Video: The obligatory “Larry David pees on a painting of Jesus” clip
posted at 6:00 pm on October 29, 2009 by Allahpundit
People have been buzzing about it and the indignant Catholic League statement has been duly issued, so I suppose this is worth a thread. For a variety of reasons, starting with my Internet nom de plume, I have no problem with blasphemy; what’s amazing, though, is that a tired goof on Christian iconography could still retain a comic charge for someone like Larry David. The South Park guys do religious humor well because their gags are inventive and they’re willing to take on all comers, not just Bible-believers. This clip, by contrast, makes you feel like you’re watching the umpteen-thousandth local news segment about some family that sees Jesus in the mold on their ceiling. In fact, David probably came up with the idea after he stumbled across a reference somewhere to “Piss Christ.” Which is now, um, more than 20 years old.
The other odd thing about goofs like this is that they’re not, shall we say, topical. Any comic who takes a poke at JC these days will be asked this question, and very few of them will have a good answer to it.
Update (Ed): I almost never watch this show, not because I don’t appreciate good satire (I love South Park and Penn & Teller and their Showtime show Bullshit, even though they occasionally criticize Catholics and Christianity), but because the constant screeching gets on my nerves. I happened to watch this particular episode, however, and I don’t get the outrage — or at least don’t get a rational reason for it. I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails today saying that Larry David mocked Jesus, but pretty obviously, David mocked the people who see Jesus in their grilled cheese sandwiches and the like. There is a very large difference between the two, thankfully, and the latter are certainly eligible for a satirical poke or two from time to time. In fact, South Park has already ripped those in terms more specific to my own Catholic faith in one episode, and while I disagreed with it, I didn’t think it fell outside the boundaries of social satire. Also, we should note that David did do an episode poking fun at the burqas of Muslim women, which isn’t quite analogous to this episode, but went further than most other television shows would dare.
Conservatives who will get easily offended should probably ignore Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Pssst… it’s not actually a picture of the Lord Jesus.
I think we could say… forgive him, he knows not what he does.

Larry David is spiritually dead. The dead stink, so you get this kind of thing.
The Romans had a saying when it came to blasphemy: “Let the gods avenge themselves.”
There is only one God, and vengeance is His. Only He can execute judgment perfect in mercy and justice. There are too many godhaters in this world for anyone but God to keep track of. And He does.

I’ve seen black Madonna & Child, black Jesus on the cross, asian Jesus and disciples depictions. People often portray Jesus as common to them, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
At the same time, taking offense at someone pissing on the written word “Jesus” could be dismissed just as stupidly as your excusing this, I guess. “Jesus isn’t five letters on paper!”

Absolutely amazed at the bravery and foolishness of some people. He is only able to do this because God loves us and knows we are foolish, stupid and really need Him. So, He is patient and forbearing with each individual for an entire lifetime if necessary so they may come to their senses and come to Him. We are shocked to see someone so brazen in their rebellion but at the same time, we know we are all in rebellion to Him in some way or another. Even those who are privileged through faith to know Him realize we are at best unprofitable servants. Therefore we live by faith, seek God and the life He offers to us. He accepts our faith and trust in Him (through His Son Jesus Christ) and begins a work in us. There is no hope unless His life and purpose is working in us. We look forward to that glorious day when His work in done and we live with Him forever!

Well I don’t seek to define what is, since none of us have that kind of information. I have repeatedly talked about the hubris of atheism. Frankly if there was a god, god would probably be rather insulted by his will being decided upon due to incoherent ancient fable books that are blasphemy to the laws he may have created on this planet.
People don’t rise from the dead, one fish will always remain one fish, same for loaves of bread, and wine cannot be made from water alone. I do know that much.
Yes, he probably would, but I don’t see how that makes any difference. This isn’t really a this or that argument, I never said Islam in its current form is any kind of ideal. If Chrysler is a piece of crap, it doesn’t mean that GM cars are the ideal by default. Islam is less evolved than Christianity, in many places its level of development, along with society’s level of development is about six hundred years behind Christianity. But really that is neither here nor there, Islam is still nothing in size or power compared to Christianity in the US, globally that is a different story.

