Liz Cheney: I can’t believe Obama brought photogs to Dover with him
posted at 9:19 pm on October 30, 2009 by Allahpundit
Gateway Pundit clipped this yesterday and today it made the big time. I get the revulsion at photo ops with fallen soldiers, believe me, but look: He didn’t go to Dover as a prelude to pulling out. Even under the “McChrystal light” strategy that he’s toying with right now, we’re still talking about a build-up of some kind. If he had gone to Dover as a prelude to withdrawing, this photo would symbolize his willingness to abandon Afghanistan and, by extension, U.S. interests because he’s simply unwilling to accept casualties. Doing that on the backs of the dead, who fought valorously to win, would be intolerable. Going to Dover before a build-up symbolizes the opposite, that he is willing to accept the political consequences of further casualties to defend U.S. interests. Conveying that message by posing with a casket is dicey (although he did have the family’s permission), but it’s much more vivid than simply having a press pool reporter write it up — just as the photos of jumpers on 9/11 are much more vivid in communicating the stakes of terrorism than print accounts.
Look at it this way. A year from now, after many months more of hard fighting and men killed in action, which side is more likely to be angrily waving this photo in his face? Conservative hawks or the leftist doves in his own base? The answer is obvious, and don’t think he doesn’t know it. Yet he went and took the photo anyway. As a show of “tenacity” before the anti-war crowd that’s starting to shout at him about quagmires, you can do worse than this.

Touche! But here’s the thing: I disagree with President Bush a lot; I think his decision to invade Iraq here was wrong but when I never thought he was doing it deliberately or because he hated America. And when the Left made that argument–I found it as disgusting as I find this kind of behavior.

He’s also bombed the shit out of them with predator drones and stopped at least two domestic attacks this year.
Look, The One, is a tax and spend ultra liberal who naively believe that his smile can end any conflict, but he’s not a commie fascist out to hand our country over to Al-Qaeda. He may yet bring us defeat with his hesitation and inherent aversion to war/force, but that’s different from the ulterior motives some ascribe to him.
This was a self-serving, disgraceful event. He was politicizing and using the deaths of our fallen. But he’s not pro-terrorist. And Allah’s right to note that we (conservatives who care about defense) have basically won the Afgan-troop-number battle. The only question now is how many troops McChrystal will receive.

I know only one family gave permission for the press to be there but there were 14 or 15 bodies coming home. Did Obama stay and salute the others since he was already there or simply this one who’s family allowed the press?

seejanemom on October 30, 2009 at 10:07 PM
No matter if he is pulling out or changing the strat or what using Dead Soldiers for a photo op is disgusting, no matter what party or cause you’re for.
What makes it worse is that Obama doesn’t show any support or praise of our troops unless its to help himself.
With the troop numbers, anything less than what the General wants is a kick in the ass to everyone serving. McCrystal said he needs 40,000 troops to win, so if you send 20,000 you’re saying “Well we’ll just let you guys work it out overthere and die till we have time to pull out”
Its better to put 40,000 in so each man has the backup they need and the forces to win rather than put less. Would Obama rather send 40,000 troops now and win or spend another moronic 10 years there sending 20,000 each year, odds are the latter will cause many many more soldiers to die.
Rbastid on October 30, 2009 at 10:07 PM
Exactly. You said what I was thinking.
mbs on October 30, 2009 at 10:07 PM
Liz is just being Liz.
There is nothing wrong with the President going to Dover like this. There were no political speeches… his comments were sensible and echoed comments of many past Presidents who have had to take decisions which lead to the deaths of US servicemen and women. It is the underside of his own policies that was being recorded… rather than marching bands and dramatic flyovers.
I’ve been to this section of Dover to recover a body many years ago. It is not glitzy. It is not campaign material. It is sad.
So shut up Liz.

When Ogabe went over to Copenhagen in his failed effort to bring the Olympics to Chicago, he was only a stones throw from our troops. Did he make any kind of effort to stop in and see them, rally behind them, thank them for their service, their bravery?
Hell no.
So, to repeat, I’m not buying this phony baloney’s caring for our troops routine.
The Olympics was about him. Everything is about him. His ego does not allow for showing respect or compassion for our country’s finest.

Yep. Thanks. I had temporarily forgotten that fiasco (there are so many).
It’s all about Barry. The rest of us are faceless, nameless minions, those who die, those who have no jobs, those who disagree. Heck! It’s almost Stalinist except that Stalin didn’t take his ol’ lady out on the town with a press entourage to rub it in the serfs’ faces. He had a little more class.
Remember this. BO comes from a tradition where life is cheap. His father, assuming it was Barack Hussein, was a Marxist Kenyan. His mentors were Communists including his white grandpappy and Frank Marshall Davis. The list goes on.
No wonder he refers to the great, mainstream Americans as “bitter clingers.” That remark wasn’t just about groups in Pennsylvania. He’s at war with a large portion of this country. It’s the middle class. It’s Alinsky.

