Corzine fading in New Jersey?
posted at 8:48 am on November 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
After Jon Corzine appeared to pull back into the race for his re-election to the governor’s chair in New Jersey, Barack Obama poured on the support to help push him over the top. According to the final PPP poll in New Jersey, it didn’t work. Corzine has fallen off the pace and now trails outside the margin of error in the Garden State, with Chris Christie pulling away in the final week:
Chris Christie leads Jon Corzine 47-41 in PPP’s final poll of the New Jersey Governor’s race, with Chris Daggett at 11%.
Corzine had pulled to within a point of Christie on our poll three weeks ago after trailing by as many as 14 points over the summer, but his momentum has stalled since then and Christie’s built his lead back up to 4 points last week and now 6.
Christie’s advantage is due largely to his support from independents and because he has Republicans more unified around him than the Democrats are around Corzine. Christie leads Corzine 52-29 with indies, as Daggett’s support with that group has declined to 16%. Christie is getting 82% of Republicans to Corzine’s 72% of Democrats.
What about Daggett’s role as a spoiler? Right now, he’s spoiling Corzine more than Christie. Corzine has a nine-point edge among Daggett voters as a second choice, which indicates that the third-party bid has begun working in favor of the Republicans. Unfortunately for Corzine, though, that gap isn’t enough to put him back in the lead if significant numbers of Daggett voters abandon the third-party choice in tomorrow’s election.
Bear in mind that pollsters make a big effort to get the final polls before an election correct. They get judged on their accuracy based on the votes in the election, after all. A big miss makes them less credible than their competition, which means less business later. Sample problems suddenly disappear and biases get ironed out, although with PPP that has not been much of a problem anyway.
Jim Geraghty still advises caution:
At this point, I can see reaons why Christie will win (voters know Corzine, don’t like him, and don’t expect better in his term) and why Corzine will win (a barrage of negative advertising has convinced them Christie wouldn’t improve things).
Just FYI, this poll splits 44 percent Democrat, 36 percent Republican, 20 percent independent/other.
An eight-point lead for Democrats in New Jersey may be a little thin, but it’s not out of range. We’ll certainly see tomorrow.
Quinnipiac also has Christie surging and Corzine fading, although they have it in the margin of error. They also have Daggett hurting Corzine more than Christie now:
In the see-saw New Jersey Governor’s race, Republican challenger Christopher Christie has 42 percent to Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine’s 40 points, with 12 percent for independent candidate Christopher Daggett, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Six percent remain undecided.
This compares to a 43 – 38 percent Gov. Corzine lead, with 13 percent for Daggett, in an October 28 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.
Among Daggett supporters, 38 percent say they might change their mind: 39 percent say Corzine is their second choice, while 29 percent say Christie is number two.
If Corzine loses, the White House will try to spin it as a state issue with no impact on national events. That will be much more difficult to sell in New Jersey than in Virginia, where Creigh Deeds has kept Obama at arms’ length. Corzine has practically had the White House running his campaign over the last month, and Obama talking more than Corzine on the stump. A Corzine loss would have to be seen as a rejection of Obama by a state that has been a safe haven for Democrats for many years.

The Democrats in NJ are just as naive or ignorant as the Democrats in Chicago (where I live). If they vote Corzine in, they deserve more of what they’ve already gotten.

I sure hope someone, or many someones are keeping a close eye on ACORN and friends. That state is dirty dirty dirty and this race is still too close to call.

Christie is a RINO like Christine Todd Witless so it is no big deal if he wins and may hurt by making Republicans look bad. Thanks again Sean Vanity.
bill30097 on November 2, 2009 at 9:46 AM
Yup. Dems feel entitled to the NJ governorship, and Corzine isn’t going to go down easily after spending millions of his own money on it. You almost have to account for a few % points of corruption up there.
If Corzine wins, the VA result will be largely ignored by the MSM, and the lesson they’ll take away from it is that Obama won it for him. If Owens wins in NY-23, then of course it’ll be the GOP civil war, we cut off our nose to spite our face, we’re a small tent party, blah blah blah. So, really hoping for a good night.

As noted by Haiku Guy and many others, there is very widespread perception of the risk of vote fraud in this election. If the Republicans ever come to national power again, I truly hope that as their very top legislative priority, they will enact a Voters’ Rights Act for the modern age, targeting the corrupt machine strongholds with Federal Marshals and whoever else it takes to squash the fraud once and for all.

Democrats have been stealing votes during their entire existence, it’s pretty much part of their party platform and a proud part of their history.
And we don’t have a press that cares to call them on it, so all we can do is to make jokes about the theiving criminal Democrats who “lead” us.

I hope this happens! At very least NJ isn’t voting Democrat because the Obama mystic over powers their common sense! This is a very good sign of clay feet.
petunia on November 2, 2009 at 10:00 AM
Eh you’re probably right on some level but overall my perception is people are just fed the hell up with the property taxes, overall cost of living, more and more liberal policies and Corzine in general.
I’d call it more a sign of Obama’s impotence despite a concerted effort.
Dash on November 2, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Oh yeah. ACORN isn’t going to let this happen are they. Well at least maybe we can document it and turn a spotlight on the fraud machine that is the Democratic Party. This is New Jersey after all. You really can’t expect a clean election in Democratic territory.