I live in the buckle of the Bible Belt and it’s not very typical to see a picture of Jesus in anyone’s home, much less the bathroom.
At the heart of this lame “joke” is the Jewish proscription (based on the 2nd commandment) against any sort of (graven) image of God.
They think Christians are saps for so many reasons, but having visual representations of the Lord will do as good as any.
That being said, I would find any skit about someone going to the bathroom (and making a mess) tasteless and disgusting.
Jenfidel on October 30, 2009 at 10:56 AM
The headline to this post is more put-offing than the clip. What the heck, toilet overspray happens. And who keeps “Jesus” face-to-face while so enthroned? Somebody has a bowel problem needing devine intervention?
BTW, I love Jesus.

And film it for a TV show or a film? You do know know what satire is, correct?
While I do not agree or endorse what Larry David chose to do, it is protected under the 1st Amendment as satire and freedom of expression. I prefer South Park for my satire because no one is safe from ridicule and mocking.
Boycott Larry David’s show and write HBO if you’re so inclined. It’s all a publicity stunt to attract attention.

People asking “When are they going to do this to a Koran?” are probably thinking about these things much more globally than the average person.
There are a lot of Muslims in America but there aren’t that many. Doing something like this to a Koran would probably be seen as picking on a minority but and even uglier truth is that Muslims aren’t a significant enough contributor to American culture for most artists or comedians to even consider poking fun at them.

Perhaps the funniest thing ever broadcast was when Maher had Victor Davis Hanson on via feed for an interview. The interview ends, and Maher -blithely unaware that he has just had his ass intellectually souffled and and artfully presented to him- turns to his panel for reaction and Sir Ian McKellen sputters “That man’s a college professor!? I’m a professor!”
Yes, Maher does have guests with adversarial points of view on; it’s just that neither he, or any of his coterie of lock-steppers, have any perceptive ability beyond an ego-centrically limited intellectual grasp.
Not unlike yourself. As your fifteen minutes are surely due, have you received your invite to appear yet?
Doorgunner on October 30, 2009 at 11:42 AM
I’m a non-believer and a fan since the show’s pilot episode, but I can’t understand how anyone who calls himself a Christian wouldn’t be insulted by that episode. The entire point was to insult you. In the face, so to speak. If the point was to make fun of the kinds of people who see Jesus in their toast, he could have splashed, say, lemonade rather than piss on the painting. But then maybe you’re as stupid as he thinks you are. And if you complain, then it shows your intolerance. Kind of a Catch-22. Bottom line: Larry David would never have an episode literally (or symbolically) defecating on anything HE holds sacred, even a secular symbol like Anne Frank. And he won’t REALLY go after muslims because he’s too cowardly.
Sean68 on October 30, 2009 at 11:46 AM
Because Allah is an atheist & the “humor” in the video demeans the Lord Jesus Christ. Any other questions?
kg598301 on October 30, 2009 at 11:47 AM
Not exactly under hate crimes legislation there is increased curtailment of “freedom of expression”, but the main point is that the most fundamental basis of law is “equality of the law”, and with hate crimes legislation we make a mockery of that principle.
Like Animal Farm the speech of one group is more protected than another all for the sake of “equality”
LincolntheHun on October 30, 2009 at 11:49 AM
Larry David is not trying to make a geopolitical point, that’s why trying to attach this to the GWOT is rather moot here. He’s just lampooning the Jesus toast people. Get a sense of humor. And actually to do it for a picture of Muhammed would fit anyway since the strict muslims don’t have pictures of Muhammed. I could care less if they ridiculed Islam, because it is just as stupid as Christianity and other religions. This “this or that” view of this, Islam vs Christianity is ridiculous to all who think all religions are idiotic.

