Quotes of the day

posted at 9:30 pm on November 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

“For some time now Frank Rich, Sam Tanenhaus and countless others (including David Frum) have been arguing that the GOP is a rump party and the only way for it to survive is for it to embrace me-too Republicanism of one flavor or another. The story of all three major races (VA, NJ, and NY-23) is that this conventional wisdom was incandescently wrong and ill-advised… The GOP is an unapologetically conservative party, providing a choice not an echo, and — horror of horrors — it’s working.”

***
“The more rightists who win G.O.P. primaries, the greater the Democrats’ prospects next year. But the electoral math is less interesting than the pathology of this movement. Its antecedent can be found in the early 1960s, when radical-right hysteria carried some of the same traits we’re seeing now: seething rage, fear of minorities, maniacal contempt for government, and a Freudian tendency to mimic the excesses of political foes. Writing in 1964 of that era’s equivalent to today’s tea party cells, the historian Richard Hofstadter observed that the John Birch Society’s ‘ruthless prosecution’ of its own ideological war often mimicked the tactics of its Communist enemies.

“The same could be said of Beck, Palin and their acolytes. Though they constantly liken the president to various totalitarian dictators, it is they who are re-enacting Stalinism in full purge mode.”

***
“But other conservatives say the problem in both the New York contest and hampering Republicans more broadly is the tendency of GOP establishment leaders in Washington to get behind moderate candidates out of fear a purist conservative can’t win a general election.

“‘Hmmm, I thought the Era of Reagan was over?’ conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh wrote in an e-mail to POLITICO. ‘Who was it that said that? Oh yeah, the smart people on our side who told us the only way we could win was with moderate-liberal candidates like Scozzafava.’…

“‘I think it will empower tea party activists’ to look for moderate scalps in other districts, fretted one senior GOP strategist with national campaign experience. ‘The question is, Will we go through a period in the party where a great purge begins?’ this strategist asked. ‘If it spreads into that, this will be a very bad day.’

***
“The truth is that some conservatives are as bloody-minded and intolerant of all dissent as the hard left is at the Daily Kos. A majority political party requires a far more diverse coalition than the audience for your average right-wing blogger or talk show host. Some of those voices prefer having Democrats in power because it drives up their own ratings.

“Democrats did themselves no favors by driving Joe Lieberman out of their party, and conservatives will do their cause no good by forcing GOP candidates in Illinois, California and Connecticut to sound like Tom DeLay. If conservatives now revolt against every GOP candidate who disagrees with them on trade, immigration or abortion, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will keep their majorities for a very long time.”

***
WALLACE: Lucille Golman sent this question, “Did you vote for John McCain in the 2008 presidential election?”

RUSH: I did.

WALLACE: Really?

RUSH: Of course.

WALLACE: But you’ve been so critical of John McCain.

RUSH: Yes, but you weigh the two. I don’t think — there are a lot of people, Chris, that are saying there’s no difference in two parties. I know a lot of people think that, and they’re — and they really, really believe it.

But I don’t know of any Republican who would try to take over one-sixth of the U.S. economy. I don’t know one Republican who would put forth this — this irresponsible cap and trade bill. I don’t know one Republican who would actually do that as something he initiated.

Does Krugman really believe this?
Could a grown man seriously believe that opposition to nationalized health care stems from a “fear of minorities?”

billy on November 1, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Krugman, like most liberals, has no conception of the real mindset of a conservative. The Lefties’ view the Right is mythology that they cling to like we supposedly cling to our guns and Bibles. It’s the same tired stereotype that we’ve been tagged with for decades — pickup trucks, guns, no education, resistance to change, primitive superstitions, fear of other cultures, hatred for gays, blah blah blah. Lefties comfort themselves about how progressive they are by comparing their supposedly high level of evolution to this imaginary template.

They will never understand the truth about us. Most of us understand them perfectly.

What is the best way for the enemy to infiltrate their opponent? Look and act like the opponent. LOOK AT THE PERSON’S VOTING RECORD!!! I could tell you all day long what my affiliation is but as the old saying goes “ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS”…Can you only imagine how much better off we’d all be today if most folks had done that in early ’08??

He should be pushing this line HARD and OFTEN. “These people don’t care what party you belong to, they’re new to activism, they’re fed up with Big Government, and it’s our responsibility as Republican pols to win these people to our candidates. That’s what we’ll be doing for the next year. This new group of people who’ve rejected party labels and want action are our target for the next election cycle. The Democrats don’t want them and we’re going to work very hard to pick them up going forward.”

That should be the new RNC line. This isn’t a GOP civil war, this is a “political rebellion” sweeping American’s of all parties and of no party and we the GOP leaders are listening, hearing, and responding to this WIDESPREAD call for action. That should be the first thing every GOP politician says every time this issue is raised and they should return to it frequently through the rest of the interview.

