Breaking: Scozzafava quits after Siena poll; Update: Hoffman campaign asking for endorsement?
posted at 10:37 am on October 31, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Stacy McCain reports today that Dede Scozzafava has quit the special election in New York after an independent pollster found her badly trailing both Douglas Hoffman and Democrat Bob Owens. Reportedly, she tearfully withdrew and threw her support to Hoffman:
Just confirmed that Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava has quit the race. Speaking to supporters, Scozzafava broke down in tears.
UPDATE: Scozzafava, the hand-picked choice of the New York state GOP in the key 23rd District special election, reportedly will throw her support to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.
This has been confirmed by the local Watertown Daily Times, but report that she has not made an endorsement:
Dede Scozzafava, the Republican and Independence parties candidate in the 23rd Congressional District, is suspending her campaign and releasing her supporters.
The state Assemblywoman has not backed either of her two opponents in the race, Doug Hoffman or Bill Owens.
What prompted the withdrawal? The new Siena poll this morning shows Scozzafava trailing both candidates badly:
The race for the 23rd Congressional District is too close to call between Democrat Bill Owens (36 percent) and Conservative Doug Hoffman (35 percent) heading into the final days of the campaign. Republican Assembly member Dede Scozzafava has dropped to 20 percent, with nine percent of voters still undecided, according to a new Siena (College) Research Institute poll of likely voters.
Owens has increased his lead among Democrats, while Hoffman has taken the lead with Republicans and maintained his lead with independent voters. Hoffman has widened his lead in the southern portion of the district, as Owens’ lead in the eastern part of the district has narrowed and Scozzafava’s strong lead in the western portion of the district has virtually disappeared, although she maintains a narrow lead. By a 51-29 percent margin, likely voters have an unfavorable view of Scozzafava, while both Hoffman (41-37 percent) and Owens (40-36 percent) receive slightly favorable ratings from voters.
“Unfortunately for Assemblywoman Scozzafava, this has become a two person race between Owens and Hoffman,” said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg. “She now has the support of only one in five voters, having gone from 35 percent support to 20 percent support since the beginning of the month.["]
This confirms the basic thrust of the three earlier polls, and especially the Daily Kos poll, which got the ranking of the candidates and the distribution of the vote almost exactly correct. Scozzafava has seen her negatives explode, while her two opponents have only become more accepted as they became more well known. She has no chance of winning this race, and her withdrawal leaves Hoffman with the Republican vote whether she endorses him or not.
Will the NRCC shift gears and start buying ads supporting Hoffman in the final three days of this race?
Update: I had neglected to review the poll in much detail, but I suspect that Scozzafava’s withdrawal (or suspension, more accurately, since her name will stay on the ballot) hurts Bob Owens tremendously. According to the poll, Hoffman had attracted 50% of the Republican vote, while Owens had 2/3rds of the Democrats. Hoffman leads Owens among independents, 40%-35%, and the remaining 15% supporting Scozzafava will almost certainly break more towards Hoffman than Owens. Owens will likely get more of Scozzafava’s Democratic supporters, but she only had 11%, while 14% have already gone to Hoffman. Hoffman and Owens had a near-even split of the opposition in Scozzafava’s regional stronghold of Jefferson/Lewis/St. Lawrence counties, but I’d be surprised if Hoffman didn’t pick up more in those areas of disaffected Scozzafava voters, too.
Hoffman now has the default Republican endorsement with Scozzafava’s retreat, as well as all of the late momentum.
Update II: Dave Weigel reports via Twitter that “Hoffman activists are heading to Scozzafava’s HQ to convince her to make an endorsement.”

Gotta give Newt a point for 1994. He has done exactly nothing right literally since the day after the 1994 elections. A beautiful mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Forget telling lies. He’s a weirdo. Did you what he did? He stalked Sarah. He tracked the hotel in which she stayed incognito when she was being airlifted for her VP run and went and booked the room she stayed in and even commented on sleeping on the same bed. That’s just too weird and Fox should ban him.

