I'm all for Ford, but doubtful that this profit will continue in Q4 without the Cash for Clunkers boondoggle.

Let the UAW strike against Ford. Unemployment is so bad in rust-belt regions that I have no doubt whatsoever that the company could replace the strikers and fire them outright.

Eat sh!t and die, UAW...!

O’Bambi will be seething with rage at this news.
honsy on November 2, 2009 at 9:35 AM

Well, I should say at the outset that <strike>Skip Gates is a friend</strike> Chrysler and GM are my homies, so I may be a little biased here. I don't know all the facts.

What's been reported though is that <strike>the guy forgot his keys, jimmied his way to get into the house</strike> Ford forgot its place and scammed its way to a profit. There was a report called in to the <strike>police station</strike> Whine House that there might be a <strike>burglary</strike> failure to spread wealth around taking place. So far, so good, right? I mean, if I was trying to <strike>jigger into</strike> take over -- well, I guess this is my <strike>house</strike> economy now, so...

(LAUGHTER)

... it probably wouldn't happen. But let's say <strike>my old house in Chicago</strike> one-sixth of the economy.

(LAUGHTER)

Here, I'd get <strike>shot</strike> undying, ceaseless adoration.

(LAUGHTER)

But so far, so good. They're -- they're reporting. <strike>The police are doing what they should</strike> Ford is dissing me. There's a <strike>call</strike> profit. They <strike>go investigate what happens</strike> are proud of this outcome.

My understanding is, at that point, <strike>Professor Gates is already in his house</strike> Chrysler and GM had opted in and became my homies. <strike>The police officer comes in</strike> Ford has opted out. I'm sure there's some <strike>exchange of words</strike> reversal of market share. But my understanding is, is that <strike>Professor Gates</strike> the UAW then <strike>shows his I.D.</strike> voted down a new contract with Ford to show that <strike>this is his house</strike> they're next and, at that point, <strike>he gets arrested for disorderly conduct, charges which are later dropped</strike> the UAW is left holding the bag with my homies and they're looking for more bailouts and economic justice.

Now, I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role <strike>race</strike> filthy unjust profiteering played in that. But I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the <strike>Cambridge police</strike> Ford acted stupidly in <strike>arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home</strike> attaining a profit when my two homies failed to; and, number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there's a long history in this country of <strike>African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately</strike> private enterprises failing to hand over their loot willingly. That's just a fact.

Ford posts a profit in Q3
The efforts of its management to steer a course away from taxpayer bailouts has generated a lot of goodwill — perhaps not in Detroit itself or with the unions, but with consumers angry at the corporate welfare policies of this administration and its predecessor.

Take That Paulson/Geitner/Bernanke/Obama/Bush/Greenspan/Cox/Raines/Pilosi/Frank et.al. !!!

You are all frauds and have proven your irrelevance. Now go away forever!!

I do hope Ford can keep their profits strictly for growth, debt retirement, cash reserves and shareholders. Meaning, since the unions didn't want to re-negotiate, screw any idea of profit sharing.

Not all of us are particularly pro-corporation. There are, in fact, some ideals at play.

It's easier to address the ideas that you apply to the labels ... but not terribly productive. Which is why American politics are how they are, coincidentally.

Ford's an interesting case. It briefly dipped its toes into financial services and then got out. At one time it was one of the biggest subprime mortgage lenders in the business. But it got out at the right time and got back to the basics of running a car company. GM didn't. It went almost all-in on GMAC, and during the boom it used big profits from GMAC to mask poor management and hideous losses in its car business. Only when GMAC started losing money did GM really get serious about turning its car business around, and by then it was too late.

There's a lesson there that should be learned by all big manufacturers. Stick to your knitting and do not chase profits in other sectors that are far afield from your basic business.

I hope you all know that Obama and his cronies will have to destroy Ford. They simply can not allow a non-government competitor to succeed. And now Ford's UAW employees are all stockholders in GM. How healthy is that?

Don't think they'll do it right now, but Ford could follow the lead of Boeing. Boeing just decided to expand their 787 production in Charleston, SC rather than in WA state- just after the Charleston employees decertified their union.

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20091029-723919.html

Maybe Ford could buy the Saturn plant, and move some production to TN....

Don't think it'll happen, but it's nice to dream sometimes!

Don’t think they’ll do it right now, but Ford could follow the lead of Boeing. Boeing just decided to expand their 787 production in Charleston, SC rather than in WA state- just after the Charleston employees decertified their union.

Not so fast ... Cash for clunkers did the deed, Ford is still roughly $2.5 billion in the hole for the year. Cork that champagne.

Grow Fins comes out for small government as though we support subsidies... proves once again he has no idea what conservatism is all about.

People who want a new car that makes it all the way home from the dealership without breaking down?

NoDonkey on November 2, 2009 at 10:09 AM

Since Government Motors shut down a lot of their dealerships, the remaining dealers are further away from where people live.

If Ford is being pressured by the UAW, they should move their plants to right-to-work states.

Way to go, Ford!

Apparently, in the 1930's, Ford's compliance in not lowering the wages of its employees to market level (at the request of Hoover and FDR) was instrumental in causing and prolonging the Great Depression.

Drop the unions, Ford.

[...] Ford did what GM and Chrysler lacked the fortitude to do. And it paid off. They ignored Geithner, Bernanke, Bamm-Bamm, Pelosi, and the rest of the mathematically deficient idiots in DC. They were innovative (the new Taurus, for example), they took -0- bailout dollars, thus keeping their investors’ money sound and safe from additional interest charges, and they let it be known that they had done these things. Ford figured out what the rest of the so-called geniuses listed above never will. Gummint will save no one. Let the market do its thing–we consumers do know better than gummint, dad gummint!
With this $997million in the bank, now is the time to face/allow/ provoke a UAW strike. Do this before the UAW and Obama can “fix” things.

Get the strike going and 60 or 90 days later start firing the union workers and shutting the plants. Open new ones in the South.

A direct government bailout of the UAW is impossible. The money doesn’t exist, and it would be political suicide; the public won’t stand for it.

A UAW-free Ford might cause Toyota, Honda and Nissan to follow suit. The de-worming of American labor will be underway.
