CNN poll: 71% say Palin’s unqualified to be president

posted at 4:14 pm on October 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

I was planning to skip this, but Conservatives 4 Palin promised their readers this morning that the “deeply tiresome Allahpundit” would be launching into an anti-Palin tirade about it any minute over at Hot Air.

How could I let them down?

Republicans appear split, with 52 percent saying she’s qualified and 47 percent disagreeing with that view.

The poll indicates that about half of the country, 51 percent, has an unfavorable view of Palin, with 42 percent seeing her in a positive light. Nearly two-thirds of those questioned say Palin’s not a typical politician, and feel she’s a good role model for women. Fifty-six percent add that Palin cares about people, and a similar amount think she’s honest and trustworthy. But the survey indicates Americans are split over whether Palin shares their values, agrees with them on the issues, or if she’s a strong leader.

“Sarah Palin has one advantage that many past Republican candidates have not shared – Americans think she cares about people like them,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “But her biggest Achilles heel is the number who think she is not qualified to be President. Those numbers are similar to what Dan Quayle got in 1993, when only 23 percent thought he was ready for the White House.”

C4P notes that, at 42/51, her approval rating’s up three points since the last CNN poll; in fact, if you use that PPP poll from last week as a yardstick, it’s actually up six points. An early sign of a rebound in her favorables as the book builds buzz, perhaps? As also noted by C4P, she’s got great personal numbers:

cnn-sp

The left might despise her but most of America doesn’t — which makes that 71 percent figure all the more jarring. Note, too, that she’s +29 on the question of whether she’s a good role model for women, which is fascinating given that she typically polls badly with women overall. The public clearly admires her, and rightly so, but there’s also clearly a deep, deep vein of skepticism about her qualifications if they’re cracking 70 percent on the presidential question while giving her a solid thumbs up on personal attributes. (Note that, at 52/47, even the split among Republicans on whether she’s qualified is within the margin of error.) As for C4P’s lament about CNN finding the headline it wanted to find within the data, are they really arguing that a three-point gain in favorables should have been the lede for this story rather than the fact that last year’s GOP VP nominee — and current darling of the conservative base — isn’t far from having three-quarters of the population declaring her unqualified? That’s a striking amount of consensus in an age when consensus is hard to come by.

While we’re on the subject, here’s the video of America’s father/parasite of the year telling CBS he has “huge” dirt on his son’s grandmother but isn’t ready to use it to destroy his extended family just yet. You’ll be pleased to know that Sarahcuda issued a statement laying him out this afternoon. The takeaway line: “Consider the source of the most recent attention-getting lies – those who would sell their body for money reflect a desperate need for attention and are likely to say and do anything for even more attention.”

I’d like to see the poll results for “Is Obama unqualified to be president?”

It’s probably in that same range, if not higher, having seen him on the job for the better part of a year.

I am pretty sure she will not be a contender for the top spot in the 2012 elections, but it appears she may run and she has a roll to play and it will be a positive one (I predict).

Mr. Joe on October 28, 2009 at 4:17 PM

Heart-ache or tented pants? Hmmmmmmm

I ask again how many of those 71% could cite the qualifications to become president in the Constitution?

can someone please point to where Palin is running for president?

Ris4victory on October 28, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Let’s see…

They LIKE HER

Think she’s HONEST AND TRUSTWORTHY

Her favorability is BETTER NOW than it was than when she was governor

But she is viewed as UNQUALIFIED

of the 4 problems to have, fixing ‘qualifications’ is pretty easy:

1. speeches
2. interviews
3. policy papers
4. trips abroad
5. a couple more books
6. railing against a pet issue
7. declaring for the gop nomination on the heels on some rino’s jumping in
8. doing well in teh gop debates

I honestly think if sarah just started going on msnbc once a week in 2010 and fighting, arguing, she’d be a shoo-in come 2012.

It’s easy to fix ‘qualified’ (see obama, bill clinton, carter, reagan, etc.)

It’s not easy to fix “likeable” (see hillary — took fake tears in new hampshire and swilling beer in ohio to get people to like her)

battleoflepanto1571 on October 28, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Keep humpin that chicken

faraway on October 28, 2009 at 4:20 PM

I still like her but I think leaving the Governor’s office in AK hurts her. I’m willing to entertain theories about how that pays off eventually, but in the meantime one should expect this sort of polling result.

DrSteve on October 28, 2009 at 4:20 PM

The headline of today’s CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll will undoubtedly give the deeply tiresome Allapundit the excuse he’s looking for to launch into another one of his “moderate” anti-Palin tirades (I know, it hasn’t been published yet, but I’m pretty confident he’s typing one out as we speak).

Don’t worry AP. You know you are dangerous when they start attacking you! ;)

sammypants on October 28, 2009 at 4:20 PM

America is getting what they DID vote for.

