Video: Shep Smith apologizes for Fox’s lack of balance

posted at 9:26 pm on October 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

Did anyone see this live? HuffPo and Weasel Zippers picked it up but I’m having a hard time believing the video edit didn’t omit some important detail. Is this really how it happened? If so, what exactly is Shep’s problem? Does “fair and balanced” now mean interviewing both candidates at the same time? If Carl Cameron nabs an interview with Harry Reid about the public option, I’m pretty sure he’s not required to go sprinting down the hall to make sure he gets some comment from Mitch McConnell before the bit airs. And given the left’s demagoguery of Fox, how do we know that Corzine isn’t boycotting the channel altogether? Are Republicans now personae non grata if their Democratic counterparts unilaterally decide that FNC isn’t worth their time? What’s this about, seriously?

Shep? WTF? Wouldn’t have allowed what to happen? So if Corzine says “no” to an interview, you’re simply going to refuse to interview the Republican as well?

Are you f-ing retarded?

…. well, maybe he was being sarcastic. I don’t watch him enough to be able to tell – sure came across as straight-up, but I should give him the benefit of the doubt, I suppose.

Midas on October 28, 2009 at 12:23 AM

how do we know that Corzine isn’t boycotting the channel altogether?

Corzine was on the local Fox station here in NYC and Christie was on Fox News in the morning and they kept saying “We asked Corzine to come on but he refused”

Corzine is going to stay away from Fox News because they may ask him a tough question about how he ruined so much in our state. While on Fox 5 they’re going to give both guys an easy go at it.

Granted I’m sure Shep would like to see Corzine get a win so he and the other Obama backers feel like they got a big win.

Rbastid on October 28, 2009 at 12:29 AM

After watching it again on here, seems the same as it did live, but Shep acted like a major D-Bag.

They got an interview and Shep acted like “OMG How could we do such a thing” really seems like trying to one up your fellow anchors.

Rbastid on October 28, 2009 at 12:30 AM

That you agree with his politics…well fine…’SillyRyno’…not that nobody could have guessed.

yes that must be it, because I thought Shep was justified in being angry about Katrina that makes me some kind of troll. And I don’t remember him spouting out Democratic talking points (I only recall his appearance on Hannity and Colmes), just him being angry about people having no water and old people having no meds, which is something I witnessed personally when I was down there with the Nat Guard. It was sickening.

I can’t stand it when people like you try and call out someone on hotair because they disagree with you on a certain issue. Forget that I’ve been posting on this site since it first went online. I disagree with you so that makes me some kind of HuffPo reading KOS kid?

child please.

SillyRyno on October 28, 2009 at 12:40 AM

It’s not enough that Fox News has Fox & Friends, Megyn Kelly, Jon Scott, Neil Cavuto, Glenn Beck, the Special Report panel, Bill O’Reilly (most of the time), Sean Hannity and all of Greta’s guests. I demand that Fox News have a conservative on at 3pm and 7pm as well.

YYZ on October 28, 2009 at 12:43 AM

Work for CNN Shep! You don’t know how good you’ve got it!

Chaz706 on October 28, 2009 at 12:48 AM

What it’s about is that you, and just about everybody in the world, has more brain power than Shep Smith.

FloatingRock on October 28, 2009 at 12:57 AM

Maybe Shep’s got sand in his v@gina because so many people want Beck to get Shep’s 7pm slot… maybe he’s weighing his options for a move to another channel. Whatev. I stopped caring what Shep thinks/does when he did his “Katrina bridge scene”. And who can bear to listen to his constant mispronunciations and reading mistakes? I’d rather watch reruns of “My Mother the Car”.

NightmareOnKStreet on October 28, 2009 at 1:07 AM

What a complete JERK, if I was that reporter I would be pissed. He made it look like she was intentionally distorting the story by only interviewing one candidate. He owes her an apology, she got an interview for herself from a willing candidate while the other avoids the network and Shep calls her out for not being balanced? I don’t what his intentions were in his warped and convoluted mind, he owed her an apology.

If Shep wants to be something other than Conservative, that is fine, but don’t be a straight up jerk. You wouldn’t have an audience if you were on any other station you moron, you would have Anderson Cooper numbers. I think it’s time for the Fox Report to go anyways. Shep can stay on at 3:00 but Fox could do much better at 7:00pm. Shep isn’t even a real journalist, he just reads off the teleprompter all day, it is all he does.

