Video: Rubio on principles and winning

posted at 10:55 am on October 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio appeared on Joe Scarborough’s show this morning to talk about his campaign against Governor Charlie Crist for the open Senate seat in the 2010 Republican primary. Rubio got treated well by the Morning Joe panel, which let him speak at length about the necessity of sticking to principles rather than worry about diluting one’s party to win votes. Rubio reminded the MS-NBC audience that self-identified conservatives are growing in number — and besides, if voters really want to support statist intervention, the Democratic Party already offers that choice:

This was an excellent appearance by Rubio, who may benefit the most from the contretemps over the NY-23 special election. One of Joe’s panelists makes a sneering reference to Washington Republicans and their intervention on Crist’s behalf in this race, a theme which has gathered more steam since Newt Gingrich’s defense of his endorsement of Dede Scozzafava. Rubio is exactly the kind of candidate that Tea Party activists want from the GOP, and his growing popularity shows that he has captured the energy of the grassroots activists.

The 2010 elections will hinge on government interventions in the economy. If the GOP wants to win, they need to find candidates like Rubio, Pat Toomey, Douglas Hoffman, Rob Portman, and others who put the principles of fiscal conservatism and limited government ahead of all other considerations. A nation aghast at the Obama overreach in 2009 needs clear choices, not various shades of Democrat Lite. Rubio has this exactly correct.

OT: But funny.

One Obama doorbell ringer, working neighborhoods in Northern Virginia for Creigh Deeds, says even the promise of free pizza can’t lure faithful Democrats to a rally.

Now is the time for principle first candidates.

Doug Hoffman and Marco Rubio out of the gates first. There’s going to be some other guys who start shaking things up in the 2010 races.

The sky is the limit for Rubio, especially when his message gets a wider audience. Whatever he wants will be his for the taking. It’s just a matter of him determining how high he wants to go.

“Sneering reference”?

Ed, I think you may have mis-characterized the tone of Dan Senor’s question. I thought it was a valid question for Rubio to address.

Excellent interview by Rubio. I like the way he framed it “There’s a group of people out there who believe that the only solution is for the government to open up an insurance company …” Makes me think he’s been reading Hotair comments :) It’s great to hear Rubio telling people to be unapologetic about their political philosophy, especially as it is the American philosophy. I hope he cleans Crist’s clock.

And Dan Senor for the win at the end!

Wanted to add that Rubio appears to have a very polished campaign team, at least when it comes to new media. The video of his appearance on MSNBC this morning was in my inbox at 6:54 AM.

BardMan on October 27, 2009 at 11:07 AM

Rubio is another proof that the conservatives are on the march with the future of the republican party the prize.

Republicans need to take note of the gress roots conservative movement. We are going to elect conservatives based on their values not on their party affiliation.

Can we take back our party? We can do it…YES WE CAN

ninjapirate on October 27, 2009 at 11:08 AM

It’s easy for us to see, but it’s a harder choice when it means the GOP leaders need to eliminate themselves. I understand it’s hard to step aside for the good of the country. But that’s the tradition of American service. Washington didn’t try to hold onto his power. Today’s leaders need to be less selfish and more selfless.

I do live in Florida and I’m looking forward to voting for Rubio. The conservative movement needs hundreds more like him. Marco’s a little weak on illegal aliens though. That’s the only troubling position that he has for me. There’s a rock solid conservative in the race (Bob Smith), but he has little chance of competing with Rubio and Crist. If we can’t have a Duncan Hunter, Marco’s a close second.

Bulldogger on October 27, 2009 at 11:09 AM

This is completely accurate. Conservatism is the rising movement in America, thanks to the fact that the voters have gotten 9 months of real life “re-education” as to what things are like when the socialist closet marxist left actually GOVERNS.

Imagine how bad it will be after 2 years then 4 years of it?

As I’ve speculated before, every generation NEEDS to experience “Jimmy Carter” so as to have a living memory of what it’s like. Call it the voter school of hard knocks.

The total should go way up now that HA posted it.

I’m confident that Rubio will win. Every time I see him interviewed I wonder how any conservative could vote against him, and I think he will appeal to moderates too.

Christ is barely clinging to 50%, and everybody already knows who he is. That’s real bad news for Christ.

forest on October 27, 2009 at 11:13 AM

In order to win any war, a purge of the enemy within is the first priority. Aiding and abetting Marxism seems to characterize what our Marist media terms “moderates” in the GOP. As a conservative, I believe that the GOP itself is the first problem – an army battling against its own very soul.

orlandocajun on October 27, 2009 at 11:09 AM

Fair enough, but isn’t he himself the son of Cuban refugees who came here illegally (well, i guess political refugee is ‘legal’)

From what i’ve read, he’s strong on the law-abiding crackdown on illegals, but is a bit more ‘humane’ about it, which, like it or not, is the “majority” american position: “dont break the law, dont come here illegally, but as we deport you we arent treating you like cockroaches”

im guessing his family’s path has something to do with it

battleoflepanto1571 on October 27, 2009 at 11:14 AM

I want candidates that stick to conservative principles. If we lose that way, then oh well. We HAVE to have people that believe in something, not just on getting elected and making a lifelong career on the public’s dime. I just think that in most cases, if you run on a true conservative platform you will win much more than you will lose.

faraway on October 27, 2009 at 11:26 AM

Agree.