Does anyone know why the Ca-10 race has been practically ignored by everyone, including the RNC and RNCC? A seat is a seat and this would also send a message to the Blue Dogs…
Harmer (R) vs Garmendi (D). Recent polling show Garmendi comfortably in the lead, though Utopia himself went out to the area to campaign for Garmendi.
More of the magic. Make sure you don’t watch what the other hand is doing.

This is one of a series of monumental blunders by Obama towards Sarah.
I still say the biggest political blunder in human history was screwing with her after the election. We have tons of research, almost enough to write a small book. It now looks like we can even tie Anita Dunn into the Alaska Mafia, along with Pete Rouse, Phil Munger, and the hateful idiot bloggers.
Sarah Palin would have been very happy to peacefully go back home and just govern Alaska. But Obama put the word out for the dems to destroy her up there.
While I most certainly agree with you over NY-23 and Obama’s deal there, it was a HUGE miscalculation, Obama screwing with her up in Alaska was just a horrific mistake.
I’ve never met Sarah, but for the last couple of years I have read up a lot on her. In the last year it has been intense reading. I also have friends up there who have met her and Todd. Sarah comes off as one of the warmest, nicest, most decent folks you’d ever hope to know, until you piss her off.
There is saying in Alaska about the landscape being littered with the corpses of those who have crossed her! I was serious the other day when I said she probably has a spot on the wall picked out to mount Obama’s head when this is all over!
I hate to come off sounding like a “fanboy” or a cultist. But it’s hard to contain the excitement for this woman. Now I base my feelings on principles and of course, a lot of research, but I will be honest, in my lifetime, and I’m including the Great Ronald Reagan, I have never felt this sort of excitement. I’ve certainly never spent this sort of effort in support of someone.
Sarah is a unique figure in our history. Sarah is one of those rare people that says what she means, and means what she says.
Of course, she’d be the first to credit Reagan, who she quotes all of the time. Sarah studied Reagan, learned from Reagan. I’m going to go right ahead and say this, Sarah Palin may be one of Reagan’s greatest legacies. His principles certainly helped shape Sarah’s
So take some Reagan, and mix in Sarah’s own dynamic personality, and her unwavering determination, and you have something the likes we haven’t seen in our lifetime.
This is why I know she will make one hell of a President. Here she is, a private citizen, armed ONLY with LOTUS (the Laptop Of The United States) and Facebook, and she pretty much is setting the debate!
She posted on FB last night asking people to watch Boehner’s deal today and the GOP HC proposal. How many millions will see that now, who would have otherwise never known about it?
Can you imagine what she can do as POTUS?
There will be some real change in D.C. when this gal comes to town!

Want a laugh? CNN reporter: “The battle over the Republican Party’s first victim may be taking place in NY 23″ She’s not talking about the democrat here folks. This rhetoric will be played out (and fed by the liberal playbook) that Republicans are divided and conflicted over their choices between moderates and strict social and fiscal conservatives. The spin, even after this Tuesday’s elections, will be “a party in chaos”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even moderates will join in supporting a “true conservative candidate” over any democrat that has a track record of supporting big government, big tax increases coupled with spending programs that are breaking the backs of middle class taxpayers.
And, as our liberal (insert adjective) James Carville has always said, “IT’S THE ECONOMY, STUPID”. Even Obama knows this as he vainly attempted to proclaim the recession is over even while unemployment is heading higher. Propping up a false economy by infusing/printing unfunded dollars is the biggest economic joke being played on this nation. It will be short lived, and could very well cause an ever further decline in consumer spending power. Wall Street will always make money when the market goes in either direction, but in the end, purchasing power and business expansion—-THAT CREATES JOBS—can not continue under Obama and Pelosi’s government take-over of private enterprise on the backs of taxpayers.
The tide is changing. And there will be plenty of cudos to pass out, but this is just the beginning of the battle to take this nation back. Fill your quivers!!!!

