Gingrich endorses Hoffman

posted at 2:03 pm on October 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

You guys will dump on him as a johnny-come-lately, but (a) his support for Scozzafava was always strategic, driven more by stopping the Democrats next year than stopping Hoffman and (b) as her most prominent Republican supporter, this is the most important endorsement Hoffman could have right now aside from Scozzafava’s (or maybe Snowe’s or Collins’s). There isn’t much time left before the election and there are bound to be hurt feelings among Team Dede’s Republican loyalists, most of whom probably aren’t all that conservative anyway. To avoid my nightmare scenario of her voters breaking for the Democrat or staying home (and I’m not the only one who thinks it’s possible), every last Republican with an ounce of sway needs to push them to get over it ASAP. Here’s Gingrich setting the tone, no doubt with Romney and Huckabee soon to follow:

Gingrich made the announcement via Twitter shortly after the Republican Party nominee Scozzafava announced she was releasing supporters from their commitment to back her.

“Scozzafava dropping out leaves hoffman as only anti-tax anti-pelosi vote in ny 23 Every voter opposed to tax increases support doug hoffman,” Gingrich wrote on Twitter. (Tweet shown as it appeared)

Boehner, Cantor and NRCC chief Pete Sessions endorsed Hoffman shortly after Scozzafava’s announcement this morning and Steele quickly followed on behalf of the RNC. The big holdout for the moment is Scozzafava herself, who deserves some time to absorb the blow — but not much, given that the polls open in less than 72 hours and the Democrat, Bill Owens, is already making a play for her supporters by talking up how honorable she is.

Here’s video of her in the aftermath of the announcement. (post cont’d below)

A word to the wise: Don’t put much stock in that eyepopping PPP poll that’s going around. It’s based on a partial sample of just 200 interviews; with a number that small, the margin of error is probably in double digits. And a word to the wise for Rick Santorum, who’s hoping that third-party challenger Chris Daggett will take a hint here and drop out in New Jersey, freeing the way for Chris Christie: According to PPP, it ain’t Christie who’s the second choice for Daggett supporters.

Update: Hoffman reaches out:

“I’m certainly going to extend my best wishes to her,” says Hoffman. “The assemblywoman made a very difficult decision for the good of the Republican party. I hope to reach out to her by the end of the day and thank her for making this decision. It’s important for her supporters to know that I’m the conservative Republican in this race. We all need to make sure that we don’t have my Democratic opponent going to Washington.”…

“I will value a relationship with her, using the knowledge and experience she has to help me in representing this district,” says Hoffman. Working with Scozzafava, he adds, is akin to working with all Republicans to help forward conservative and fiscally-responsible policies. “In the last week, I’ve had many senior Republicans come to my aide and endorse me,” he says. “Over 25 congressional Republicans have helped and endorsed me, plus numerous presidential hopefuls.”

Note that, in “releasing” her supporters this morning, Scozzafava pointedly didn’t ask them to vote for the conservative.

Allah let me tell you why what you could have written in order for us to agree with you.

“You guys will dump on him as a johnny-come-lately for going on TV and piling on fellow conservatives for using their god given right to endorse with their principles.”

TendStl on October 31, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Now prove to us you are a man who can admit a mistake and campaign hard for Hoffman.

Otherwise you are just a fat spoiled boy man and deserve to be left behind as a hinderance to conservatism.

He never said you didn’t have a “god-given right” to vote your principles. What he said was that doing so might very well be counterproductive in terms of the precedent this sets for next year. He actually stated, flat out, in at least one of the interviews I posted that he wouldn’t have nominated Scozzafava if it had been up to him. That’s not a ringing endorsement of her or of RINOs.

Well if Dede’s supporters stay home it doesn’t REALLY hurt Hoffman. The pain would come if they broke for Owens. I suspect it may be a wash, some breaking each way or staying home.

The big concern is the undecideds at 9% in the Siena poll. I’m guessing the undecideds were split between people who couldn’t make up their mind between Scozzafava and one of the other candidates. I suspect the indecision was more split between Scozzafava and Hoffman, which would very much help Hoffman in this case (I don’t see bitter feeling among this group)

clement on October 31, 2009 at 3:05 PM

Big whoop, all the GOP johnny-come-latelies are joining on the bandwagon now that they don’t have to make a REAL decision between a pro-Union RINO and a small-government conservative.

Really good job there, taking the lead with the party, Steele.

I hope Hoffman wins, but every endorsement he picks up today can take it right back and shove it up their A$$. Its the people who endorsed him when the Republican candidate was still in the race that earn my praise.

Sorry Allah perhaps you misunderstood or I didn’t get my point across. His arrogance in his statements about “if those in Alaska think they know better”, and throwing up the “litmus test” strawman, is what I was getting at. He didn’t just simply stay quiet while the endorsements came, he publicly went on TV and denounced them and lied about them.

He lied, or didn’t do his homework on how Dede was chosen
He lied or stretched the truth about Hoffman living in the district. (hes lived there his whole life until it recently got gerrymandered and currently has his business in the district and has planned to move in if he wins.)