Cash for Clunkers….24,000.00 each clunker
Drill for Oil in Brazil…….billions
Where is the TARP money
Where is the STIMULUS MONEY
Where are the jobs
Gitmo to our shores
Money to the terrorists. Urghus (sp) spring vacation
Bring Gaza terrorists to our shores
These are just a few great outcomes of the American Vote.

nondhimmie on October 28, 2009 at 4:21 PM

They probably polled those people waiting in line to get “Obama money” which doesn’t come from taxpayers; Obama magically has it in his “stash.”

Allahpundit on October 28, 2009 at 4:21 PM

Let’s ask Hoffman in NY-23 what he thinks about her “favorability rating” on Wednesday.

Doorgunner on October 28, 2009 at 4:21 PM

Clearly Palin has a unique ability to unite America. Unfortunately, not in a way she would have liked.

Just as interesting, actually, is that the 49-49 split on “Shares your values;” the 48-51 deficit on “Agrees with you on issues you care about;” and 47-51 deficit on “strong and decisive leader.”

She’s got some work to do, but the book tour will certainly lift these numbers in the short term.

Bleeds Blue on October 28, 2009 at 4:22 PM

Levi Johnston can only smear Palin WITH THE HELP OF the mainstream media.

If the mainstream media does that then you can expect to see CBS and the other networks fall behind FoxNEWS in the ratings.

Then again, that will probably happen anyways.

JaqobJackson on October 28, 2009 at 4:22 PM

Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton both had political careers pronounced dead before they became President.
Churchill was considered washed up and a loose cannon in 1938.
Circumstances of history trumps all- just ask Congressman Hoffman next week.

!!Allah, serious question:

if someone forced you to choose between the 2012 prospective gop candidates based on your opinion of them TODAY, who would you choose? (palin, mitt, huck, pawlenty, heck even thune, huntsman, newt, cheney, daniels, perry, jindal…)

if you HAD to choose today, who would it be?

just curious.

battleoflepanto1571 on October 28, 2009 at 4:22 PM

Do we really need to keep seeing these polls? We get it. The public doesn’t think she’s qualified to be President. You know what? I admire the woman and would love to see her run in 2012, but even I have serious doubts about her ability to lead. I’m not saying I don’t think she’d be a good or even great commander-in-chief. I’m just saying I don’t know.

But that’s what campaigns are for. To show whether or not a candidate possesses the qualifications and demeanor to be the leader of the free world. Palin will have to pass that test should she choose to run.

Doughboy on October 28, 2009 at 4:23 PM

Look, she is not qualified imo, even though she seems like a good conservative. After Obama, do we need someone with very limited governing/executive experience? Obama is a leftist, but he is also showing that lack of experience can completely derail an agenda (fortunately in this case).

If we get a conservative into the White House in 2012, we need someone with strong experience because there will be a lot to undo.

The Palinistas should be looking beyond 2012. Palin has been thoroughly poisoned (unfair but true) by the MSM, and that will take a while to wear off (if ever). Plus, she needs a much better command of policies.

Clark1 on October 28, 2009 at 4:23 PM

Terrific

geckomon on October 28, 2009 at 4:23 PM

Oh she’s plenty qualified.

The socialist muppet in the WH is the definition of unqualified.

I expect CNN’s sample group consisted of the Taliban, the Hollywood Establishment, and the Dixie Chicks with a smattering of kos kidz.

Anders on October 28, 2009 at 4:24 PM

It’s clear that most conservatives like Sarah very much. I have to agree that she’s not qualified to be President. Romney is probably the most qualified Republican followed by Thompson, Gingrich, Gulliani, Pawlenty and Huckabee in my opinion.

To be fair, Palin had more executive experience running the wasilla elementary PTA than obama has EVER. he’s a career LEGISLATOR.

palin was: mayor, oil&gas commissioner, lost lt gov, gov

alaska DOES has a small population, but its still executive expeerience.

most of the gop nominees DO have it. huck and mitt were governors, so is jindal, perry, etc.

the gop equivalent would be a much younger john mccain. perhaps lindsey graham? of course graham had some leadership in the military, so i dont know.

Doorgunner on October 28, 2009 at 4:27 PM

This just isn’t at all surprising to me. Obama’s floundering, so people are starting to see how stupid it was to elect someone with so little experience, and instead of gaining ground, Palin lost it by quitting her job, which whether you agree with her decision or not, it obviously doesn’t add to her qualifications.

That people still like her, is actually very hopeful. I’ve been saying for some time that I don’t think she has any hope in 2012, but I’m not convinced she’s aiming for 2012. The only main issue against her really seems to be her experience, and that’s something she can only improve on. There’s no going back at this point.

It’s a trick question. Nobody is qualified to be president. You have to go out on a limb to say anyone is ready for the job. So someone not up to it always has to muddle through. It’s only meaningful if you compare various candidates in the same poll. CNN launched a transparent political hit by a hostile news organization by selecting Palin, and only Palin for the poll. Now they hope the persuasive power of the poll itself will change some minds.

oldernwiser on October 28, 2009 at 4:30 PM

Believe me, 2012 is going to be an ABO (Anybody but Obama) race, which will free up the Rs to select whomever they want.

