Scozzafava endorses Democrat in NY-23

posted at 4:15 pm on November 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Doesn’t this prove the point conservatives had been making about Dede Scozzafava all along?

One day after she suspended her own campaign and declined to publicly endorse either of her opponents, Republican Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava has formally announced her support for Democratic candidate Bill Owens. …

This isn’t a huge surprise. According to the Watertown Times, Scozzafava, who is angry about the indignities she suffered at the hands of Conservative nominee Doug Hoffman, was quietly encouraging her supporters yesterday to support Owens.

In addition, her labor leader husband, Ron McDougall, issued a late-night endorsement of Owens via a statement released by the AFL -CIO, which signaled the start of a labor wave moving from Scozzafava’s camp to Owens’ side. This could prove critical when it comes to the GOTV effort.

Uh, sure, as if that 19% or so that backed Scozzafava in the race included a “labor wave”.  The union voters were not going to back the Republican in this race, outside of McDougall and a few of his buddies.  They’re already behind Owens, even with the Card Check-supporting Scozzafava in the race.  Why wouldn’t they have already wanted to give Nancy Pelosi another caucus vote?

There are two ways of looking at this.  Either Scozzafava doesn’t mind throwing Republicans under the bus for a little dog-in-the-manger revenge, or she’s a lot closer in policy to the Democrat than the conservative candidate.  Neither of those commends Scozzafava, nor the county party leaders who handpicked her to replace John McHugh.  In fact, it makes it clear that conservatives were right all along to point out Scozzafava’s unsuitability for the endorsement — and should result in replacing the GOP bosses in NY-23 who bungled it.

I’m merely suggesting that Dede was on the verge of a real good gig and got screwed by the party she gave her life to.

She didn’t get screwed by the party. She screwed it up herself. Big time. I’d recommend she switch parties while the switching is good. Otherwise her primary election next year might be…ummm…entertaining.

The poll that counted last year was that 95% of Americans were going to get a tax cut. And that King Unicorn post-racial post-partisan was going to lead us to Utopia. That’s sort of hit the rocks of reality.

The idiot trolls don’t understand how this is going to affect the Blue Dogs, who aren’t going to be able to pretend that they’re right of anything, as they have stood behind this whole insane leftist push to socialsim/fascism. The masks will be removed, and nothing scares the left more than light.

But this will all be decided before the 2010 elections, anyway. It all comes down to what passes this Congress. If they ram any of their un-American nation-killing legislation through, like their health care suicide bomb, this nation is going to erupt and secession will be the word of the day. Nothing scares the lefties more than being left with no one to leech off of but their own.

The GOP can win but it cant win by adopting the Democratic party agenda.

To have a vibrant GOP we need to build an infrastructure. Instead we back marketeers and message makers who read polls and base ideas on them.

The GOP can win with its message. It just has to find a way to get the message out past the party ledership that is power driven and the MSM which is in bed with the democratic party.

William Amos on November 1, 2009 at 4:37 PM

You must be a clown if you think we actually want the House next year. We simply want to send the DINO’s packing and take back the Bush Districts in prep for 2012. The worst thing that could happen to us is for us to take back the House. Then the Regime Propagandists in the State Run Media would start to lay all of Obama’s catastrophic a$$-clownery at the feet of Speaker John Boehner, and he’s enough of a Beltway GOP’er to fall for the Obamist scam.

Nope. You neo-socialists get to run the whole show. The American people get to see the five spiral crash called “Democrats In Power”. They will see what happens when people who really think they are the smartest folks in any room try to run their country into the ground.

We will make absolutely sure that there can be no one but the Democratic Party to blame for the ongoing trainwreck in Washington (even Obama’s lapdog columnists are starting to get uncomfortable with all the incessant Bush-bashing). We will be just strong enough in the House and Senate to stop the NeoSocialist Eurotrash Personality Cultist in the White House from permanently damaging the country until Palin is elected in a Reagan-scale landslide.

victor82 on November 1, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Now that’s a plan I can believe in!

But what makes you think they’re not already blaming the lack of leftist progress on the GOP now? They’re already doing that.

Chaz706 on November 1, 2009 at 4:37 PM

Look, it’s really quite simple:

If you are pro-choice, in favor a gay marriage, favor “card check”, and favor “cap and trade”, you are not a Republican.

If you are a politician with those positions you are not a “Moderate Republican”, or a “Liberal Republican”, or even a “Moderate Democrat.” You are a hard core left-wing Democrat.