We can no longer tolerate the “go-along-to-get-along” Republicans who preach tolerance, civility and compromise with the Democrats.

And no, I’m not joking.

“Tolerance and civility” are code words for conservatives wearing doormats on their back, as the left destroys our economy and tramples on our values.

The left does not respect us, they don’t care what we think or what we value and the only thing they tolerate is when we take orders from them.

All we want is to be left the hell alone, for the most part.

Meanwhile, the left wants us under their thumb as subjects of corrupt incompetents like Barack Obama.

We need to fight the left as seriously as they are fighting us.

Otherwise, it’s going to be on something more than the political battlefields.

Because they don’t want to actually “expand” their party. they want TOKENS to give them a fig leaf and yet retain the power. they have no intention of giving up power to outsiders and i don’t care if the outsider is a woman, a hispanic, a black or a white guy. They voted Steele in as a Token. they are fighting him everyday. It is about power not race or sex. A Sen hutchison has the same thought process as a Newt because it is about power.

The media has hammered every conservative since it seems like time began. Condi? Bush? Palin? reagan? Ford? Nixion? Santorum? Rush? Hannity? beck? OReily? ringing any bells.

As the made up rush quotes show Palin was the test case. they took the Palin treatment and since there was no downside they used it against Rush. they now have a template they will make crap up asnd spread false information to fit the narrative. They will do this up to the time that there becomes a downside. it is human nature. You find something that works and you continue to use that stratagey until it doesn’t

this is what gets me mad about alot of people’s lack of support for Palin. They have allowed themselves to think that if only she will go away the media and the left will be nice to us again. that our next champion will be treated differently, that it was the person herself not the state run marxist media that destroyed her but her own flaws. It’s like they have stockholm syndrome or something.

The very idea of conservatism, of family values, of ethics, of morals etc is LOL funny to the left. they have none. they laugh at any squares that “pretend” to have them. They are evil and they will mock and make fun of anything and anyone of good.

Then yesterday lo and behold I get an envelope from none other than JEB BUSH JR asking for donations for Rubio’s campaign.

I’m unconvinced that Rubio is just the front for continued influence and access to power for the Bush Family.

NEVER NEVER AGAIN should the Bushes be anywhere near the White House.

And don’t kid yourselves Rubio is being setup to be a 2012 VP candidate at the least, or maybe 2016 Presidential candidate. I like him and his principles but…..

….now the NATIONAL REVIEW has endorsed him (and they are a hotbed of ROMNEY RINO’s.

I hope I’m wrong.

Let me tell you what: this guy is extremely easy on the eyes. There are way too many unattractive politicians in D.C. (most fall on the Left side of the aisle…). So I say give Rubio a chance!

You’re right, Rubio has the principles and track record, but you should probably vote for Crist. He’s 100% Obama huggin’ RINO, but at least Jeb and National Review didn’t endorse him.

Rubio’s recently aquired set of principles leave me unimpressed. His term as speaker was disorganized and riddled with ethics issues. He accomplished next to nothing of consequence during his term as speaker (well he got truck nutz banned) and has just as much hand in FL’s budget issues as the Governor that he snipes at from the cheap seats.

He is the Republican Obama, pretty words, kooky followers, no record to back himself up and a strong tie-in to his corrupt hometown political machine.

That being said, I will vote for him in the general if he wins the primary (and I think he will). He may win the general, too, but only because the Dem, Kendrick Meeks, is so shady that he makes Rubio and his indicted handpicked successor look like Elliot Ness.

Thanks for that. I think Rubio has a future, whether he beats Crist or not.

I saw him this morning and have seen him before. Always predictably conservative and articulate. Actually, in longer interviews, Rubio is even better. Thinks well on his feet as opposed to the Obamessiah.

Rubio is impressive. Being Latino helps in a unique way.

Rubio is the conservative’s real deal.

Pappy, even if you’re wrong, he’s better than the Dem and the RINO. There’s another staunch conservative in the race by the name of Bob Smith.

He endorsed Kerry, no go. All three of them are not ideal. But Rubio is not my choice for sure.

I’m surprised the RINO hunters haven’t made their appearance and declared you an apostate for stating this. How could you possibly declare fiscal conservatism and limited government to be principals above all others???? Why, you almost sound … libertarian!

nukemhill on October 27, 2009 at 1:49 PM

He is the so-called “perfect candidate” for the GOP, and yet they support a RINO. Stuck on stupid!

I was impressed with how positive he was. A twofer, cute and conservative!

Always a good combination :)

Ed, don’t let AP see your comments.

He could pop a blood vessel.