In all the hoopla I want to take a moment and say that I don’t think Ms. Scozzafava ever did a thing wrong, and that perhaps we should take a moment and remember that we are dealing with the dreams and disappointments of a human being here.
This is not to say that I am wishing for things to have gone differently, for at best I am agnostic on the subject. I instead merely state that Ms. Scozzafava did everything she was supposed to do, played the game within the rules, made no great excursions outside the norms of polite society–and ran into a buzzsaw for her troubles. Well, when they say “politics ain’t beanbag”, this is what they mean–and perhaps we should remember that.
For “ain’t beanbag” means that one will be opposed not because one is a bad person but because elections have consequences and there are no points for second place. It should not mean one will be demonized merely because one is opposed, and I am afraid we came too preciously close to that territory in this case–and some crossed it. I will reiterate again I have no troubles with Ms. Scozzafava losing–or even having a rebellion within the ranks on account of her. But I do have a problem with her being demonized and unduly ridiculed. Those things we should leave to the left, to make manifest their essential “will to power” natures that respects none but themselves. For ourselves, we should only show principled unwavering resolve and manly controlled determination.
And so I want to take a moment and say once again that Ms. Scozzafava, though perhaps of necessity had to be defeated, does not deserve and should not be despised. She always expressed her views, those views were accepted by the local powers that be, and if those views were not what we wish them to be, we must still grant that Ms. Scozzafava on the whole has acted honorably, did nothing wrong, and so at this moment I would call for three cheers for Dede Scozzafava, for having had the courage to get out there and engage in the arena to start with, and in the spirit of T.R., if she has been bloodied and bruised–and she has, no doubts, and largely through no fault of her own–then at least she does not cower with the frail timid spirits who never dared the great dares and never dreamed the great dreams.
And so I salute her, even if perhaps I would not have voted for her.
Horatius on October 31, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Gotta admit, I feel bad for Scozzafava. She got caught in the middle of all this, and I really admire her for stepping aside for the good of the party. That right there tells me, despite her liberal positions, that maybe she wouldn’t have been such a bad GOP rep. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this now.
Wonder what Newt will say?

SouthernGent on October 31, 2009 at 1:42 PM
Gingrich made a good argument to support the GOP candidate, if there had been a primary rather than a selection process. But his general point is still valid.
Let’s say that there had been a primary election in the district where you live, and a conservative was chosen to represent the GOP, and a bunch of out-district RINO’s ran a third party candidate to undercut the GOP, bled votes from the Republican, and the Democrat wound up winning?
While I think Hoffman was the right thing at the right time for the circumstances of NY-23, I don’t think this sort of action should carry over to the 2010 elections. Each district and state should nominate the candidate that they think best represents them. Then, if you want to get involved, either send money to, or withold money from the GOP nominee.
Third party candidates are not going to work for conservatives in 2010. The best thing to do is get directly involved in the primaries. Also, contribute to conservative-only PACs, like this one for conservative Senate candidates.
Gingrich was wrong on NY-23, but his overall point is valid.

Gingrich made the announcement via Twitter shortly after the Republican Party nominee Scozzafava announced she was releasing supporters from their commitment to back her. “Scozzafava dropping out leaves hoffman as only anti-tax anti-pelosi vote in ny 23 Every voter opposed to tax increases support doug hoffman,” Gingrich wrote on…

Now we need the republican party to convince Daggett to drop out for the good of the country. Offer him most anything. If Daggett dropped out there could be a great reconciliation between the republican party and the conservative movement, possibly eliminating the risk of a major split of the coalition needed in 2010, which is the one, maybe last, hope of bringing the Obama takeover to a dead stop.