You protestants are pathetic and totally impotent!
How can you people put up with this stuff?!
In Orthodox Russia or ANY of the MANY Orthodox Christian countries..we would NEVER TOLERATE this kind of blatant blasphemy and brainwashing!
The reason why you accept it here is because protestant christianity in America is in a TOTAL State of Disarray and completely heretical.
Thousands of new “denominations” pop up annually all teaching conflicting and false teachings.
IT IS YOU “CHRISTIAN ZIONIST” HERETICS(ala JOHN HAGEE) WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESS THAT WE ARE IN IN AMERICA AND FOR THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE DE-CHRISTIANIZATION OF AMERICA THROUGH THE MEDIA!
It is a frightening fact(and a totally sad indication of the state of christianity in America), that there are some 35 MILLION people in the US that list “christian zionist” as their “denomination”.When in fact it is not even a church!
All in all there are 85 MILLION people in America who believe many christian zionist false teachings.
Know this..if you are a “Christian” Zionist..YOU ARE NOT A CHRISTIAN! PERIOD
“Christian” Zionists believe that the followers of judaism are the Biblical Israel of God..even though the Bible very clearly says that the CHURCH is the Israel of God!
You ignorant heretical protestants do not know any better..you accept any false teaching that comes around from outside the Church(as evidenced by these statistics quoted)..you have totally undermined Christian culture in America and created millions of atheists!
Repent and come back to the Church created and maintained by CHRIST,before there are no more christians left in America and before America becomes a communist nation!

See we can pick and choose the nuts and less nutty types to tell whatever story we wish? I am talking about the religions in general. Eventually you have to move away from strawmen and start tackling real arguments.
LevStrauss on October 30, 2009 at 12:19 PM
You make a very good point David.
It is a sad fact that the muslims are the only allies of the Orthodox Church in the fight against the De-Christianization of the world.
You protestant heretics should be ashamed of yourselves!
The fact that none of the protestant heretics know what the greatest threat to Christianity is and that none of them are suing HBO for exactly what this is (A HATE CRIME) proves that the protestant are totally impotent heretics.
America will fall very soon because of you! And America will become a communist fascist country where Christianity is illegal.
The only country left standing will be RUSSIA which is the center of Christendom in the world!

But I gave it a second try after calling him a name, and frankly, I think the name I called him was just as applicable as MadCon due to his own words.

His original handle was SaintOlaf. He got banned for being the jerk you’ve seen under his new handle. He was going off on the Jooos, Protestants, and literally anybody who was not a member of the Orthodox Church.
kingsjester on October 30, 2009 at 12:30 PM
OK…seems reasonable.
Uh-oh…
Indeed.
anuts on October 30, 2009 at 12:31 PM
You moron. Communism in Russia was a FOREIGN invention. 70 million Orthodox Christians were holocausted in that 100 year period.
You think the Russian people support communism in any way?
You are ignorant.
You need to study more before you continue saying ignorant things.
MaximusConfessor on October 30, 2009 at 12:32 PM
I understand that the word “Iconoclasm” was originally coined to describe how the Orthodox church desecrated and destroyed all such icons as images of various biblical figures.
Count to 10 on October 30, 2009 at 12:34 PM
You are a moron if that is who you think I am.
MaximusConfessor on October 30, 2009 at 12:35 PM
You moron.
Christianity was no more native to Russia than Communism.
Why then would Russia be the Christian center of the world? Where is that prophesied to occur, by the way? Or is it just your ethnic prejudice?
There were millions of EO who threw off their faith and ran Communist nations. This makes the bedraggled Russian citizenry no more culpable than the American Christians you love to hate.

That’s bass ackwards. Western Crusaders called in to help the Easterners defend against the Turks did this. It was a shame and a remains a blemish.