Daemonocracy on October 28, 2009 at 1:12 AM

However there is no one and I mean no one that can carry a live fast paced news story like Shep. He is funny, quick on his feet and keeps the viewer on edge. The guys is good at just reporting the news….

flash044 on October 27, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Uh no he’s not good at reporting the news. First time I saw him, I couldn’t believe how many times he stumbles over his words. Each time I see him on, its the same thing, stumbling over words. He is not the best news reader, no.

As for it being sarcasm? well, I’m confused really. Why make it look like Shannon Bream didn’t do things right? That’s how it came across to me. I’ve seen his sarcasm before and he’s actually made me chuckle, but this didn’t look like that.

It’s official…Shepard ‘eye makeup’ Smith has officially become full-fledged retarded.

God, I wish I were in that reporter’s shoes…I would have told him how idiotic he sounded with his inane statement. “Oh didn’t ya know, Shep, Corzine has actually taken to showing up at Christie events. He’s right over here in the audience, let me go get him for ya. You jackass.” Or better yet, I would have loved to be directing this newscast, “hey, Shep, buddy, can you stop making idiotic comments that make absolutely no sense and read the prompter like the monkey you are? All of us in the control room are now dumber for even having to listen to that. Thank you for that.”

YYZ on October 28, 2009 at 12:43 AM

If you want to watch liberals then watch EVERY single other network on the air. What is also funny is that among the hosts you just listed, all of them have varying degrees of conservatism which is quite interesting and all of them have lively debates frequently on their shows. Those either mediates or participates with opposing views and it makes for great television which translates to great ratings.

The Special Report panel always has one liberal each day of the week and sometimes throws in a moderate like Nina Easton, Jeff Birnbaum or Mort Kondracke as well. The panel usually tilts conservative but it blows away any other panel I’ve seen on any other show. Plus, if you put the sheer brainpower of Charles Krauthammer on a panel with the entire Democratic party, it would still tilt Conservative; he’s that good.

The problem with Shep Smith is that he is just plain annoying. He whines too much, he’s not a deep thinker and just comes across as a jerk as he did here. I like Rivera a lot because he has a great personality, I don’t care that he’s a liberal. Good delivery combined with intellectual honesty is all I ask for, Shep lacks in this.

I agree with whoever mentioned Lou Dobbs, I think he would work great at 7:00 pm unless Beck is moved there. More than likely though we’ll see “Fox Report with Megyn Kelly”.

Just give me some more Lauren Sivan and I’ll be happy.

Daemonocracy on October 28, 2009 at 1:56 AM

I am pleading with Shep to move and move quickly to NBC where he so sorely belongs. Let’s see John Stossel take his place, which is what we need to counteract all the other channels who are so much in the pocket of the DNC. Shep time after time shows his liberal bias, on healthcare (it’s just an option, he says, not realizing it is the first step to single payer), on his treatment of a healthcare professional who refused to take the H1N1 virus (he forget that Thalidomide was approved by the CDC), and now on this. PLEASE GO AWAY, SHEP. WE DON’T WANT YOU ON FOX. YOU ARE BIASED AND IT SHOWS AND YOU ARE NOT A COMMENTATOR, BUT SUPPOSEDLY A JOURNALIST. A JOURNALIST IS JUST SUPPOSED TO REPORT THE NEWS, NOT MAKE COMMENTS LIKE THIS. GO AWAY LITTLE BOY.

doncow on October 28, 2009 at 3:59 AM

I think Shep either senses or knows Beck is going to take his slot. So this is part of the interview process to work for MSNBC.

davecatbone on October 28, 2009 at 4:36 AM

Maybe Shep would like to work with Combs? They could have a lefty love fest. MSNBC should take the pair, they could be the moderate voices. Stossel would be great in that time slot. Stossel is more fair, balanced and interesting to listen to. Shep is not eye candy to me. He is creepy looking.

I thought Shep’s snarky sarcasm was obvious. What’s the tip-off? Having/cultivating a good sense of humor helps.

I think you should contrast your impression of Shep in this clip with a Lefty who Rush perpetually befuddles humor-wise to understand that you just might be missing something…

Bizarro No. 1 on October 28, 2009 at 6:54 AM

What’s so wrong about Shep, aside from the insulting way he treated his colleague, is that his hour is a straight news show! It’s not his job to provide editorials or his spin. It’s his job to report on the day’s news. In this instance, it was painfully clear that Shep didn’t lift a finger to get the story about WHY Corzine wasn’t interviewed. He simply took the opportunity to castigate his network and his co-workers based on his own political prejudices.