If you are a voter with those positions, and you want to vote for the Republican candidate, great, we’re happy to have your vote. But if you’re a politician with all those positions, you are not welcome.

Because a politician with those positions will, on any and every important vote, support the Democrats. As Dede has just demonstrated rather conclusively.

Enoxo, are there any links to back up what you’ve said here? It would be interesting in particular to understand the rules used to get the effects of “rammed her through”. How can the main guy override the committee? If so, why was there even a vote?

I think the conversation here would be considerably enhanced were someone to provide the particulars.

Further confirmation cliquish club that is our two party system. Theey don’t so much mind if they trade inter-prty dominance back and forth, so long as no one else breaks in.

The confict of interest between party exclusivity and actual constituent representation cannot be any clearer that Dede’s latest acknowledged subservience to that system over her ostensibly professed ideology. Republicans have demonstrated likewise reluctance to challence the status quo by their deafening silence of the constituionality of the bailouts, the deprivation of property rights of shareholders in the auto take over, and the potntial forced purchase of health insurance against one’s will. I could go on, but on HA I know I’m preaching to the chior.

As destructive as it may be in the short term, ther two party monopoly needs to be dismantled, while anything left of our constituion and the counrty it has so valiantly served, still remains.

This display by NY-23′s GOP could not have come at any better time, nor in any better setting: 1) a relatively meaningless race; 2) a full year ahead of the most critical elections in the history of the republic; and 3) where the conservative faithful get to see the depths of ideological corruption of the GOP leadership.

If their job is truly to get Republicans elected, the GOP leadership HAS TO become more conservative, because as this election showed, the conservative faithful aren’t really in the mood to hold their noses and vote for just anybody with an “R” by their name. Republican candidates without conservative support are not going to win, it’s as simple as that. GOP leadership is now in a position to help unite the party–but they’re going to have to listen to the conservative wing to do it.

And they kinda need to do it in the next 3 months. Hmmm. . .who will answer the challenge?

Its shows that the RNCC did a poll and was driving the pick for her.

GOP officials: We won’t abandon Dede

It’s all a geographic play,” the GOP official explained. “There is a path to victory.”

The official also noted that, as a Republican, Scozzafava would have a far larger base of support to tap into. As of April 1, voter registration in the district was 43 percent Republican, 31 percent Democrat and just 1 percent Conservative Party.

Whether Hoffman wins or not doesn’t really matter. Had he not entered the race a democrat was going to win either way. This way he brought attention to the fact that there was no conservative in that race and got everyone’s attention. He or another conservative can run in 2010 when it will really matter. The democrats have the votes in congress anyway – this one doesn’t really matter. But if Hoffman’s campaign got conservatives to rally, then it was successful.

Endorsing the democrat proves that she wasn’t a Republican to begin with. The Conservatives were right to fight against her. ACORN and the Working Family Party endorsements were HUGE clues that she was a wolf in sheeps clothing. She supported TARP, Porkulous, Cap and Tax, Card Check and Pelosi’s Government take over of healthcare. What is the difference between her and a democrat? Nothing.
The problem is that the media and the rest of the liberal loonies are already using this to say , See, no moderates allowed in the Republican Party. Right to lifers and anti-gays only. Her social views were NOT the problem but the dems will never admit that. I am an example of a pro-life fiscal conservative who could care less what gays do or don’t do but I can recognize a DIABLO when I see one.

simplesimon on November 1, 2009 at 4:46 PM

The vichy republicans got exposed.

the_nile on November 1, 2009 at 4:48 PM

After seeing her stunning picture, all I could think of is:

PETTY IN PINK.

honsy on November 1, 2009 at 4:48 PM

[Scruntsafavabeans]…also ripped the mask off…David Drier, the idiot who recently called her the party standard bearer…

james23 on November 1, 2009 at 4:34 PM

I have never understood the love affair Hewitt and Prager have been having with this jerk. He always sounds smug and self-satisfied on the radio, but those guys cannot get enough of him.

Kensington on November 1, 2009 at 4:48 PM

Only if the maverick goes…Graham tends to suckle this time of year.

HornetSting on November 1, 2009 at 4:47 PM

Ewww… McCain (papa) has suckled-on nipples?

MeatHeadinCA on November 1, 2009 at 4:48 PM

I am spitting nails I am so mad right now. Mad at the GOP in general. Mad at the party bosses, especially in Jefferson County and St. Lawrence County but across the district. Mad at the NRCC. Mad at Pete Sessions. Mad at Michael Steele.

HOW MANY DAMN TIMES DID WE TELL THEM THIS WAS A BAD IDEA?

