The stupid party

New York Republicans got a rock in their trick-or-treat bags over the Halloween weekend, as Dede Scozzafava ripped off her million-dollar Republican mask and revealed herself to be a Democrat. It was never a very good disguise, but every previous attempt to peer beneath it was punished with stern lectures from Newt Gingrich and the rest of the party establishment. The bags of contributor money Republicans handed to the Scozzafava campaign would have been more usefully spent hiring detectives to trail ACORN operatives, and keep Democrat voter fraud down to manageable levels.
The Scozzafava campaign is the latest dreadful mistake from a party establishment enchanted by the mirage of the perfect moderate candidate. For Republican voters, it seems like every winter is the winter of their discontent. Many of the GOP’s boneheaded mistakes come from exactly the same source as the Democrats’ boneheaded mistakes: the tendency to believe the media action line about themselves. This produces arrogance in the Democrats, while the Republicans are like awkward, lovestruck teenagers – terrified the slightest bit of confident self-expression will blow their chances with the cute moderate in the pink sweater seated beside them in homeroom class. They suffer beneath the same irony that crushes every awkward teenager, since confident self-expression is exactly what is needed to connect with the object of their affections… assuming they’re not obsessing over someone they never had a chance with anyway.
Establishment mouthpieces trying to rationalize the Scozzafava debacle as a tactical maneuver, designed to win a liberal district by running a moderate candidate, can save their breath. The success of Doug Hoffman’s insurgent candidacy blows that argument out of the water. Even if he suffers a narrow loss on Tuesday, Hoffman has certainly proven himself competitive. Just imagine what he could have done with, oh, say about $900,000 in Republican party funding!
As it stands, Hoffman has already crushed one of the Democrats in the race, and stands poised to claim victory over the other - and he did it with the help of all the conservative hobgoblins lurking within liberalism’s nightmare closet. While Newt Gingrich was droning through the third hour of his Power Point presentation, explaining why running the Card Check-supporting wife of a union thug was a brilliant political maneuver, Sarah Palin roared up in her 4×4 and shouted the obvious truth: voting for actual conservatives is the only way to clear away the Obama malaise.
Every district presents different political challenges, and there are places where both parties are compelled to run candidates who deviate from their core philosophy. The degree of deviance is the issue… particularly for the Republicans, whose core philosophy runs counter to the collectivist momentum of the past century. The Democrats certainly have problems with their mavericks, but usually only when they attempt to implement the most extreme policies, such as trapping America in the nightmare of state-run medicine. As long as the growth of the State bubbles along at Clinton levels, the “Blue Dog” Democrats are content to sit quietly on their porches, ignoring the Republicans waiting for them to bark.
Meanwhile, the Republicans keep running “moderates” who prove to be very useful to the Democrats… which keeps the growth of the State bubbling along at Bush levels. The radical nature of the current Administration makes the idea of “moderate” compromise laughable. What’s the moderate position on freedom-crushing trillion-dollar health care and environmentalist legislation? They’re okay, as long as the Democrats pinky-swear to keep the cost under $800 billion? That’s the kind of promise no politician could keep, even if it was made in earnest. A moderate Republican is someone who lives in a state of perpetual surprise as he ponders the monthly bills for nanny-state government. What’s the point of electing people who are guaranteed to spend the rest of their political careers complaining about how they’ve been played for fools?
Too much of the Republicans’ “Stupid Party” strategy is based on the mechanics of getting people with little elephants on their campaign signs elected. They view the election as the conclusion of a contest, when in fact it’s only the beginning. A successful Republican Party doesn’t have to be ideologically rigid, but it should insist on candidates who possess an intellectual foundation of conservative theory, and the ability to explain it at least as well as the thousands of people posting comments on conservative blogs.
Republican voters would be well-advised to ignore the people who engineered the Scozzafava debacle, and listen for the sound of Sarah Palin’s monster truck instead. America needs conservatives more than it needs Republicans. Both the party, and the country, benefit when they are one and the same. Next Halloween, just to be on the safe side, we should test the blood of every “moderate” Republican with a hot wire and a petri dish, just to make sure we don’t have another DIABLO on our hands.

