AP pre-spin: These elections mean nothing and the GOP is doomed

posted at 4:48 pm on November 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

The Republican’s up 18 points in a swing state that went for Obama last year by six. The incumbent Democratic governor of New Jersey is in the fight of his life despite outspending his opponent three to one and having the president stump for him personally. Gallup’s generic ballot, at the moment, looks eerily similar to how it looked before the GOP tidal wave in 1994.

All meaningless.

So even if political winds start blowing harder behind them and even if they can capitalize on Democratic missteps, Republicans still will have a long way to go over the next year because of their party’s own fundamental problems — divisions over the path forward, the lack of a national leader and a shrinking base in a changing nation.

The GOP would overcome none of those hurdles should Republican Bob McDonnell win the Virginia governor’s race, Chris Christie emerge victorious in the New Jersey governor’s contest, or conservative Doug Hoffman triumph in a hotly contested special congressional election in upstate New York.

In fact, 2009 seems to have underscored what may be the biggest impediment for Republicans — the war within their base…

[W]ith Democrats in control, the onus is on the GOP to get its act together. George W. Bush, the president many Republicans came to see as an election-day albatross, is gone, but the party troubles born under him linger.

That’s as much as I’ll quote; follow the link for details about how Limbaugh and Beck have become “the angry white face of the party.” Ace’s commentary on media bias is always sharper than mine and this is no exception: His whole post is worth reading, especially the part about the media’s concern-trolling over a GOP civil war while Blue Dogs and progressives are having a knife fight over the public option, but this bit is sufficient for quoting.

Imagine if the Democrats were clearly ahead in these races. Try to imagine the AP’s “analysis” reading: Victories in these races do not prove Obama’s popularity or ability to swing races, and do nothing to erase the enormous obstacles he faces in passing health care reform or cap and trade legislation.

You would never see that. If that were the case, it would, in fact, be a referendum on Obama, about how wicked-awesome he is.

In fact, should the Democrats win, that is precisely what AP will say tomorrow.

So they will, and don’t be surprised if it comes packaged in a nudge to centrists that they’re now free and clear to take the plunge on a “robust” public option because Corzine won a bluer-than-blue state by two points or whatever. Since we’re doing pre-spin, though, make a mental note of these campaign mailers from Deeds and Corzine that Jim Geraghty’s collected so that you’re prepared for the inevitable “the results say nothing about Obama” gyroscope tomorrow night. Exit question: Does anyone know the total number of campaign events that The One has done for Deeds? I can’t find it on Google and I’m curious to learn just how much Hopenchange magic was poured into a looming 18-point blowout.

Blowback

Not many, actually. I think he did one or two near the beginning (when it was still close), then just the one down in VA Beach/Norfolk area.

OTOH, Deeds has tried to tie himself to Obama.

Abby Adams on November 2, 2009 at 4:54 PM

Who is the AP trying to convince here?

The GOP base might be shrinking, but the conservative base grows by leaps and bounds. Of course, since the AP does not bother to check up on us, it hasn’t noticed. The joys of not being in the media eye are boundless and should be used to advantage. As long as we are regarded as the non-entity fringe, we are free to grow and prosper right beneath their self satisfied noses.

jeanie on November 2, 2009 at 4:57 PM

… a shrinking base in a changing nation.

Like I said in the headline… AP is either inherently daft, or they’re simply playing stupid.

Republican Party ID is indeed down. Yes, there are more Democrats than Republicans.

But that’s because people are tired of the party. There are, in fact, more Conservatives than liberals or democrats. And there is a healthy population of Conservatives who refuse to identify with the Republican Party. Saying Republicans are down, without addressing that–gee, Conservatives seem to be at an all time high–is again… either inherently daft, or they’re just playing stupid.

Delusion is a staple of the Enemy Party. Opposition to Obama? Racist.

The People leaning Republican? Doesn’t mean a thing until it gets big. Then the voters are racist AND ignorant.

Dem woman losing? Voters are sexist and ignorant.

At the very least–2. He did one in McLean, VA and the one in Norfolk or VA Beach just a few days ago. Ol’ Biden was s’posed to be in Charlottesville to campaign with deeds >3wks ago, but canceled on him when the writing was really showing up on the wall. ace tomato on November 2, 2009 at 5:02 PM

If Corzine loses, I expect PelosiCare is dead. However, expect the Dems to shift focus and pull out all stops to get something else done: ‘Comprehensive immigration reform’ (amnesty). The only important part will be the dates involved; the amnesty will be granterd in time for all the illegals to be register to vote in November, 2010. But not in time for the primary; wouldn’t want all those unwashed drones actually picking the Dems’ nominees.

