Quotes of the day
posted at 10:42 pm on October 29, 2009 by Allahpundit
“‘In many ways, he’s sent from God,’ he joked in an interview, ‘because the world’s a mess.’
“But Sting is serious in his belief that Obama is the best leader to navigate the world’s problems. In an interview on Wednesday, the former Police frontman said that he spent some time with Obama and ‘found him to be very genuine, very present, clearly super-smart, and exactly what we need in the world.’…
“‘It’s aggressive and violent and full of fear,’ he said of the [conservative] backlash against Obama. ‘They don’t want change, they want things to feel the same because they feel safe there.’”
***
“They came of age during the great abundance, circa 1980-2008 (or 1950-2008, take your pick), and they don’t have the habit of worry. They talk about their ‘concerns’—they’re big on that word. But they’re not really concerned. They think America is the goose that lays the golden egg. Why not? She laid it in their laps. She laid it in grandpa’s lap.
“They don’t feel anxious, because they never had anything to be anxious about. They grew up in an America surrounded by phrases—’strongest nation in the world,’ ‘indispensable nation,’ ‘unipolar power,’ ‘highest standard of living’—and are not bright enough, or serious enough, to imagine that they can damage that, hurt it, even fatally.
“We are governed at all levels by America’s luckiest children, sons and daughters of the abundance, and they call themselves optimists but they’re not optimists—they’re unimaginative. They don’t have faith, they’ve just never been foreclosed on. They are stupid and they are callous, and they don’t mind it when people become disheartened. They don’t even notice.”

True, true… indisputable!
ya2daup on October 30, 2009 at 12:52 AM
I have no such power. I’m a single voter in a great Democracy.
But that’s it.
And this nonsense that anybody who disagrees with you is dangerous is really stupid talk, in my opinion.
People just have opinions. They even change them.
If you don’t respect people’s opinions and honestly think they are dangerous?
That’s opposite of Democracy.
We simply have no reason to entertain that kind of nonsensical thinking.
We believe that personal expression leads to a better society.
And those of you suggesting otherwise?
You’re not remotely supporting the basic principles of this country.
I’m sort of sick of dancing around that, btw.
I’m sick of conservatives suggesting otherwise.
AnninCA on October 30, 2009 at 12:52 AM
But honestly, how much influence does she have?
AnninCA on October 30, 2009 at 12:54 AM
You need to get over yourself in a very big way.
Jenfidel on October 30, 2009 at 12:54 AM
Anybody who rhymes “I walk” with “New York” is not to be trusted.
profitsbeard on October 30, 2009 at 12:55 AM
Come come now. Is anyone really surprised by what Mr. “de doo doo doo de da da da” has to say about Obama? These people are our dancing monkeys and nothing else. They are there for us to put a coin in there tin cup after they perform. Honestly I don’t want to hear if a famous person is a conservative either.
To his credit, in… ’92 (I think) I saw a Sting concert and he didn’t mention politics once. As a bonus, he played some Police songs. Which was good since I never got to see The Police. I couldn’t say the same for Phil Collins but I did eventually see a Genesis concert before they faded away, but I digress.
Now that Allap has established a dictionary-worthy example of a “know-nothing-know-it-all” we can get on to more important matters.
Best Sting song: Fortress Around Your Heart/All This Time (tie)
Worst Sting song: We’ll Be Together
Best Police Song: Can’t Stand Losing You
Worst Police Song: Miss Gradenko/Peanuts (tie) (PEE-Yoo! Might I add)
P.S. -The Tantric thing with his wife was apparently a hoax made up by Bob Geldoff’s daughter. If I cared, I’d try to get verification for you on that.
rihar on October 30, 2009 at 12:55 AM
Yes. Putting your life on the line, as I did, has a wonderful way of focusing you on the reality of the world.
BTW Your leftist arrogance is showing. I’ll put my life in the hands of one of our “ignorant” soldiers any day before I ever consider spitting on one of these effete leftist parasites who sit around carping and undermining their country while their betters are out defending it.
elduende on October 30, 2009 at 12:55 AM
The only ones trying to shut down discussion and the free exchange of ideas aren’t “conservatives,” but the NObama White House and his New World Order Hollywood enablers like Sting.
Jenfidel on October 30, 2009 at 12:56 AM
But honestly, how much influence does she have?
AnninCA on October 30, 2009 at 12:54 AM
Not just her but how about on a combined basis?
heshtesh on October 30, 2009 at 12:57 AM
You are a parasite carping about what you know nothing about. I do. Get over it.

