Video: Hoffman goes primetime

posted at 4:23 pm on November 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

Can’t find any exit polls yet so this feature segment from last night’s “Hannity” will have to tide you over. Watching this, I’m struck by how serendipitous it is for conservatives that the man of the hour is a mild-mannered accountant who’s bad on TV. The left is dying to demagogue this guy as some sort of terrifying tea-party boogeyman, but … he’s just horribly miscast. He’s the opposite of scary. And his awkwardness, which only seems starker with the Thompsons flanking him, makes him seem that much more “authentic” and populist. More from Dave Weigel:

It all led up to a political speech that was notable largely for its meekness. As Hoffman shifted his weight from side to side and glanced down at his notes, he tossed out only two pieces of red meat — an attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and a promise not to let government “take over health care.”…

At the same time, Hoffman’s mellow nature, and his ability to avoid committing to specific conservative policies, have been the cause of amusement in the press corps and in the candidate’s own campaign. In a mid-October interview with TWI, Hoffman had strayed from the dogmatic conservative response to the stimulus–opposing it outright–and mulled over redirecting more stimulus funding to infrastructure and “job credits.” He gave the same response to another reporter. And another reporter told TWI that interview footage of Hoffman was so bland that it wasn’t worth using. After the Watertown rally, Sandy Caligoire, a Hoffman spokesman, argued that Hoffman’s lack of charisma had become a boon to the campaign.

“People look at Obama and they see how a slick politician can turn on them,” said Caligoire. “Doug’s a regular guy. He’s gotten better as the campaign’s gone on, but he’s a regular guy, and I think that appeals to people.”…

Later in the day, Hoffman fielded another question about Limbaugh from Jude Seymour of the Watertown Daily Times. Asked whether he agreed with Limbaugh’s remarks that Scozzafava had committed “beastiality” by “screwing every RINO (Republican in Name Only),” Hoffman was taken aback. “I’d have to talk with him first,” he said. “I don’t know–that’s Rush Limbaugh. I have no comment to that.” Conservative reporters immediately chastised Seymour for asking the question.

Follow the link for details about how many Beck supporters are apparently on the ground up there right now. Hoffman’s interesting in that regard, too: There’s certainly some overlap between right-wing libertarians who follow Beck and Reagan Republicans who follow Hannity, but the media, at least, seems to be plugging Hoffman into the first category even though he fits both. I wonder why. Exit optimism: As of this moment, he’s north of 80 percent on InTrade as a favorite to win.

Allah!!!!

He’s an ACCOUNTANT!

He’s SUPPOSED to be boring

He’s an AVERAGE guy!

That’s what’s appealing!!!!!! Substance not style!!!!!

But is he north of 80 percent?

John the Libertarian on November 3, 2009 at 4:27 PM

Darn, already fixed.

John the Libertarian on November 3, 2009 at 4:27 PM

Hoffman = nerd.

But, in a good way.

And I like it.

For what it’s worth, Hoffman’s now north of 80 percent on InTrade as a favorite to win.

I like this insight into AP’s thought process.

Optimistic AP and Pessimistic AP. which one wins? We shall see when he re-edits this.

Is Fred Thompson trying to land a job as an Obama Czar? Because he is certainly looking like a Russian Czar from the early 20th century.

Nothing wrong with boring. He’s running for a seat in the House of Representatives. He’ll be one of 435.

Besides, I think we all know how electing someone based solely on personality and charisma worked out.

Fred and Jeri are among our best weapons in the fight for conservatism and freedom from an utterly bloated bureaucratic Gubmint laden with corruption.

Gubmint, get the fack out of my life.

I almost can’t believe my eyes that a real conservative like this guy could rise so quickly so shortly after 08. Well done, sir.

Black Yoshi on November 3, 2009 at 4:34 PM

It’s true, dude is sooo bad for TV that Hannity was visibly smirking (seemingly to say “you’re killin’ me!”) when trying to interview him.

