself between the monster and his would-be next victim(s), and she took him out.
Hey Kenneth! This is courage!!

Speaking of which, the woman police chief just announced that the Orlando shooter has been captured.

:)

Good job, chief.

Don’t you just love the smell of irony? How perfect is it that an ‘infidel’ WOMAN would damn-near kill this Islamic loon who refused to ever have his picture taken with women BECAUSE of his faith. Gotta love it!

MsUnderestimated on November 6, 2009 at 3:35 PM

Thank you Sgt. Munley.

Make a speedy recovery.

wyntre on November 6, 2009 at 3:36 PM

God Bless you, Sgt Munley and I pray for your complete recovery. You are a model of heroism to little girls (and boys) everywhere.

BTW, can’t do that wearing a burqa, can you?

I would bet she does. The photo in the article is of her at the Fort Hood ‘Freedom Fest’ with Dierks Bentley.

She and her husband look like something out of
“Raising Arizona” but all kidding aside, she is a hero.

RobCon on November 6, 2009 at 1:26 PM

See above. Not her hubby; country artist Dierks Bentley.

MsUnderestimated on November 6, 2009 at 3:46 PM

God Bless you, Sgt. and get well soon, America needs you!

BlueStateBilly on November 6, 2009 at 3:56 PM

Sorry for it being off topic, but this whole thread makes me think that a ticket with Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann would be freakin unbeatable.

Kristamatic on November 6, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Would the shooter have still been alive if it were .45 Colt hollow point rounds instead of 9mm?

Not if she hit him anywhere near vital organs.

mr.blacksheep on November 6, 2009 at 4:05 PM

Hasan paralyzed.

It is against my religion to laugh at the misfortune of enemies so I won’t laugh. Much.

Sorry…gallows humor.

The comments on most military personnel being unarmed on post are quite correct. You are much more likely to run into someone “packing heat” in any Texas city.
***
When I was in Army basic training in 1964 the only time we got live ammo was on the rifle range–M14 rifle with 7.62 (.308) ammo.
***
When I went on guard duty around the fog shrouded Fort Ord, Ca. ammo dump us 2 trainees carried empty rifles–everyone knew also. A few guys had been assaulted weeks earlier in the early AM and their rifles taken away from them. A group of civilians jumped them in the foggy night and beat them up first. The other guard was a mile away on the other side of the dump–no radio either. They knew where to steal their rifles.

The lady is clearly a hero, very unlike many others.

But Hasan isn’t the sole guilty party. The US Army’s unforgivable political correctness is also to blame for the casualties at Ft. Hood.

Given the myriad warning signs, it’s appalling that no action was taken against a man apparently known to praise suicide bombers and openly damn US policy. But no officer in his chain of command, either at Walter Reed Army Medical Center or at Ft. Hood, had the guts to take meaningful action against a dysfunctional soldier and an incompetent doctor.

Had Hasan been a Lutheran or a Methodist, he would’ve been gone with the simoon. But officers fear charges of discrimination when faced with misconduct among protected minorities.

Now 12 soldiers and a security guard lie dead. 31 soldiers were wounded, 28 of them seriously. If heads don’t roll in this maggot’s chain of command, the Army will have shamed itself beyond moral redemption.

There’s another important issue, too. How could the Army allow an obviously incompetent and dysfunctional psychiatrist to treat our troubled soldiers returning from war? An Islamist whacko is counseled for arguing with veterans who’ve been assigned to his care? And he’s not removed from duty? What planet does the Army live on?

For the first time since I joined the Army in 1976, I’m ashamed of its dereliction of duty. The chain of command protected a budding terrorist who was waving one red flag after another. Because it was safer for careers than doing something about him.

You’re a super-stud walking around Agour Hills with your matching shoulder-carry .45s. Watch out for squirrels Sgt. Slaughter.
