Video: RomneyCare was never about lowering costs, says Mitt
posted at 8:45 pm on October 29, 2009 by Allahpundit
The problem with Romney’s account is that at the time he signed the bill, he was saying it would bring down health care costs. Specifically, in a triumphant April 2006 Wall Street Journal op-ed titled “Health Care for Everyone? We Found a Way,” Romney boasted: “Every uninsured citizen in Massachusetts will soon have affordable health insurance and the costs of health care will be reduced.” (Emphasis mine.)
Romney, for the most part, was able to avoid criticism for his Massachusetts health care plan in the 2008 Republican primaries. At the time, it was still too soon to evaluate the program with hard data and Republican primary voters weren’t really paying attention to the issue of health care. But now both things have changed — the legislation has proved disastrous for state finances, the cost of premiums, and doctors’ wait times. In addition, Republican voters have become more aware of health care policy issues. And Romney’s plan is basically the Baucus bill at the state level: a government mandate forcing individuals to purchase health insurance or pay a tax, and government subsidies to help individuals purchase government-designed insurance policies on a government-run exchange.
I’m not sure which is worse: Trying to control costs, failing, and then denying that you tried or not even trying in the first place. I assume he’s going to end up settling on some sort of “the communist Massachusetts legislature made me do it” line on RomneyCare ahead of the primaries, but if so, then he ought to settle on it soon and start hammering it. No more misstatements or weasel words; all that does is play into the perception that he talks out of both sides of his mouth. Just tout the plan as noble in its ambitions but ultimately doomed because he had to work within liberal parameters, which always produce wasteful boondoggles. In fact, he could weave that into a sweet stump speech for Republican candidates next year: Unless we have a Republican Congress, a Republican president in 2012 won’t be able to accomplish much. But even so, this is a major obstacle for him. Needless to say.

I like Romney as a candidate but the meme that was struck in 2008 will be hard to shed for him. Unless they’re the anti-Obama/Pelosi/Reid(assues re-election) then I don’t see the Repub. nominee getting much traction; another Dole ’96 situation if you will.

Yeah, no kidding.
Romney always sounds conservative in his TV ads, but when you look at his past actions you wonder whether this is the same guy. It’s just too hard to tell whether Romney would do the right thing under pressure from the left.
He’s sort of like George H.W. Bush; sounded good (“read my lips, No New Taxes”), but then he raised taxes when the left pressured him.

Mitt just has too much a greasy, used car salesman vibe about him. Which is too bad because I agree, right now at least, that he is the nominal front runner for 2012.

A patriot with his past experience would be singing from the mountaintops that this healthcare scam does not work, is a budget buster for government and major drain on the taxpayer. That it increases costs and ruins service. That it didn’t work in his state and will be a disaster nationally!
A politician would obviscate, spin, and try to lie his way out of responsibility, more concerned with his political future than that of the country and citizens!

My impression of Romney in 2008(and mind you, I did like him the most out of all the GOP frontrunners) was that he reminded me of the generic-looking President you always see in movies and TV shows. It’s really hard to get a read on exactly what he believes since he’s changed his mind so many times.
As for Romneycare, it’s gonna be a major hurdle for him in 2012. He’ll be fine on issues of economics which I’m certain will be relevant during the primaries, but Huckster, Steve Perry, and Palin will have a field day with the health care debacle in Massachusetts.

Rino Ranch
With all the moolah Sarah Palin is raking in lately, (book, lectures, donations,) she should fund a rino recovery project and call it something like Rino Ranch. Rino Ranch a fabulous rest ranch somewhere out west with plenty of fresh air and sunshine where Rinos like Romney, McCain, Gingrich and others could go and have a long rest, remember long forgotten conservative principles, and get their heads back on straight.

I just don’t trust Mitt or Huck with a Republican majority. Their records indicate that they would continue to grow government.
Since I think the Republicans will take back control of the House in 2010 and the Senate in 2012, I want a President that won’t abuse that majority. The only person I trust with that kind of majority, to make the severe and drastic cuts that government needs in order for us to prosper, is Sarah Palin.

*sigh*
It depends on what kind of “costs” one is talking about. If you have someone who is very poor and can not afford private insurance, this would allow them access health insurance so from their perspective it “lowered health insurance cost”.
If you are looking at it from an overall perspective, the “meta” cost, yeah, costs probably went up because you have introduced a layer of inefficiency by having the government involved.

I ALWAYS FIGURED THE BIG GUYS PROMISED HIM THE NOMINATION IN 2012
I think there have been some assurances given that if Mitt indeed ran in 2012, maintained his first-tier status and remained viable to beat Obama that he would be their first choice.
But I think these folks have not entirely liked what they have seen so far from Mitt, including Romneycare. Thus the move to give Pawlenty “a try-out” or to keep him in the bullpen if Mitt does falter between now and the 2012 primaries.
According to the CNN poll Mitt is currently 11 points behind Huckabee. He can’t allow Huck to get too far ahead.

From 1:00 through 1:32 he clarifies what he thinks it takes to lower health care costs NOW. They never tried to do that with Romney care.
I do not understand this unforced error. Even the slickest of politicians would see that the best policy is to stick to the truth.
Clearly an attempt at revisionist history here. Why? I have no clue. Maybe he misspoke? I suppose the case could be made that the issue is front and center today and makes the claim that they didn’t try to cut costs in 2006 because he didn’t do what he thinks they should do now.
That is about as much mental gymnastics as I can muster to explain this curious statement.

Mitt is really, at this point, out of the running.
Now – if ObamaCare becomes a great, much loved commodity by 2013 then yeah – maybe Mitt will have a shot as a “founding father” of Nationalized Health Care. But I gotta tell ya – I don’t see it happening.
In fact – I see the opposite. If ObamaCare passes – it doesn’t go into effect until 2013 and the Republicans will be running on a high octane “repeal it” platform. It will literally be dead center of all the issues and Mitt won’t be able to escape it. So I think he’s done.
But – if Mitt is serious – maybe he can pull off some bold and decisive tactic to prove he’s not an Ayatollah.
