Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on November 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
You can call this Barack Obama’s “My Pet Goat” moment:
THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody have a seat. Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the Interior staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference. I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor* winner. It’s good to see you. (Applause.)
My understanding is, is that you had an extremely productive conference. I want to thank all of you for coming and for your efforts, and I want to give you my solemn guarantee that this is not the end of a process but a beginning of a process, and that we are going to follow up. (Applause.) We are going to follow up. Every single member of my team understands that this is a top priority for us. I want you to know that, as I said this morning, this is not something that we just give lip service to. And we are going to keep on working with you to make sure that the first Americans get the best possible chances in life in a way that’s consistent with your extraordinary traditions and culture and values.
Now, I have to say, though, that beyond that, I plan to make some broader remarks about the challenges that lay ahead for Native Americans, as well as collaboration with our administration, but as some of you might have heard, there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.
It took Obama almost two full minutes from the time he began speaking until he got around to mentioning the shooting at Fort Hood — the reason everyone tuned into Obama’s speech. The nation wanted some leadership at a time when it appeared that a terrorist attack may have taken place on American soil — and Obama was apparently more concerned about giving a “shout out” to his friends at the Tribal Nations Conference. Indeed, he tells the audience above that he’s been inconvenienced out of delivering his lengthier remarks because the shooting has intruded itself on his daily business.
Well, being Commander in Chief is his daily business, not pandering to the Tribal Nations Conference — and he should have started out this little missive with his priorities in order.
Update: Presidential disconnect:
Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That’s the least that should occur.
Indeed, an argument could be made that Obama should have canceled the Indian event, out of respect for people having been murdered at an Army post a few hours before. That would have prevented any sort of jarring emotional switch at the event.
Did the president’s team not realize what sort of image they were presenting to the country at this moment? The disconnect between what Americans at home knew had been going on — and the initial words coming out of their president’s mouth was jolting, if not disturbing. …
All the president’s men (and women) fell down on the job Thursday. And Democrats across the country have real reason to panic.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I didn’t expect anything different from Obie. I mean with all the beating up of America speeches and going to church of Rev. Wright I don’t know how anyone could have expected more out of Der Leader.

Amateurish?
No, bloody insensitive.
If it is not about the “O” it does not exist or have weight in Obama’s small mind. Period.

He had to talk without his precious TOTUS, and about something that required dignity, compassion, and forthrightness.
In other words, he was completely out of his depth.

Duffus, absolutely clueless and insensitive. I think in his world dead or dying soldiers are simply a bother.
I cannot believe a president could be so obtuse or absent of consideration.
“Shout out”?? Unreal.

Another inspiring moment delivered by our worthless POS commander in chief. His attempts at hiding his disdain for our military are laughable at best
flyoverboy on November 6, 2009 at 9:08 AM
I don’t think he really cares….. that explains the response perfectly. No doubt he had some stooge craft some words for him to read from TOTUS. If he really cared, he would have turned off TOTUS and spoken from the heart. Forget that! Elections have consequences.

darktood on November 6, 2009 at 9:13 AM
Same here. I was severely disoriented for a few minutes, even after he was finished speaking. I don’t expect anyone to behave this strangely or stupidly, especially POTUS. It was surreal. Isn’t he supposed to surround himself with advisors and handlers that help him out with this stuff? The entire viewing audience of the nation (and some beyond) is sitting in stunned horror, and he couldn’t have been more shocking if he came out wearing a Bozo wig.
shibumiglass on November 6, 2009 at 9:14 AM
That I did not know. But given that I would think that until all the facts were known “Service men and women” would still be appropriate in this case – at the time the statement was made there was still the possibility of a visiting member of another branch of the military being among the dead or wounded.
And honestly, isn’t it too easy to picture Giggles using “soldiers” to talk about Marines?
Fo’ shizzle.

You say that as if the libs are correct in saying Bush was bad for continuing to read to the children for a few more minutes after he was told about the attacks. If that’s not how you feel, I’d suggets changing it. Otherwise, it makes it seem as though you agree with the libs.
You know, kind of like how AP calls “progressives” progressives without using quotes. Makes it look like he feels they are justified in calling themselves progressives.

I said the same thing this morning, I can’t believe I would give Bill Clinton a “shout out” but at least he would have felt and conveyed the pain of the nation. BC was a scoundrel and a letch but empathy was his strong suit. He conveyed a love of America at least on par with his love of self.
Obama only loves himself.

The Pet Goat reading was filling time while USSS checked out the school and routes to the airport to make sure it was safe to leave, and to decide which airplane to put POTUS on. They decided against putting him on the doomsday plane because it would unnecessarily frighten the public.
This is far different than a CiC who had plenty of time to prepare goofing around on camera.

