AP: Administration overstated stimulus jobs

posted at 8:48 am on October 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Two weeks ago, the Obama administration finally got around to documenting the number of jobs “saved or created” by Porkulus thus far … and came up with a whopping 30,083 jobs.  Even that, as it turns out, was greatly inflated.  The AP does the math that the White House was apparently too incompetent to do itself and discovers that 5,000 of those “saved or created” jobs were created, all right — out of someone’s imagination:

An early progress report on President Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan overstates by thousands the number of jobs created or saved through the stimulus program, a mistake that White House officials promise will be corrected in future reports.

The government’s first accounting of jobs tied to the $787 billion stimulus program claimed more than 30,000 positions paid for with recovery money. But that figure is overstated by least 5,000 jobs, according to an Associated Press review of a sample of stimulus contracts.

The AP review found some counts were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of jobs; some jobs credited to the stimulus program were counted two and sometimes more than four times; and other jobs were credited to stimulus spending when none was produced.

Read the AP’s specifics on how the numbers went askew.  My personal favorite?  A Florida day-care center claimed to have saved 129 jobs, but the stimulus money went instead to raises for all of its employees.  Do many day-care centers employ 129 people?  How difficult would it have been to double-check the payroll figures?  After all, the company has to report income to the IRS, doesn’t it?

The White House claimed that it has corrected “virtually all” of the errors the AP uncovered, as well as others they also found.  However, the Recovery.gov site still uses the 30,083 figure.  More numbers will come tomorrow, when states file their reports and more jobs “saved or created” get calculated.  Will White House math improve?

And this is almost an obligatory observation, but this display of carelessness and incompetence on numbers that already looked bad undermines any effort this administration makes in fiscal leadership.  Not that underestimating the ten-year deficit growth by over 22% (and over two trillion dollars) didn’t already make that case, but those are numbers so large that most people don’t feel a rational connection to them.  On the other hand, anyone working for a living understands the difference betwen 25,000 and 30,000.  This White House obviously doesn’t.

Blowback

The AP has been Obama’s biggest cheerleader in this whole health care debate. Blind devotion at best.

If the AP is already criticizing Obama, this administration is in trouble. Maybe Obama’s next war against the media will be against the AP.

Of course, it would be simple to tell the truth. . . that way he could stay out of trouble. But I doubt we’ll hear anything truthful from them until they get out of the whitehouse.

If you don’t wanna click the link, the headline says the following:

“Economy grows at a 3.5 percent pace in the third quarter, the best showing in two years, fueled by government-supported spending on cars, homes.”

So basically the government artificially stimlulated the economy with Cash For Clunkers and the $8000 first-time homebuyers tax credit. Which means now that those subsidies have expired, what will happen to the economy?

It just might be that “they” — Barack Obama, Valerie Jarrett, Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod, + Czars — do not know what they’re doing. They just may not be all that expert at anything except conning people out of votes and otherwise, upsetting vulnerable people on an emotional level.

I have little doubts remaining that Barack Obama is NOT that “Constitutional scholar” he’s sold himself as. Likely, that, too, is another aspect of that connery — it seems that there may be more Big Wig Liberals loitering among Harvard and other Leftwing educational pools who are promoted more along the lines of personality than what they actually know intellectually and academically.

After hearing many of, for example, Big Wig Cass Sunstein’s ideas, in that regard, I strongly doubt that whoever it is who has told him he’s so smart most of his academic life knows what they’re talking about, either. Sunstein certainly doesn’t.

The Obama Crew speaks volumes about just how people can gain “power and influence” over others by not actually being able to manage or produce much of anything, other than a lot of opinions.

Dear Liar has now admitted that His stimulus only created/saved 30,000 jobs and now that 17% of that is false. This is not mere incompetence, it is an outright lie that depends upon the MSM being complicit in the lie.

What is worse, an administration that is incompetent enough to only save/create a few jobs and get its math wrong, or one that knows it isn’t helping the economy but expects the media to follow its lead anyhow.

The first path leads to Carter. The second leads to Mussolini.

No low pressure throne built by Kohler is going to work for Gibbs

Everyone can relax now, the Propaganda Dept has released today that the recession is officially over. No doubt another Nobel prize in the making. Now the socialist can re-stock their cubbards with Kool-aid again.

Octavia on October 29, 2009 at 10:11 AM

I’d call the Administration “clowns”, but that would be an insult to clowns everywhere…

Same with “morons”…

Khun Joe on October 29, 2009 at 10:13 AM

They ARE adding tens of thousands of jobs; non-productive, wasteful government jobs that bleed the taxpayers of their hard-earned pay. It is just “spreading the wealth around.”

Here’s what I think about it… GDP Is….. Better Than Expected?.

Morons, start doing research and learn math before saying “Mission Accomplished.”

Moms Increasingly Going Back to Work in Recession

OmahaConservative on October 29, 2009 at 10:19 AM

My Houston Chronicle dutifully reports the economy grew at a 3.5% rate in the last quarter. How about a couple of money quotes: \”The gain in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the economy, “largely reflected” an increase in purchases of automobiles attributable to the administration’s “cash-for-clunkers” plan, the report said.\”“It’s going to be a little bit challenging for the consumer this quarter.” Translation, we borrowed our way to growth, now we have nothing left.

From the AP report, it seems like these “stimulus” recipients lied and defrauded the government. Where’s Sheriff Biden on this abuse? I thought no one messes with Joe?

And the jobs?

Where are they?

Remember when GOBAMA and Biden the Economic/Military Scholar predicted MILLIONS of jobs would be created AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THEIR PORKULUS BILL by the end of the summer?

What happened?

Obamanomics happened.

Here’s the O-bot’s noew “economic” propaganda paradigm, all:

5.8% unemployment under Bush/Clinton = Horrible “jobless recovery”
9.8% unemployment under Obama with no sustained job growth observed at all = Happy Days Are Here Again!
