Hillary promises “an Israeli capital in East Jerusalem”
posted at 10:12 am on November 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The incompetence of American diplomacy reached a new nadir yesterday in an incident vershadowed by the elections in the US. Hillary Clinton told Al-Jazeera in an interview that the US wants to see an Israeli capital in East Jerusalem. Apparently, the chief diplomat of the United States and the woman who ran on her experience in foreign affairs did not remember that East Jerusalem is primarily Palestinian:
Egypt and other Arab nations reacted with strong concern to remarks Clinton made in Jerusalem on Saturday. She caused a stir when she said with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at her side that his government’s offer to restrain — but not stop — settlement activity in Palestinian areas was unprecedented.
And in a new twist Tuesday, Clinton made what appeared to be an inadvertent slip of the tongue in a television interview with the al-Jazeera network, referring to the goal of “an Israeli capital in east Jerusalem.”
It has not been U.S. policy to favor including east Jerusalem in an Israeli capital; the Palestinians claim it as their capital, and the issue is one of the most important and delicate points that would have to be settled in any final peace deal between the two parties.
Two Clinton aides monitoring the interview alerted her to the mistake and that portion of the interview was retaped so she could correct herself.
Anyone who has bothered to read the newspapers on Israel knows that East Jerusalem is part of the disputed territory. While American Presidents have talked for decades about Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, not one has insisted on East Jerusalem. It’s so incompetent that one has to wonder if Hillary has any real understanding of the conflict at all.
There are some who think that Hillary could disconnect herself from a bumbling Obama administration and make a credible run at the Democratic nomination in 2012. Unfortunately, Hillary herself has been a large part of the bumbling of this White House. She has been an embarrassment on the world stage, with the “reset” button for Russia that was mistranslated, and written in Latin characters rather than Cyrillic, intended as a stunt to insult the outgoing Bush administration. There was also Hillary’s highly undiplomatic opinion offered publicly that European democracy was incomprehensible, as well as a Johnny-come-lately compared to the US, which shows an ignorance of history as well as diplomacy.
Just another example of “smart power.”

Hmmm… This post of yours hadn’t been up by the time I finally read down the posts and responded to AnninCA. However, I have a small couple of problems with what you posted. For one, the “narrowly avoided gaffe” doesn’t say that she didn’t agree with Bill, although I can give you that it IS a way out to possibly clarify by saying that’s not what SHE wants, but what HE thought would be best. For another, the Clinton’s-plural may not be in power now, but the Clinton-singular (Hillary) is. Secretary of State is quite a prestigious and powerful position when it comes to diplomacy. She is the speaker for the President on foreign policy matters overseas.
I think part of the problem here, is that I agree with some of your earlier posts on this. I think Hillary could be a better SoS than she is allowed to be now. I would never want to see her in the White House, as I think her domestic policies are too closely aligned with Obama. However, on foreign policy, I think she being more controlled by Obama than some think, and would be better at the job if she were allowed more a free reign to do her job properly. I feel a bit sorry for her because of this; I think she has to push for policies and such that would not necessarily be her own decisions.
Highlar on November 4, 2009 at 11:49 AM
I agree with you in principle about people making misstatements. However, in this particular case, it is a big deal when our Secretary of State makes such a major misstatement of fact about such an incredibly sensitive international issue that is currently a source of great tension. This misstatement also raises doubt about Mrs. Clinton’s competence in her role. It’s a very big deal that she made this misstatement NOT when she was distracted by other matters, but while talking about these very issues in an interview with a critical newspaper for which she should have been well prepared and on her toes. I suggest you try to imagine Hillary having to correct herself if she had said this:
The great story here for anybody willing to find it, write about it and explain it is this vast left-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president.
— Hillary Rodham Clinton
But she didn’t have to correct herself then because she was well prepared for the role she was playing during that interview. If Hillary must be our Secretary of State, I’d like her to do as good a job representing us as she did representing her lying and philandering husband.

Ed, I’d love to see an “update” on this story with the reaction from the palestinians.
Or should we just watch for the mushroom clouds to start rising over Israel?
UltimateBob on November 4, 2009 at 11:50 AM
I think she might be able to do such, if she weren’t so constrained by the White House to present their case instead of hers.
However, I do agree with you on the competence issue, as I said in my reply to AnninCA as well.

