Schwarzenegger sends very special message to legislator who heckled him
posted at 9:49 pm on October 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via Ace, it appears to be legit. Quote:

Don’t see it? This site will clue you in. He has disgraced the office of governor of Kah-lee-for-nee-ah — unless, of course, it’s just an amazing koh-een-see-deens. Any math majors want to take a run at calculating the odds of this happening by pure chance?
A slight mitigating factor: He sent this to the guy who heckled him with “kiss my gay ass” when he stopped by the San Fran Democratic Party a few weeks ago, although incivility in the heat of the moment is one thing and incivility in the course of official state business something else. Ah well. His political career will be over soon anyway. Exit question: If he had figured out a way to add a few lines starting with s-h-o-l-e after his signature, this would have become downright impressive, wouldn’t it? And darned Terminator-y!

Hmmm. That’s pretty speculative to assume he did that on purpose and “disgraced” the office, as you put it. Though the odds of it happening by chance are likely very small, it’s got iron clad deniability.

Sure there is. Just calculate the odds. My math is rusty, but isn’t it something on the order of 26^7? (Each line, theoretically, could start with any of the 26 letters of the alphabet, and there are seven lines.) And it just so happens to occur in a letter to a guy who got national attention for heckling him? Don’t be naive.

AUINSC on October 27, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Well, that’s assuming each letter has an equal chance of beginning each line, which is not the case. If there were a few x’s or z’s in his message…
I don’t think there is any easy way of calculating the odds given the subject mater. Your best bet is some form of frequency analysis. It doesn’t feel like he is reaching to spell that out though.
jhffmn on October 27, 2009 at 10:16 PM
Without regard for frequency of use of the various letters, the chance of this happening randomly is 1 in 26^7, or 1 in 8031810176. Of course, all the letters are used more frequently than some other letters (Q, Z, X0, which brings the likelihood up significantly.
Could happen. Ya never know.
Anyways, I like it!
JohnGalt23 on October 27, 2009 at 10:16 PM
Yeah, I already did. It’s about 1 in 300 million (actually smaller if you want to figure out a way to calculate the odds of only the F and U being capitalized), which is why I said that it’s likely intentional.
And with proof being a relative term, I guess I should have said there’s no way to provide absolute proof that it was intentional.

Patrick S on October 27, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Actually, I just did the math again to be sure, and I was off an order of magnitude. It’s actually about one in 8 trillion. So yeah, highly likely it was intentional.

Feedie on October 27, 2009 at 10:21 PM
Allah,
It’s much larger of a probability than that. 26 characters in alphabet, and 7 lines, but you also have to tabulate how many letters can fit on one line. For example, if it was 50 letters per line, the equation would be on the order of 50!/[(50-26)!26!]. ( ! in this case is the factorial function, e.g. 3! = 1x2x3. ) Anyway, that is ~ 1.2×10^14. I may bit a little off on the probability estimate, but the odds are incredibly large regardless!
Weebork on October 27, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Whoops, that approximation was just for one line! So mulitply the above big number by 7 :)
Weebork on October 27, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Well at least somebody told the SF un-American malefactors in charge what they so richly deserve to hear.
Speakup on October 27, 2009 at 10:25 PM
Why would number of letters in a line matter? Each line is only going to have one letter that starts it. I think the only other factors to consider would be the odds of only the F and U being capitalized, and trying to figure out the difference in percentages of individual character use in the English language (which sounds awful).
BadgerHawk on October 27, 2009 at 10:26 PM

Geochelone on October 27, 2009 at 10:30 PM
All of the spaces were taken into account because the beginning of each line was predicated on the letters and spacing before them. There had to be a string of letters and spaces to bring us my esteemed governor’s magic message to life. No decoder ring required! :)
Weebork on October 27, 2009 at 10:31 PM

29Victor on October 27, 2009 at 10:34 PM
That’s what I was thinking. Do people think the Governator is fluent enough in English to write this?
Now, whether he was in on the joke… I don’t know.
malclave on October 27, 2009 at 10:35 PM
Not really. There isn’t a 1 in 26 chance that a word will begin with any given letter. Words that begin with “x” are obviously uncommon, and my guess is that these 7 letters are on the common side (I’m sure this can be looked up).
But let’s be conservative and make it 1 in 13 for each of those 7 letters. Then it’s 1 in 13^7 (~6 million). But that’s just the odds of a *given* 7 lines beginning with those specific letters. Let’s say he’s written 100 such letters. The odds of at least *one* of those letter having this pattern is about 1 in a million. If he’s written 1000, then it’s 1 in 100,000. If you want the odds of it happening to any major politican, then keep multiplying by the number of people you want to include, and the odds aren’t so outlandish, but still pretty unlikely.
Anyway, I’m sure you could refine that a little more with better assumptions and make it more accurate. Either way, I think both that this was on purpose, and that it’s kind of funny, politics aside.
tneloms on October 27, 2009 at 10:36 PM

I’ve waited my entire adult life to see something like this. I don’t care if the side thing is real or not. The fact that he’s telling the legislature to pound salt is absolutely positively DELIGHTFUL.
They’ve needed to be told to piss off for decades. If any legislature deserved this and oh so much more, it’s California’s. They have literally screwed the state into the ground, without any remorse. I would prefer tar and feathers, but this is a great start.

While I suspect you are right, don’t count him out entirely.
DiFi and Boxer are both getting a little long in the tooth. Feinstein, in particular, is 76 years old, and will be 79 when she has to run for reelection. And last time Arnold ran, in a big Democratic year, he won in California by 16 points. Him running in 2012 against DiFi or some other Dem is not out of the realm of possibility.
JohnGalt23 on October 27, 2009 at 10:46 PM
Meh, whatever. California isn’t a serious state anyway. They’re about to go bankrupt due to in large part to bloated government workers sucking at the taxpayer teet with their overgenerous and underfunded pensions. The whole state is governed by a corrupt clown possee. So why shouldn’t the Gov give back as good as he gets? Maybe when they finally declare bankruptcy we can just revert them to territory status and we won’t have to deal with their 59 some odd electoral votes in presidential elections. Maybe a threat like that would straighten them out.
