Senior White House official gloats: “We’re 2-0 against Palin” now

posted at 7:18 pm on November 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

Since Axelrod’s been all over the place today, I’m going to assume he’s Tapper’s source here. In which case, how interesting that he chose to offer this particular bon mot anonymously.

To paraphrase Limbaugh, she’s living rent-free in their heads.

When Vice President Joe Biden went to upstate New York to campaign for Democrat Bill Owens on Monday, he took a risk.

Instead of campaigning in a low-key way, emphasizing local issues and Owens’ strengths, Biden picked up the gauntlet thrown down by national Republican figures such as Sarah Palin and Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and conservative pundits such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and agreed that the special House race was of national relevance…

“We’re 2-0 against Palin,” a senior administration official says. “The Vice President went in and took on Governor Palin and the other national Republicans who had gotten involved in the race and the White House is sure happy that Owens pulled out that win.”

“Biden campaigned on Palin/Beck/Rush because ‘Dem accomplishments’ didn’t fly,” counters S.E. Cupp, drily. Help me figure something out here: The Palin-centric read on NY-23 is all over the media today, no doubt to let the left make the case that she’s political poison. But if she’s the kiss of death, whose entry into a race can be counted on to send the silent majority fleeing into the arms of the Democrats, why’d Team Barry go to such lengths themselves to try to beat Hoffman? Obama attended a fundraiser for Owens; the vice president showed up for an eleventh-hour rally in the district; and they worked every connection they could to flip Scozzafava, leaving the nominees of both major parties aligned against the conservative. That’s a lot of effort to narrowly defeat someone who’d supposedly already received the coup de grace from Palin. But don’t look for logic on this subject: NBC’s own Palin-centric spin on the race mocks Sarahcuda and other top Republicans for backing a guy who was, it’s true, a terrible retail politician — even though they came thisclose to pushing him over the top.

Here’s Fred Thompson, another true conservative who invested a lot more than Palin did in the race, putting a happy face on the outcome.

I’m not a fan of the Huckster but I gotta give him props for something he said on his radio segment today (it’s on at 5:30am when the alarm goes off). He offered up the image that the Dems would view this election as evidence that the days of mismanagement are coming to an end and that they would spend the next year going out in a blaze of legislative socialist glory just like a Viking funeral pyre.

Mark my words, if healthcare reform fails, these evil creatures are going to be very dangerous wounded animals.

I’d say the bigger failure is the NY GOP for nominating Scuzzy in the first place. Like death panels, Palin was the one who put the national spotlight on the issue and essentially forced the fat liberal whore from the race. Hoffman wasn’t the ideal candidate but it was sure nice to go RINO hunting and send the fear of God in the left by voters revolting when the candidate is unacceptable. Is it too much to think that some Blue Dogs are vulnerable to the same sort of treatment as Scuzzy got?

highhopes on November 4, 2009 at 7:57 PM

I frankly worry about the lack of perspective. It speaks of a kind of thinking problem that is disturbing. Hoffman was actually sensible. He said, “Well, this is an unusual situation, since the GOP candidate was actually extremely liberal. I thought maybe people would be interested in having a conservative option.” I’m paraphrasing, but that was the essence. That’s the only story here.

When Pelosi and Axelrod extrapolate the win after seeing the drama unfold, complete with the Dede’s final betrayal to her supposed party, then it seems reasonable to doubt that these are people who should be trying to solve the country’s problems.

I thought Axelrod did not ever speak her name or that her name never came up in a conversation at the WH.

I thought Sarah Palin was irrelevant and damaged goods.

Isn’t Sarah Palin a private citizen? Isn’t this like Tiger Woods gloating over beating an amateur golfer?

Why no respect given to the GOP establishment? After all they are the “professional politicians”.

technopeasant on November 4, 2009 at 7:58 PM

BadgerHawk on November 4, 2009 at 7:59 PM

Yeah, let’s see….

Palin enters the 08 race and gives McCain numbers the boost that could have won the election, without the economic meltdown. And even then it was pretty close.

Ogabe spends two years on the campaign trail, never gets a tough question, which considering he admitted cocaine use in his book is remarkable.

SHE gets put through the media wringer and HE gets daily tongue baths by the media, and HE “won” the first round. Ok.

TugboatPhil on November 4, 2009 at 7:59 PM

To the left, Palin’s a non-entity, insignificant, a joke not to be taken seriously. If you’re draining your political capital to wage war against such a person, hasn’t she already beat you?

There is only one question I would like to ask here:

What is it about this soccer mom from Alaska that has these all-powerful officials in the White House so terrified at the mere mention of her name?

BadgerHawk on November 4, 2009 at 7:58 PM

CWforFreedom on November 4, 2009 at 7:59 PM

They fear Palin. That’s why they — the administration and its allies, such as NBC — take any and all chances to try to put her down, cast her as a loser, etc. They want to, need to, try to reinforce the concept she is, as you say, “political poison.” They want her out, much as they wanted Alice Palmer and Jack Ryan out.

