Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on October 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Jim Geraghty notices a telling juxtaposition of wire stories, and frames them in a way that the media won’t:

The White House responded to former vice president Cheney’s accusation of “dithering” on war decisions by countering that Cheney had “not focused on Afghanistan” for seven years; the following day, President Obama left for a series of fundraisers in Connecticut and Massachusetts and a weekend golf outing.

I don’t think that this decision should get rushed, and hopefully Obama reaches the right decision.  However, thus far he hasn’t much room to opine on focus.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

Ed, Obama has passed the ‘rushing’ stage a long time ago. He had two years of campaigning and 10 months of being president. How ‘rushed’ can this decision be?

Phoenician on October 27, 2009 at 8:09 AM

Let me know when the Obama WH starts acting like the Pres. and we can actually talk about what he’s doing without talking about the last administration.
What is this? pre-school?

Well in Obama’s defense on this issue, from all reports it does seem pretty obvious that his time on the golf course isnt spent focusing on GOLF… /rimshot…

doriangrey on October 27, 2009 at 8:14 AM

Rush? What are you talking about? The decision was made in March. Obama picked his commander, and now he won’t give him the men and resources he needs to complete his mission because the poll numbers have shifted against the war.

TimBuk3 on October 27, 2009 at 8:17 AM

It wasn’t all that long ago, this past summer, when Obama said a decision on Afghanistan would be forthcoming in a few weeks, after review, of course. Last month, Obama said a decision would be forthcoming in a couple weeks. Now, Obama says he has to take more time to give the matter careful consideration.

Carpe diem!
Or from Obama’s perspective, carping every day.

Men and women are risking their lives out there, getting hurt, getting killed…while their CinC has to give things a bit more time.

How much time, Mr. Obama? Have you no decency?

Larger wars than Afghanistan have been lost in a far shorter period of time when politicians sat around discusing grand strategy whilst an enemy just went ahead with their own game plan. France, 1939 comes to mind.

Or is it that Obama cannot actually make a decision?

He is not being rushed. The report is in and has been in for weeks now. He campaigned on this promise over a year ago. He just doesn’t want to ‘make a decision’ that would anger his base before healthcare gets passed. He can keep claiming that it is a hard decision and he wants to take his time but that is a lie. He wants the announcement of the decision to become easier and it wont. He is putting our troops in danger so he can pass his domestic policy and it disgusts me.

kingsjester on October 27, 2009 at 8:23 AM

I don’t think that this decision should get rushed, and hopefully Obama reaches the right decision. However, thus far he hasn’t much room to opine on focus.

How can this decision be rushed? The change of commanders and presumably strategy (more like what Patraeus did in Iraq) happened months ago. The request for troops was known in August but deliberately held up from being officially presented to the filthy lying coward to give him more time to dither (officially the DOD was assessing the assessment). Now the rat bastard traitor continues to dither way.

The decision when it comes will be many things and will be upsetting to one group or another but it most certainly will not be rushed. It’s not a lack of focus but a lack of finding a political solution to a military problem that is holding the filthy lying coward back. Americans are dying in Afghanistan every day this bastard is delaying making a decision. The troops deserve better and so does America.

I need to know something before I agree that the president is right to take this time for the decision. Are our guys over there overworked and under supported? It is painfully obvious by now that Obama’s heart simply is not in issues of the military and national security. Eventually he will do something — just the bare minimum of what he absolutely has to — but then he will return to economic and national political affairs, because that is the arena in which he wants to remake the country. Afghanistan and Pakistan really mean nothing to him, but when Fox News speaks out against him, then he really pays attention quickly.

When my husband was in Iraq, Obama voted against troop funding after he had promised to “put the troops first”. (This was during the campaign.)

Now with my son in Afghanistan, and troops on the ground waiting for his word, he is waiting for the polls to see which way the wind will blow. How many more kids will get blown up while he makes up his mind?

Either get them out of there, or give them the ability to fight and the backing to win. There is no “present” on this one.

The White House responded to former vice president Cheney’s accusation of “dithering” on war decisions by countering that Cheney had “not focused on Afghanistan” for seven years; the following day, President Obama left for a series of fundraisers in Connecticut and Massachusetts and a weekend golf outing.

Being a liberal means never having to hold yourself to the same standards you set for others.

The press would be eating a Republican President up for being so weak, partisan, and showing a total lack of leadership like this White House is doing with so much at stake.

The Press and other pundits can continue to spin and cover for Obama but one thing they can’t hide, is failure, which is looking like the theme of this administration as each day goes by.

Even the person who got shot has admitted that it was his fault for being out of position. Quail hunting is not like deer hunting, where you have time to line up your shot, and make sure that there is nobody behind your target.

There’s a reason quail hunters walk in a line, it’s so the other hunters know where you are without looking. When a quail takes flight, there is no time to check on where the other guys are. The guy who got shot had gotten ahead of the line.

Hate to put too fine a point on it for you…but…Barry just doesn’t care.

Actually, make that a craven dirtball.
Yep.
Better.

Stop insulting craven dirtballs.

Obama-nation has made his decision. He will stall until everybody has forgotten that he declared the war in Afghanistan necessary, and then offer the Taliban weapons of mass destruction if they stay quiet until the pullout is complete.
