Hillary promises “an Israeli capital in East Jerusalem”
posted at 10:12 am on November 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The incompetence of American diplomacy reached a new nadir yesterday in an incident vershadowed by the elections in the US. Hillary Clinton told Al-Jazeera in an interview that the US wants to see an Israeli capital in East Jerusalem. Apparently, the chief diplomat of the United States and the woman who ran on her experience in foreign affairs did not remember that East Jerusalem is primarily Palestinian:
Egypt and other Arab nations reacted with strong concern to remarks Clinton made in Jerusalem on Saturday. She caused a stir when she said with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at her side that his government’s offer to restrain — but not stop — settlement activity in Palestinian areas was unprecedented.
And in a new twist Tuesday, Clinton made what appeared to be an inadvertent slip of the tongue in a television interview with the al-Jazeera network, referring to the goal of “an Israeli capital in east Jerusalem.”
It has not been U.S. policy to favor including east Jerusalem in an Israeli capital; the Palestinians claim it as their capital, and the issue is one of the most important and delicate points that would have to be settled in any final peace deal between the two parties.
Two Clinton aides monitoring the interview alerted her to the mistake and that portion of the interview was retaped so she could correct herself.
Anyone who has bothered to read the newspapers on Israel knows that East Jerusalem is part of the disputed territory. While American Presidents have talked for decades about Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, not one has insisted on East Jerusalem. It’s so incompetent that one has to wonder if Hillary has any real understanding of the conflict at all.
There are some who think that Hillary could disconnect herself from a bumbling Obama administration and make a credible run at the Democratic nomination in 2012. Unfortunately, Hillary herself has been a large part of the bumbling of this White House. She has been an embarrassment on the world stage, with the “reset” button for Russia that was mistranslated, and written in Latin characters rather than Cyrillic, intended as a stunt to insult the outgoing Bush administration. There was also Hillary’s highly undiplomatic opinion offered publicly that European democracy was incomprehensible, as well as a Johnny-come-lately compared to the US, which shows an ignorance of history as well as diplomacy.
Just another example of “smart power.”

The concept of splitting a capitol city as a ‘foreign policy’ position is dumber than saying Iraq should be split into 3 regions with a central government (like the US is split into 50 regions with a central government).
ALL OF ISRAEL had Palestinians at one point. It makes no sense to split Jerusalem in half. It would be like us carving out China Town, or the Mexican section of DC and setting that up as a different state.
I understand the attempt to laugh at Clinton, but the Israel/Palestinian ‘peace process’ has been a joke from the time we stopped letting Israel defend itself.
ALL OF JERUSALEM should be the capitol of Israel. Why would we want to create another East/West Berlin situation?
ThackerAgency on November 4, 2009 at 10:29 AM
This is the same idiot that loudly proclaimed her valuable nonexistent “experience” in world affairs and diplomacy. Not only is she not competent to run the State Department, she’s not competent to run the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, and competence isn’t required to run that particular department anywhere.

Granted Israel might not WANT East Jerusalem. But it seems like it would just be a safe haven for terrorists in the heart of Israel. Gaza and the West Bank are bad enough for Israeli citizens.
Again, if we would let Israel defend itself, this wouldn’t be an issue. But we want everyone to fight a ‘nice’ war. I just hope when we no longer have the dominant fire power that our enemies will want to fight a ‘nice war’ with us. Somehow looking at history, I doubt other nations would be so kind as to not wipe us out. America is the only nation in history to want to fight a war by ‘winning hearts and minds’.

There were a couple of houses in East Jerusalem owned by Jews. They had to flee for their lives during the arab riots in the 1920s. Even though they still retained legal title, they bought the houses back from squatters a couple of years ago. After it was challenged in court and the radical arabs lost, they moved in. Hillary issued a statement condemning it. She was out of line.

There’s the problem right there. A huge percentage of the American people aren’t paying attention to what’s going on in the world.
They skip over the important stories and turn right to the entertainment or sports section of the paper. They can tell you the latest sports scores, or the birthdays of every one of Britney Spears’ kids, but they don’t know that the Democrats have controlled the house and senate since 2006.

Every flub by Obama, Hillary, Biden and Co. has to be looked through the prism of: “What if George Bush or Dick Cheney had said it? What would have been the reaction to it?”
Sure it may be a simple error, but if it was done by Bush or Cheney the press would be headlining it in every newspaper and TV newscast. It would be the leading joke on all the late night talk shows (“Bush also told his grandkids that Santa Claus lives in the SOUTH Pole!” Yuk, yuk, yuk!) and added another page in a “What an idiot” quotes book to be published later, plus be the Twitter hot topic of the day.
So any hyping of a flub by a Democrat is warranted.