Slightly more entertaining than paint drying and grass growing. Should drive the dems nuts if he’s not totally overshadowed or bowled over.

The universe might end if he and Grayson touch.

NickelAndDime on November 3, 2009 at 4:34 PM

I wonder if they are holding back on the votes because this and the others are being watched very carefully.

We don’t need slick salesmen for the crap sandwich that is the Obama agenda.

We need someone who has an actual job and can get things done.

sleepy-beans on November 3, 2009 at 4:37 PM

Hoffman would make a terrible Game Show Host.

And he wouldn’t be a very good used car salesman either.

In fact he would not do well on a late night infomercial selling ginsu knives.

Or for that matter he could never be a time-share salesman or the mastermind behind a ponzi scheme.

HE IS JUST TOO BORING. BUT HE CAN BE A HERO IF HE KICKS SOME ASS IN ERADICATING THE SLIME-BALLS IN GUBMINT.

Ok I can dream.

upinak on November 3, 2009 at 4:37 PM

The poor guy is out there trying to win an election. How would he be following Rush and listening to every word Rush says? That comment from Rush translated by the reporter certainly is taken out of context. Reporters have no sense of humor. As Rush says “Do not try this at home.”
I love the idea of boring folks in the House and Senate. They aren’t out every night making waitress sandwiches, drinking until day break, or being arrested. They are taking their jobs seriously and actually working. What a concept! Good for the national debt, too.

With a clean shaven face Fred LOOKS like a president and he acts presidential. I was for him in 2008 but he equivocated and stepped into the ring too late and with only one foot. If he jumps in with both feet he is rock solid. And so is his little wifey.

But lets focus on 2010. Forget about 2012.

This is simply a moment of unbridled joy for conservatives. Hopefully the voters won’t eff it up by voting for the other guy. Sorry to lean so hard toward schadenfreude, but the last two times I was this happy about politics were the Sarah Palin announcement and the IOC decision.

We really really need more CPA’s in congress. And we need lots of small business owners. And honesty. A congress who cares more about the country and less about saving their own skin. We need a congress who will listen. A congress who doesn’t shut the door on debates. A congress who doesn’t vote themselves a pay raise while denying a cost of living increase for our senior citizens and turning a blind eye to tax cheats like Rangel.

Time for real change. Now!

Heh…. I understand that the Democrats have been attacking Hoffman as having “no charisma”.

They say that like it’s a bad thing. We saw what Charisma got us in the last election: total lack of experience, skills, judgement, maturity, and humility.

Go, Hoffman! Nice choice, Cuda!

j_galt on November 3, 2009 at 4:54 PM

The Hannity spot was smart politics from whomever set it up: Flank the non-charismatic guy with an actor/senator on one side and an attractive woman on the other (who’s the actor’s wife).

It’s a bit awkward, of course, but the effect is the same. Particularly so because Jeri is such an obvious Hoffman fan.

Reminds me of how the WWE uses a bigger-named star to give “the rub” to its lesser lights. A little charisma transference, if you will.

BTW: Thanks for posting this, AP. We appreciate it.

You 912ers are changing history. Its that important. We are in the middle of an epic change in political mentality (Zeitgeist). This is not a transient phenomenon. Patriotism and the demand for small government is in our DNA, it just needs to be expressed after a long period of dormancy.

Libs are just too embarrassed to show up and vote.

Some of them still have hopenchange bumper stickers and are ashamed to be seen in public.

Others have scarred the vehicles with nasty scratches in an effort to rid themselves of memories of the vacuous sloganeering.

The painful realization of their phantasmagoric excess in being duped into voting for a Marxist even now causes them to speak in hushed tones.

They agonize over being so humiliated and have spent thousands on psychological counseling.

It is a this stage where I particularly enjoy conducting a psy-op to push them over the edge.

All it takes is a toldyaso or two.
