Oh my: Public now opposes ObamaCare, 45/53

posted at 4:43 pm on November 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

A tip o’ the hat to CNN for gamely trying to spin one of the most gruesome polls for ObamaCare that we’ve seen this year — so far. Opposition to The One’s plan is now a clear majority, up seven points since September; the number of Americans who want Congress to either make major changes to the bill, start over on the bill, or scrap the entire effort stands at a combined 72 percent; and the number who say Obama isn’t doing enough to work with Republicans now equals the number who say he is.

CNN’s headline? “Public wants Congress to keep working on health care.”

Fifty-nine percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey say lawmakers should continue working on the legislation, a rise of 6 points since August. But only a quarter say those bills should be passed pretty much as is, with a third suggesting that Congress should make major changes. The poll also indicates that one in four say lawmakers should start from scratch and 15 percent want Congress to stop all work on health care reform…

Six in ten independents say they oppose Obama’s health care proposals,” says Holland. “That’s a nine point increase since October.”

Check out these trend lines. If Blue Dogs were breathing into paper bags on Tuesday night, they’ll need oxygen tanks tomorrow:

o-cnn2

o-cnn

Opposition’s actually higher now than it was at the height of townhall mania in August. As for that 72 percent who want — at the very least — major changes made to the bill, what’s interesting about it is the lack of a trend. Compare the numbers now to the same numbers in August and you’ll find that a combined 73 percent were disgusted with the bill then, too. Which means, after two months of hard work and compromise in Congress to hammer out bills in the House and Senate, the number who think only minor changes are now needed has increased by … one percent.

Meanwhile, contain your surprise to find that newly elected Rep. Bill Owens from NY-23 has suddenly decided that he was wrong about the public option during the campaign and that it’s a great idea after all. Exit question: The left keeps assuring us that the big problem with ObamaCare is the lack of a “robust” public option, but how does that square with the CNN poll? Granted, even here, 55 percent say they support it, but we’re a lot closer to having a public option in the final bill now than we were in August — and yet the overall numbers for ObamaCare are that much further into the toilet. What gives?

Kind of like a trial period or 30-day return policy.

Of course if that was the case, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank, Barack Obama, and every other democrat would be experiencing funemployment too.

Mark Boabaca on November 6, 2009 at 4:52 PM

The people opposed to socialized medicine did not and will not vote for Obama. Therefore he does not care what that they think. Obama Care is just another typical vote buying program for the Dems. Ram this through and then go onto amnesty. I’m pretty sure that was the game plan for Labor in England. It’s bankrupted england but kept Labor’s control on parliament permanent.

Hey, when you post a poll, why not arrange the numbers in a way that makes sense, like:

Public now opposes ObamaCare, 53/45

How hard was that?

ProfessorMiao on November 6, 2009 at 4:49 PM

I can see the Hoffman commercial next year: “Owens changed his vote — wouldn’t you like to change yours?”

Back to Obama, IMHO this isn’t Waterloo, but rather the retreat from Moscow. Thatis what destroyed Napoleon’s dream. The later battles, though necessary and bloody, were a formality.

Granted, even here, 55 percent say they support it, but we’re a lot closer to having a public option in the final bill now than we were in August — and yet the overall numbers for ObamaCare are that much further into the toilet. What gives?

It’s simple: Because to the average minimally well-informed person “more options” sounds better than “fewer options.” What’s the harm of another “option”? The specific numbers, as has been demonstrated numerous times, are easy to shift around, sometimes dramatically, depending on how the question is asked.

I’ve been dead set against all versions of Obamacare forever, but, if you asked me if I could have a public option – without cost, without effect on anything else – I’d say, sure, why not? Why not give me another private option, a public-private option, a mystery option, a purple option, and an outer space alternative universe option, too?

we’re a lot closer to having a public option in the final bill now than we were in August — and yet the overall numbers for ObamaCare are that much further into the toilet. What gives?

It seems to me there are three possibilities:

1: They know they’re about to get thrown out on their keisters, so they’re going for fulfillment of the grand liberal wet dream while they still can. To hell with the public.

2. They underestimate the public’s fury, presuming the anger will subside before next November.

3. They properly estimate the public’s fury, but are willing to sacrfice power to do what they really believe is best for the country. (This is highly unlikely as it assumes a measure of goodwill and patriotism–however misguided–unknown among modern liberals.

4. Just for tinhat wearing fun — they believe elections will be suspended next fall due to a national emergency, so they can now do whatever they want.

Compromise? Please explain a little further where this word has been used in Congress? Oh, when Oly Snow got her butt kissed enough to pass a committee vote? Yeah, now that’s compromise.

(and it must be considered hard work when our congressfolks instruct their staff in include the word “shall” a thousand times in the bill)

Rovin on November 6, 2009 at 5:10 PM

For all those crying here, Obama administration has earned the right to push through this legislation by winning the last elections. Along with the Senate and the Congress. Sorry. That’s how democracies work: elections have consequences most of which are irreversible. (Sample Medicare/Medicaid)

So the real answer is to defeat these guys next year and make them unemployed. And for that, the nonsense about Third Party, both parties are equally corrupt, I would rather lose than sacrifice ideological purity must stop.

Because buddies, if Dems manage to scrape through next time, we are in for a major hit. The fear–whatever it exists now–will be gone.

The problem for the socialists though is when the country runs out of money, the producers quit producing (because it’s unprofitable to labor mostly for the benefit of others) and the programs can no longer go on because of it.

This is why EVERY socialist country has always ended in economic collapse. Europe has managed to avoid it for 40 years because the American economy has been strong enough to sustain ourselves, AND pay for most of their defense (European countries spend FAR less of their GDP on defense than we do).
