Video: The obligatory “Larry David pees on a painting of Jesus” clip

posted at 6:00 pm on October 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

People have been buzzing about it and the indignant Catholic League statement has been duly issued, so I suppose this is worth a thread. For a variety of reasons, starting with my Internet nom de plume, I have no problem with blasphemy; what’s amazing, though, is that a tired goof on Christian iconography could still retain a comic charge for someone like Larry David. The South Park guys do religious humor well because their gags are inventive and they’re willing to take on all comers, not just Bible-believers. This clip, by contrast, makes you feel like you’re watching the umpteen-thousandth local news segment about some family that sees Jesus in the mold on their ceiling. In fact, David probably came up with the idea after he stumbled across a reference somewhere to “Piss Christ.” Which is now, um, more than 20 years old.

The other odd thing about goofs like this is that they’re not, shall we say, topical. Any comic who takes a poke at JC these days will be asked this question, and very few of them will have a good answer to it.

Update (Ed): I almost never watch this show, not because I don’t appreciate good satire (I love South Park and Penn & Teller and their Showtime show Bullshit, even though they occasionally criticize Catholics and Christianity), but because the constant screeching gets on my nerves.  I happened to watch this particular episode, however, and I don’t get the outrage — or at least don’t get a rational reason for it.  I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails today saying that Larry David mocked Jesus, but pretty obviously, David mocked the people who see Jesus in their grilled cheese sandwiches and the like.  There is a very large difference between the two, thankfully, and the latter are certainly eligible for a satirical poke or two from time to time.   In fact, South Park has already ripped those in terms more specific to my own Catholic faith in one episode, and while I disagreed with it, I didn’t think it fell outside the boundaries of social satire.  Also, we should note that David did do an episode poking fun at the burqas of Muslim women, which isn’t quite analogous to this episode, but went further than most other television shows would dare.

Conservatives who will get easily offended should probably ignore Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Russia has got a very long way to go before it’s the center of Christendom or the defender of Christianity.

I visited the USSR in 1976: the monastery next to my hotel room in Moscow was completely dark.
We were not allowed into St. Basil’s.
The Czars’ chapel in the Kremlin had had all the icons removed, leaving only blank spaces.
Then there were those many churches, monasteries and nunneries that Stalin just plain destroyed.
Nicholas II and his family–who were murdered by Lenin and his regime–were only given a proper Russian Orthodox burial in the 1990′s.
Worst of all, Putin has thrown in with the Muslims.
Oops.

So the Muslims need to lighten up over the cartoons but the Jesus people freak out over a bit of satire.

It’s not a religion thing, it’s a comedy thing. Pissing on the Koran is way more funny. You should try it.

Perhaps, like me, they spend a lot of time praying at the porcelain alter.

It can be very comforting knowing that Jesus is looking down on you as you’re pucking up your socks while praying if He’ll just let you live, you’ll never drink again.

Do you know there is a difference between a Christian that blows up an abortion clinic, another that kills a ton of Muslims in the name of the british empire its want of resources and buries them in pigskins, and a muslim quietly praying in his home?

LevStrauss on October 30, 2009 at 12:19 PM

And you know the difference between your scenarios and mine? Yours happen infrequently, and mine happen every f***ing day. Anyone with a whit of intellect would be able to look at the incidences of each and realize that, hey, in our modern age, where you fallaciously believe yourself to be up-to-date, Lutherans, Methodists, and Baptists are the least of your worries. Try paying attention to the common denominator in the 15,000 terrorist attacks committed in the last eight years, you spoon-fed zealot.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is a great show and you don’t need to agree with Larry’s political views to enjoy it, but good sense of humor is vital. The week before, David was mocking women on wheelchairs, the all point of the show is that it’s not PC (being not PC is the essence of the Republican party). I like it when he makes fun of Jews and Christians. It always good every now and then to be reminded I’m part of a religion that when satirized, none of it’s members goes out to the streets, burn cars, destroy everything that comes their way and murder the mocker. Let’s see Larry David makes fun of Muhammad, now that will be groundbreaking in the “un-PC” movement and an episode to remember.

In the first season or 3 or 3 he did an episode with the blind guy who didn’t want anyone to look at his girlfriend because he was a really jealous guy so Larry set him up with a Muslim woman in a burka and, well, things obviously go downhill.

So yeah, Islam has been a target of ridicule too.

To imply that Larry chose to use the Jesus instead of Mohammad shows you don’t have a clue what the episode was about.

