Open thread: Virginia; Update: McDonnell wins

A weird situation: It’s the biggest bellwether of the night given that it was the crown jewel in The One’s swing-state sweep last year, and yet … the result’s been a foregone conclusion for weeks. The only question is how big of a blowout it’ll be. Double digits seems assured, but dare we hope for 15 points, say?

You can follow the results here. With 12 percent of the votes in, McDonnell leads by 27; we should get a call before 8 p.m. ET, I’d think. One interesting footnote to this race in case you haven’t followed it is that Deeds did his level best to paint the Republican as a hard-right culture warrior while McDonnell, wisely, ran on jobs. Just one more bit of evidence that fiscal conservatism, not social conservatism, is the GOP’s path going forward.

Update: Three minutes before 8 p.m. and the AP says lights out. Now we wait for the final margin.

Blowback

Wow look at Leiutenant Governor and Attorney General. Virgina swung hard towards the GOP. It is not even close. I doubt you hear the other that from the talking heads tomorrow…

Again, the websites of the top 3 repubs in VA all has social con positions equaly on display with the fiscal con side. If anything, I’d say they were slightly squishy on the fiscal side wanting to support education, only more efficiently.

OK guys. Tell me about a good drink to have tonight.

Just one word of caution: I’m usually a non-booze drinker.

newton on November 3, 2009 at 8:19 PM

To make a “Tennesee Mud;”

1 shot of Jack Daniels
1 shot of Amaretto
(on the rocks, or straight up.)

The sweet, smooth Amaretto cuts the harsh out of the Jack Daniels….

(Warning – no more than 5!)

Ok then you need to start off light. Take a bottle of Jameson and remove the cap. Pour four fingers in a glass and just down it. After a couple of those you can omit the glass.

Oldnuke on November 3, 2009 at 8:59 PM

McDonnell better get to work darn fast showing how conservative principles can help the people of Virginia so that these Commies can get swept out of Congress over the next few years…if it’s really not too late that is.

Same goes for Christie in New Jersey.

But, the makeup of these state legislatures will be very important due to checks and balances.

Dr. ZhivBlago on November 3, 2009 at 8:59 PM

It’s hard to win an election as a Democrat in Virginia when you can’t run against Bush.

Domination. I rock my “I Voted” sticker proudly today.

Currently, McDonnell has a 22% lead.

uknowmorethanme on November 3, 2009 at 9:00 PM

The only good Democrat is a Democrat who just got trounced in an election.

Seeya Deeds! Well fought.

Virginia has always had a Republican dominated legislature. Now we need to take over the state Senate and we are golden. Virginia is one of the few states that has weathered the economic meltdown simply because we never lost our conservative edge even throughout Dem governors and US Reps/Senators.

Politico is reporting that Republicans have swept the statewide office elections. There is still no reporting on the House of Delegates, but the statewide elections should indicate good news for Republicans there as well.

Deeds essentially won Northern VA, but only by small margins – around 52% to 48%. McDonnell won overwhelmingly elsewhere.

This Republican victory essentially assures the state will not address the phony gun-show loophole issue effectively for 4 more years. And it puts pro-2A Cucinelli one step closer to the Governor’s mansion.

Only half the precincts have reported in Fairfax. Arlington is a small county so win or lose there is nothing. The other counties in NOVA are Loudon, Prince William, and I guess you could count Stafford and Spotsylvania, and Faquier. Of course, don’t forget the City of Alexandria and the City of Fairfax.

I live in Reston, in deepest Democratic Fairfax County. I have a network of conservative friends.

Conservatives here are highly outnumbered, and we lost our local Delegate fight. We fought, but were outnumbered by the horde. Still got around 40% to pull the conservative levers.

Right here with you. Cannon ran an inspired campaign against career politician Plum. Plum spent no money, did not even campaign really…and still ends up winning (around 60%-40%). It’s all about the “D” in Reston – get in line and follow.

Northern Virginia is like a different state than the rest of the Commonwealth, i.e., blue, rich and elitist. But even in my district (Chantilly), it looks like LeMunyon, the Republican, is winning over the incumbent Democrat, Caputo. Anyway, I look forward to laughing at my neighbors as they pull up the Creigh Deeds signs from their lawns.

I talk to my liberal co-workers and neighbors. Having data, good arguments, history on my side, and even the blessing of science to buttress my arguments does not work. I posted before about the last time I joked about Biden with someone I thought was a friend. Almost got into a fist fight.
My lib co-workers think I’m a out-of-touch conservative dinosaur. If they only knew how much I soften my true beliefs, they would flee in terror. Leftist — the new barbarians.
My answer is to move. Looking to leave Reston in 2011.