Not that I own a complete moron an explanation, but you need your face rubbed in this one.
First, it’s obvious that you have ZERO reading comprehension.
As I said, I base my feeling for Palin as a person and a candidate on a LOT of research, I mean a LOT. remember, I blog too, when I’m not hanging out here! :-)
Now granted, here being a total babe sure caught my eye, at first. But that only goes so far. It’s her abilities, her accomplishments, her policies, and her positions that made me a staunch, unwavering supporter, no matter what she does.
Most of the people I interact with feel exactly the same.
Conservatives aren’t like “progressives” or whatever it is your “people” call yourselves this week. Conservatives can actually read, write and understand. We actually research things, and don’t just follow the bright and shiny, like a fish to a lure!
You guys are just lemmings who fell for bright and shiny, like a fish, and like a caught fish, your “hero” will eat you, if we don’t stop him for you!
Your welcome.

Make sure that your upper head still control your body, including your lower head.
Just keep your wee wee thing in check, you’ll be just fine.
RUN, SARAH! RUN! [for POTUS but away from the pervs!]

Indeed. That they’re cheerful, and actually have lives, in addition to their professional/political endeavours, drives the ‘ugly’ and deplete left berzerks.

Agreed. My point was, don’t get caught up in the PC of everything.
She is Asian, she is beautiful and she is conservative. What part of this is unacceptable? or untrue. So what. Go with it.
That’s my point. It’s not because she’s Asian that she’s so hot and smart. That is the liberal crap take on it…
She’s hot because she’s hot. She’s Asian because she’s Asian. She’s conservative because she’s smart.
Let it go.

Here’s the Corzine staffer story from NJ.com. If this guy was a top staffer for Corzine, I wonder if the gov’s camp is busy trying to destroy any evidence of his existence on their web site or on campaign literature.

That sure sounds a bit, erm, ‘unthinking’ of you. No matter what she does?
Scary.

NO one will ever beat the current Primadonna in Chief, ever!
Schadenfreude on October 31, 2009 at 2:25 PM
If standing up for Principles means Celebutante, then I go for that Celebutante.
At least, that Celebutante is a Leader with a Principle who knows how TO MAKE BIG DECISIONS …
and not just so-so celebrities who use their charms like Romney (do I look handsome in my TV interview) and Huck (I didn’t break my electric guitar).

Coward.

It’s all ok Katy. I don’t have anything to “let go” as I had never latched on to all the fawning. I find it sick, all over the MM threads. In fact, when I see an MM thread I run away, mostly, for this reason alone. I do admire her gumption and what she writes about and does. Her looks are really for her husband.
We’re good, no worries. You’re a good one.

Are you going to keep your word and bid us a fond farewell if Hoffman wins?
ddrintn on October 31, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Heh, I don’t care one way or the other, actually. I’m not following this race and I don’t care who wins. At this point, it’s a pretty standard 2-person race in what is apparently a pretty conservative district (although I know next to nothing about NY-23). So I guess Hoffman wins? Although that’s going to be an awful stain on the GOP brand.
My only point was that, while I think was will obviously help the conservative party candidate, it may have some unintended consequences. Like having an independent party withdraw support from a Republican candidate and give it to a Democratic candidate.
Endorsements don’t mean anything anyway, but I just thought it was interesting.

s. palin – smart, hot and hunts game from a freakin helicopter. now THATS my kinda girl
sidewinder22 on October 31, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Like hell you don’t. If Hoffman loses, you’ll be trumpeting how those knuckle-draggers are Nowheresville.
ddrintn on October 31, 2009 at 2:33 PM
Stop it moron, Sarah does NOT hunt from a helicopter. It doesn’t help when people keep repeating that stupidity.
gary4205 on October 31, 2009 at 2:36 PM
If conservatives win the Trifecta on Tuesday, I’m signing up for the 2010 Rino Hunt. Surfin’ Safari, Dudes!
BitterClinger on October 31, 2009 at 2:38 PM
Actually she’s probably taken more prey down from her facebook page.
katy on October 31, 2009 at 2:39 PM
Heh, of course not.
Clearly.
Which you don’t care about.
A stunning insight that reflects your complete lack of concern.
The graveyard is still there whether you’re whistling or not.
Jim Treacher on October 31, 2009 at 2:41 PM
Palin’s meant a quick extra six figures for Hoffman.