Larry was mocking the ludicrous Christian phenomenon of people getting all excited when they claim a religious picture of some ilk is crying or bleeding, as if a supreme being would actually make something so stupid happen. The topic is always topical, and I haven’t seen it used in comedy very much at all.

There is no equivalent phenomenon in Islam. There’s plenty of other stupidity to tap into, but this episode was about what it was about.

That you would only be impressed if he figured out some way to lampoon Mohammed couldn’t possibly be more irrelevant.

David mocked the people who see Jesus in their grilled cheese sandwiches and the like.

How is this mocking people who see Jesue in their grilled cheese sandwiches? Because the urine on the picture was supposed to be a tear? Was there something later in the show that suggested the tear was of divine origins? I’m not getting this.

To me, in this context, there was a picture of Jesus on the wall, and this idiot couldn’t find the center of the toilet, and piss sprayed all over the place. Nothing funny or outrageous about any of it.

I say, if you’re going to piss on a picture of Jesus, then be a man, and take the picture off the wall and piss on it. If you don’t think that’s funny, then don’t do it all.

This was half-assed and lame, unworthy of neither my time, my outrage, nor my laughter.

In this day and age mocking Muhammad is the ultimate anti-PC and to be honest, more enjoyable. There’s nothing groundbreaking about making fun of Islamic fashion, it happens everyday, ask Srkozy. As for this episode, it is what it is because that’s what Larry wrote. It most certainly wasn’t a case of him having a Mohommed plot ready to go and then chickening out and watering it down to a Jesus plot.

Dave Rywall on October 30, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Not to sound like Obama, but “as I said before,” I love that episode, I think it was the best so far this season.

Michelle Dubois on October 30, 2009 at 5:09 PM

Good thing Ol’ Larry didn’t splash urine on a copy of the Koran or sketch of Mohammed, otherwise we’d be seeing video of muslim terrorists beheading the lame-a$$ comic and liberals decrying the vulgarity and insensitivity to such a deplorable act…and I don’t mean the beheading. Gotta love those double-standards we see daily from lefty a-holes like this jacka$$.

I am still trying to figure out why most people think Larry David is some sort of comedic genius.

You do know he was the co-creator/executive producer/writer of “Seinfeld”, right? Not saying this excuses his antics on this episode, but…he was the brains behind ‘Seinfeld’. (along with Seinfeld). (And not every “Seinfeld” episode was a winner, either)

Fed45 on October 30, 2009 at 6:04 PM

I’m thinking of being a comedy writer/producer/director.
I’m thinking of a comedy family series, based in the past, say 1944 in Poland. I’m thinking Auschwitz. A nice Jewish family and their day to day funny struggles. Maybe a few of them disappear slowly. Hilarious!

What? Too close to that movie? Perhaps throw in a Polish movie director at the camp with them. This one could rape 13 year old girls. Even more hilarious.

Jeff from WI on October 30, 2009 at 6:05 PM

How long has that show been on? I haven’t had HBO in years, but I do remember Curb Your Enthusiasm was one of the few shows I would laugh out loud while watching.

I think I saw the first 2 seasons, it was never really political or anything, just funny.

I hate when people listen to a couple clips of Rush and instantly decide he’s a racist. I think the same thing is happening here on the flip side.

I hate when Christians act like Islamic rage boy over something so trivial. All this talk of, “Would he pee on Mohammed?” is just plain stupid, in my opinion and makes people sound like a bunch of whiny crybabies.

My guess is, David is running out of ideas and his show is losing steam, so this gives him some nice press (without having to molest an intern).

Dave Rywall on October 30, 2009 at 2:37 PM

And he probably mock his own religion on the show more than any other. He’s an equal opportunity offender. And like others have pointed out, he was mocking the absurdity of some people seeing Jeebus in tortilla’s and what not.

Fed45 on October 30, 2009 at 7:37 PM

David mocked the people who see Jesus in their grilled cheese sandwiches and the like. There is a very large difference between the two, thankfully, and the latter are certainly eligible for a satirical poke or two from time to time.–Ed.

We may have to agree to disagree then, Ed. He could have just as easily given a satirical poke by urinating, then washing his hands and accidentally splashing water on the picture, causing it to look like He was crying. As actor, director, producer and writer, he chose to pee on a portrait of Christ.

Why do I feel like you should award yourself the Louis Renault award for being “shocked, shocked” that people could be legitimately offended by this?

