Hope and change: McDonnell cruising in Virginia, Christie ahead in New Jersey
posted at 5:09 pm on October 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
Couple this with Hoffman’s maybe-yes-maybe-no lead in NY-23 and you’ve got the makings of a conservative thunderbolt next week, which would be spectacular in how it might affect the health-care debate. Christie doesn’t even have to win his race to throw a scare into the Blue Dogs; the fact that he’s ahead this late in a deep blue state despite his own less-than-scintillating appeal should be enough. Combine that with the realization that Virginia, last year’s biggest bellwether, is not only about to go red but red with a vengeance and ObamaCare fencesitters in Congress should have a lot to think about over Thanksgiving break. Here’s Chris Cillizza, putting two and two together in comparing Bob McDonnell’s blowout lead with new data showing 53 percent opposition in Virginia to the current health-care proposals:
Data points like this one suggest two important things in regards the 2010 midterms.
First, the American people — or at least likely voters in the swing state of Virginia — are not yet sold on the necessity or efficacy of the legislation. That’s especially true of politically critical independents as just 36 percent of them support the proposed changes to the health care system.
Second, among those who oppose it, that position is strongly held while among those who support it there is far less intensity. Nearly eight in ten (79 percent) of self-identified Republicans in the poll strongly oppose the proposed changes while 60 percent of self identified Democrats strongly support them. Those numbers suggest the sort of disparity between party base energy that could have a real impact on the races next November, which, if history is any guide, will be far lower turnout affairs than the 2008 presidential contest.
I’m mildly surprised that Palin didn’t play up the “kill ObamaCare” angle in endorsing McDonnell and Christie today. Without the sort of big-picture national angle from which Doug Hoffman’s benefiting, Mc and C probably can’t expect much in terms of nationwide grassroots donations. Frame their races as referendums on health care, though, and that’ll change in a hurry. Exit question: If all three win, is the public option finished?

Obama is Cortez in this case. He sailed them to a “New World,” and burned their ships… only later found out it was a small island, and now the men are turning against him.

Blue Dogs are only mildly centrist. They tend to have low ACU ratings… I don’t see any threat to them with a Corzine win… a win is a win is a win… and it will be spun that way.
Whatever threat they feel from the current political climate won’t be swayed by them moving an inch rightward… so they won’t. They might waffle a bit for a while… but after all, they are Democrats.

What I would like to know is how Dagget got into this race. From what I am hearing he could end up being Christie’s Ross Perot. Did the Dems encourage him to run? Every time I hear 3rd party candidate I automatically think there’s a Democrat in a heap of trouble.
Help me out here, Jerseyites.

Here’s my nightmare……Christie and Daggett get the majority of votes, but Corzine wins anyway with less than 45% of votes cast.
Man, I hate this state.
Jerome Horwitz on October 27, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Maybe because Christie, at least, has not opined on the issue (as far as I know). It would seem, what’s the word, “amateurish” to proclaim a vote for Christie as a vote against ObamaCare, if Christie doesn’t, in fact, oppose it.
notropis on October 27, 2009 at 5:27 PM
When Democrats win in the South (and the control a helluva lot of seats in Southern state legislatures), it is because they run to the right. They portray themselves as local, pro-gun, pro-life democrats with a small “d”… what do Republicans have to do in NJ? I can’t imagine.
There is no historic Republicanism in the NE left (a majority of Southerners are still registered Democrats). The only way for a Republican to win is for the Democrat to lose. That is, if Corzine loses, it will a referendum on him, not some move to the right… and does anyone know exactly how conservative Christie is?
mankai on October 27, 2009 at 5:27 PM
It will be a great day for conservatism. Will be interesting to see the lib media spin the trifecta loss.
farright on October 27, 2009 at 5:27 PM
I don’t think even all three have to win. I’m with AP here, a crushing defeat in Virginia would freeze all fencesitters/Blue Dogs, like Heath Shuler just miles across the border in NC. No chance of him voting remotely left after that.

A more colorful description than Red October is this: Fat man and little boy are about to be visited upon Obamaland in order to flatten the false idols of Hope&Change.
The victory speeches from McDonnell and Christie need to have lots of red meat, to send the message to Obama and his stupid cronies.

It all seems too good to be true. The Dems don’t fight fair and these reces arn’t over until there over.
I Expect the win in VA and look to CD-23 as a definate possibility. Cornine in NJ will be tough to beet. He’s been buying elections for years and he plays really dirty.
Go Christy.
SayNo2-O on October 27, 2009 at 5:37 PM
Ramming speed, indeed.
As for the elections, especially NJ, this close to the actual election if they had any real “dirt” or damaging suprises in their pockets I think they would have dropped them by now. What is it, ten days or? That’s awefully close to the drop-dead date to hold onto to anything truly harmful with races going the wrong way for them.

How about we all calm down about how wonderful polling data looks still 7 days from election day? There is still a long way to go. Remember, the more we go around crowing about how far we are ahead, the more it will potentially energize the leftist base (especially here in NoVa). Also, do not underestimate the Chicago machine’s ability to stuff the ballot boxes in VA and NJ.
I am all for exciting our base, but let’s not start counting our chickens before they hatch.
In the meantime, if you know anyone in the subject jurisdictions, PLEASE GET THEM TO THE POLLS on November 2 and let’s give the Messiah the only message that counts – VICTORY for the GOP!

Virginia’s gonna be nice, but if NJ is close at all, Corzine and the dems will be able to get enough fraudulent votes through to put him over the top. Come on, people. It’s New Jersey — and we’re talking about democrats here. Christie’s gotta win big or he’ll lose. Corzine’s money can get a lot of local vote counters to, cough, cough, “find” the votes he needs in a close contest, or, as I like to say: Senator Stuart Smalley…

mudskipper on October 27, 2009 at 5:57 PM
Answer: No. The three combined have a grand total of 0 impact on the Democrat’s in congress, and they will pass Obamacare with the public option.
While the end result of passing Obamacare will probably remove many of the Democrat Senators and Representatives, they will still retain a majority in the Senate and House, and Obama will get reelected to a second term. National polls are almost meaningless to locally elected Senators and Representatives.

If all three win, I’d hope the whole dratted thing was finished. These bills are a disaster of mountainous proportions. Congress should dump all the current bills and start over with a much more modest proposal.
hachiban on October 27, 2009 at 6:06 PM
I see a lot of you sort of joke about dead voters and ballot box stuffing but it is a huge problem. Here in Ca Lorreta Sanchez stole the election with illegal immigrant vote casters, Obama stole the caucuses in Texas and another state? Franken robbed Coleman and these are just the small fraction we know of… I really hope to God the Republicans have taken precautions against voter fraud. I believe that Obama will do everything and anything not to lose because if the repubs or conservative win, he does lose!
CCRWM on October 27, 2009 at 6:08 PM
This is what I hope for! I don’t care if McDonnell is ahead by 45 points next Monday; I can’t wait to vote for him. I hope all my other fellow conservative Virginians will turn out to vote as if he is behind. This is our chance to be the first in the nation to say Go to ****, Obama!

On the elections next week, we are one.
On the series, though, I’m torn. Because of fellow Texan Andy Pettite, I’m leaning Yanks.
Then again, A-Rod’s playin’ the love of my life, Kate Hudson, for a fool. She’ll wake up soon enough and return to me, if I’ll have her.
The Phillies, on the other hand, are the underdog… like me and most people I like.
Bottom line, I like winning most of all. So, it’s the Bombers in 5.

I actually think we are better off without Christie winning, but since it pegs Obama and hopefully helps NJ’s budget and tax situation out, it may be ok for 1 cycle.