Palin has two natural advantages over Obama:

1. More charisma. Part of this is just being a woman (women are more compelling than men, in general. Just take a look at the top-viewed YouTube videos if you have any doubts), but she is simply a better looking woman than he is a man. She doesn’t have the ears, isn’t a twig, etc. Barry’s a smile and not much else — she’s the whole thing.

2. Her potential “identity politics” base is larger than his. That is, there are more women (or non-black women, if you prefer) than there are African-American voters in America ([54% - AA women] vs 13% or so). If she is able to tap into that instinct, the female desire to put a woman into the Oval Office, she wins. This can’t be discounted, and it isn’t discounted by Team Obama.

Palin has issues. No doubt about it. But so do Romney and Huckabee, and others. Romney = rich white Mormon who launched RomneyCare. Huck = Gomer Pyle evangelical regional candidate who lacks enough charisma. Pawlenty? No. Well, maybe, but likely no.

The only person who might make a better candidate than Palin is Petraeus. But he doesn’t have the “historic” angle of being the first woman.

Palin has to do well in her rebirth. If she does, then the GOP better make its minds up soon so we don’t end up with some version of the Hoffman-Scozzafava fiasco and hurt feelings end up giving Barack a 2nd term.

Emphasis on overweight. We could get into a food fight about the different branches, e.g., the Marines don’t have this problem, but we won’t go there. ;-)

We live on a Navy base and I’m continually amazed at how, um, thin-challenged these sailors are. So many have grown up on junk food and lack of exercise; it’s a serious problem.

However, there are many that want to join the military because of the economic downturn. The military is being a bit more selective in who they let in.

However, blaming the kids for being fat and stupid is addressing the symptoms and not the cause. Whether they are able to join the military or not- they will still be fat and stupid. I’m not sure what the solution is (certainly not the nanny state approach of taxing sodas) but we are way too fat as a nation. My sister-in-law wears a size zero (physically impossible) simply because the dressmakers have kept bumping down the larger sizes so that those women who have always been a size six are still a size six even though they are wearing a tent.

When it comes to the military, why should the DoD want young people who don’t show enough initiative to make a pretense at meeting the basic standards before they walk into the recruiter’s door. It’s not like they are expected to show their doctorate from MIT to enlist.

The military is not a social service agency, it is not a scholarship program with weapons, and most certainly it is not the place to correct the societal ills of young people’s bad habits and lazy living.

Anything over 40 will get you a phone call from a recruiter. Anything over 60 is pretty good and can get you into the more exclusive jobs that the military offers. If put your intrested in the military and get less than a 40 you have a slight chance of making it. Depends on the recruiter.

If she is such political poison, wouldn’t they want all Republicans to saddle up to her?

I mean…if there was a Democrat who was political poison, I would want every dem begging for their endorsement. I would sit on the sidelines and quietly watch, maybe even give subtle encouragement. I wouldn’t be trying to label them “poisionous” so others Dems would run FROM them. I would want them to run TO them.

I don’t get the democrats strategy here.

Besides, I thought Sarah Palin was irrelevant. If so…then why is the WH gloating that they “beat” her? If she is such a weakling, why are they acting like she is their biggest challenge?

can one of the dems on here explain this to me?

Brat4life on November 4, 2009 at 8:38 PM

Heh. That explains a few things.

I DID get some calls from various recruiters, politely told them “no thanks”…but that was in happier times under Bush’s economy…when I thought I wouldn’t have to make a living by being a government-sanctioned murderer.

Funny how just a little time changes so much; now I’m down to church friends for petty computer repair jobs and fruitlessly begging for cr@p jobs at big-box stores.

What the hell. I’m going to look into retaking the ASVAB first thing tomorrow.

Oh! You are one of “those” Marines. Ego has to be constantly stroked, unwilling or unable to see the big picture when it comes to the USMC. It is a rarity but I was refuting your unfounded claim that there is no such thing as a fat Marine. Utterly not true and intellectually dishonest to get in a snit when challenged on it.

And yes, you never said they were stupid, I did. I was talking about youth in general. And to head off the next snit fit- your Marines, of course, are all brilliant intellectuals just serving until it is time to go off on the Rhodes Scholarship. There couldn’t possibly be any Marines of average intelligence running around out there.

You know I really hate being so harsh here but you so took my post out of context and attacked at the very idea that even one Marine could be fat, stupid, or anything less than the ideal that you really deserved it. All the more ironic because of the way you had no problem painting all sailors as fat lazy stupid neer-do-wells.

You are nothing but a thin-skinned hypocrite.

Depending on the service you can get in with a 31, which is painfully low. I don’t know what you need to score to ‘catch someone’s eye’. When I took it with 2 of my friends we all scored in the mid 90′s and ended up as mechanics.

