Quotes of the day

“‘I think time was the biggest factor, and if [Hoffman had] had a bit more time, he would have won,’ said Everett Wilkinson, a South Florida-based tea party organizer who was watching the contest closely. ‘I wouldn’t consider it a loss. I think we were successful.’

“‘He just got there late, that’s all,’ Armey said. ‘We think small-government conservatives had a big victory last night.’”

“What was learned Tuesday is that the American voter is absolutely, totally, unremittingly disgusted with both political parties. More than anything, the American voter is desperate for political leadership…

“Add another American metaphor to the political landscape: the cattle stampede. Independent voters across the U.S. have become like the massive cattle herd John Wayne drove from Texas to Kansas in ‘Red River.’ These voters are spooked and on the run, a political stampede that veered left in November 2008 and now right a mere year later. They will keep running—crushing incumbents, candidates and political models of the left and right—through November 2010 and onto 2012 until they find a person or party capable of leadership appropriate to our unsettled times. And yes, Virginia, the possibility of a man on a white horse in 2012 is not out of the question.”

***
“‘I think the conservative movement and the Republican leadership can pretty rapidly come to an agreement that defeating Pelosi in 2010 and Obama in 2012 is worth sorting things out for,’ Mr. Gingrich said.

“Mr. Gingrich said that throughout history, political leaders had emerged to steer parties to power by reconciling competing factions. Asked which Republicans had the stature to do so now, he replied: ‘That will happen. Or it will not.’”

Come on folks.
In 2008 the conservatives stayed home and the independents fell for the ‘hope and change’ hype.

This year, some conservatives showed up, and the independents are running away from Obama as fast as they can.

I think the chatter will be over soon about this race. After all, it’s really too silly.

The article that made the most sense was that this was a very good learning experience for some of the organizers.

McCain was a horrible candidate.

The Right was not excited and indys broke for the smoke and mirrors… and BHO had a complicit press… and he still only garnered 53%.

The danger will come in the primaries. I noted previously that McCain failed to get 50% of the vote in 21 of the first 23 contests. Conservatives were split (I was one of the <1% supporting Duncan Hunter). If there is a viable candidate to get out in front before IA and NH… BHO can be defeated… but 2012 is a long way off.

Is it me or does Hoffman come off as a really creepy Fred Rogers?

I still think the really big lesson here is the utter shockwave that occurred when conservative voters stood up and told the GOP leadership “no, we will not vote for that woman in the name of electability.”

2008 was the lesson to question “electability” and NY-23 was the trial run for 2010. The GOP leadership learned from this election, or they didn’t. They have the ability to unite the party and defeat Pelosi but that isn’t going to happen if they repeat the scene where Newt told the Republicans to STFU and vote for Scuzzy.

highhopes on November 4, 2009 at 10:50 PM

NY23 brings home the fact that the Conservative Movement is off target and out of phase. Overall we lack a solid, specific message and strategy. Hoffman and others spend most of their time generalizing rather than being bold and specific. U.S. voters want specifics. No generalizations!

So, one conservative win and two Obama losses give me Hope for change in 2010.

This is not normal. A new American presidency, especially this one, should not be in this much trouble 10 months into a four-year term.

Methinks it’s time for the WSJ to show Daniel Henninger the door, as he’s becoming more obtuse the more he writes for that page. I can think of quite a few recent Presidents for whom the above statement applies: Carter, Clinton, Ford, Truman, even Kennedy and Reagan (Oh, NOES!) to certain degrees. I can also think of quite a few pre-FDR Presidents that had this issue too.

Restlessness in dealing with new Presidents, much like restlessness in dealing with wars longer than a year or two, is a feature, not a bug.

Darvin Dowdy on November 4, 2009 at 10:51 PM

I disagree. Here is what I see….
1>Republican establishment can’t ignore conservatives anymore. This inexperience bunch of folks sidelined GOP candidate and still managed significant portion of the vote.
2>Conservatives can’t win due to lack of institutional strength (party recognition, GOTV, Campaign experience etc.)

There are lessons for both sides:
1>Establishment GOP needs to start promoting/supporting conservative candidates. At the very least Fiscal Conservatives. If that does not happen there will be more of such situations.
2>Conservatives need to take control of GOP at grassroots level. Join the local party in droves. Primary liberal republicans with strong conservatives.

If both don’t work together mutual destruction is guaranteed. That in turn assures destruction of “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”.

I did support Hoffman. Not because I am not a Republican anymore. Just that the candidate selected by republicans in this race was even liberal than democrat. It was more about teaching the party establishment morons a lesson. Get them to realize that if you don’t stand for anything, don’t count on my support. Rather my opposition is guaranteed in such a situation. And I will pay closer attention to primaries going forward. Also “not one red cent to NRCC, NRSC and RNC.”, until they prove they are worthy of trust and stand for something. In this case I think we won despite the defeat.

antisocial on November 5, 2009 at 12:55 AM

Karl Rove wrote a WSJ op-ed piece on Oct. 28 pointing to the races we should look at. In addition to the obvious ones, Rove highlighted a few others.

Rove: “If Republicans also win the races for lieutenant governor and attorney general [in Virginia] by five points or more, it will strengthen the case of those predicting a GOP ‘wave’ in 2010.”

Outcome: The GOP candidates won both offices by double digit margins (13-14 points).

Rove: “Also watch the races for the 100-member Virginia House of Delegates. Republicans are hoping to add four seats to the 53 they now have. The bigger the GOP gains, the larger the warning for Democrats nationally.”

Outcome: The GOP netted 5 seats, with a sixth too close to call.