Wonder how people would react if Palestinians claimed ‘East Washington DC’ as their land. This whole ‘dispute’ is a sick farce and our incompetent leaders are toying with real peoples lives.
The Palestinians have their own states called Jordan and Egypt. They are refugees from the arab muslim wars of aggression against the Jews to destroy their homeland, Israel.
If these idiots just picked up a book, they’re realize what all these conflicts are about, Islam’s goal of global domination .
Don’t give the Fakestinians an inch Israel, screw the US administration, bomb Iran while there’s time and hold tight until 2012, when the US electorate will kick these corrupt leftist anti-freedom, anti-American, anti-semitic douchebags out of office.

And another even bigger examlple of “smart power”:
Another “Isolated Attack”.
Five British soldiers are dead today, fatalities of see-no-Islam political correctness. The story from the AP:
KABUL— An Afghan policeman opened fire on British soldiers in the volatile southern province of Helmand, killing five before fleeing, British and Afghan authorities said Wednesday, raising concerns about discipline within the Afghan forces and possible infiltration by insurgents.
The attack Tuesday afternoon came a month after an Afghan policeman on patrol with U.S. soldiers fired on the Americans, killing two.
Presidential spokesman Humayun Hamidzada said it was an isolated attack.
Sure. Just as last month’s Afghan attack on US forces, killing two, was an isolated attack. And just as September’s Afghan attack on US forces, wounding one, was an isolated attack. And just as the September ambush at Ganjgal, likely aided by Afghan forces, that killed four US Marines was an isolated attack. And just as August’s “fire sack” ambush, likely aided by Afghan forces, killing Marine Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard, was an isolated attack. It’s simply amazing how many “isolated” attacks there have been (see below for more).
The commander of international forces in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, said he discussed the shooting with Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar, who “gave me his assurance that this incident will be fully and transparently investigated.”
Woop-de-do.
“We will not let this event deter our resolve to building a partnership with the Afghan National Security Forces to provide for Afghanistan’s future,” he said in a joint statement issued by NATO forces and the ministry.
In other words, all of these dead soldiers are sacrifices Gen. McChrystal is willing to make on the altar of multiculturally-driven zealotry.

1) US considers Jerusalem (per Jerusalem Embassy Act)a united city, and a capital of the Jewish state
2) as far as arabs are concerned, all of Isreal is a disputed territory, ergo it is irrelevant what they think or dispute

These past 10 months have been like a nightmare, with the exception of last night. Finally, I felt some hope, and change, and loved it.
Now, with Hillary, I can’t help but wonder…could this have been said intentionally? I think it’s abundantly clear she’s not happy in her position. I suspect she loves the job, but not the boss. He seems to use, and dispose of people at his will, and she’s feeling ostracized. What better way to try, and make him look the fool?

1) I believe our diplomats have always been careful to avoid the Jerusalem issue in public discussions. This is why “the interview was retaped so she could correct herself.”
2) If it is “irrelevant” what Arabs “think or dispute,” why has every American administration since 1967 tried to promote a peaceful, negotiated resolution to the disputes between Israel, her Arab neighbors, and the Palestinian Arabs? Are we all that anti-Israeli, or anti-Semitic, or just stupid? I don’t think so.
Loxodonta on November 4, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Hillary is supposed to be America’s top diplomat.
The subject of Jerusalem and all of Isreal is very delicate. Every word must be carefully weighed to make sure that exactly the right message is being sent.
There is no room for any mistakes in this area. If Hillary isn’t aware of this, then she needs to resign as Secretary of State.

I would not want her running everything, but I do think she could be a competent SoS, because she IS an independent person, and has her own strong mind on issues. I think Obama keeps close tabs on her and has her doing things HIS way instead of hers as SoS, and I’m sure that frustrates her to no end.

Well, as I haven’t refreshed in a bit trying to read all that was being said (I’m not sure how this devolved from HRC to a religious debate, but more power to it! Love religious debates!)…:
According to the Jewish faith, the Messiah has NOT been born yet. Those who follow the Jewish faith do not believe that Jesus was the Messiah, but more along the lines of a prophet…but not the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the CHRISTIAN Messiah, and the Christian faith extends only from his birth. Now, Christians DO believe the same as Jews going further back in time from that point, as both religions believe in what Christians call the Old Testament. Jews (of the religion, not the race), however, do not believe the Christian New Testament is a religious text as it is all based upon blasphemy (per the Jewish faith, not my own…I am a Christian).
Highlar on November 4, 2009 at 2:41 PM

Any Christian-Arab who musters the temerity to climb up on their hind legs and howl about how unfair life is under Israeli rule, simply has no credibility within the larger Christian community.