DrAllecon on October 30, 2009 at 9:04 PM

does Larry David anywhere paint OTHER Christians as anything other than morons? From the few short clips I have seen, I am assuming he doesn’t, but will happily give Ed a pass if Larry David is only mocking CERTAIN Christians as Ed claims he is, and can describe to me a scene wherein Larry David portrays Christians as intelligent in any way.

Danzo

Larry David mocks Christians, Jews, Muslims… Pick a religion and he’s likely mocked it. Not sure he could get away with mocking Christian Scientists, however. He’d be left with no one wanting to guest star on the show.

Actually there is one episode where he finds out that he is adopted and his real parents were Christian. He becomes a nice guy… he is forgiving, generous, and then he finds out that the adoption thing was wrong and he reverts back to being an asshole.

Now some Jews might have been offended by that but it was funny. I like the show… he is unbearable at times but there are some very funny scenes in just about every episode. The show is not PC and I like my entertainment that way. HBO still has better programming than anyone else.

lexhamfox on October 30, 2009 at 10:20 PM

Men are pigs when it comes to urinating while standing. This is because of a design flaw. When we are done, sometimes those last few drops don’t make it out. Then the tip gets a type of crust, after drying up, that diverts the flow next time we go. Men over 30 know what I’m talking about. One time I hit my forehead and feet at the same time. All men should sit when the occasion arises. There is a benefit. You’ll get less grief from the woman in your life because the seat will always be down. On the other hand, if you’re fastidious about washing your hands, then you can use your fingers to pry open the tip before you go while standing. Remember to put the seat down when you’re done. If you’re brave, start complaining to the woman in your life about having to always raise the seat when you have to go. Is this on or off topic? I’m really confused after reading all the comments.

MaximusConfessor on October 30, 2009 at 1:11 PM

jonknee on October 30, 2009 at 1:45 PM

While Larry David and his bro’s are cracking up laughing about his desecrating a religious icon of Christ God…what he should be doing is considering the fact that:

JESUS CHRIST IS THE JEWISH MESSIAH..God Incarnate!

Evidently some people think it is funny to piss on God and that DESECRATING A RELIGIOUS ICON..which is a (HATE CRIME) is great fun and that teaching our children that this is funny..also is great fun.

Granted that this icon is a heretical protestant icon but (Like all protestant icons they present Christ as very senusal and sexual, lacking any indication of holiness,no tri radiant halo,no theological significance etc) it is a religious icon none the less.

The REAL icons of the Orthodox Church are extremely powerful. Both in my parish and in a parish in the neighboring town, we have had people HEALED OF CANCER just by touching miracle working icons or relics of our SAINTS.

The Orthodox Church also has the original icons handpainted by St. Luke(the author of the Gospel of Luke).

As for our Holy Myrhh streaming icons,
anybody who has done any research would know about the fleece be-dewed..

Judges 6 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.

(Like all of the Old Testament),this verse is a prophecy about Jesus Christ, the jewish Messiah God Incarnate.

The dew is the Son of God..the fleece is the Blessed Virgin Mary Theotokos..the result is the Incarnation by which Israel(the Church)will be saved!

The presence of the Holy Spirit often produces dew and in the Orthodox Church (being Christ’s Holy Church)this happens often on our Holy Icons.

This is a scientific fact completely proven by the numerous scientific examinations of this phenomenom.

Our miraculous healings, miracle working icons,Holy Fire in the Orthodox Church of the Sepulchre..many proven and reoccuring miracles.

It’s all available proven scientific fact, but you people refuse to listen because your hearts are too hardened and you don’t want to know the truth.

Now you’re the victim of Larry David’s Hate Crimes right?
You’re not fooling anyone.

I have already found 5 or 6 israeli websites where they are just cracking up laughing about this giving props to Larry David for his DESECRATION OF A RELIGIOUS ICON of Jesus Christ(which is a HATE CRIME).

No other religion today does this.

Look at the muslims. They have already demanded a public apology from HBO for this and are ready to sue.

Poor you. You don’t control of the Russian media which accounts for less than 4% of all media. Poor baby.

Yes the atheists also commit hate crimes against Christians and desecrate religious icons, but the atheists are not a legitimate religious movement.

All of the atheist movements have been founded by people who did not believe in atheism.

The silly, gullible and bitter atheist minority have always been nothing but pawns, used and abused and too stupid to even realize that their movements were always founded by non atheists.

Wow I guess that makes you people the stupidest sheeple of all.
