Graph of the Day

posted at 4:00 pm on November 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The GOP has this out as part of the “Holding Democrats Accountable” effort.  I’m with Glenn Reynolds on this one; the data speak for themselves without the editorial touch of “stimulus swindle” in the chart.  It’s a stylized version of the Innocent Bystanders chart, which uses Christina Romer’s original graph for her completely-repudiated forecasting of the American economy.  The only information missing from this chart is the $787 billion we spent to no effect whatsoever on job losses:

How much longer will Congress allow that red line to run before recalling what’s left of Porkulus?

Is it incompetence? Or does Obama want to turn the US into a dependent society? I am beginning to think it is the latter. The Democrats want people to be desperate, they want us to depend on the government for as much as possible…and they control the government.

Either that…or they are a bunch of idiots..neither of which inspires confidence.

BadgerHawk on November 6, 2009 at 4:08 PM

On the matter of incompetence, and worse, it is not just Obama.

But Hasan isn’t the sole guilty party. The US Army’s unforgivable political correctness is also to blame for the casualties at Ft. Hood.

Given the myriad warning signs, it’s appalling that no action was taken against a man apparently known to praise suicide bombers and openly damn US policy. But no officer in his chain of command, either at Walter Reed Army Medical Center or at Ft. Hood, had the guts to take meaningful action against a dysfunctional soldier and an incompetent doctor.

Had Hasan been a Lutheran or a Methodist, he would’ve been gone with the simoon. But officers fear charges of discrimination when faced with misconduct among protected minorities.

Now 12 soldiers and a security guard lie dead. 31 soldiers were wounded, 28 of them seriously. If heads don’t roll in this maggot’s chain of command, the Army will have shamed itself beyond moral redemption.

There’s another important issue, too. How could the Army allow an obviously incompetent and dysfunctional psychiatrist to treat our troubled soldiers returning from war? An Islamist whacko is counseled for arguing with veterans who’ve been assigned to his care? And he’s not removed from duty? What planet does the Army live on?

For the first time since I joined the Army in 1976, I’m ashamed of its dereliction of duty. The chain of command protected a budding terrorist who was waving one red flag after another. Because it was safer for careers than doing something about him.

The problem here is that the stimulus just wasn’t big enough

- Paul Krugman

BadgerHawk on November 6, 2009 at 4:15 PM

Massive government intervention in the 1930′s made a cyclical US recession into the longest deepest depression in our history. Now, the Administration and this Congress seems hell-bent on repeating this same feat.

Every time some Administration mouthpiece goes after evil corporations, or capitalists, more and more business owners tighten their belts, in fear that worse and more is to come. Unemployment continues and grows. Lack of capital investment wanes. The engine that has driven this Nation since our earliest days slows to a crawl.

And the response of the WH and Congress? Try to put the screws to those who have it in their collective power to work and purchase our way out of this depression.

Government spending won’t do it. Those who own businesses, those who actually hire other people to do jobs from the mundane to the spectacular are in fear that if they are seen as too successful, government will punish them.

At what point will common-sense economics be allowed to take over?

At no point under this Administration, this Congress, that’s for sure.

Can we get some real adults in charge, and soon?

Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.

Yes, yes. When Democrats shut Republicans out of conferring on bills that will drastically affect our economy and make threats and force a vote 48 hours after providing a bill over 1,000 pages long and say, “We won,” we MUST make sure we are so very, very, very, very, very nice when we point our our criticisms of them because, if all else fails, we always have our manners. We can really pat ourselves on the back for that after we go down to the courthouse to process our bankruptcies.

Okay, as a scientist with a heavy background in mathematics, I can’t let this one stand.

It’s way too easy to fool people by using statistics, and this graph does a good job of fooling people. If I were a layman, I would look at this graph and come away with the opinion that Obama’s policies have tripled the unemployment. However much I dislike Obama, that simply isn’t true.

It is much more truthful to use a realistic range for the y-axis — like, say, 2% to 12% — to show how Obama’s policies have failed. If anything, using a broader range is even more dramatic. See, for example, Innocent Bystanders’ famous graph.

Note that I blame Obama for high unemployment as much as anyone here, but I want to use a meaningful graph, not the phony graphs like the mainstream media uses.

We’re better than the mainstream media and we need to act better.
