Quotes of the day

posted at 10:42 pm on October 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

“‘In many ways, he’s sent from God,’ he joked in an interview, ‘because the world’s a mess.’

“But Sting is serious in his belief that Obama is the best leader to navigate the world’s problems. In an interview on Wednesday, the former Police frontman said that he spent some time with Obama and ‘found him to be very genuine, very present, clearly super-smart, and exactly what we need in the world.’…

“‘It’s aggressive and violent and full of fear,’ he said of the [conservative] backlash against Obama. ‘They don’t want change, they want things to feel the same because they feel safe there.’”

***
“They came of age during the great abundance, circa 1980-2008 (or 1950-2008, take your pick), and they don’t have the habit of worry. They talk about their ‘concerns’—they’re big on that word. But they’re not really concerned. They think America is the goose that lays the golden egg. Why not? She laid it in their laps. She laid it in grandpa’s lap.

“They don’t feel anxious, because they never had anything to be anxious about. They grew up in an America surrounded by phrases—’strongest nation in the world,’ ‘indispensable nation,’ ‘unipolar power,’ ‘highest standard of living’—and are not bright enough, or serious enough, to imagine that they can damage that, hurt it, even fatally.

“We are governed at all levels by America’s luckiest children, sons and daughters of the abundance, and they call themselves optimists but they’re not optimists—they’re unimaginative. They don’t have faith, they’ve just never been foreclosed on. They are stupid and they are callous, and they don’t mind it when people become disheartened. They don’t even notice.”

I lost an Uncle freeing this tool’s continent from the Nazis.

I was there when my cousin went off to Vietnam.

As a submariner – I was there when we played “chicken” with Soviet nuclear submarines during the cold war – to keep Europe (this tool’s homeland) free of Soviet domination.

I was there when me – and thousands of others went to war to free Kuwait – and to keep the oil lanes open for this tool’s country.

For ten years we enforced UN sanctions on Iraq.

When the British and French begged us – we led the way into Kosovo – a conflict we had not the slightest national interest in.

We lost 3,000 plus on 9-11 – innocent men, women, and children of all nationalities and creeds.

We sent our men and women into Afghanistan to take out AQ and the Taliban and give those people a shot at freedom.

We gave 25 million Iraqis a shot at freedom.

I lost many shipmates and friends in these conflicts.

And one century after Britain decided it would be great to have a state called Israel – we are the only western democracy that remains really to back it.

So Sting can go screw himself. I know men who took bullets in the chest in the mountains of Afghanistan that had more class in their fingertips than Sting ever had in his whole physical makeup.

So GORDOn, you think BHO is jus the ticket to “fix” all the world’s problems. Seventy years ago, another bunch of illiterate, uneducated sheep felt the same way about young Adolf.

If there is one thing history has taught us, it is that we should listen to whatever Europeans, and particularly European musicians, have to say about us. This is indisputable.

stldave on October 29, 2009 at 11:21 PM

What, we’re surprised by Sting’s statements? Anyone remember the rainforests? Why expend so much energy railing against someone whose thoughts you already know? So what.

Noonan on the other hand makes a few salient points. She’s reaching on her misty apotheosis of the current ruling class’s mentality, but she’s right in taking them down as callous and stupid and ignorant of their actions. You cannot do the things Obama and his cronies are doing without suffering the consequences – either of damaging the Republic or putting yourself out of a job. Let’s hope the latter is the one that sticks.

It’s time hippie politics was finally jettisoned into the sun.

Johnny 100 Pesos on October 29, 2009 at 11:26 PM

Peggy, the problem with America is not that we have raised a couple of generations of unrealistic, spoiled brats. That is not fatal. The problem we have is exactly what you live off of, that Americans all too often confuse mediocrity and stupidity for intelligence. That is the real killer, but then, you’d be out of a job without it.

heshtesh on October 29, 2009 at 11:27 PM

Americans are starting to think the problems we are facing cannot be solved.

Many cannot. Primarily due to the fact that we are almost guaranteed to simply misunderstand the nature of the problems we will come to face. Climate change? Maybe happening, maybe not. Maybe anthropomorphic, maybe not. Islamization of the west? Maybe deadly serious, maybe not. Maybe inevitable, maybe not. Elite discourse used to find consensus on issues after a while. Now its sending out at least 2 steady streams of information. We simply won’t know what hit us, whatever it is that finally hits us. 1/2 of the public will be insisting its all a lie till the very end.

Damn right we’re disheartened.

Forget any intelligent public discourse. Just the fact that Anthropogenic Catastrophic Global Warming was ever taken seriously says that our society is insane and gullible. Of course, after they got us to change everything for that illusory O-zone hole (that you never heard about again, though nothing really changed) the left thought they could pull any ridiculous scheme, and they just about have. They even got a total retard who hates America into the White House and a Congress full of useful idiots who are willing to trash everything for a few kicks.

I was 10 in 1980 and I can remember where I was that year when I first heard “Don’t Stand So Close To Me”. I have Sting’s Greatest Hits CD and I think that He-along with the late Robert Palmer-has the sexiest voice in music.
It’s just a shame that only his voice is sexy.

Perhaps Stink would like to enlighten us rubes as to what “change” his messiah offers that has not already failed elsewhere?

jdkchem on October 29, 2009 at 11:46 PM

The first decent piece I’ve read from Noonan in a long time, but she doesn’t go nearly far enough. The economy is only part of what concerns me, (and other’s I know), about the direction of the country. I’m much more concerned about freedom and liberty and the American way, our founding principles, which she doesn’t mention once.

And of course, Noonan helped bring America to out knees by supporting Obama even if she claims to have voted for McCain, which I don’t believe.