“The stupid party” is right. When the Republican leadership–and you know who you are–is evidently too stupid to fully capitalize on the anger manifested at the Tea Parties and townhall meetings, they don’t deserve political support. Had they made that ready-made gift their own instead of watching in dumbfounded amazement, this ObamaCare/PelosiCare stuff would be dead now. I can tell you this, they’d best be recruiting better candidates for 2010 than they did in NY-23 in 2009 if they want to win.

My bet is his parishioners had him figured out and he decided to ‘get out of Dodge’ and use his oratory skills in a slimier career field.
Never trust a guy with two first names(Ron Paul) nor a guy that gives up the pulpit to be a politician.

That’s what Steele should have fixed. He’s totally failed the essential task of re-establishing the integrity of the Party. He simply cannot do that without lopping heads.
America and conservatives honor merit and accomplishment. That we still have to endure John Boehner moaning his regrets re: Scozzafava is proof that the Republican Party is unworthy of our support.
We need a little Old Time Religion; without the shedding of blood there can be no redemption.

The modern Conservative movement really needs to come up with a new “Contract with America” or a manifesto a la Mark Levin’s superb book. Not demanding down the line ideological purity on each and every conceivable issue, but at least outlining a set of ten or fewer core principles to define Conservatism as a philosophy and help it to grow as a political movement.
It would also provide a means to gauge the sincerity of Republican mouthpieces when they start throwing the word around come election time, but don’t have a clue what it really means.

nelsonknows on November 3, 2009 at 4:00 AM
Huh? They don’t get it even now!
The GOP will spend hundreds of thousands of your money (if you’re stupid enough to send some to them) on Crist in Florida to fight off Rubio. Plus there are probably hundreds of local races where good young conservatives will be squeezed out so some two-faced insider can get a shot.
NY-23 is just a skirmish in a long war that’s going to stretch all the way to 2012.

Too funny and too true! I’ve always said that Republicans need someone like Michelle Malkin or Ann Coulter to teach them how to own the media (those two do it about as well as I’ve seen — every Republican in Congress need their training class). Going back to the analogy, Richie needs a Fonze to arrive and teach them how to man up.

I’m am not convinced this is a true statement any longer. The GOP has become successive more progressive since I came of political age in 1972. Ronald Reagan was an anomaly during this period.

When a person has any amount of ‘power’ for a long enough period, that person will always, ALWAYS, develop a craving for more power. ‘Power corrupts…’ To think that any representative, no matter how conservative and ‘pure at heart,’ could forever represent the best interests of their constituents is naive. The current GOP establishment (and the Dems as well) make this obviously clear. Any true Conservative and Constitutional revival must include a focus on term limits, or else we’ll have this same discussion in another decade, just like we had it several decades ago. The tough, maybe impossible, task ahead is to elect representatives who will vote for term limits and convince current representatives to vote for the end of their political career.

As Brad Thor says…it’s Judgement Day.
I live in a Virginia district represented in the state assembly by Tom Rust…another “moderate” Republican. He’s being challenged by Stevens Miller, a carpetbagging Democrat who is getting my vote. It’s time to not only press state GOPs into running conservative candidates, but to refuse to play their game and let them take your vote for granted.
I’m voting to get rid of Rust and get a better candidate in place for the next cycle. The days of me settling for a watered-down Democrat because the VA GOP is too spineless to make a real case for conservatism are over.

The thing about all this as I see it is that conservatives are simply what used to called good, sensible, country loving, common sense Americans. The genuine extremists, that is the rabid environmentalists, the PC fanatics , the ACORN’s, lefty media et al, of this country have somehow convinced Mr. and Mrs. Average Amercan that their fringe policies are the norm and we are out of the loop and wrong. How on earth could we have fallen for that? but it seems we did, me included. Thankfully something or some combination of things jerked us back into reality. We , John Q. Public, are not only the real Americans in the old fashioned sense, it’s us who have quietly preserved the basic values this country was built on. And, apparently, we did it in spite of pressures because inherently and instinctively we know it’s right. Hurray for conservatives–Hurray! Hurray!

