Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on November 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
After three campaign appearances in two weeks by Barack Obama, two visits by VP Joe Biden, and a takeover of the Jon Corzine campaign by the White House, the White House had this to say about the race before New Jersey voters rejected Corzine and Obama in favor of their first Republican governor in over a decade:
On Friday White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said, “Whatever the results are, I don’t think they portend a lot in dealing with the future.”
Gibbs pointed out that Democrats won the New Jersey and Virginia governorships in 2001, despite the fact that then-President George W. Bush was at the height of his popularity and Republicans went on to win seats in Congress in 2002.
Maybe they should have thought of that before Obama and Corzine said this over the weekend:
In a final campaign swing on behalf of the only governor seeking re-election this fall, President Obama on Sunday pitched Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine’s bid as a key component for the White House to make good on its political promises.
“He’s one of the best partners I have in the White House. We work together,” Mr. Obama said. “We know our work is far from over. … We are two days away from making sure that New Jersey has the kind of qualified leadership that it deserves,” Mr. Obama told a raucous crowd. “We are two days away from re-electing Jon Corzine to another four years.”
Mr. Corzine, entering the final push of his close re-election bid, wrapped himself in Mr. Obama’s brand, calling him “our friend, our partner.” Citing Mr. Obama’s win a year ago, he said a victory on Tuesday would help him support the White House’s agenda.
“I’m here to ask you a simple question: Are you ready to keep it going?” Mr. Corzine said. “Today I am standing with President Obama. That tells you everything you need to know.”
Indeed it does.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

“I’m here to ask you a simple question: Are you ready to keep it going?” Mr. Corzine said. “Today I am standing with President Obama. That tells you everything you need to know.”
He spoke the truth when he said, “It tells you everything you need to know.” ‘Nuff said. That’s why he tanked.

On second thought…
Im much more GLAD that we won new jersey and lost ny-23, than the other way around
all the news orgs, to my surprise, are harping up “republican governors”, and theres a small asterik of “only bright spot is dem congress win in a squeaker”. governor > one of 435 congressmen
the REAL thing, though, is that there will be another election for ny-23 in 12 months. and the republican will win that one for sure.
so it’s: get a seat now, stay in the minority, and have hoffman be an ‘incumbent’ in 2010, but lose NJ…..OR….. win NJ now, and get the seat in 12 months
no brainer
owens will vote yes on something: cap and trade, health care, something…. that the gop can hit him over the head with.

I think the best lesson learned from Yesterday is to stay away from RINOs (who are NOT the same as moderates) and run hard on Fiscal Conservatism. Do not sacrifice Social Conservatism, most of this country still shares traditional values, but push hard against Obama and Pelosi on fiscal issues and clearly state what you stand for.
Another lesson learned, Obama can not moboilize his cult like followers without his name on the ticket. They remained in their dorms getting high.
Daemonocracy on November 4, 2009 at 8:18 AM
Add on top of that the fact that Owens is moderate enough the kos endorsed Scozzafava. It’s highly unlikely he’ll serve as a rubber stamp for Pelosi, especially given the election battle he’s looking at just a year from now.
Hoffman = Dream
Scozzafava = Nightmare
Owens = Meh

njpat on November 4, 2009 at 8:22 AM
Which was basically to say that the Corzine loss was bigger than the Owens win. People are just down because, after the first two wins, we really wanted the trifecta. We were running on emotion and forgot that Hoffman’s campaign got a lot further than it was ever supposed to. It accomplished its primary objective.
Last night was a great night.
BadgerHawk on November 4, 2009 at 8:23 AM
I personally think the VA race is more indicative of the backlash the Dems are starting to face in the polls. For one, there was no independent running in the race like in NJ to draw votes away from either candidate. The number of people who did in fact vote for the independent candidate could have made it a Dem win in NJ. #2 is the tremendous margin that McDonnel won by, 58% to 41%. Now that is a landslide in anyone’s book.

Another point guys….those of you who love using the term “Sour Grapes” should be using it now when describing Obama’s statements on this. They act like they didn’t want the wins, when in reality, they wanted them so bad, their teeth hurt. It is sour grapes to claim you didn’t want something after you failed in all your efforts to achieve it.

ted c on November 4, 2009 at 8:40 AM
So the GOP scoring two HUGE wins in states Obama carried comfortably just 365 days ago – including NEW FREAKING JERSEY (D) – and the MSM yawns. Apparently, there was no “permanent realignment,” but that doesn’t matter.
Democrats win meaningless house races in two or three spots (A democrat wins in a heavily Democrat district in CA, and NY-23 ends up breaking for a few points to the Democrat who was endorsed by a bad GOP candidate who quit because she was a major loser). Well, these were meaningless to the MSM when the GOP looked like they would pull out upsets.
The headlines? BELLWETHER – THE GOP IS DOOMED AND IN “CIVIL WAR.” Subhead: Republicans mange to eek out wins in governorships, BUT THEY STILL SUCK
Exit question – The Democrats seemed obsessed with calling Palin a “quitter” not too long ago (and they continue to).
Well, then. What was Dede Scozzowhatever? She was a quitter, but she endorsed the Obamacrat. The Obamacrats like quitters, apparently. So therefore, quitters become OK when they’re Democrats or they support Democrats. Apparently.
See how this works? ANYTHING is OK as long as you’re a Democrat. What a party, huh?

Governors play a roll in redistricting. If a Democratic legislature tries to stack the deck to heavily in their favor, the governor can veto it. Having governors in those states could be worth 5 to 10 extra seats in the House after the next census.

Two very big wins for the Republicans.
Two very big failures for the Democrats.
It will give the moderate Democrats ammunition to vote against the far left, liberal bills being pushed by Obama, Pelosi and Reid.
If Democrats had won those two elections, the Democrats and the Media would be honking their horns long and loud that this was new confirmation that the liberal Democrat way is the only way. But they lost, big.
The vote for President in 2008 can split into two reasons:
a) Vote against Bush.
b) Vote to have a black President.
It would have taken a very bad Democratic candidate to could have won the 2008 election.

Sure, I wanted Hoffman to win, but Owens will not take his 48% as a mandate to run off and support Pelosicare and Cap & Destroy… he may just add another D “no” vote against Pelosi… which will piss her off.
Owens can read the tea leaves. He’s not stupid enough to buy the spin that last night had nothing to do with health care and deficits. He’ll stay as far away from Pelosi as a Dem can… that is, if he wants to keep that seat.
