What if Bush had done it?
posted at 3:00 pm on October 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Perhaps the American media has begun to awaken from their self-imposed trance over the election of Barack Obama. Politico’s Josh Gerstein figures that moment cannot come too soon, although he also notes that they have a great deal of self-interest in staying asleep. He asks whether a series of actions by George Bush would have received the collective yawn they got from the media when Obama took them, or a feeding frenzy by journalists instead (via Mediate):
A four-hour stop in New Orleans, on his way to a $3 million fundraiser.
Snubbing the Dalai Lama.
Signing off on a secret deal with drug makers.
Freezing out a TV network.
Doing more fundraisers than the last president. More golf, too.
Some of these we can answer. When the Bush administration — specifically VP Dick Cheney — met with energy producers in confidential advisory groups to promulgate their energy policy, both the media and the Democrats went ballistic. In fact, the latter sued to get the names of the attendees made public despite the fact that the administration is ultimately responsible for their policies.
Some of them require more speculation. For instance, George Bush never tried freezing out a network or publicly labeling it as an illegitimate news organization. Had he done so, perhaps with MS-NBC, the rest of the media industry would have risen in righteous indignation to demand an end to it. In the present case, the broadcast nets did finally push back against the White House, but only in one specific instance, and for the most part have focused on whether Obama and his team are right about their assessment of Fox than in the chilling impact of having a President demand that other journalists ignore Fox.
Had Bush snubbed the Dalai Lama, the media would have ripped him for deprioritizing human rights and ignoring a man of peace. That would have been an overreaction; the media probably got it more right than not with Obama’s postponement of their meeting, but it’s doubtful they would have given Bush that benefit of the doubt.
What does this mean? The American media is biased? We may as well report that water is wet, but Gerstein has a better point to make:
But others say there’s a larger phenomenon at work — in the story line the media wrote about Obama’s presidency. For Bush, the theme was that of a Big Business Republican who rode the family name to the White House, so stories about secret energy meetings and a certain laziness, intellectual and otherwise, fit neatly into the theme, to be replayed over and over again.
Obama’s story line was more positive from the start: historic newcomer coming to shake up Washington. So the negatives that sprung up around Obama — like a sense that he was more flash than substance — track what negative coverage he’s received, captured in a recent “Saturday Night Live” skit that made fun of his lack of accomplishments in office.
In other words, the press has a story line that they have to defend. If Obama gets exposed as a flop, and worse as a typical Chicago pol, then it makes their failure to properly vet Obama during the primaries that much more clear. In a sense, they created Obama, and his collapse would be their collapse as well.

What if Bush had done it? According to the libs, the very gates of hell would have opened and swallowed us whole, all the while Satan crowns his favorite buddy, Bush.
Seriously, it’s amazing the double standard that exists and the American people who willfully allow it.
I keep hoping people will wake up, but based on this guy’s continuing high personal approval ratings, I have my doubts. It’s kind of pathetic if you think about it.

If nothing else, the liberals are making a list and checking it twice of Obama’s “transgressions” to hold over his head if he eventually decides to follow Clinton’s lead and triangulate right to win re-election in 2012.

No, not that, but some may have noticed the plunging newspaper data, the recent flirtation with libel lawsuits, CNN’s recent ratings, the contest in NY-23, the Virginia gubernatorial race, and the realization that excuses for this administration in the areas of the economy and mid-East/war policy are starting to run a bit thin.
Maybe.

The media at large with the exception of Fox does not care. They are philosophically and politically Democrats with no diversity of views in their newsrooms and organizations. They will only learn when their ratings are 50% of what they are right now, maybe. And even then they will begrudgingly accept the fact that they need to change.

The media folk will never admit they were wrong. If (when) they turn on Obama, the story line will be about how he didn’t live up to expectations instead of how the media never bothered to establish realistic expectations of a far-leftist, inexperienced, and statist candidate.
If the media apologizes, it will be on Page 23, near the bottom corner.

Duh. That’s what we’ve all been saying. The media cannot allow him to fail. Or more specifically, they can’t allow him to be perceived as a failure.
This is why a horrible economy is constantly being described as being in recovery. Why trillion dollar deficits are suddenly not so bad. Why death tolls of 14 and 8 soldiers in a single day in Afghanistan are downplayed. Why it’s now un-American and unpatriotic to question our leaders.
Ironically, the media is only making matters worse. Obama IS a failure. The only question remaining is how big. What they’re ensuring is that his destruction of the Democrat Party and the liberal agenda will extend to the entire mainstream media. If you think FoxNews is big now, wait a couple more years.

Perino: “Towards the End We Didnt Do a Lot With MSNBC”
I had a lefty bring this up when we were talking about this. I had not seen this video, so I couldn’t respond. Now that I see it, she does say “towards the end” which means it took them nearly eight years of abuse to push them away as opposed to Obama doing it right out of the chute. Also, not doing “a lot” is different than “doing absolutely nothing” with a news organization.

I don’t know if that’s the best way to put it. More like, they wanted him, and they’ll overlook just about anything because they still want him. They’re only really confronted with his faults when they’re being honest with themselves.
Which is roughly never.

kingsjester on October 27, 2009 at 3:37 PM
Wouldn’t that be comparing apples and oranges, even if true. MSNBC is just a news channel, and part of a much bigger news organization. Even if the Bush administration completely shut out MSNBC — and I don’t think they did — NBC News and CNBC would still have been getting news updates from the White House, and MSNBC would have been getting news through them.
Remember who is in the White House media pool: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and Fox. MSNBC isn’t in there, because it’s not the same level of news organization. It’s represented by NBC News. So ignoring MSNBC entirely would still not be the equivalent of shutting out Fox News.

Everyone lately is on him about how much he spent(I’ve been guilty), and lately I’ve been thinking that’s how he got Dems to vote for military spending, by throwing them bones. Sad we had to wreck an economy to defend ourselves because of Democratic Party games.

NoDonkey on October 27, 2009 at 4:00 PM
The larger point here is that the media no longer “reports” anything; they simply spin, and any story can be spun any way to fit a political agenda. When a Republican is in the White House, their spin is negative. Always. In every case. When a democrat is in the White House, their spin is positive. Always. In every case. Why? Because better than 95% of the “journalists” are democrats. It’s really that simple.
It’s kinda silly to ask “What if Bush had done it.” Every one knows the answer to that. The spin would be for maximum damage to Bush, just as the spin now is for maximum benefit to Obama and his far-left agenda. That is what democrat reporters do — and for the most part, they’re all democrats.
I mean, geez, they managed to spin “Obama spends about 400% more time golfing than Bush did” to “Obama took a woman golfing — isn’t he cool!”
I guess the only news here is that their spin in favor of the democrats is now so in-our-face, so shameless and propagandized, that the media have become a parody of themselves. For many of us, though, they always were.