Ed, I’ve been a fan (albeit a quiet one) of yours for years, but this comparison really disappointed me. The entire “My Pet Goat Moment” attack on Pres. Bush was baseless. That you’d compare what was happening in those few minutes on 9/11 to the current president’s informed yet nonchalant approach to this tragedy is, at best, regretable.
Least of These on November 6, 2009 at 10:23 AM
Unfortunately, the full vid is not getting airplay. Even Fox was cutting out the first part.
I was particularly struck by the smirk on his face during the first part as well as by the audience’s uncomfortable reaction to his light-hearted joshing.
It’s truly a disgusting act and reveals what most of us already know about Obama – that he’s a narcissistic man-child, unfit to lead. The thought that this man is Commander-in-Chief is repulsive.
Y-not on November 6, 2009 at 10:24 AM
Calling this Obama’s “My Pet Goat” moment is asinine. Even though Bush was criticized for continuing to read the children’s book after learning of the attack, he did everything right. Let me explain.
The Secret Service was immediately put in charge when it was learn the nation was under attack. Their orders would override the President’s orders in such a time of emergency (the movie “Air Force One”, after all, is just a movie…not reality).
They would have taken him away from the scheduled event as soon as possible, and they would have had to methods of doing so.
First, they could have called in the National Emergency Airborne Command Post, NEACP (pronounced “Kneecap”), which can stay in air indefinitely. This would have taken several minutes to fly to the site where the President was.
Second, their other option was to whisk the President away to Air Force One. However, this also would have taken a bit of time, as they would have had to contact police and get traffic blocked off earlier than scheduled.
No matter what choice, the President couldn’t go anywhere for several minutes. The Secret Service would have kept him in the very same room, scouted in advance for protection, where the President was surrounded by concrete walls and armed men. Taking him “out in the open” would have been foolish.
Again, the Secret Service was in charge. In all likelyhood, they had the President informed the nation was under attack, and that he needed to stay right where he was until NEACP could arrive or traffic could be cleared for the Presidential motorcade. Bush obeyed their orders, and remained calm.
He…did…nothing…wrong…or…un-Presidential. I’m sick of pointing this out.

publiuspen on November 6, 2009 at 10:25 AM
Like I said before, Rev Wright “preached” that Native Americans were victims of the evil white man just like blacks are, and he compared U. S. Marines to Jesus’ killers.
Something tells me that Obama was in the pews during such “sermons”, as evidenced by his priorities. Obama was conditioned to behave in this manner during his twenty plus year tutelage under Rev Wright, which at the time was half of Obama’s life and the majority of his adulthood.
And the Liberal Media said Obama’s close relationship to Rev Wright was unimportant.
OxyCon on November 6, 2009 at 10:26 AM
Can we question his dedication to the role of CIC now?
jukin on November 6, 2009 at 10:28 AM
Can you imagine any former President taking a stage after an unprecedented event on American soil, giving “shout-outs” to the audience, and then after 2 minutes later reference his condolences to those that were killed and wounded?
He said that he was waiting to get more details of what happened. Are you kidding me? As the CiC, he should have delayed his scheduled speech in order to work the phones with the Army commanders to get every detail of what was happening at Ft. Hood.
If there was ever a time when Obama put his weak and contemptible leadership on display, this was it yesterday.
smartsy on November 6, 2009 at 10:29 AM
When answering a question about Afghanistan from Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, Rush Limbaugh said something along the lines of Obama doesn’t care about the troops. I think a better phrasing might have been, Obama doesn’t feel a fundamental connection with American armed forces personnel, perhaps because liberals are very wary of nationalism.
I think this “my pet goat” moment really drives that point home. Obama thinks of being commander-in-chief as just one on a long list of bullet points in his job description. He didn’t run for president to become commander-in-chief, he ran to pass universal health care. Being commander-in-chief is probably something he’d rather delegate to someone else.

Obama is a sad commander indeed… My guess is that he had a card to remind him to mention Fort Hood. If you listen to the first applause, it seems restrained… Most of those there knew of the attack I’m sure, and they probable felt uncomfortable clapping for Zero with that hanging in the air, but he is such a good god that his zombie followers got the worship started when he cued them.
-
The second clap and cheer even had a whistle… That is what Obaby needed before he could get to the real prezidential part of what he had to say… Had he started on the somber note, he may not have got fed… Simple immaturity and ego at work.
-
One last thought, when I left work yesterday I had an 1 ½ hour drive to my daughters, going from Pa to the Jersey shore. When I crossed into Jersey I noticed police cars sitting in very random places, many on the shoulder of the road, as if waiting for something. Then I heard the news and it kinda made sense.
-
It was either a response to what happened at Fort Hood, or Cortez was going to have them arrest suspected Christie voters…

B. Hussein Obama once again proves that his priority is the destruction of America. He merely pays lip service to the military for political purposes while he once again apologizes to yet another group of victims of American aggression. The real question is whether he will even allow this terrorist to be prosecuted.

KittyLowrey on November 6, 2009 at 10:52 AM
I always think of this exerpt from an article written by a lib back during the campaign, its spot on:
Combine a child’s response to serial abandonment with the perspective of an outsider, and Obama became an alien species against which American politics had no natural defenses. He is a Third World anthropologist profiling Americans, in but not of the American system. No country’s politics depends more openly on friendships than America’s, yet Obama has not a single real friend, for he rose so fast that all his acquaintances become rungs on the ladder of his ascent. One human relationship crowds the others out of his life, his marriage to Michelle, a strong, assertive and very angry woman.
It is conceivable that Barack Obama, if elected, will destroy himself before he destroys the country. Hatred is a toxic diet even for someone with as strong a stomach as Obama … Both Obama and the American public should be very careful of what they wish for. As the horrible example of Obama’s father shows, there is nothing worse for an embittered outsider manipulating the system from within than to achieve his goals.
beachgirlusa on November 6, 2009 at 10:55 AM
Completely apart from his appalling lack of sense of the time and the event regarding the massacre at Fort Hood, what is with this guy and his insatiable predilection for attending conferences, staging “working sessions” on education and health care, and generally engaging in meetings with pointless goals that produce no worthwhile outcomes?