You can change your name, but you didn’t change your writing style or your belief system.
kingsjester on October 30, 2009 at 12:38 PM
He’s an obnoxious Eastern Orthodox zealot. If you see people calling him “St. Olaf”, it is because he writes a lot like a banned commenter by that name (though he denies any connection). He has a habit of butting into intellectual conversations on religion and philosophy with dogmatic rants.
Count to 10 on October 30, 2009 at 12:38 PM
MaximusConfessor,
Might I suggest you develop a more healthy conviction in what you profess to believe?
anuts on October 30, 2009 at 12:40 PM
This was pre-crusades, and related to when the Byzantines first saw Muslims smashing idols — at least one Emperor thought it was a good idea and followed suit.
Count to 10 on October 30, 2009 at 12:40 PM
You think we are iconoclasts?
Obviously you have never been inside of an Orthodox Church.
You should attend a service and see for yourself.

Well, it’s not like I’m requiring your religion to be consistent or anything.

It’s a recurrent theme for 400 years, that Moscow is the Third Rome.
Maximus, Russia is a fascist state, and where is the Orthodox Church about that?
Chris_Balsz on October 30, 2009 at 12:45 PM
Again you are showing your ignorance.
The leaders of the communist regime..WERE NOT ethnic Russian.
I already told you that communism was NOT a russian invention but was a FOREIGN invention and RUN by foreigners.
As for “throwing off one’s faith…
70 MILLION martyrdoms hardly qualify as “throwing off one’s faith”.
MaximusConfessor on October 30, 2009 at 12:46 PM
Curb Your Enthusiasm is a great show and you don’t need to agree with Larry’s political views to enjoy it, but good sense of humor is vital. The week before, David was mocking women on wheelchairs, the all point of the show is that it’s not PC (being not PC is the essence of the Republican party). I like it when he makes fun of Jews and Christians. It always good every now and then to be reminded I’m part of a religion that when satirized, none of it’s members goes out to the streets, burn cars, destroy everything that comes their way and murder the mocker. Let’s see Larry David makes fun of Muhammad, now that will be groundbreaking in the “un-PC” movement and an episode to remember.
Michelle Dubois on October 30, 2009 at 12:46 PM
Hmmmm, given that the emperor and the Muslims were mortal enemies this seems unlikely.
Just surfing a little on the topic I see your view mentioned and discounted, and saw reference to the Paulicians, who predated Muslim expansionism and are new to me.
At any rate, as for religious iconoclasm, I’m agin it.

1. Some need to make at least a cursory attempt at reading the existing posts before embarrassing themselves by posting the same tired comment for the umpteenth time.
2. Our country is so doomed. I’m not “wasting mental anguish” over this, but I’m definitely not a member of any of the three most popular schools of modern Christiantiy: The Naively Pacifistic, The Ambivalent, or the Completely Disinterested.
Polynath on October 30, 2009 at 12:49 PM
How dare you say that!
All you are doing is proving your ignorance!
Why do you say such stupid things without doing ANY research whatsoever?
Because you are typical brainwashed American who does no research whatsoever!
RUSSIA IS THE CENTER OF CHRISTENDOM IN THE WORLD AND THE ONLY NATION COMBATING THE NWO!
You will eat your words after America falls and you come crying running to Russia.
MaximusConfessor on October 30, 2009 at 12:50 PM
The implication is that he was looking for a reason that he was losing to the Muslims.
Count to 10 on October 30, 2009 at 12:52 PM
You’re ugly and your mother dresses you funny.
I didn’t know there was an ethnic qualification for being Christian. Lenin was baptised EO. Look it up.
I acknowledged it was a foriegn importation, but there is no evidence you can provide that shows that no Russians ran the regime. That’s the stupidest thing you have ever said.
These are not in the least mutually exclusive.

Hey, let’s piss on mohamed or Dawkins and see AP go nuts.
Stupid and idiotic comedians deserve no amount of notice or publicity (good or bad). Reason is not incompatible with faith – screw ‘em.