Shep, If you can’t report the news objectively, it’s time to get the hell out of the business.

MJBrutus on October 28, 2009 at 6:58 AM

He can always find employment at CNN or MSNBC until they go out of business.

AUINSC on October 27, 2009 at 11:34 PM

I should have given a more in-depth response, and told you that one tip-off is the silliness of idea that Shep didn’t already know that Corzine was avoiding Fox when he asked Shannon about him i.e. Shep was playing dumb in order to launch an attack.

Bizarro No. 1 on October 28, 2009 at 7:43 AM

Then you witnessed what 75 years of democrat control will produce. The truth is that fema did exactly what it was supposed to do, the national guard did exactly what they were supposed to do. katrina was a tragedy because of the immediate actions (or lack of actions) of the democrats who were in control and what 75 years of welfare state will produce. Take your lies and democrat propaganda somewhere else , loser.

peacenprosperity on October 28, 2009 at 7:47 AM

Shep Smith appears to be the Rachael Maddow of Fox News. Smith hosts two shows too many, on Fox. Michelle Malkin ought to be offered his 7 pm slot and Mark Steyn would be a fabulous Fox News host at 3 pm.

These are serious times and Fox News is insulting its audience with a host Shep Smith.

Good question. Is Shep saying that if Dems refuse to talk to Fox, he’d rather have dead air than interview a Republican alone? Honestly, I don’t think Shep knows what he’s talking about, much less us.

No one’s going to accuse him of being a very deep thinker.

RadClown on October 28, 2009 at 8:06 AM

As long as Lou Dobbs is on at the same time as Smith, there is no possible reason to watch this twerp. Smith is only echoing Obama’s directive to his brainwashed legions. Can’t blame Smith for what he can’t comprehend. You can blame Fox for allowing his incompetence to be aired in prime time though.

Shep Smith is a disgusting human being. His whiny coverage of New Orleans in the post-Katrina aftermath told us all that needs to be known about the weasel. I personally think that Sheps question was a rhetorical one. Shannon was at a Christie fundraiser and Shep didn’t like it. Listen to what he says first.

“The Democrats going to win right?”

When he knows the polls say otherwise. I think he was saying that it was wrong for her to be at fundraiser to begin with without FIRST getting Corzine.

tmedlin on October 28, 2009 at 9:27 AM

Now that I think about it, the Fox Report used to be more of a tabloid show when it first launched, like Inside Edition. It didn’t focus on celebrities necessarily, just had a flashier presentation and covered some oddball stories of the day to mix things up. They should really go back to this format because we don’t need another straight news show at 7:00pm. Especially with Shep as host who is a far cry from Brett Baier or Brit Hume.

Daemonocracy on October 28, 2009 at 9:31 AM

Anytime Shep covers Israel and the Palestinians, he makes me want to puke. He is obviously not a fan of Israel at all. Years ago, I noticed his bias in reporting on that and realized that he was no conservative. His bias shows through to me constantly now. I love Fox News, but I am not a fan of Shep’s.

squeek71 on October 28, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Good.

Now we need similar apologies from every other news network for giving two hoots about the opinions of spoiled Hollywierd celebrities, lack of fact-checking in general, and reporting semi-pointless drivel as ‘news’.

Dark-Star on October 28, 2009 at 9:45 AM

I have never really watched Sheps show all the way through even though I sometimes have that on when I am getting supper ready. I won’t be doing that anymore. From now on I will flip the channel to HGTV or something. The worst part of that little clip is that it was like an attack on a co-worker. What idiot says something like that when they KNOW that Corzine won’t interview with Fox News because he can’t answer questions truthfully. If Shep feels he could do better than Shannon, maybe he should go back to reporting in the field and give Shannon his show.
If I want to hear more liberal crap there are a half dozen other channels to watch.

Priscilla on October 28, 2009 at 10:03 AM

Agree.

LEBA on October 28, 2009 at 10:06 AM

I had the TV on when Shep did this, but I thought his apology related to him saying before the break that “the democrat is definitely going to win, right?”. He was speaking to a female correspondent, and I don’t know which election he was talking about. When I heard the apology, I felt that was what he was apologizing about (since none of the 3 elections upcoming indicate a definite democrat winner). Wish I’d been paying more attention.