Per Wikipedia: Religions: Orthodox Christian 83.9%, Muslim 9.9%, Armenian-Gregorian 3.9%, Roman Catholics 0.8%, Jews 0.1%, other 1.4% (2002 census)[6]
Now with a greater portion being Orthodox Christian, might we not conclude that when Putin ordered troops into Georgia, and some Georgian troops were killed, or drug off and tortured…might they not have been Orthodox Christians?
Putin is not a saint, and not destined for a dash board of any vehicle, anytime soon. He’s former KGB, and that makes him in some respects, a cold blooded killer.

* all Greek place names contrary to all historical and cultural reason were converted into Turkish ones.
Why doesn’t anyone howl about the Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus? People have been driven out of their homes, churches have been converted into mosques, and the thriving resort of Famagusta transformed into a ghost town. Nobody cares. Instead, MaxCon obsesses over the trumped-up plight of “Palestinians”– an invented nationality, committed to eradicating a sovereign state in the name of Islamo-supremacism.

Constantinople is no longer Rome.
MOSCOW IS ROME.
In 1453 when the turks conquered Constantinople..Ivan the Great married the Byzantine Emporess and Moscow became the Third Rome and the center of Christendom.

So, answer the question: Why doesn’t the Christendom’s almighty Putin liberate the fugitive Orthodox Christian community of occupied Constantinople (and sacred Hagia Sophia) from the Turkish usurpers?
And why do you imagine Putin gives a rat’s @ss about Christian-Arabs in Muslim-occupied territories?

You know what, pal? You may be maximusconfessor–I can only imagine what you get up to when you’re not ladling out your ignorant bile on this site–but you’re minimuscogitor–and you know nothing about the history of Palestine, except for what you’ve learned in your madrassa.
Alright, Ed. This
is about the limit. Are we going to tolerate “false religion” posts on Hot Air?

Jesus also taught, that what so ever you do to the least of my brothers…that you do unto me. Rather than spout your so called superiority where religion is concerned, maybe you should try to simplify, and practice it.

I don’t quote posts that may be worth banning because of the words they contain. So, all I can tell you is that even though I love Ed, there are certain acts that I am not willing to do with him.

Idont have an iota of sympathy for the supposed palistineans
they dont have one thing that wasnt given to them
we make the payroll for the the pal. authority, we probably cloth and medicate them, they are the truest form of a welfare state otherwise known as guettos which libs are the masters of making.
whether they get what they think they want or not they indiscriminantly target people better than them out of shear hatred for themselves.
the funniest thing is that if they ever did manage to drive Israelis from their land they wouldnt get it. They would be mowed down to make way for some other thugs.
I have no sympathy or tolerance for them.

More likely they would form up into criminal synicates with warlords and go at it. The fighting betw Hamas and Fatah would just be for warm-ups.
Look at what they did in Gaza. The “settlers” left them turnkey, state of the art, agricultural systems–Israel was known as “the salad bowl of Europe” mostly on the strength of high quality, low pesticide hydroponic lettuce that was being grown in Gush Katif. This was all handed over to the Pals. They threw a royal tantrum, that I hope felt really good, and destroyed all this stuff in a matter of days. They don’t have the sense to pound sand in a rathole. Their victimhood has done this to them. They used to be the best educated, most sophisticated Arabs in the whole Middle East. Along comes Edward Said to pollute the minds of the intellectuals, Arafat to corrupt the young and the militant (and woe betide any 12-16 y/o he could get his hands on), and now they have become a caricature of Alla-hu-akbarring stone-throwers–never missing an opportunity to miss an opportunity. If they could get it together to win the war, for sure they would lose the peace.

Let answer you in a language you do understand: Kul kalb, bigi yumo.
Your brothers around the world are killing people indiscriminately. I love it when the inhumane pose as human rights advocate. You’re a bigoted buffoon.

reminds me of the lefties who supported the supposed just reclamation of Rhodesia.
Totally acceptable to kill white farmers and drive them from their fields because they have no right to be there.
Of course not one of the liberators bothered to learn how to farm so a ” breadbasket nation ” is reduced to squallor and threatens any decency that neighbors it.
Of course ask any libtard or u.n. punk and this is just the way it should be.
lefties are the great global ghetto builders and when they dont get what they want they rile the masses and cause untold horror.