President Obama has one election to his credit (although, it was pretty significant!). Let’s wait to see what happens in 2010, 2012, and perhaps 2014 & 2016 before we measure elctoral effectiveness. I seem to recall the President Clinton didn’t have very impressive coattails in 94, 96 (even though he won) 98 or 2000.

The President’s efforts for Deeds might have been better focused if the mailers and campaign ads just read:

/LARGE TYPEFACE ON> PRESIDENT OBAMA
/small typeface on> Choice: Deeds /small typeface off>
/LARGE TYPEFACE ON> FOR GOVERNOR!

Obama definitely did at least one campaign stop for Deeds. And he mistakenly called him Tim Kaine.

As for Virginia not mattering to Obama, suuuuuuure. If he loses Virginia, he’ll lose North Carolina. And Indiana can’t be far behind. And Florida and Ohio are always tossups. That’s 86 electoral votes right there(although the Census could change that). He’d barely win reelection if he lost those states and managed to hold on to all the others.

What will be key is seeing how far down the food chain the Democrats get blown out. Do they lose only the governor’s seat in VA or do they lose local, municipal, county and other state offices they have held for years? THAT is the telling part of this story. Losing an assembly or mayoral seat the Democrats may have held for decades would be a better indication of the depth of the public contempt for the Democrats at this point.

Ann Coulter had it nailed when she labeled the Democrat party as the ‘media party’.The MSM and the contemporary Dem party are parts of the same organism. (Or, during the Clinton Administration, orgasm).

The AP and other outlets are simply the PR/propaganda arm of the party. They always strongly tended that way, but since the Watergate era,the ‘make a difference’ and ‘change the world’ types have put the pedal-to-the metal on leftward media bias until it’s become a farce.

Look how easily the media roaches easily scurry back and forth from media jobs to Dem administrations and vice-versa.

In one sense Jarrett’s remark about the GOP leadership is close to accurate. They too, are tacitly dismissing their conservatives as the lunatic fringe. Of course, while analyzing the GOP she is failing to notice that large numbers of her own Party are becoming dis-affected. For this time, in this place in these circumstances the old rules seem to be falling away. The leadership of both parties are out of touch with We the People.

That’s as much as I’ll quote; follow the link for details about how Limbaugh and Beck have become “the angry white face of the party.”

Limbaugh should begin interviewing conservative blacks on his show–every day of the week. Line up and start dispelling this nonsense. I don’t care if he has to start with only a sliver of this demographic. Too many blacks remain tied to the Democratic Party because they suffer from Stockholm syndrome. You can’t do anything about black Democratic politicians–they serve as the overseers for the Democratic Party plantation. Middle class blacks need to hear conservative voice of their own color in order to communicate that it’s okay to escape the Democratic Party. And Limbaugh can give black conservatives a big megaphone for a bit of time each day.

Realizing now that they have been had and experiencing extreme voters remorse many are beginning to pay attention to what is going on in Washington. Three wins for conservatives this week will have elected officials rocked back on their heels. Those officials concerned about retaining their current employment will not likely be part of any of the Ponzi schemes being foisted upon our nation.

The GOP would overcome none of those hurdles should Republican Bob McDonnell win the Virginia governor’s race, Chris Christie emerge victorious in the New Jersey governor’s contest, or conservative Doug Hoffman triumph in a hotly contested special congressional election in upstate New York.

Actually, if Hoffman, Christie, and McDonnell all win going away tomorrow — as seems increasingly likely — it would seem to indicate that the “hurdles” that the AssPress uses as premise are just a bunch of crap.

Jaibones on November 2, 2009 at 5:38 PM

I can remember when Reagan won and there were media people reminding us all that only 26% of the population considered themselves Republicans, so the victory did not count or something.

The truth is both parties have internal problems, but right now I think there is more pressure on the Democrats to overcome those divisions than there is on the Republicans..and the fact that there is no national leader for the GOP might actually help them, it denies the AP and their ilk a target.

I don’t care what anyone says about Virginia. I had chance to go to Williamsburg, with a stop at Fredericksburg.