Do those accommodations include a person who now supports her Democratic opponent?

GnuBreed on November 1, 2009 at 11:33 PM

Conservative Republicans win elections.

The left, i.e., the Democrat Party and the media, know this.

The left’s tactic is to do everything possible to get the weakest and most liberal Republican on the ticket.

Once their Republican “favorite” is on the ticket, they will relentlessly trash them- this sways the independents to vote for the Democrat and discourages Republicans from showing up to vote.

justltl on November 1, 2009 at 11:35 PM

It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Soroses of the world actually donate to the weak/liberal Republican candidates.

here’s a big part of our future: State Taxes/Public Pensions

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2009/11/024850.php

there was a CSPAN vid on a State Tax conference. If you like your wallet be very afraid

there’s big money, big unions after your money. CA is just one example…and Obama will no doubt bail them out (ie public employees) at your expense

The R’s must hit this hard..the VAT will just be the start. The Cap/Trade is a TAX generator. Obama is not worried about the deficits because he has plans…big plans with our money. Plenty of cover, the debt, the dollar, the chi-coms

VAT, Green taxes, spread the wealth (give it to the unions) etc.

I suspect the Estate tax will be next. Everything will be up for grabs, FICA tax, everything

Don’t be too comforted.

He has a small army of minons, backed by Leftist Think Tanks, to do all the heavy lifting for him.

All he need do is add his signature to the poison he’s feeding the Republic.

Which leaves him plenty of time for golf.

And photo ops.

With, or without caskets.

The Apologist on November 1, 2009 at 11:19 PM

I totally agree. Everyone who’s got it bad for “big government” is already active on the Left. The only people left to draw into politics are the people who’d really rather be left alone, but who can’t be because Obama and Co. need to mobilize the entire populace for their “glorious revolution”.

Yeah, I bet those grapes are sour, too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sour_grapes

Sour grapes is an expression originating from the Aesop Fable The Fox and the Grapes. It always refers to an unattainable goal and human reaction to it. It can mean to deny desire for the unattainable item. More often, it refers to the nature of humans to rationalize why they wouldn’t want it anyway. The phrase has come to be synonymous with bitterness in most modern contexts.

“The same could be said of Beck, Palin and their acolytes. Though they constantly liken the president to various totalitarian dictators

Well, he shares many traits and characteristics and fondnesses with them and anyone who has been paying attention would have to close the eyes of his mind and keep them shut with ever increasing force not to see them. That or share them themselves.

If conservatives now revolt against every GOP candidate who disagrees with them on trade, immigration or abortion, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will keep their majorities for a very long time.

What a strawman. The only “revolting”, if one wants to call it that, has been against the left wingers trying to masquerade as Republicans.

True_King on November 2, 2009 at 12:18 AM

Boy that Boehner clip was horrible. He let King say twice that the Republican “attacked” the Republican and then went on to say that the people doing the attacking broke Reagan’s 11th commandment. Well Scuzzy wasn’t attacked by Palin or Thompson or the CRG they endorsed Hoffman as the true Repulican \conservative and as we see with Scuzzy’s endorsement of the Democrat they were right, she isn’t a Repub as stated and certainly not a conservative. Boehner more often than not dissapoints.

Boehner was supposed to come out with a “game changing” plan today and didn’t . I wonder if he mislead Palin or pulled back at the last minute. If he did she won’t ever go out on a limb for him again… That would be a huge loss for him.

CCRWM on November 2, 2009 at 12:26 AM

Why do people ALWAYS get Reagan’s 11th Commandment wrong?

Reagan would rip a RINO to shred in, well, a New York minute!

He would protect CONSERVATIVE, not RINOs and DIABLOs (God I LOVE that new word, thanks Mark Steyn!)

Boehner just doesn’t get it. This is another guy I like, but man, if he doesn’t get it…..

Everyone should take a look at John Carter TX-31

gary4205 on November 2, 2009 at 12:28 AM

Because they either do not read and comprehend, or they are truly stupid and ignorant.

Kini on November 2, 2009 at 12:36 AM

Can’t say I’ve followed Boehner, but he seems to be doing a good job, may look a bit more closely at him.

Those other boneheads are making the usual mistake of assuming the public, particularly conservatives, are stupid racist homophobe etc. etc. Sure some of us are, some of any bunch is. We know in some districts we will have to compromise – but not NY23.

We are plenty smart enough to know that whistling after lost causes won’t do anybody any good. Are they? That’s the question. They assume we’re dumb, but we have watched them repeatedly produce RINOs, cutting off their own noses. If they get the message and straighten up their act, we’re ready to rumble. If they don’t, well, we’re still ready to rumble.