“Finally, the Republican-endorsed candidate for Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court, Judge Joan Orie Melvin, is mounting a strong effort against Democrat Jack Panella, despite a $1 million ad blitz targeting her that’s bankrolled by Philadelphia trial lawyers. A GOP victory would indicate trouble for Democrats in a state Mr. Obama carried by 10 points.”

Outcome: Melvin won by 6 points, giving Republicans a 4-3 edge on the state supreme court.

The Philadelphia Inquirer: “Melvin’s victory shifts the political balance on the state’s most powerful bench to Republican, and could portend a re-energized conservative base in the 2010 gubernatorial and congressional elections.

“With 91 percent of ballots counted, Melvin had won every suburban county around Philadelphia except Montgomery, where Democrat Jack Panella of Easton led by only a few hundred votes.

” ‘It’s clear to me she won because of the wins in the Philadelphia suburbs, and that’s something other Republican statewide candidates have not been able to do in recent years,’ said G. Terry Madonna, professor and pollster at Franklin and Marshall College.”

What was learned…?

OK, I’ll bite.

How about no more RINOs on Republican tickets?

How about exposing the Global Warming/Climate Change and the “Coming Green Economy” as a complete HOAX and not giving it the dignity of polite conversation?

How about exposing The Community Reinvestment Act, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and anyone else responsible for our economic collapse.

How about closing “K Street”?

How about writing legislation in plain language in under twenty pages that every American can understand?

Need more..?

There is a revolution afoot. The times they are a’changin.

I was very surprised to see this article on the ultra-liberal wcbstv.com website:

The People Have Spoken: Lower Taxes Or You’re Gone
Stunning Results In Westchester, Nassau & N.J. Show That People Are Fed Up With Being Asked To Shoulder Load

When it came to the issue of property taxes at the polls on Tuesday, incumbents paid the price.

In the suburbs of New York City, two Democrats are out of their jobs while one is fighting for his political life.

In New Jersey, where residents pay the highest property taxes in the country, the new governor-elect warned there would be no quick fix.

“Our property taxes, I have told everyone from the beginning, this isn’t a silver bullet issue,” Chris Christie said.

Silver bullet or not, the voters have spoken. Now they’re waiting for results.

“What happened to the change we can believe in?”

Gibbs: “You can’t buy commercials on MSNBC for nothing.”

Bwahahahahahahahahaa!!!!!! Good gravy Gibbs! MSNBC has been the advertising department of the Obama White House and Chrissy is the lead cheerleader!

The irony of his statement is delicious!

“just got there late (with Hoffman).”

Too bad.

Let’s not repeat that mistake in NV to replace Harry Reid.

We need a REAL conservative – Sharron Angle. I have known her personally for over 3 years – she is a straight shooter – in both ways – literally and figuratively.

“…is more experienced and more conservative than all of her competitors combined.”

-Channel 3 KVBC Las Vegas 10-21-09

One of her major opponents is a lawyer – think tort reform will get his attention?

The other is former head of NV GOP. Enough said.

Check out Sharron on the issues.

The guy had no knowledge about the specific district and its problems. How would more time have helped that?

Speedwagon82

How would more time help a guy who needs more time to bone up on local issues? You really asked that question?

We need a REAL conservative who sounds like he/she knows what he/she is talking about. Not saying this lady isn’t, I’m just making a point. Hoffman was not that, and that as much as anything contributed to his defeat.

Just running conservatives for the sake of running conservatives ain’t gonna get it done. If we don’t run competent, likable, well-spoken candidates, we’re not going to win anything.

xblade on November 5, 2009 at 2:18 AM

Lowden should be the rep nominee to oust that despicable turd Reid.

Sharron is all of that, and more.

Just saw Sharron speak at the NVRA versus Tark and Lowden – Sharron easily had the best received talk.

I’ve also seen her speak versus Dean Heller, who beat her by only 400 votes in 2006 GOP primary. He was the incumbent NV Sec. State at the time (and now doing a great job in DC, by the way!) Check out Heller’s votes – voted against TARP, etc., etc. You’ll get more of the same from Sharron.

I’ve known her personally for 3 1/2 years, flown her around the state, etc. A real class act, and the genuine article.

Check her out in these interviews.

Interesting story on the front page of the Post, as we focus on the Republican-True Conservative dichotomy, and the meaning of Tuesday’s vote: “Va. Republicans pledge to steer towards center”.

Apparently McDonnell is not convinced that Hoffmaneesque strategies are not necessarily the way to win.

Bleeds Blue on November 5, 2009 at 6:04 AM

McCain was a horrible candidate.

Yep. The Beltway Brains shoved him over the finishline. And they think THEY are going to pick OUR candidate in 2012… THEY had better think again.

I will NOT vote for Mitty or Hucky. Period. Or Pawlenty, or Can’tor…

I WILL vote for Sarah, Bachman, Liz Cheney, Mike Pence.

More than anything, the American voter is desperate for political leadership…

No, more than anything else I want political leaders to leave me alone!

I will tell you the most important thing we can learn from this election. Reject the pessimists who say we are all doomed! Believe God! Persistence breaks resistance!

The Seals
1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: Zech. 1.8 ; 6.3 and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
3 ¶ And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4 And there went out another horse that was red: Zech. 1.8 ; 6.2 and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
5 ¶ And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; Zech. 6.2, 6 and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
7 ¶ And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Jer. 15.3 · Ezek. 5.12, 17 ; 14.21

At first, I did too, but I see ominous things that could be on the horizon. I noted that too in the quote I copied, afterwards.

“Add another American metaphor to the political landscape: the cattle stampede.

That’s a good analogy. I was thinking about this the other day, politicians will be courting the independents big time. If you claim to be a dem or Republican, well no one cares, your mind is made up already. That’s my impression anyhoo.