It was almost a religious experience to walk the streets Jefferson and the other Founders walked, and to eat in Washington’s favorite restaurant. I couldn’t get a Colonial meal but THAT means nothing.

I stood in the (rebuilt) House of Burgesses, where Thomas Paine spoke such glorious everlasting words to liberty. The tour guide let me and my daughter read from cards those words of wisdom and liberty and, to my joy, my baby spoke with conviction.

What happens in VA, no matter what the Enemy Party declares or spins, will ever devalue what was spoken centuries ago by Virginians.

End of story.

I watched the interview Chris Wallace did with Limbaugh on Fox News Sunday..and I agree with something Rush said, whatever his problems with McCain, there are things that must be weighed, and on a balance there is no way a Republican leader is going to come up with the kind of stuff we have seen out of Obama. They may not be as conservative as some of us want, but by and large, they are not as scary, not even close. There might be a couple of exceptions to the rules, but those folks are not ever going to be in a leadership position.

Terrye on November 2, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Actually, make sure that this article is correctly attributed to Liz Sidoti and not just “the AP”. Hold HER feet to the fire on this article personally. There is a reason there are bylines.

First of all, she actually works for the San Francisco Chronicle. The Chronicle is an AP member so they can put their name on the stuff but she is a San Francisco Chronicle employee.

One thing people can do to hold these “journalist’s” feet to the fire is to register at a place like newscred.com and if you think an article is biased, give the journalist a “discredit” on the article. They really do pay attention to stuff like that, believe me, I was married to a journalist for 10 years.

But actually, Sidoti is no friend to the left. She has hammered Obama a couple of times and gave McCain donuts so Media Matters thinks she is a Republican hack and an Obama “smearer”.

Look up and learn about the journalists themselves who write these stories rather than simply pegging “AP” with them. AP carries all sorts of content from their member papers and most of that content is not “AP” content, it is local content they pick up on their wire service.

Like they’re not already? At least on the national level.

Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll send the addy to my kids who believe(d) in Obama but are now having second thoughts. I could use the added ammo.

The Corzine/Christie election is already being stolen by Acorn affiliates.

I’m preemptively spinning this as another Acorn/Cloward-Piven Strategy stolen election.

I love the smell of media desperation the evening before an election. It smells like . . . victory.

And final results from the New Jersey race…………

Christmas.

Nah, they’ll find enough Corzine votes in a car trunk somewhere long before then.

Yeah, that attitude doesn’t get at the whole story, unfortunately. AP can carry ANY story from any of their member papers and call the “journalist” an AP journalist because their paper is an AP paper. My point is not to confuse member paper employees with AP employees. There is a difference but AP often goes to lengths to blur that line.

Just because the byline says “AP National Political Writer” doesn’t mean the writer is an AP employee. Sometimes it means “Someone who writes articles for a podunk paper that we snag for national publication when we feel like it”.

ddrintn on November 2, 2009 at 6:08 PM

Yup.

The state has received a flood of 180,000 absentee ballot requests. On some 3,000 forms the signature doesn’t match the one on file with county clerks. Yet citing concerns that voters would be disenfranchised, Democratic Party lawyer Paul Josephson wrote New Jersey’s secretary of state asking her “to instruct County Clerks not to deny applications on the basis of signature comparison alone.”

Elsewhere, an investigation is being conducted into a report that people wearing Acorn T-shirts entered an East Orange hospital near Newark carrying blank absentee ballots and left with completed ballots. New Jersey law allows anyone to pick up an absentee ballot for someone else — these are called messenger ballots.

After repeated election-related scandals, Acorn has become toxic for many candidates who once relied on the group. But Acorn’s longtime allies, the Service Employee International Union and New York’s Working Families Party, have both moved into New Jersey. Peter Colavito, Acorn’s former political director in New York and a board member of the Working Families Party, is now the political director of SEIU Local 32BJ, which is heavily involved in New Jersey’s election.

Paging Breitbart! Get the pimp and ho out to do some undercover exposing, STAT!

I read a few comments on the page at Amazon for Palin’s up-and-coming book (to be released in about two weeks), and, what was the funniest among the comments (though that was not what they were going for, humor, I am sure) was a stream of complaints (seriously) by a Leftist about how “Palin is destroying the GOP”.

I laughed aloud…the Liberal writing numerous comments on Palin’s book’s page, decrying the destruction of the GOP that the Leftist could not care less about, trying so intensely to show the world how much they were concerned.
