Video: The obligatory “Larry David pees on a painting of Jesus” clip

posted at 6:00 pm on October 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

People have been buzzing about it and the indignant Catholic League statement has been duly issued, so I suppose this is worth a thread. For a variety of reasons, starting with my Internet nom de plume, I have no problem with blasphemy; what’s amazing, though, is that a tired goof on Christian iconography could still retain a comic charge for someone like Larry David. The South Park guys do religious humor well because their gags are inventive and they’re willing to take on all comers, not just Bible-believers. This clip, by contrast, makes you feel like you’re watching the umpteen-thousandth local news segment about some family that sees Jesus in the mold on their ceiling. In fact, David probably came up with the idea after he stumbled across a reference somewhere to “Piss Christ.” Which is now, um, more than 20 years old.

The other odd thing about goofs like this is that they’re not, shall we say, topical. Any comic who takes a poke at JC these days will be asked this question, and very few of them will have a good answer to it.

Update (Ed): I almost never watch this show, not because I don’t appreciate good satire (I love South Park and Penn & Teller and their Showtime show Bullshit, even though they occasionally criticize Catholics and Christianity), but because the constant screeching gets on my nerves.  I happened to watch this particular episode, however, and I don’t get the outrage — or at least don’t get a rational reason for it.  I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails today saying that Larry David mocked Jesus, but pretty obviously, David mocked the people who see Jesus in their grilled cheese sandwiches and the like.  There is a very large difference between the two, thankfully, and the latter are certainly eligible for a satirical poke or two from time to time.   In fact, South Park has already ripped those in terms more specific to my own Catholic faith in one episode, and while I disagreed with it, I didn’t think it fell outside the boundaries of social satire.  Also, we should note that David did do an episode poking fun at the burqas of Muslim women, which isn’t quite analogous to this episode, but went further than most other television shows would dare.

Conservatives who will get easily offended should probably ignore Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

When is one of these “Great Artists” going to pee on a Koran.

MB4 on October 29, 2009 at 6:03 PM

Yawn. Per the last part of your post, piss on a koran and I’ll give you credit for being edgy. This is just unimaginative.

BadgerHawk on October 29, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Well, we know the answer to the last question. Peeing on the Koran would actually take guts.

I think the only proper thing to do is to have a resident ‘expert”, take the video and substitute Mohammad’s picture for Jesus’ picture.
Re-post it on YouTube…

Another piece of trash out of Hollywood that I just don’t get.

I guess I’m too old to get it or something like that. A waste of bandwith AP.

Knucklehead on October 29, 2009 at 6:05 PM

People will trot out the fact that David jabbed at conservative Islam with the whole “burkha and a blind guy” episode a while back. But it’s apples and oranges to something offending Muhammed or even desecrating the Koran.

But as a Christian, Hollywood’s repeated blasphemy to all that I hold dear elicits a big “meh” from me. This is the best they’ve got? Gee, they’re offending Christians again! Shocker!

Pope Linus on October 29, 2009 at 6:05 PM

I don’t really care… but the first thought that came to my mind is something I couldn’t say unless I knew Medved had said it too..

For most American Jews, the core of their Jewish identity isn’t solidarity with Israel; it’s rejection of Christianity.

Try that on a Koran

William Amos on October 29, 2009 at 6:09 PM

Has Larry David ever done anything obscene in a Synogogue? Probably not, nor would he. That warrants respect. Which I have. So the lack of respect shown there, is all the more reason to boycott Hollyweird as much as one can.

I saw the clip last night, and won’t dignify it with another view. I’m not religous, but I do have respect for people of all faiths, and wouldn’t show disrespect, or blasphemy in any form.

So I’m assuming we’ll see some worldwide riots with hundreds dead. The networks will drop the show and mutter something about “hate speech.” The politicians will roundly condemn it.

Later, we’ll find Larry David in an ally with a knife in his chest.

Or am I thinking or something else?