Sting is just another leftist dingbat in show biz who thinks that Barry Hussein Obama is the Christ.

I’ve had those moments, too. But I find it ridiculous to suggest that means I understand world dynamics.
Sorry, I’m just a bit more humble. Funny you mention arrogance.
and, no, I’m not interested in sharing what those moments were.
I grew up with a WWII father. I definitely understand.
But even he never imagined that meant he understood or had all the answers.
AnninCA on October 30, 2009 at 12:59 AM
and off she flounces, as usual style
fullogas on October 30, 2009 at 12:59 AM
Yes it is. But just because I don’t agree with someone politically doesn’t mean I can’t recognize and appreciate their talent. If that were the case I’d never listen to music or watch movies because the politics of most musicians and actors is beneath contempt.
beachgirlusa on October 30, 2009 at 1:00 AM
I am not sure tricked is the right word.
It’s dangerous, though. It’s a bit like politics has become the god of some people.
Sad, eh?
AnninCA on October 30, 2009 at 1:00 AM
So why do you risk hurting yourself by trying to opine on that very subject?
*snort*
Somewhere between humility and arrogance, AnninCA flounders…
Promise?

Ann-in-a-Can’s passive aggressive way of hijacking a thread is truly amazing.

I thought that sounded like classic Noonan while I was reading it, but it just didn’t seem possible that she actually wrote it based on her recent opinions. If she has finally seen the light, good for her.

beachgirlusa on October 30, 2009 at 1:10 AM
I think you are exactly, precisely wrong. The opposite is true, but not specifically in regard to the armed forces, but more broadly. American’s want to inspire the world to freedom, liberty and justice for all, (a trait that most of us are very proud of), but for now they are more concerned about their own futures. Maybe that’s why Obama is doing his best to ensure that they continue to concern themselves with their own futures, even while he pretends to be doing something about it.
See, this is why I never engage with you. It’s useless to argue. You’re kind has always existed, and always will. “We’ll be fine if Nazi’s take over Europe.” Or, “We’ll be fine if the Soviets take over Europe.” Or, “We’ll be fine if suicidal terrorist regimes acquire nukes and/or other WMD’s and spread across the face of the earth and multiple.
I mean, what’s the point? Just stick your head back in the sand and everything will be fine! Why should I waste my vakyabke time trying to save you from yourself?

I’ve never understood some people who think it’s right to just sit back and watch terrible things happen, justifying that it’s OK because it isn’t happening to us.
I wiser man than I once said this:
What did we do to preserve the spirit of liberty when Iran started killing it’s own. What have we done to preserve the spirit of liberty in Honduras when Zelaya tried rewriting the constitution, or in Costa Rica which is now in the process of being overrun by the Chavistas? What kind of message are we sending the downtrodden in North Korea and Iran with our weakness?
And what seeds of despotism have been planted in our own home soil?
One thing that frustrates me to no end is a person who fails to see who his real friends and real enemies are. I’ve dealt with some pretty annoying people in my lifetime, but those types drive me straight up a wall.
Here we have a president who dithers on Afganistan and ignores Iran while declaring war on Fox News. Here we have a senate who stays moot trying to silence the Law Library of Congress about a Pro-Micheletti report out of Honduras while congress is trying to nationalize healthcare.
And we have people in this thread and in this nation who fail to see what’s happening around them!
Do people remember what kind of enemy we fought in the Cold War? Do people remember the evil empire that was Communism?
I’d go further, but I cannot.
Chaz706 on October 30, 2009 at 1:36 AM