That does not matter. Winning the war matters. We will not accept a half-ass, “better half a loaf” argument about how he did what reasonable people could rationally expect him to accomplish, in the context. And he’s come right out and said “victory” isn’t something he likes to imagine.
I think just about everybody complaining about it, including Liz Cheney, mentioned that what is wrong about it is the photograph of Obama with the coffin. Yes, Presidents make speeches about the war dead. Abraham Lincoln did it. Americans still memorize that speech. Lincoln too went to visit the war dead at Gettysburg. He was also photographed; but he damn well was not photographed next to a flag-draped coffin.
Chris_Balsz on October 30, 2009 at 10:20 PM
well the other families didn’t want Obama using their dead family members as a photo op so I don’t think he had a choice but to only salute that one. I’m guessing the other families didn’t fight against having photos taken, just against the caskets being used as a prop for O.
Do families have any say in whether photos are taken at all, or did Obama just ask permission to be polite?

http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/dprk/nuke.htm
At the time we invaded Iraq, available intelligence showed that Irag possessed weapons of mass destruction, but not yet nuclear weapons. Iran was years away from nuclear weapons. What country was the right one to invade, in your opinion?

Sorry AP but that is pure horse-$hit. This piece of crap wanted a picture of himself saluting a casket for his permanent campaign functions. Remember this is the guy during the campaign that chose not to visit injured GI’s in Germany during his European I am so awesome tour after he found out he could not bring cameras along. He could give less than a $hit about our troops, which is evident because of his dithering over a request by the commander for more while troops are under-supported and dieing in the field.
Bush, like him or not, never ever would have done this.
conservnut on October 30, 2009 at 10:22 PM
What? I never expected you to play the moral relativism game with fallen soldiers Allahpundit. Using them for a photo op is disgusting no matter what his military policies are.

He could have saluted anyone he wanted, he needs the family’s permission to take photos.
mbs on October 30, 2009 at 10:24 PM
I am glad they let the families decide to let cameras in or not. I just don’t think cameras should be allowed. This is such an emotional time. I just find the cameras being there for a photo op in poor taste.
With all the dithering in Afghanistan sometimes you don’t need a speech to make a point that you pretend to care.
Brat4life on October 30, 2009 at 10:24 PM
The old question. What would the media have done with an event like this had it been staged by President Bush. It would have been wall to wall main stream indignation. The media would have found as many families as they could have who disagreed with it and would have gotten all the statements about how “Bush was the cause” and so on. Or for fun, Google “Mission Accomplished.”
Here is the gottom line. We do NOT photograpgh these things. On Disney Drive in Bagram or at the ramp here in Kandahar we simply stand on either side and pay our respects to the fallen while they’re being taken home to their loved ones. We didn’t in Iraq either. No one, to include the civilian contractors who work with us, are forbidden from joining the ranks of the ones paying their repects. But there is no picture taking allowed. The crews who carry these heroes home are not supposed to photograpgh them on the aircraft or during the time they’re being brought on or taken off. It’s not done. Surely someone must have adviced the administration of these protocals and they chose to ignore it.
We in the military are now not only pawns, we’re props to too for the liberals. This sickens me to no end.
We miss you President Bush and VP Cheney.

HS, no one checked his pants except MO. That’s probably why she’s so pissed off all the time.
The Chicago boys figured this was a guy (with Ayers daddy and Bill’s help) who could wow white folks into thinking this was a great candidate. They pushed BO and manufactured (Emil Jones) a legislative career for this creep in the Ill. senate. They pushed Barry as far as they could. Right into the WH.
This is what we’re stuck with. A nothing. BO is nothing. It’s what is underneath that counts. Many people think BO figures he can rule the world. I disagree. He knows he’s a loser, and he’s simply a mouthpiece for more ambitious people who are far more conniving and far sighted. Barry is a tool. He just hasn’t figured it out yet. And there’s the rub.
There’s going to be a clash between Barfy’s ego and reality, i.e. his makers. He isn’t shit without them.
And our only recourse is to watch and pray that it doesn’t get out of control.

I’m going through stories now. There were 18, including DEA agents which explain why Holder was there. He certainly talked to all the families and witnessed all but it doesn’t say if he saluted all. He must have. I would think the others families would have been pretty angry if he had only done it for the last.
It’s really strange though this raw video clearly shows Obama and the rest leaving the C-17 and then standing to salute. Did they go on and off the C-17 for each body? All the bodies were on the same transport correct? Wouldn’t they just have remained in position as each body left? Or was there some time between each body which would require them to come and go?

I hope he “Fails”, in every sense, to derive traction or sympathy for his blatant (as evidenced by his press “pool”) photo op with our HONORED DEAD.
MEMO TO OBAMA (and co.): RESPECT is EARNED NOT EXPECTED.
You, Sir, are everyone’s President. You ARE our Commander in Chief. Please DON’T diminish yourself, or your Office, by pandering. And THAT IS what this was.
A “Photo – Op” moment with the “Honored Dead” of our country. America’s children, and Honored Heros. To you, sir, that is all this was. To the rest of America, well, we recognize it for what it was. We understand, or at least hope, that your salute was heartfelt and we hope you meant it in the spirit it should be given in!
All of America HOPES you will back that salute, in the spirit of the SACRIFICE given.

Hi guys. I just got in from running errands tonight, and haven’t read everything. But I’m wondering, is it appropriate for a President as commander-in-chief to render a military salute. I know Reagan always returned one in kind when getting off Marine One, but I think he was just being light-hearted. I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t, I’m just asking.
Is he grandstanding? Maybe he is, but he’s also taking a political risk with his liberal base, by making this visit as a prelude to stepping up involvement in Afghanistan. Makes you wonder how much of an eye-opener he got in those security briefings right after his election.
As to bowing to a prince — come on, do you guys really think Obama is the first President to bend over for Saudi Arabia?