Hence, Sarah has plenty of time to assuage any qualifications concerns, if she wants. And, unlike the other potentials that are out there now, she’s best when she attacks.

And, the voters are gonna want to see a full-fledged attack on Obama and his policies come 2012.

as to the 71% it matches NObama’s unqualified ranking at the same point in NObama’s campaign and it matches those currently who think NObama’s STILL unqualified to be POTUS.

mathewsjw on October 28, 2009 at 4:31 PM

Gee AP you really hate Palin, don’tcha? You have to go as far as using a CNN poll? Jeepers. CNN is lower than worm poo and their polls are worth about as much as worm poo.

Palin is very well qualified for President. Way better qualified than the current clown and his predecessor.

dogsoldier on October 28, 2009 at 4:31 PM

polling Sarah Palin’s qualifications is very important and will reverse current national malaise, double digit unemployment, failures abroad and in the war theater

I hate to break it to you patriotic 29%ers but ‘unqualified’ is a euphamism for ‘incompetent’ which really means ‘dumb as hell’. Good luck rising above ‘dumb as hell’.

AP says he wasn’t going to run it. I say what Joe Wilson said, when he was right on the money.

Allahdouche.

If you don’t see me on the Sunday football thread, you know this tool banned me.

Heh. A few weeks ago, some commenter wrote something to the effect of, “This is the first post you’ve written in months, AP, where I didn’t want you to put a shotgun in your mouth.” I didn’t ban him, so I think you’re safe.

I LOVE Palin and would vote for her as President any day over the field we have, BUT I would also like to see her in a cabinet position or something to that effect so that the general populace can see what she can do and gain a little more faith in her. Granted, this would be the same populace who put their faith in part-time Senator B. H. Obama, but after he runs this country into the ground, they may not want to make that “experience” argument the forefront of the campaign anymore.

XWing5 on October 28, 2009 at 4:33 PM

all her negatives are known, and she’s only down by 10-12 in a hypothetical matchup with obama. she CANT GET WORSE.

That is a good point. When it comes to skeletons in the closet hers are pretty much all out there. Her trash will all be known and forgotten by election time, hopefully.

sammypants on October 28, 2009 at 4:33 PM

NO! That’s what Obama claimed – that running a campaign was in-and-of-itself sufficient to demonstrate experience and meddle.

Clark1 on October 28, 2009 at 4:25 PM

I wasn’t referring to the ability to run a campaign. I meant that she has to show she has a command of the issues. She does that and she can win the nomination and general election in a walk.

Say what you will about Obama, but he could memorize lines and read off a teleprompter like nobody’s business. Couple that with a sycophantic media and an inept challenger like McCain and it’s no wonder that 52% of the American people bought into the premise that he’d be a competent President.

Doughboy on October 28, 2009 at 4:33 PM

Amazing how even with her unfavorables SHE can say, “I support so-and-so…” and all those other FAVORABLE guys starting jumping. BTW~ What are Pres. Obama’s favorable/unfavorables or former VP Dick Cheney’s favorable/unfavorables? Do we all of a sudden stop listening to Dick Cheney and say he, “eats Jewish babies…” because of his number and start supporting Pres. Obama? I prefer to listen to what’s right not what’s most popular.

I for one don’t want my favorite web site to be a cocooned echo chamber. If people can’t handle a little dose of reality, or even a brief shot of liberal perspective, that’s their own failing.

I like all of AP’s posts, even when they are from that dirtbag Frum.

Clark1 on October 28, 2009 at 4:34 PM

Oh, please, just keep believing these polls, and continue with your tirades. But when the time comes, will you let us know how you like the taste of crow?

mybcjazz on October 28, 2009 at 4:34 PM

I ask again how many of those 71% could cite the qualifications to become president in the Constitution?

SouthernGent on October 28, 2009 at 4:18 PM

You know very well that’s not what they mean by “qualified”. By that standard, a great majority of American citizens are qualified to be the President.

Maybe instead of the matter of qualification, they should’ve asked about the public’s confidence in her competency (in general or some specific issues), although the way I feel, when it really comes down to it, it’s not even the competency that matters: what should matter most is the candidate’s attitude towards our own Constitution—does he think it needs a major reconstructive surgery, or will he be serious about his oath to defend it against all enemies?

He was ragging on AP for having a psuedonym. Attacking someone anonymously for attacking people anonymously would be practically the dictionary definition of hypocrisy. What the hell.

To the AP Haters – Like frankj mentioned, you guys are gonna be pissed that AP isn’t blowing smoke up your asses? Are you retarded? You do realize that overestimating and underestimating are both equally harmful right? After the convention, everyone overestimated Palin – and what happened? She bombed. Why? Lack of prep. Why? Because they overestimated her!

If you actually wanted her to be politically successful instead of just fufilling a role in your fantasies, you’d be actually pointing out her flaws so she can fix-wait, nevermind, AP has said this all like a dozen times before.

apollyonbob on October 28, 2009 at 4:34 PM

Only someone so desperate would run with CNN poll 3 years out. Not just childish but stupid!