Johan Klaus on October 30, 2009 at 1:39 AM
Earlier, I questioned the need to waste valuable internet space on Mr. Sting.
So…going OT…today I turned the volume to 0 and watched Barack’s head turn back-n-forth, back-n-forth, back-n-forth, while he read from the twin TOTUSes. Occasionally, the camera would do a side view, showing the TOTUSes and I noticed how very strange he looked…the leader of the free world completely unable to speak on his own accord. I wanted to laugh at how ridiculous he looked turning his head so often…as if he is fooling anyone. But I really found his teleprompter dependency to be both sad and frightening. Surely it has become a joke to other world leaders. Surely that joke is translating into America being a joke. That’s all…do,do,do and da,da,da.

For the life of me, Peggy, I cannot wrap my head around your inability to recognize this in yourself.
While I witnessed you being swept away by Obamian rhetoric like it was a moonlit dinner over the French Riviera, I was asking the same questions of you.

gary4205 on October 30, 2009 at 1:54 AM
I completely disagree with Noonan that Americans feel there is no way out (or no “path through,” as she says it). But I can see why she has to say it (aside from her unfortunate predeliction for melodrama). That is, because she cannot face the reality of leftism, and cannot face her own failure to identify it early in Obama. This is a problem or deficiency common to elitist “conservatives” (those more elite than conservative). Put simply, she blew it, and now needs to posit solemn, apocalyptic cul de sacs for the great American dream because she can’t comprehend the very simple and awful truth of Leftism (which in fact is very easy to fight if you know what you’re fighting, but poor Peggy hasn’t a clue).
I wasn’t listening to you then, Peggy, and I’m not listening now.

You’ll probably never notice this response as it is very late.
I never, ever watch him anymore; that is a given, mostly because all he does is lie, on top of lie, depending on the venue and I am nauseously sick of him. However, when he was still running for president, I vividly remember a video when he was struggling to get the crux of the matter, without TOTUS. There she was, his adoring wife, standing on the side-lines and and anxiously mouthing what he should be saying because he lost track of the subject was and had no clue on what to utter next. Very candid, indeed.

The hatred of Reagan in the GOP elites and the democratic party (BIRM) is to blame. The government stopped teaching about America. about the consitution, about personal responsibility, about the joys and sorrows of capitalism. They allows Hollywood to be taken over by marxists, they allowed the schools to be taken over by marxists, they embraced PC and multiculturalism instead of the truth and the melting pot in their thrist for powr.
Our leaders have failed us because they chaffed uder the limits placed on them by the consitution. They fell for the sugar candy to win votes. they understood it was easir to bribe then presuade.

What most people in the music industry, or in Hollywood, know about actual historical events and issues, could be put on the back of a matchbook. People like that grew up in an industry of make believe. Imagine this clown is talking about the last few generations as those living in excess. Of course that’s true, and it’s also what put bread on your table as fools spent that extra excess money buying your tapes & CDs and throwing money away at your once that you’ve made your pile of money, you can sit back like all the other aging musicians and actors and spout leftist propaganda and tell everyone how horrible they were for living in excess.

I like Sting’s music and acting. Whatever personal experience he has with America comes from interacting with his peers in show business. He describes them very well, indeed.

Hey Sting, I’m a recovering Liberal. My wife and I are poor, but we are working our butts off for our 2 young daughters. No one has handed us anything and we don’t want it. We know that with hard work we will come out of this. Yes, we are very concerned about the future for our kids.
Even though I was raised to be a Progressive like most other kids in my suburb, I eventually came to my senses a few years ago. Top-down egghead authoritarian social engineering does not work, even with the best intentions. It spreads misery, poverty & grievances. See: the recent housing boom & bust, the War on Poverty, etc.
Facts, data, history and reason have changed me from a Progressive to a conservative. Sting, you should try it sometime.