But that was pre-9/11. Hopefully they’re funneling the smart guys towards linguists and intel slots now.

Palin endorses Hoffman on her facebook. 45%

VP Biden shows up in Ny-23 and gives a stump speech. 49%

Yes. It’s the same thing.

portlandon on November 4, 2009 at 7:21 PM

A speech attended by 250 people in a hall that could hold almost 400 and of those 1 in 5 was press.

Trust me, Biden did not win this. The GOP causing loss of time and resources wasted on Dede and her subsequent endorsement of Owens were the main causes.

Sapwolf on November 4, 2009 at 8:48 PM

The most depressing part of all of this, is the revealing ignorance and stupidity that is Obama and all that permeates around him….and it’s running and ruining our country at Mach speeds. This administration continues to bank on the very, very moronic 52% that got Barry elected.

HighHopes put Obama’s I.Q. at 85. I’ll nudge it up just a little more, but not much. I’ll give his supporting cast, maybe 10 more points, but lose them again, when they do the
obvious and obligatory stomp on the cinders while the great forest fire is burning to hell.

Ask them about ‘street to seat’ (flight school). It’s actually a direct enlistment option now. You come in as a WO1 and 18 or so months later you’re a pilot. Pretty cool.

Then you shouldn’t consider ever signing up, asscake.

And yes they definitely do take low-IQ contenders, if they don’t have an attitude/weight/physique problem. Every army from the earliest one in the history of the entire world needs some form of ‘grunts on the ground’. All the high-tech gizmos in the world won’t replace them. Ours are just better armored and armed than most.

I’d be happy driving a forklift in a depot somewhere or filing official papers if it meant honest work for decent pay, although something with electronics would be way nicer.

And hey mods, can you deep-six this stalker? Please? He/she/it is definitely off whatever meds have been perscribed…

Dark-Star on November 4, 2009 at 8:29 PM

Brat4life is right. Anything over a 45 will pretty much get you through the process when it comes to this qualification though certain programs have higher qualifying levels.

From my experience, the ASVAB is given way too much weight. I once had an individual who, literally, was diagnosed as borderline mentally-retarded. He scored a 92 on his ASVABs and last I knew was still on active duty.

…you couldn’t possibly have known this, not knowing me and being on a keyboard somewhere far away…but you just dropped an anvil on a big old raw nerve there.

I’ve needed glasses for the last decade of my life. Last I heard they don’t take pilots who don’t have 20/20 vision, period, end of story, and there’s no way in hell I can afford LASIK.

I ask you in the name of humanity never to mention being a pilot again. That’s a shattered dream that brings me to tears (literally, right now) to think about.

Yea…and another month of campaigning he would’ve won…

Let’s talk about Virginia – I didn’t see a single Democrat win there last night. It was a clean Republican Sweep.

Let’s talk about ultra-blue New Jersey – the state with a new REPUBLICAN Governor.

Frankly – I hope the White House buries their head in the sand and doesn’t receive the message. Nothing to see here – let them grab at irrelevant straws. I’m feeling very good about the standing of the GOP and the Conservative movement right about now.

HondaV65 on November 4, 2009 at 8:55 PM

“We’re 2-0 against Palin,” a senior administration official says. “The Vice President went in and took on Governor Palin and the other national Republicans who had gotten involved in the race and the White House is sure happy that Owens pulled out that win.”

So you know how to beat them in 2010. “Failed” Republicans outnumber Obama Admin bigwigs by about 3:1. Send Rick Santorum to Wisconsin and Palin to Alabama and Dick Armey to Florida in the same week, and have them call out The Won. He’ll be screaming into telephones, down there in the bunker next to the Big Board. He’ll have more Air Force planes shuttling apparatniks around than running sorties in Afghanistan. He can’t help himself. IT’S ALL ABOUT HIM, AND HE’S GOT TO WIN EVERY TIME. And remember, The Won never loses. Somebody else fails him and his destiny.

Janos Attila-the-Hun-yadi on November 4, 2009 at 8:53 PM

I don’t invent reality, I just observe it.

That’s also what every army has been, is, and will be. Not a pretty thing to acknowledge, but it is.

Sadly, in our fallen world there has often been a time when men (and women) had to act in unison to kill, maim, and destroy as much as possible as efficiently as possible. Sometimes it has been purely in self-defense (WW2 for example) and other times not quite so. It’s an ugly institution, but one that is absolutely necessary.

As for ’stalking’, you popped up recently to call me a ‘f’cking’ something-or-other, so don’t flatter yourself. Grow up and stop hyperventilating about yourselftrying to talk sense to a retarded drama queen.

If NY23 was Palin versus Obama she almost beat him with an uber nerdy, camera shy, inarticulate, uncharismatic, deer-in-the-headlights, independent party candidate who ran a short campaign against a strong anti-Obama-health-care, pro military candidate and with the name of the GOP candidate still on the ballot. Some victory.
