Corzine fading in New Jersey?

After Jon Corzine appeared to pull back into the race for his re-election to the governor’s chair in New Jersey, Barack Obama poured on the support to help push him over the top. According to the final PPP poll in New Jersey, it didn’t work. Corzine has fallen off the pace and now trails outside the margin of error in the Garden State, with Chris Christie pulling away in the final week:
Chris Christie leads Jon Corzine 47-41 in PPP’s final poll of the New Jersey Governor’s race, with Chris Daggett at 11%.
Corzine had pulled to within a point of Christie on our poll three weeks ago after trailing by as many as 14 points over the summer, but his momentum has stalled since then and Christie’s built his lead back up to 4 points last week and now 6.
Christie’s advantage is due largely to his support from independents and because he has Republicans more unified around him than the Democrats are around Corzine. Christie leads Corzine 52-29 with indies, as Daggett’s support with that group has declined to 16%. Christie is getting 82% of Republicans to Corzine’s 72% of Democrats.
What about Daggett’s role as a spoiler? Right now, he’s spoiling Corzine more than Christie. Corzine has a nine-point edge among Daggett voters as a second choice, which indicates that the third-party bid has begun working in favor of the Republicans. Unfortunately for Corzine, though, that gap isn’t enough to put him back in the lead if significant numbers of Daggett voters abandon the third-party choice in tomorrow’s election.
Bear in mind that pollsters make a big effort to get the final polls before an election correct. They get judged on their accuracy based on the votes in the election, after all. A big miss makes them less credible than their competition, which means less business later. Sample problems suddenly disappear and biases get ironed out, although with PPP that has not been much of a problem anyway.
Jim Geraghty still advises caution:
At this point, I can see reaons why Christie will win (voters know Corzine, don’t like him, and don’t expect better in his term) and why Corzine will win (a barrage of negative advertising has convinced them Christie wouldn’t improve things).
Just FYI, this poll splits 44 percent Democrat, 36 percent Republican, 20 percent independent/other.
An eight-point lead for Democrats in New Jersey may be a little thin, but it’s not out of range. We’ll certainly see tomorrow.
Quinnipiac also has Christie surging and Corzine fading, although they have it in the margin of error. They also have Daggett hurting Corzine more than Christie now:
In the see-saw New Jersey Governor’s race, Republican challenger Christopher Christie has 42 percent to Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine’s 40 points, with 12 percent for independent candidate Christopher Daggett, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Six percent remain undecided.
This compares to a 43 – 38 percent Gov. Corzine lead, with 13 percent for Daggett, in an October 28 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.
Among Daggett supporters, 38 percent say they might change their mind: 39 percent say Corzine is their second choice, while 29 percent say Christie is number two.
If Corzine loses, the White House will try to spin it as a state issue with no impact on national events. That will be much more difficult to sell in New Jersey than in Virginia, where Creigh Deeds has kept Obama at arms’ length. Corzine has practically had the White House running his campaign over the last month, and Obama talking more than Corzine on the stump. A Corzine loss would have to be seen as a rejection of Obama by a state that has been a safe haven for Democrats for many years.

If Hoffman, Christie and McDonnell all win tomorrow I will have new faith in this once great country. I’m still not convinced NJ will happen. The amount of fraud there is so big that Christie would have to win by 6 or 7% to win by 1%. I hope it happens, I just don’t see it. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong.

A Christie election would be sweet indeed. As for Daggett’s efforts, a little honesty would go a long way, especially if Palin’s name is used in vain.
Lessons abound if conservatives sweeps the major races being covered in 2009.

I’ve been pretty burned out on politics for about a month or two. These races are invigorating.
Any thoughts on what Obama could do (or, by extension, democrats) to change public opinion? Or, are these races really, really, oh-God-please, a trend which will snowball into 2010?

Another topic, we focus too much on the Governor races, while ignoring the state legislative branch, which is really just as if not more important. Will the GOP seize the NJ house/senate, or will Christie get stuck with gridlock right out of the gate?

And yes, I am convinced the GOP has been infiltrated by the enemy over the years specifically to undermine its efforts and ruin it. When McDonnell wins and if Christie wins, I may actually watch the Gibbs press conference for once.
It will be good to see this jackass wiping egg off his face and it will be preview of what spin the White House will put on the fact that the Democrats are going to get pasted in the 2010 elections.
Democrats getting thrown bodily out of office by enraged voters, it doesn’t get any better than that.

It’s not just the winning of these two big state elections right now that matters. Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell are legitimate GOP stars in the making and will have a big impact on elections for years to come. With Frank Lautenberg barely breathing, there is also a decent chance Christie may even get to make a Senate appointment, or run himself against Lautenberg and beat him. He is a great guy and conservatives are going to love him as Governor.
Neither Christie nor McDonnell can be caricatured by the state-run media as snarling rightwing nutjobs either. Their election blasts a huge hole in the Obama/Soros strategy of painting the Republican Party into a far-right corner. Both have run campaigns based almost exclusively on taxes and job creation, which is the winning combination for all Republicans going forward.
I expect what we will see next is a transparent attempt by the White House to create some kind of feud between Christie/McDonnell and Sarah Palin.

Christie may win or lose, but I want to personally thank the President and the RNC for single-handedly reviving the conservative movement in America.

I happen to think it is also a pretty big deal when the sitting Chairman of the Democratic National Committee manages to lose his home state election by double digits. The media have willfully refused to report on this aspect of the Virginia election, which is amazing. It’s like everyone thinks Howard Dean is still DNC Chairman, but he isn’t. Tim Kaine is, and he was Barack Obama’s handpicked Chairman. So this is another FAIL for Obama as a political leder.

This is not only a trend—it will be the 2010 surge that will put Obama and the Democrat Party on their heals, while the MSM makes their feeble attempt to claim our party is divided. Even the Washington Times let this one slip in this morning:
Don’t worry folks, Kara Roland, (who wrote this article), is getting ripped up in comments. But the SPIN has just begun, and the media may have to figure it out like a Charlie Gibson Acorn story—hello, Mr. Corzine, the red courtesy phone line is breaking up—call back on Wednesday when you need a new job.

Christie is going to win. He has run an excellent, positive campaign, as has McDonnell. Something else that is going to be learned from these elections is that voters really are tired of attack-dog campaigns. The Democrats have become the party of the angry, snarling pols in this election. Jon Corzine has not said a single word in favor of himself in this campaign. His attacks on Christie brought down Christie’s favorable rating a fair amount, but in the end they did nothing but make Corzine look like a rich, angry loser.

NJ is a great state to live in – I’ve lived here for almost 28 years. I’ve also lived in California & Florida. NJ is just fantastic, but if you consider that on a $850,000.00 home on 12 acres I’m paying upwards of 30k/year in property taxes………I could feasibly purchase another home in an equally beautiful part of Pennsylvania and have annual mortgage costs that are less than my property taxes in NJ? It’s that mentallity that is the catalyst for the mass exit from NJ! My tax dollars are going to Democratic machine of more teachers, larger government and TAX TAX TAX. It is the anger that hard working NJ residents feel when they see their paychecks going to the liberal agenda – and guess what, we are simply leaving. First NY City….now NJ.
The liberal agenda is like a pack of locusts on middle class New Jersey – we either have to leave or you’ll kill us.
