Politico hit piece: Iowa group scrambling to meet Palin’s massive speaking fee

posted at 6:41 pm on October 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

One of our trolls demanded to know this morning why my Headline for this story was so different from Politico’s headline. Answer: Because their headline, like much of the story itself, was laughably misleading. In fact, rather than read me blathering about it, take five minutes and read it yourself (or at least this takedown of it) — being careful to note how long it takes them to mention that (a) Palin hasn’t demanded a fee, (b) Palin hasn’t done anything to suggest to the group that she’s interested in attending, and (c) the group itself says it’s raising money only to pay for a large venue in case she does decide to show. They wanted a story about a greedy diva who was looking to cash in on her political celebrity, and darn it, they were going to get it. Sample quotation from the fifth and sixth paragraphs of the story:

“If somebody tells me they want me to pay an appearance fee, it tells me they’re not very serious about running for president,” said Ed Failor, Jr., president of Iowans for Tax Relief and an influential GOP insider.

“I found it really, really odd,” Failor said.

If, if, the Iowa group that’s trying to get her to come really is raising money to pay her fee, then that’s an interesting story — not because it proves that Palin’s money-hungry but because it’d show that she’s in such hot demand that even grassroots organizations in Iowa are willing to offer her incentives to appear at their gigs.

So unfair is the Politico piece that it’s even being knocked by … Newsweek. Which, naturally, didn’t stop Matthews from running a segment about it tonight, omitting all the key details.

Actually hold that thought… I usually rag on Allah quite a bit.

Allah, you did a honest and great post. I (being a palinista) can say that this was probably one of the better ones I have read in a while.

Maybe it was because you were making fun of the troll… but either way it made me smile.

Sometimes I sit and wonder which side of the aisle has the more unending, unhealthy, and unjustified obsession with Palin.

Politico is a bunch of left-wing hack journalists, just like the rest of them.

Question: when is Hugh Hewitt going to nail Mike Allen on this kind of stuff on one of Allen’s regular call-ins to the show? Can’t wait to hear Allen’s stammering, but I don’t expect Hewitt to go after him.

I bet that SP is so used to the constant drama against her that if it was to suddenly stop she wouldnt know what to do with herself.

deepinthought on October 29, 2009 at 6:51 PM

Thanks for the clarification on the story AP.

hawkman on October 29, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Politicrap.

Palin is a very popular woman and she is picking and choosing her appearances wisely. She is not on TV every week doing an interview, or debating on a show. She is making herself a valuable person for the conservative movement and for herself in 2012.

cubachi on October 29, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Another effort to make Palin to appear to be a greedy, self-absorbed, self-centered, Narcissistic celebrity only interested in feathering her own nest.

I guess the Far Left must have gleaned the results of yesterday’s CNN poll that shows that 56% of respondents said that Palin “cares about the needs of others like you”.

So what this is an attempt is to make it appear that Palin is simply a selfish bitch, is a faux conservative and is only interested in making herself the most famous and richest woman of the world.

The CNN poll reveals too much of the truth about Palin. The results must not be allowed to linger in the public consciousness. Palin must be demonized. She must be made to appear, in the words of Keith Olbermann, the worst person in the world.

technopeasant on October 29, 2009 at 6:52 PM

They wanted a story about a greedy diva who was looking to cash in on her political celebrity, and darn it, they were going to get it.

I don’t have the resources of Allahpundit to prove this but, isn’t this pretty much the norm in the way the state-supported media pushes their agenda?

Truth and transparency AP. Good for you! Politico–ptui!!

jeanie on October 29, 2009 at 6:57 PM

It should be obvious, to the most casual observer, that Palin is a thorn in every liberals side. Politico can claim they aren’t partisan all they want; but when they come up with something like this, their protestations become pretty weak.

If Palin is soooooooo bad, just keep your mouth shut and let her dig a large hole and bury herself. The problem is that’s what’s really unlikely to happen, so the left has to attack, attack, attack. The politics of personal destruction, something Democrats are really good at.

bflat879 on October 29, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Hey AP, looks like you got a stay of execution tonight.

jimmy2shoes on October 29, 2009 at 6:58 PM

That sounds a lot better. Politico is going to end up on my sh@t list along with quiet a few others. They have been spending way too much time palling around with those terrorists at MSNBC!

joedoe on October 29, 2009 at 6:59 PM

If someone is willing to pay a fee for this said person to come, who are we to say said fee is TOO high? How much does said bho get for his glorious sheer presence getting off AF 1 coming to get with the little people get? After all, we taxpayers are paying for said bho to move anyplace in the world making money for said bho to keep going and going.

Now stop it. You’re going to win the World Series – just relax.

You’re just pissed that you can’t chant “nineteen eighteen” anymore.

So does common cause on Sarah Palin trump Red Sox – Yankee rivalry?

turfmann on October 29, 2009 at 7:01 PM

From Politico article:

There is no indication that the former governor has requested a fee or that her decision whether to attend is being influenced by whether she’ll be paid.

So this tempest in a teapot is based on Palins usual and customary fee, right? Heck, womens libbers should be pleased that Sarah (and Iowans) knows her worth.

Sarah isn’t automatically assumed to be willing to show up on the cheap, and that’s a good thing. In fact, it seems in Iowa, that’s actually, after reading the article in Politico, pretty extraordinary.

Good for Sarah.

jerrytbg on October 29, 2009 at 7:01 PM

This doesn’t surprise me one little bit. The progressive media has never let the facts get in the way of a good political hit piece about Palin in the past so why should it start now. The only difference now is that their attempts at smearing Palin have become so lame, obvious, and expected that all they end up doing by making them is highlighting to readers what partisan hacks they really are.

Hellrider on October 29, 2009 at 7:02 PM

I heard a rumor that Mike Allen was expelled from Washington and Lee University for cheating. The source is an unnamed classmate of Allen’s. Of course, there’s no proof of it anymore, but since Allen is such a cheater now, the rumor is not hard to believe.

And indeed, one has to read all the to the sixteenth paragraph to learn that IFPC spokesman Bryan English told Martin that the effort to raise money was only to secure a venue, pay for lighting and promote the event and that English was “not personally aware of a speaker’s fee.” And it’s not until the twenty-fourth paragraph that Martin admits:

“There is no indication that the former governor has requested a fee or that her decision whether to attend is being influenced by whether she’ll be paid.”

I’m shocked (shocked!) Politico didn’t accuse Palin of paying $800,000 to Get Out the Vote (ACORN) for lighting, then lie on the FEC forms…oh, wait; that was the Obama campaign.

Many have taken a jab at the reasoning …Here’s my take…
Charisma…while speaking the truth and connecting directly …and when she looks into the camera the intensity of that connection is undeniable…
note that many progressives say she has CRAZY eyes…
They’re zeroing in on the connection she has with many of us and it scares the hell out of em’…
So they try to make you think she’s a wacko…
and that criticism, for the most part, rolls right off her back…and just ups the ante, fun to watch…
Must be the moose grease… ;)

If she was liberal in her politics, her story of her climb up the political ladder as a self-made success story to become one of the few women Governors ever in these United States would be lauded and she would be held up as a paragon of virtue by the Democrats.

However, she committed the unforgivable crime of being a successful CONSERVATIVE woman. Not only that, she actually seems to be…dare I say it?…HAPPY!