TheUnrepentantGeek on October 29, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Larry David usually does stupid politically incorrect humor on his show. I am just tired of the Jesus bashing.
I saw the episode of Larry hooking up a blind man with a burqa-wearing woman. It was funny, but it was not an insulting episode to Muslims. It was complimentary to the Muslim woman.

Now urine on a Jesus painting? Liberals are so obsessed with throwing feces on religious icons, except Muslim icons.

I never understand the jewish vote

they deride GWB, a man that supports seriously Israel and among other acts refused to see Arafat much less give him accomadations in the lincoln bedroom

yet they love Clinton who does the reciprocol

they vote in figures matching the black vote in supporting the party that is home for agrieved radical murderous Muslims

if I was a cynic I might think that ultimately they do so since if you aren’t white and Christian you are therefore agrieved and should vote for the party that is determined to strip the most prosperous by numbers and per capita

the left is the party that wants to strip the white Christians of their wealth while not learning any of the reasons why they are so successful in the first place and why those ideals effected the rise of Europe and the US to such prominence

I’m not very religious but I don’t see any advantages that supposed progressives have over Christian based societies

remember too that these societies have been pretty inclusive to a level unmatched anywhere yet the result is to disrespect and rob the host

My guess is that before the filthy lying coward threw that ball in his mom jeans there was a whole lot of staffing about what he should wear.

pilamaye on October 29, 2009 at 6:48 PM

I found this clip offensive, just as I found Andre Serrano’s Piss Christ offensive.

Mr. Morrissey, has it occured to you that someone urinating on the likewise of Christ is offensive in and of itself irregardless of the actual punchline?

Conservatives who will get easily offended should probably ignore Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

On the contrary, the people who are saying this is no big deal ought to ignore all insults to Christ and Christianity from now on because if this doesn’t offend them then nothing should.

aengus on October 29, 2009 at 6:50 PM

First the Catholic League pushed Mel Gibson’s “Passion..” movie, which as a Jew I will definitely say pushed the same old tired stero-types and myths about Jews and Christians that have been so problematic. Second, I saw O’Reilly and Laura Ingraham pick this up. Larry David consistently does very disparaging routines about Jews and I never hear folks complaining about it. And O’Reilly has the bigot and racist Al Sharpton on his show, and Laura Ingraham put the Jew hater Pat Buchanan on all the time as if he is an honorable person; I guess this is a dividing line for Jews and Christians, but I don’t think it needs to be.

georgealbert on October 29, 2009 at 6:51 PM

I’m a Bible-believing Christian, and don’t really get the outrage. When I first heard about it, I thought he literally peed right on a picture of Jesus (which I’d be really upset about), but all it is is him peeing, a few sprinkles splashing up and hitting the picture/painting, and then him being afraid to wipe it off.

Fellow Christians, am I missing something? Is it just the fact that a scripted show would think of doing this that’s outrageous, or…?

B/c in real life, if some pee splashed up and hit a picture/painting, you actually might chuckle. And be horrified at the same time.

Maybe I’m missing the context, maybe I’m just retarded. I don’t know, help me out.

nickj116 on October 29, 2009 at 6:52 PM

I happened to watch this particular episode, however, and I don’t get the outrage — or at least don’t get a rational reason for it. I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails today saying that Larry David mocked Jesus, but pretty obviously, David mocked the people who see Jesus in their grilled cheese sandwiches and the like. There is a very large difference between the two, thankfully, and the latter are certainly eligible for a satirical poke or two from time to time.

I saw it too, and though I’m a Christian and I cringed a little, it just wasn’t that big a deal to me.

However, I have to wonder why Christians “who see Jesus in their grilled cheese sandwiches” are good joke fodder, but it’s hard (for me, at least) to think of others who would be similarly ridiculed for what we think are odd spiritual beliefs.

I could be wrong (and there are probably examples out there to prove me so), but Christians just seem to be fair game where others are not.

This was meant as an insult and I am not ashamed to say that I have taken it as one.