Eyeliner poisoning.
Let this be a lesson to all the young bi-curious boys.

Awesome!

TheSitRep on October 28, 2009 at 10:09 AM

Are you all seriously missing his sarcasm? He has always been a sarcastic ass. He is mocking those that call FOX unbalanced.

Jay on October 27, 2009 at 9:38 PM

If it was, then Shep needs to work on his delivery. He should take lessons from Anita Dunn. Her Mao “joke” was hilarious.

RadClown on October 28, 2009 at 9:01 AM

Everyone’s a critic, aren’t they? Just what we need, the Humor Police to step in.

Shep’s delivery wasn’t up to your snuff? Why, how Conservative to put the burden on Shep to change his humor style to satisfy you rather than altering your expectations, and allowing him the space to express himself the way he chooses to!!!

Bizarro No. 1 on October 28, 2009 at 10:10 AM

Shep is a perfect fit for MSNBC. Frankly, I have been amazed Fox kept him all these years, especially following his highly biased reporting in the Katrina aftermath. I understand, however, that women find him to be sexy, resulting in increased viewership for the 7:00 (Eastern time) news..

Somehow, Shep’s constant bootlicking for the Obama administration has escaped their notice.

ptolemy on October 28, 2009 at 10:14 AM

I don’t know Big John, sorry I can’t pass the “Big John test”, but I was reading and posting on Michelle’s blog long before HotAir even existed. Granted I don’t post very often, but I’ve still been around.

But let this be a lesson to everyone on this site…you disagree with the status quo on one issue (even on an issue that effected you personally) and you are spittle shooting, mouth breathing, whiny kossack.

and the Ryno in my name is because my name is Ryan, nothing to do with “RINO”.

But you want proof.

from three years ago when that creepy KOS kid damn near assaulted George Allen:

Does anyone else think this guy looks like the lonely and slimy Mark David Chapman/John Hinkley type? I wouldn’t want him getting anywhere near Allen.

When Fred Thompson announced he had lymphoma:

Lefty blogs celebrate in glee and wish for his death in 3…2…

SillyRyno on April 11, 2007 at 10:41 AM

when Fred was doing his weekly radio addresses:

Oh lord, that’s bloody fantastic. Please let Sen. Thompson be our next President. God knows we need someone who is that articulate and has that Reaganesque communication style back in the White House.

SillyRyno on March 15, 2007 at 1:05 PM

on Ward Churchill:

Ann Coulter said it best when she called him “Sitting Bullsh*t”

SillyRyno on May 30, 2007 at 12:13 PM

but you see guys, it was all a front. I was posting three years ago just so I could one day out myself as a troll because I sympathized with Shep going nuts about Katrina, something that effected me personally and that I witnessed firsthand.

I’m tired of being assaulted by lefty clowns like this wimp simply because some brainless twit gets all mushy inside.

Give Julie Banderas Shep’s job.

If you have to explain that it’s a joke, then it’s not funny. Get it?

RadClown on October 28, 2009 at 10:22 AM

What’s this about, seriously?

Fox News has been attacked as being “the conservative news” and “not a real news organization.” Shep Smith, as the resident liberal (I guess), is being turned loose to be as liberal as he wants to be as evidence that Fox has plenty of liberals and is, in fact, fair and balanced.

He doesn’t sound even remotely sarcastic there, and that reporter lady didn’t seem too pleased that he’d even asked.

I understand, however, that women find him to be sexy,

That’s can’t possibly be true. I have no idea what women like but that dude looks like an alien.

Proud Rino on October 28, 2009 at 10:22 AM

There isn’t enough of the clip to understand.

She said she put in requests to speak with him and hasn’t heard anything.

So, what is NOT BALANCED about that? sheesh, Shep.

Proud Rino on October 28, 2009 at 10:22 AM

I find him very attractive, but I find him more attractive when he sticks to straight news and not giving his opinions. Remember when he flipped out and said, “WE don’t Fing TORTURE!!!!”
He went from ‘hot’ to ‘a little cute’ for me that day. ha

bridgetown on October 28, 2009 at 10:33 AM

bridgetown on October 28, 2009 at 10:31 AM

Exactly. People do stuff like that all the time. I guess you could assume he’s being sarcastic, but he sure didn’t seem sarcastic to me. I think he’s being let off the leash to be as liberal as he wants to be so Fox News can regain a little cred (and also it will annoy the hell out of liberals).