They spent almost a million dollars on this woman that their largely conservative base donated to them with the expectation that they would use it to advance their principles. We’ve been hoodwinked.

Not one red cent. Not until heads roll for this absolute outrage. Not until Dede Scozzafava is kicked out of the GOP caucus in Albany. This is ridiculous.

Red Cloud on November 1, 2009 at 4:49 PM

I still can’t see how this hurts Hoffman or our chances.

Hoffman got the support because she was to the left of a RINO.

She would have been another Snowe/Collins.

Good riddance

gophergirl on November 1, 2009 at 4:46 PM

She would have been worse than a Snowe/Collins. I’m serious, she was more than a RINO, she was left of a RINO.

deidre on November 1, 2009 at 4:49 PM

Agree Agree!

MeatHeadinCA on November 1, 2009 at 4:49 PM

To every moron saying Hoffman is a carpetbagger: Districts are redrawn ever 10 years to benefit the party in power. There is no such thing as a permanent district.

Speedwagon82 on November 1, 2009 at 4:47 PM

Just say Hillary.

Boehner getting the message ?

Boehner: ‘Political rebellion’ under way

William Amos on November 1, 2009 at 4:49 PM

Be a Dem……

Hening on November 1, 2009 at 4:50 PM

Simple you do know you are the classic troll right? You must be proud. You are ignorant and vacuous. Truly sad. Just another loser product of some lousy public school. Too bad you freaks cannot afford the schools that Obama’s kids use eh?

CWforFreedom on November 1, 2009 at 4:50 PM

PPP is still doing polling and has been all day.

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2009/11/more-ny-23-mess.html

-In a three way contest Doug Hoffman leads Bill Owens by 19 points. In a two way contest Hoffman leads Owens by 15 points. So the Dede Scozzafava withdrawal and endorsement will probably tighten the race some but not nearly enough.

kcarpenter on November 1, 2009 at 4:50 PM

Hey, has anyone seen me lady Ann?

Maybe she’s still up at Fort Drum campaigning for Scuzzy?

… and terrorizing recruits…

CWforFreedom on November 1, 2009 at 4:52 PM

But please don’t come out!

MeatHeadinCA on November 1, 2009 at 4:52 PM

Simple seriously are you really educated? If you are would you please share something that actually has some weight behind it. You really are childish and petty.

CWforFreedom on November 1, 2009 at 4:53 PM

This may be a real boost for Hoffman if he plays it right…he turned the light of conservative on, and the cockroaches ran for cover.
Or…”I am proud to have flushed out a closet liberal…she tried to sneak her way in, lying to her constituents, and once in she was going to deceive them.
Or…”I want to thank the true conservatives, the true fiscal conservatives who forced her to show her hand…many were fooled, but you weren’t, and I wasn’t, no more lies”.
There are so many ways to positively campaign with this…

right2bright on November 1, 2009 at 4:53 PM

Who ever thought culling the Rino’s would be so fun?

fourdeucer on November 1, 2009 at 4:53 PM

King Unicorn

ddrintn on November 1, 2009 at 4:32 PM

I’m sorry, but that is just the best. You should come up with a tee shirt or something, because I’d buy it!

Niere on November 1, 2009 at 4:54 PM

Perfect.

This should help land her a couple of nights on MSNBC for the next couple of days….just long enough for them to use her to help dump on the GOP….then, they will drop her off deep in the woods with a pair of strap on antlers in the middle of hunting season……

tatersalad on November 1, 2009 at 4:54 PM

So… when does the Watertown Daily Times ask Dede Scozzafava to clarify what she meant during the campaign when she pledged to be a “vote for John Boehner” and that a “vote for Hoffman is a vote for Nancy Pelosi?”

Did she not mean it back then?

Scum. This woman is scum. Her true colors are showing – for a while yesterday, I thought I was wrong, but I was right all along: Dede is for Dede.

Archimedes on November 1, 2009 at 4:38 PM

I’d be all in favor of the third party you’re describing if it didn’t take ten years to achieve it. This parallels the democrats attempting to dismantle the health care system when it needs tweeking at best. It would be easier to re-define the GOP, than to abandon it and start over. The engine works….but it needs new carbs and some headers….

Rovin on November 1, 2009 at 4:55 PM

Just say Hillary.

HornetSting on November 1, 2009 at 4:49 PM

“Carpetbagger” always struck me as a term southerners used against Yankees that happened to be in the south.

Shrillary was just another dummycrat going to roost in a sea of dummycrats. The clintonistas chose NY on a calculated agenda.