I think people see Goldman Sachs as the new Haliburton. Corzine is perceived as a crony, and I think turnout among the Dems will be weak at best. NJ voters are stupid (it seems), but I can’t imagine there’s much enthusiasm for Corzine with the economy being so bad and with unemployment and taxes being so high. It seems the pollsters are already factoring in dead voters and Pookie, unless NJ voters really are just stupid.

Bob McDonnell is doing some last minute campaign air stops at Charlottesville, VA Beach etc today. From what I understand, Christie started running ads showing video of Corzine telling the people to hold him repsonsible if he does a bad job. If this is the case, Christie should be running these commercials right up until the deadline when he can no longer run commercials. But I am not holding my breath when it comes to Jersey, I can see Corzine still winning.
Should Christie win, NJ desperately needs him to govern with conservative economic policies. That is the first, last, and middle problem for Jersey. They have got to stop the bleeding of people moving out and then make the state attractable to people moving back.

You want more good news? Check out the “strongly disapprove” versus approve. The index there is now only +6 points. That means there are only 6% less people in this country who are pissed about Obama than there are people in this country who could take or leave him.
The Rasmussen “strongly” categories are significant because they indicate the people who actually are motivated to *do* something for or against Obama. The “favorable” and “unfavorable” are Scott’s “meh”. categories.

That’s because the filthy lying coward would not help Deeds and would probably erode his support even more. Deeds simply ran a bad campaign- people are interested in taxes and transportation and Deeds stuck with attacks about McDonnell’s thesis paper and support of pro-life issues.
I still think that Corzine is going to pull it out in New Jersey because the filthy lying coward has devoted too much time and attention to have Corzine fail.

bill,
You have no idea the amount of arrogance of Corzine has for the ‘little people’. My wife works at an urban ER that was used by Corzine to have a hang-nail looked at. He is ‘too important’ to be bothered by seeing his own physician, he has to use an ER to have it seen. Not only did he abuse the system, he berated the medical staff and demanded to be seen immediately.
You bet your ass that the sooner we dump this chump the better the state will be, on we could dump the rest of the chumps in the state-house.

Works for me!
Since we’re creating new units of measure, I’m a big proponent of calling the amount of self-employment tax Timmah! failed to/”forgot to” pay the “Geithner”. 1 Geithner = $34,023 and would be a proper unit to use for reporting amounts of unreported or undisclosed income by tax cheats.
Thus, for example, Charlie Rangel failed to disclose 2.2 Geithners of rental income from his villa in the Dominican Republic and 38.2 Geithners of outside income on financial-disclosure forms filed between 2002 and 2006.

I lived in Bergen County from 1992-2007 when I escaped the People’s Republic. I saw this whole scenario play out in 1993 when NJ dumped the chump Flim Flam Florio with Christine Toad Witless. She proceeded to spend 8 years running the NJGOP into the ground and squandering any favorable image of the GOP there was. I learned the only real difference between the NJ Dem establishment and the NJ GOP establishment is that the Dems “tax & spend” while the GOP “borrows & spends”. Then in 1995 I saw the NJ GOP establishment of which Christie was and is an integral part stab him in the back against McGreevey. The “moderates” want us to co-operate when their guy is up but they turn their back when our guy is up. As shown in NY-23 they can go to Hell. Speaking of which, Sean Vanity deserves special contempt for his using his radio show to campaign for RINO Christie against an established conservative in the GOP primary. He refused to have the conservative on except to debate the RINO Christie while having Christie on several times before the primary. A lot of my friends in NJ say that made the difference in a low turnout primary. Yes, Corzine is a chump, part of the Goldman Sachs “loot America” crowd. But no more lesser of 2 evils. Christie’s running mate is a radical pro-abortion feminist like Corzine’s. Just the lesser of 2 evils.

Corzine’s loss will not stop the fiscal trainwreck here in NJ.
His loss, however, will get the attention of every Dumocrat across this nation, that even in a deep Blue State as is NJ, an incumbent Dumocrat can lose his job.

Would be great if Corzine lost. But I’ve heard this theme before that New Jersey is “in play” for a Republican candidate only to be rudely awakened by reality.
New Jersey is not only a blue state but it is also a gullible state where simpletons are used to being lied to by perpetually dishonest Democratic liberal politicians. When these crooks get into trouble they shriek that their opponents are even more dishonest than they are and produce a manufactured scandal or two. They couple smear tactics with promises of reform. “WE REALLY REALLY MEAN IT this time when we say no new taxes…” and the foolish electorate has always believed them.
Consequently I hope for the best but fear for the worst.

I think that rise in the polls for Corzine was actually his death knell. Republicans who thought that Christie had it in the bag were willing to support Daggett, because they didn’t really like Christie.
But tell them that Corzine might win, and they decide to hold their noses and vote for Christie.
My guess is that the vast number of Daggett’s voters will be people who don’t like Corzine, but just can’t bring themselves to vote for a Republican.