Update on PPP’s survey:

So this morning around 10 AM I started up our NY-23 poll and after a few hundred interviews it appeared that Doug Hoffman was now running away with it-unweighted numbers showed him at 45% to 26% for Bill Owens and 17% for Dede Scozzafava.

AP’s mention above was 200, this is a few hundred and the large lead is holding.

In fact, PPP predicts Hoff will win easily.

AP’s got great points about not throwing out the baby with the bathwater, ie dumping on Gingrich, who still has and will be a strong voice for conservatism. That said, the beltway boys may just very well get a wake-up call on Tuesday, especially if Hoffman wins and Corzine is defeated. The fire was built and the accelerant was applied. I believe Sarah Palin had everything to do with striking the match. It’s a long road ahead, and we need every asset available. Take a moment to look ahead before we tear apart a fragile beginning and build on it.

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House – a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, “We are not enemies, but friends… though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.” And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn – I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

“So far what he is talking about is what Afghans want to hear: reduce troops in Iraq, focus on Afghanistan and focus on Pakistan,” said Ashmat Ghani an influential tribal leader whose home province of Logar, just south of the capital, is suffering from growing instability by insurgent groups.
Mr. Ghani, who is a critic of Mr. Karzai’s weak leadership and opposes his running for another presidential term next year, also welcomed Mr. Obama’s recent criticism that the Afghan president has not come out of his bunker to lead efforts in reconstruction and building security institutions.
“We would welcome such a direct voice that would close up this problem,” he said.
Yet other Afghans interviewed were skeptical that a new American president would make much difference for them.
“What have we seen from the current president that we should expect anything from a future president,” said Abdul Wakil, 28, who runs a juice stall in the street near the heavily guarded United States embassy in central Kabul.
Mr. Obama’s trip is drawing considerable attention in the United States and abroad. It is being choreographed by his strategists to coincide with a new television advertisement intended to highlight his ideas on foreign policy and portray him as ready to serve as commander in chief, an issue on which, polls suggest, he is lagging behind Mr. McCain.

He actually stated, flat out, in at least one of the interviews I posted that he wouldn’t have nominated Scozzafava if it had been up to him. That’s not a ringing endorsement of her or of RINOs.
Allahpundit on October 31, 2009 at 2:56 PM

That is true, but Gingrich played it loose with the facts in his defense of her. His big talking point was that conservatism is about local control, and it isn’t right for people to helicopter into this district from D.C. to supplant the decisions of local voters. He then tried to spin Scozzafava as having been made the GOP Nominee through some kind of legitimate process–going so far as to claim that she was the top “vote getter” at four “votes.” He capped his argument off by saying that RINOs are necessary in “blue country” areas as a form of party outreach.

But none of that was true. The opposition to Scozzafava grew from the grassroots and NOT from some shadowy group of folks in the Beltway. Scozzafava did not win popular “votes”–she was hand picked by various GOP officials. And while NY-23 GOP reps tend not to be uber-conservative, they also aren’t commies. Scozzafava was an off-the-charts leftist and was a true RINO. Scozzafava might have been OK to run in Maine, Mass, or Rhode Island, but NOT NY-23.

I stand by my original prediction–Newt made his endorsement initially without the facts and, rather than admit he screwed up right away, doubled-down on his decision and tried to rationalize it. Big mistake, Newt.

/who cares anymore… This uprising cannot be contemplated by some idiots sitting around some corporate table, discussing who’s who in America. Fer crying out loud, WE THE PEOPLE are America.

Have you ever wanted to take a huge, gigantic dump in a toilet bowl and pretend its your congres?

Actually isn’t Beta still being used in niche areas while VHS is moving more and more into complete extinction?

I’ll ask Newt, just as soon as he’s done sorting his 8-tracks.

Dede seems like a decent person. She did the right thing. I wish her the best.

You really don’t know. What it means. To be a conservative. Do you?

Very funny, but wouldn`t the opposite be harder and much more productive, trying to find the ones who are not turds to represent us. For yout game I just have to link, as you said, to the Senate and House scrolls and I am done.

bluemarlin on October 31, 2009 at 4:05 PM

Newt’s endorsement probably hurts Hoffman more than it helps at this point. The guy is hopelessly behind the curve.

Heh

“Margaret Sanger seems like a decent person. She did the right thing. I wish her the best. ”

Just does not make much sense to me……. Is that really what you meant. Anyone who has read about Sanger knows what a truly horrid person she was, to me , same with anyone who accepts her award.

bluemarlin on October 31, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Wouldn’t Newt have been better off to say nothing and stick by his principle of local groups picking their candidate, which was his point. Now he just looks weak and unprincipled.

Jeff from WI on October 31, 2009 at 4:21 PM

In other news, Newt has picked the Pittsburgh Steelers to win Super Bowl XLIII.

Jim Treacher on October 31, 2009 at 3:04 PM

I can go along with that prediction.