This is why Hillary was the better candidate vs Obama. She would take it to the terrorists and put the Israeli capital in Jeruselem just for spite if nothing else. Think of the possibilities to solve the Iram/NK issues when the islamic terrorists are all dead. Then she could tackle NK and Iran with a smooth first strike against their known nuke facilities with more to come if they don’t see the error of their ways.

She didn’t correct it, her handlers did…she had no idea, that’s the point.
When heads of state, and this will confuse you, speak, each word is and should be stated with deliberation. There is no “let’s start over” or reset button on these kind of speeches.
This isn’t some HotAir post that you can run away from, as you do so often.
This is the real world, of real world politics, and words out of Hillary’s mouth mean something…a correction like her handlers did later on (and the fact that you think this is minor shows how naive you are) is accepted with a nod and a smile, to their face. But a pounding of the desk and anger in private chambers.
This administration is the worst in international politics in over 60 years….
Look what Russia has done to Poland…on an anniversary…like what Obama did to Poland on an anniversary.

Hillary! has been a poorly-camouflaged icon of mediocrity from the time she stepped onto the national stage. Since Dems are always blazingly brilliant in the eyes of the press (remember Jimmy Carter the “nuclear scientist”?), they carried her water during the Clinton years with the “smartest woman in the world” bullcrap. But it wasn’t that hard to cover up her incompetence when she had little to do. Her one shot at glory, Hillarycare, was a massive political failure and that should have been some indication of her subterranean level of effectiveness and her political tin ear.
Now she’s given mostly unimportant mail delivery tasks by Obozo and she can’t even perform those without righteously screwing them up. The idea that Obama would tarnish Hillary!‘s reputation was always kind of silly; it was always more likely that Hillary!‘s ineptitude would end up reflecting badly on Obama.
Cicero43 on November 4, 2009 at 11:21 AM
Bungling a basic detail as the Secretary of State is not a boo boo.
It’s incompetence.
Good lord, this woman can’t even get basic things right. She’s made craptastic flubs in every major encounter she’s had with important foreign leaders.
This is a woman who we are constantly told “does her homework”.

I assure you, you would need to kill more than half of the people in Israel before it would be possible to divide our capitol with the Arabs. It is for us – AS IT WOULD BE FOR ANY NATION IN THE WORLD – a complete and unmitigatable non-starter.
The very IDEA of “dividing Jerusalem” is a grotesque absurdity; making this concept part of America’s foreign policy stance is ugly, pathetic, and ultimately worse than futile – we will not soon forget this treatment at the hands of our erstwhile ally. We have no threat to give a nation as large as yours, but we grow less and less close because of your inconstancy and now outright belligerence…and this makes us sad.
Tell me – what other nation in the world do you hate so much that you think they should divide their holy capitol. . . with their mortal enemies? Is there some parallel in history that your govt is looking at where a verkokteneh plan like this worked?
Does anyone TRULY believe that the Israeli people will EVER agree to this?
Forget it, and for good reason. Hillary and her ilk should be ashamed of themselves, as should anyone who promotes this ridiculous plan while trying to argue they do not have a special set of bad rules for Jews. If you hate Israel and want to wreck it, fine, but don’t be a coward and a liar by saying that you think peace can be created that way. You just want to smash Israel, which makes you as common and contemptible as a steaming heap in the street.
/rant
MogenDavid on November 4, 2009 at 11:35 AM
To me, AnninCA, this isn’t about making a misstatement, and more about what it shows about HRC’s knowledge and diplomacy for the position she is in. Yes, maybe it was just a quick mistake, but it shows (again, personal opinion), a lack of understanding and discretion. She is in a highly diplomatic position, and mistakes like this one can have resounding effects upon international debate with foreign nations (in this case Palestine and Israel). Would you disagree?
And then, there is also the fact mentioned by others of what a field day the media would have had if anyone in the Bush administration had made a gaffe like this one. You can’t deny that it would have become another media example of “just how unintelligent and what a bumbling idiot Bush is”. Even though he was far from such, due to media intervention, a large portion of the country thinks he was.
Highlar on November 4, 2009 at 11:41 AM

And are you really trying to say that Condi didn’t have members of the MSM (who hated her) following her around everywhere ready to pounce on her every gaffe? She worked for W, remember. The reason we didn’t see that many of her gaffes is because she was brilliant and competent. Now put the crack pipe down, slowly.
