Iran thinks an open hand more “perverted” than a clenched fist

If Barack Obama hoped to woo the radical Islamist mullahs ruling Iran with a “clenched” iron fist, Supreme Leader Ali Khameini just gave Obama a diplomatic slap in the face.   Khameini rejected Obama’s “open hand,” calling talks with the US a “perverted” notion, and warned Iranians not to be deceived by smooth-talking Americans:

Iran’s supreme leader, spurning what he described as several personal overtures from President Obama, warned Tuesday that negotiating with the United States would be “naive and perverted” and that Iranian politicians should not be “deceived” into starting such talks.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 70, said Obama has approached him several times through oral and written messages. It was the second time that Khamenei, who wields ultimate political and religious authority in Iran, has referred to the president’s outreach. …

Khamenei said he had responded in March to Obama’s overtures, referring to a speech in which he said he would wait for changes in U.S. policy toward Iran before reassessing ties.

Since then, Khamenei said, “what we have witnessed is completely the opposite of what they have been saying and claiming. On the face of things, they say, ‘Let’s negotiate.’ But alongside this, they threaten us and say that if these negotiations do not achieve a desirable result, they will do this and that. … Whenever they smile at the officials of the Islamic revolution, when we carefully look at the situation, we notice that they are hiding a dagger behind their back,” he said. “They have not changed their intentions.”

Neither have the Iranians.  Despite playing with the West over control of enriched uranium, they have shown no intention of dialing back their nuclear plans.  While Europe fumes, the US has hesitated for months in dealing with the situation, apparently convinced that their status as the Non-Bush would open doors that got slammed in Bill Clinton’s face more than ten years ago.

All of this shows a remarkable naivete in the Obama administration — and a big missed opportunity.  For the last several months, Europe has had a willingness to get tough with Iran that could have been used to push Russia into some concessions.  Instead, Obama gave up his biggest marker without anything in return by reversing the US position on land-based missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic.  Russia then rewarded Obama by rejecting any effort to tighten sanctions on Iran.

The open hand has been the empty hand, and the Iranians know it.  They have taken their measure of this administration, and see nothing in it to deflect themselves from their race to get a nuclear weapon. As Jim Hoft notes, the Iranian people wonder whether Obama is serious about democracy and freedom, too:

The brave Iranian democrats are marching again today against the brutal killer regime on the 30 Year Anniversary of the siege on the US Embassy in Tehran. The Iranians are protesting in Tehran, Tabriz … The protesters called out to the Americans:

“Obama, Obama, Are you with the regime or with us?”

That actually makes me cringe. I wonder if michelle is still proud?

The Iranians must be racists.

VegasRick on November 4, 2009 at 12:20 PM

This is not good…

I seriously fear for Obama’s sanity and mental health right now.

Expect Obama to win some sort of award in the near future.

* facepalm *

Unleash out oil companies and start drilling for oil. Then, if need be, destroy Iran’s energy production to get them to heel.

WashJeff on November 4, 2009 at 12:22 PM

But wasn’t it a clenched fist that got Obama elected?

Connie on November 4, 2009 at 12:22 PM

calling talks with the US a “perverted” notion,

You have an incredible ability to make a grammatical error, and have it make more sense…notion/nation
Under Obama it is a perverted notion….

right2bright on November 4, 2009 at 12:22 PM

What if Obama offered a reach around?

Daemonocracy on November 4, 2009 at 12:22 PM

“Iran thinks an open hand more “perverted” than a clenched fist”

Wouldn’t that depend on what is clenched in the fist?

Incorrect. With Iran, as with Afghanistan, the dithering IS the strategy. It is designed to buy time to strengthen the hand of The Precedent’s allies (the mullahs in Iran and the Taliban in Afghanistan) and to harm the US and our interests. Take some time and notice the thread that weaves its way through all of The Precedents actions and policies. Think about it and you will eventually come to this same, obvious, conclusion.

I think he’s already answered that question with his silence a few months ago.

scalleywag on November 4, 2009 at 12:27 PM

Obama has approached him several times through oral and written messages

He’s waiting for the appropriate level of groveling and sniveling from Obama.

While Europe fumes

And keeps right on trading with Iran.

I hope they’re not holding their breath on that one. They won’t get an answer, which will in itself be the answer.

Iran means nothing. It’s the GOP civil war in District 23 New York that concerns The Won.

I see a nation in serious need of finger-breaking.

But it won’t happen. Aside from the utter lack of will, we’d have to utterly abandon one of the two nations we’re currently mired in to have a chance as well as fight like we meant it. Iran has learned from our failures. They will have a whole deck of cards up their bloodstained sleeves in case of invasion.

Dark-Star on November 4, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Talking to Iran, or talking to a liberal, it’s like playing chess with a monkey. You think you’ve got “checkmate” and they eat the king!

I agree with this assessment 100% as Barry is obviously mentally unstable. But I try to find the upside in stuff, so here’s hoping obama’s break with reality happens on live television; with maybe some nasty tourettes style outbursts, followed by foaming at the purple mouth.

NickelAndDime on November 4, 2009 at 12:41 PM

I can see this is going to be a problem.

They know Obama is weak. But are they estimating the Nation via Obama is what I wonder.

That hope and change working for the liberals? I don’t see anything good coming from it.

atlgal on November 4, 2009 at 12:53 PM

I know Barry will never do this, but does anybody else (in the world) really have a problem with just nuking that little piece of real estate we call Iran? If we just simply “leveled” it, we’d solve a major problem, ultimately saving more lives, and on the upside, nobody would frick with us for a long long time.

Just a thought.

The Hillary 3 am phone call turns out to be a non-stop phone ringing at 2 am, 2: 38, 2:45, 2:50, …you get the picture.

And every time it (the red phone) rang, it was answered by
“We are sorry, you have reached….” automatic answering voicemail. /And the WH promptly deleted whatever messages being recorded.

Poor Barry…he loves islam and here’s an islamic state that exemplifies all the finer things found in islam. Hanging homosexuals, stoning or beating wayward wives, execution of political dissidents,(I’m not quite sure where he stands on that…) still taking hostages… Kinda hard to spin that crap in to a “religion of Peace”.
And uh…I can hardly believe that a nation that brought us Khomeini’s “little green book” of sexual perversion dares to use the word “perverted” in any context whatsoever.
The little green book outlines the proper islamic way to have sex with an infant, farm animals…how far you can go without having your acts deemed “homosexual”…the list goes on.

Now I’m torn between two tag lines… Both!

No islam…Know Peace
Know islam…throw up!

Obama is a liar and Truth is
killing his Marxist agenda.
