Obamateurism of the Day

You can call this Barack Obama’s “My Pet Goat” moment:
THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody have a seat. Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the Interior staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference. I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor* winner. It’s good to see you. (Applause.)
My understanding is, is that you had an extremely productive conference. I want to thank all of you for coming and for your efforts, and I want to give you my solemn guarantee that this is not the end of a process but a beginning of a process, and that we are going to follow up. (Applause.) We are going to follow up. Every single member of my team understands that this is a top priority for us. I want you to know that, as I said this morning, this is not something that we just give lip service to. And we are going to keep on working with you to make sure that the first Americans get the best possible chances in life in a way that’s consistent with your extraordinary traditions and culture and values.
Now, I have to say, though, that beyond that, I plan to make some broader remarks about the challenges that lay ahead for Native Americans, as well as collaboration with our administration, but as some of you might have heard, there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.
It took Obama almost two full minutes from the time he began speaking until he got around to mentioning the shooting at Fort Hood — the reason everyone tuned into Obama’s speech. The nation wanted some leadership at a time when it appeared that a terrorist attack may have taken place on American soil — and Obama was apparently more concerned about giving a “shout out” to his friends at the Tribal Nations Conference. Indeed, he tells the audience above that he’s been inconvenienced out of delivering his lengthier remarks because the shooting has intruded itself on his daily business.
Well, being Commander in Chief is his daily business, not pandering to the Tribal Nations Conference — and he should have started out this little missive with his priorities in order.
Update: Presidential disconnect:
Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That’s the least that should occur.
Indeed, an argument could be made that Obama should have canceled the Indian event, out of respect for people having been murdered at an Army post a few hours before. That would have prevented any sort of jarring emotional switch at the event.
Did the president’s team not realize what sort of image they were presenting to the country at this moment? The disconnect between what Americans at home knew had been going on — and the initial words coming out of their president’s mouth was jolting, if not disturbing. …
All the president’s men (and women) fell down on the job Thursday. And Democrats across the country have real reason to panic.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

This’ll be the Obamateurism of The Month, if not the whole year.
What a narcissistic twerp.
OhioCoastie on November 6, 2009 at 8:11 AM
Who is this Dr Joe Medicine Crow winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor? I don’t think you normally give a “shout-out” to a recipient of the highest honor this country can give, you usually salute them.
Mord on November 6, 2009 at 8:11 AM
Priorities indeed!
cmsinaz on November 6, 2009 at 8:14 AM
have to agree with you there…
cmsinaz on November 6, 2009 at 8:14 AM
Another Obamateurism- the guy he was giving the shout out to is not a Medal of Honor winner, he’s a recipient of the Medal of Freedom. Newsbusters covered this earlier today.
To further highlight Obama’s stumble, it was he himself who awarded the Medal of Freedom just a few months ago.
Jay Mac on November 6, 2009 at 8:14 AM
And as pointed out in the QOTD thread, Dr. Joe Crow is not a MoH recipient. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Bronze Star Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal and the Légion d’honneur. And you don’t “Win” the MoH.
jwehman on November 6, 2009 at 8:14 AM
Another round, eh?
It was truly quite a faux pas.

This was not an Obamateurism.
Obama. Doesn’t. Care. About. Our Military.
The nonchalance was intentional.

Yeah, what Jay Mac said!
jwehman on November 6, 2009 at 8:15 AM
Using a phrase like “shout out” in and of itself is demeaning to the Office of the President. Had this been Giggles’ only mistake here that would be bad enough. But taking almost two freakin’ minutes to “shout out” to his peeps before coming to “Oh, yeah, and there was a shooting, and I’m pissed that I have to address it instead of more speechifying about myself” is beyond the pale.
BTW, anyone notice that he used “soldiers” instead of the modern usage “service men and women”?
Giggles is an insult to the Office of the President.

From Wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Medicine_Crow
This is an even bigger cock-up than it seems. Joe Medicine Crow didn’t win the CMH, he recieved Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Bronze Star Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal and the Légion d’honneur. Obama goofed big time on that. There is a big difference between a CMH and the congressional gold medal. The gold medal is for civilians and the don’t even have to be citizens of the US.
Mord on November 6, 2009 at 8:17 AM
It gets worse: Joe Medicine Crow wasn’t given the CMH, he was awarded a Bronze Star and the Congressional Medal of Freedom which is a civilian award, and that was given in August by none other than Ogabe himself.
The President put the medal around Jim Crow’s neck, how dumb to you need to be to get that wrong?
Bishop on November 6, 2009 at 8:18 AM
Dependable as always, the news networks got right to work to cutting and editing that execrable piece of crap so Obama sounded more presidential. All in vain…Seriously, have we ever had a US President this blindly arrogant to all but himself? It’s nauseating to watch.
varnson on November 6, 2009 at 8:18 AM
I take it you’re being sarcastic.
Let me try to teach you how an actual human being might take this incident.
Imagine you go into your doctor’s office, and he spends the first 1:57 talking about how he and wifey had a good time in the Hamptons, played a little golf (still has that annoying slice!) and they bought a delightful little knick-knack from the most charming art boutique. All very delightful, you see.
Oh yes, he says, down to the important news: you have terminal brain cancer.
Your assignment today is to meditate on how someone with humanity and gravity is supposed to act.
jeff_from_mpls on November 6, 2009 at 8:19 AM
Ed…as a suggestion, this thread should have been titled “Middle Finger to America” rather than Obamateurism of the day. Come to think of it…it is becoming a daily habit.

Allah Pundit thinks you should just calm your little self down and stop overreacting, Ed. *rolls eyes*
But I’m with you. A pathetic display by a pathetic excuse for a man.

This fool is single-handedly turning the role of President of the United States into a joke. Let’s hope the next prez can resurrect the importance of this job and raise the expectations once again.

A shout out? This guy is beyond hope. I can’t even think of the correct response to this video. He just does not get it. The man never wanted to be Commander in Chief. He wants to be a community organizer. He needs to go away.

“And oh yeah, some soldiers were killed at Fort Hood today….ok back to me now.”
Bishop on November 6, 2009 at 8:22 AM
When you grow up and owe your success to identity politics and belong to a party that’s, um, not been known to have a really high regard for the concept of the U.S. military in the first place, your priorities are going to get a little skewered.
Obama was going to make sure he got in the shout out first, because he and his aides were probably afraid it would be completely forgotten or lost amid the ‘clutter’ if he actually made a statement about the Fort Hood deaths first. Of course, it’s still nowhere in the league of Keith Olbermann’s stunt last night — not talking about the Fort Hood massacre for the first 18 minutes of “Countdown” so he could rag on Michelle Bachmann’s Capitol Hill event — but you exepct Olby to be venally stupid 24/7/365. Obama should consider himself lucky he didn’t pull this at a prime-time event, when millions of more people would have been watching and wondering where his priorities are.
jon1979 on November 6, 2009 at 8:23 AM
ya got that right!
cmsinaz on November 6, 2009 at 8:24 AM
It’s so incredibly inappropriate and disconnected. His gut instincts are what’s horrifying and horrific.
CarolynM on November 6, 2009 at 8:24 AM
It was clear that the speech was pre-loaded into TOTUS so after thanking the organizers and giving a “Hey Ho” to a noted Native American” TOTUS stopped long enough that he could stumble through the comments he made. And he did stumble, not mention lie when he talked about keeping troops safe was his most important duty (How many of those troops have been killed by his dithering?).
I’m a little bit at a loss why he had to link the two events. He was informed of the situation while meeting with the President of Botswana and went through the whole Q&A photo-op without saying a word about what was happening in Fort Hood. Couldn’t he have released the statement he made through Robert Gibbs and called it a day? Why did he have to make the statement as an afterthought to a pre-canned speech that had nothing to do with the situation.
This is not Obama’s “My Pet Goat” moment- I personally think that happened when he took the brats out for ice cream the afternoon Iranians were being killed in droves.

Soldiers is appropriate when talking about only Army personnel. “Service men and women” is shorthand for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.
Beyond that it is reprehensible how much of an afterthought these comments were after being hyped as a “statement from the White House.” But hey, let’s give a shout out to incompetence.

So the smartest man ever to be elected President, the genius, a) doesn’t recognize that his expression of concern over a massacre on one of our domestic military bases is more important that a sophomoric “shout-out” at some toss-pot conference, and b) doesn’t even know what medal he awarded to the “shoutee” only a few weeks prior.
What say you, trolls? Do tell us how this reflects the brilliance of His Magnificence.

It went up 0.4% in one month? Damn! More people must’ve attempted to find employment.
Obama is definitely lucky in the sense that recent jobs reports have come out the same day as a big news story. Before it was the Olympic snub and now the Fort Hood shootings.
Of course with The One screwing up the Fort Hood situation with his “shout outs”, he doesn’t necessarily gain much from the media focusing its attention on that story.

Even if Obama doesn’t care, the Blue Dogs do. This has been a very bad week for the Dems. They got their asses handed to them Tuesday. Tens of thousands showed up at the capital yesterday despite having only a few days notice about the rally. The President botched the Fort Hood situation with “shout outs” instead of condolences. And unemployment just hit double digits.
