Palin on Scozzafava’s withdrawal: Now we must unite

posted at 7:09 pm on October 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

Totally true, and precisely Gingrich’s point in endorsing Hoffman so quickly after Team Dede threw in the towel this morning. But there are a lot of Scozzafava supporters who’ll read this tomorrow and wonder why Palin wasn’t worried about unity when she dropped the hammer on their preferred candidate — who, by the way, was her party’s nominee — last week.

Which is a long way of saying that while the message is correct, Sarahcuda may not be the optimal messenger here. Remember, according to today’s Siena poll, Scozzafava voters approve of Obama to the tune of 64 percent. They didn’t poll Palin’s favorable rating, but given this bloc’s center-left tendencies, you can imagine how she’d fare among them.

A Time to Unite

I want to personally thank Republican Dede Scozzafava for acting so selflessly today in the NY District 23 race. Now it’s time to cross the finish line with Doug Hoffman so that he can get to work for District 23 and the rest of America.

With Congress poised to overhaul one-sixth of our economy with so-called health care “reform” (which is really a government takeover of health care) and with plans to enact a cap-and-tax bill just as our economy struggles to recover, Doug Hoffman will be a voice for fiscal responsibility and common sense in Washington.

We need candidates like Doug now more than ever. In these final days of the campaign, it’s vital that Doug continue to receive the enthusiastic support of those who want to bring common sense to Washington. Let’s help make it happen! You can help Doug by visiting his official website today and offering your support: https://www.doughoffmanforcongress.com/donate3.html

Hoffman, smartly, has been beating Owens over the head with Pelosi references in his attack ads. I wonder if Palin’s high-profile entry into this race is going to earn her the same treatment from Owens in any new ads he might be preparing to try to win over Scozzafava voters. Don’t think so? Check out this new over-the-top fundraising e-mail from James Carville on behalf of the DCCC. Exit quotation: “Help us raise $500,000 in response to Sarah Palin’s fundraising for the tea party nut jobs.”

I’m merely suggesting that, like any good politician, she waited to see which direction he parade was marching in before she ran to get in front of it.

Bleeds Blue on October 31, 2009 at 7:39 PM
You haven’t been paying much attention (Duh!).
Sarah Palin, in a ballsy move, led the parade and was the lone Conservative voice for quite a while supporting Hoffman.
The only other person came out for Hoffman before Palin was….(wait for it) Michele Bachmann, another fabulous Conservative Republican woman.

Jenfidel on October 31, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Oh, no. This race was a cause for the Right before Sarah took a position. In fact, I read about it here, first. No question that she had some influence, but it’s the bloggers who deserve kudos on this one. She was a follower.

I wonder if, given Palin’s high negatives in some circles, her high profile now becomes a negative, energizing the opposition. Maybe she should spend the last three days not crowing about her triumph, and just call a press conference Wednesday morning.

oldyeller on October 31, 2009 at 8:07 PM

Right. But beyond that, while Palin is reaching out to Republicans, she’s not changing her message overall. She’s not sacrificing her core principles in the name of pragmatism.

Exactly…and she’s found her way around the DC elites.

Palin has called for bipartianship the way the dems play the game. you win and then you get your enemies to cross over and kiss your ring.

In Roman times this use to be called accepting tribute. The winner accepts the loser’s bended knee and urges them to join the cause or orders their heads on a pike. Palin choose to offer THIS TIME for them to join the cause. If the elite DC GOP refuses to accept this offer NEXT TIME Palin may call for the heads to be mounted. Palin stands between the pitchforks for the GOP elite and they need to understand that.

Allah is just being an idiot now.

She’s got far more credibility with conservatives, but the point is, conservatives won’t decide this race in all likelihood. Centrist Scozzafava voters will.

Allahpundit on October 31, 2009 at 7:16 PM

No you are wrong. While the centrist voters are the last to make up their minds that does not mean they decide the election iot simple means they are the last to make up their minds. they have as less power then conservatives or the liberals since the the latest poll shows Owens at 35% and hoffman at 34% that means indepentents are only 31% Thus they have less power. If the conservatives stay home they decided the election if the liberals stay home they decide the elction. Allah confuses (like the DC GOP) power with time frame of decsion. simply being the last people to make up your mind does not make you powerful it makes you an afterthought. The race is won or lost first by getting out your base. If no base no win.

Steele, and I know him and like him personally, needs to learn to take risks, for therein — win or lose — is leadership.

Not stupid risks, of course, but those where there’s a reasonable chance to win.

In the end, your ink or pixels don’t really matter.

He’s got the job, the chairmanship of the RNC. I just wish he’d quit interviewing for it…

And frickin’ LEAD!

A message from Marco Rubio re the NY-23 contest:

Today’s developments in New York’s 23rd Congressional District should send an encouraging message to conservatives everywhere. It is not only right and necessary to stand up for our principles, it is also an appealing strategy to Americans yearning for less government and more fiscal restraint in Washington.

While there are still four grueling days of work left, it is clear candidates willing to stand up for conservative beliefs will not face a lonely journey on the campaign trail.

For conservatives who still don’t believe we can be true to our principles and win elections, I hope NY-23 serves as a wake-up call. It’s time for them to join their fellow Republicans on the front lines to deliver a victory on Tuesday.

Allahpundit on October 31, 2009 at 7:16 PM

With Congress poised to overhaul one-sixth of our economy with so-called health care “reform” (which is really a government takeover of health care) and with plans to enact a cap-and-tax bill just as our economy struggles to recover, Doug Hoffman will be a voice for fiscal responsibility and common sense in Washington.

We need candidates like Doug now more than ever.

She’s not being party specific. You probably don’t understand, but there are Dems that like Palin. She’s calling on all Americans to do the right thing and stop the government takeover.

Christie’s campaign crossed the state today. It was the last big push. I’ve heard Steele will be here in NJ on Monday, when most are working. Why stick with the race where he’s leading? That is the wimps way out. Sometimes I wonder which team Steele is on. I find it hard to believe that anyone could be that dumb.

Bleeds Blue on October 31, 2009 at 8:29 PM

Seems to me only (or ony) the ignorant do not understand what is meant by death panels. As for negatives, I think most everything associated with FINS comes out negative. I would say though , to borrow a great line, conservatives ” were going to need a bigger boat” as people will be trying to board.

bluemarlin on October 31, 2009 at 9:14 PM

If anything I think this statement about unity from Palin shows that she is more interested in reforming the GOP from within than going the third part route.

As for the GOP leadership regardless of whether Hoffman wins or losses I hope they realise that the base is not going to accept the same old politics and faux Conservative politicians as usual and that they need to start endorsing candidates that actually live up to values and principles that they profess to believe in and is representative of the core beliefs of the Republican Party.

Carville is a fool if he hasn’t recognized that there were plenty of Dems and Indies among those “tea party nut jobs.” The bottome line is that voters are fed up with big government gouging their paycheck and wallets and putting us into debt till kingdom come.

There will be no economic turnaround, much less growth, nor national security while the big government nanny staters hold the reins of power.

Remember when the Republican party nominated the moderate McCain and we conservatives were told to unite so we could win the election? Time for the moderates to follow their own advice…