We just blew $900K on someone who just endorsed the Democrat!!!
The GOP should be spending at least $900k investigating ACORN/SEIU in New Jersey.
Every $2 for advertising should be matched with $1 for investigations. ACORN/SEIU/WFP can spend $50k and get 5,000 fake votes!

Wasn’t part of the Constitution itself a compromise between the Virginia plan and the New Jersey plan. The job of bringing 13 autonomous state governments together couldn’t have happened by each of them refusing to make trade-offs. Slavery was an issue that many felt strongly about but had to be put off for another 70 years.

Doctor Zero, our newest re-Founding Father. It is great to know this country still has intelligent citizens. At times I think we are surrounded by zombies. Super, terrific article Doctor Zero. We are going to need you terribly these next 3 years!
Something else the “Stupid Party” wants to focus in on is this deal about the appearance or attractiveness of a candidate. What I mean is the ripping of Bobby Jindal after his rebuttal to The Manchild, and recent comments I have read in the blogs regarding Hoffman’s inability to speak well. I get it that in these days of marketing and slick packaging the “Stupid Party” does need to run a Presidential candidate that can match up with The Manchild’s star power appearance. Another Bob Dole/John McCain we do not need. However, we the voters need to start teaching the general ignorant populous how to listen to the words coming out of a candidate’s mouth. Obama is who we thought he was because of the words coming out of his mouth. His radicalness is not a surprise to most at HotAir because we were immune from the Hollywood marketing of Teh Won. Many voters and little Billy O’Reilly do not get it that the words of a candidate DO indicate what is in their heart and soul, and therefore an indicator of how they will govern. (O’Reilly last night ripping Rush for suggesting The Manchild is wrecking the economy on purpose. UGH!)
Sarah in her 4X4 versus Newt and the ability to use Power Point is another clear example of what worries me about how most in the “Stupid Party” do not have the ability to cut through the packaging and realize one of these individuals has the heart of Margaret Thatcher or a Lion, and the other a heart of a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day balloon.
I heard last night on Fox via some pundit that McDonnell, if he wins VA, will most certainly be on the short list for a VP spot in the 2012 elections. WHAT? The man has not been governor of VA yet, but all because they THINK he ran a good campaign he should be a VP candidate! In the immortal words of little old lady in the Wendy’s commercial, “Where’s the beef?” Where is the substance? We need substance, or lots of 4X4’s over Power Point presentations from the “Stupid Party”.
freeus on November 3, 2009 at 11:32 AM
Have you considered the other possibility?
Someone put s-fava in. Someone pumped national party money to s-fava.
Perhaps these someones like s-fava’s politics. Perhaps some political manipulators are not naively running moderates with the hopes they will be of some use later. Perhaps these folk agree with the politics of s-fava more than the politics of a Hoffman, and truly want to load a bunch of s-fava’s into office.
As the ‘naive’ strategy of nominating moderate candidates against the will of the base escalates, there grows more evidence the machine itself has a moderate agenda
To get a bunch of unwashed conservatives to vote for the your moderate candidate is difficult. It could be useful to tell them you are doing it only because your hands are tied, and although you dislike the candidate, you have to run him to get the independents and half a loaf is better than none
In other words, a double shell game

These are all very good points, doc.
I would like to be a fly on the wall in the RNC headquarters after tonight’s elections.
The nascent libertarian-conservative movement, which has been quite apparent in the blogosphere, is, apparently, news to the schmucks running the GOP.
The parade has passed them by while they sat trying to sell the same old spin.
Note to GOP – you have betrayed us and our principles too many times for us to ever trust you again.
You need to get used to having conservative challengers to incumbent do-nothing elected officials.
This is no longer the party of Tom Delay and Dennis Hastert.
Note to DNC – this will happen to you, too, with the same Dennis Kucinich-loving liberals who helped Obama move past HRC in the primaries.
They will run ideological left wing candidates who reject your “centrist” corprate-funded programs and ideas.
You eat from the same trough as the GOP and you will suffer the same electoral consequences.
It may be morning in America when we awake tomorrow.
