Pelosi: Hey, let’s start calling the public option by another name

posted at 8:40 pm on October 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

I kind of like this one, just because it’s so shameless in its Orwellianism. If you’re going to go for “black = white” Newspeak, really go for it, you know? Now think: If you were trying to sell a policy like the public option, the big fear of which is that it’s going to drive private insurers out of business and lead to a single-payer government monopoly, what’s the most Orwellian euphemism you could come up with for it? Think hard.

Right.

In an appearance at a Florida senior center, the Democratic leader referred to the so-called public option as “the consumer option.” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., appeared by Pelosi’s side and used the term “competitive option.”

Both suggested new terminology might get them past any lingering doubts among the public – or consumers or competitors.

“You’ll hear everyone say, ‘There’s got to be a better name for this,’” Pelosi said. “When people think of the public option, public is being misrepresented, that this is being paid for with their public dollars.”…

“I think she’s going to go up and test-drive it when she goes back to Washington,” Wasserman Schultz said. “It might stick.”

It’s not going to be paid for with public dollars? Wasn’t this the same woman who, not three weeks ago, went on Charlie Rose to mumble about maybe passing a VAT to address health-care costs and giant deficits more generally? Hello?

Then again, let’s remember what kind of intellect we’re dealing with here. Exit question: Why does the public option need rebranding? I thought the lefty talking point of the month was that the public loves loves loves the public option, even though it really doesn’t.

Pelosi said. “When people think of the public option, public is being misrepresented, that this is being paid for with their public dollars.”…

As we all know, government pays the bills with the money tree out back of the Capitol.

How about this: It`s not health care rationing, it`s natural selection.

I’m definitely against a public option but that competitive option sounds very intriguing.

Wait, so it’s NOT going to be paid for with public dollars? Umm, then where exactly does the government get the money? Last time I checked, there are two ways for the govt. to get money, either from taxes (public money) or from loans (eventually public money, plus more public money from interest). So what am I missing here?

Spunt?

NoDonkey on October 26, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Many people have had a difficult time accepting Adolf Hitler as a human being, a man, and instead applied gargantuon or creature aspects to him, given his abysmal and evil crimes against humanity.

Yet, the more scary, frightening aspect of Hitler was that he was, indeed, “just” a man. All that evil, from just that one man. A human being, committing and responsible for such horror.

Though I am not comparing Nancy Pelosi to Adolf Hitler, the process there of evaluating them is the same: these are individuals who are responsible for outrages against humanity that are beyond proportion to any forgiveness or “usual” understanding most reasonable people could ever extend to either (though, of course, Hitler’s evil dimensions are not to be minimized in any way — on the other hand, Pelosi’s dreadful behaviors and attempts at ruining this nation should also be more acutely evaluated).

Sometimes some people popup in our human environment who are so awful, so wretched, that it’s impossible to even regard them as human: Mao, Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Castro, Ahmadinejad, Chavez (though he’s pathetic, truly, he’s also monstrous), Kim Yong Il, Nancy Pelosi…if left to run her course.

What makes Pelosi included in that list, in my view, is that she relies on that false “goodness” presentation that masks quite evil intents and plans. In that sense, it makes her exceptionally evil.

Lourdes on October 26, 2009 at 9:03 PM

I agree with her – “Public Option” is a complete misnomer. It should be “Government Mandate“, or perhaps “Statist Cram-Job“, or maybe a more whimsical “Totalitarian Wedgie” – since what it actually “is is” a wedge for state control of private freedoms that could easily form the slippery slope to a totalitarian nightmare.

peski on October 26, 2009 at 9:03 PM

So…they did another focus group?

Idiots. And liars.

Yellowdog12 on October 26, 2009 at 9:04 PM

You know, I’ve spoken often about the brilliance of the Clinton’s, and this is one example of that brilliance.

The Clinton’s came up with policy based upon focus groups, terms and descriptions were checked by those same groups. So that when the Clinton machine presented an idea, it was already coached in those terms. Not Gun Control, common sense gun regulations. Remember that one friends?

Since the Clinton’s left the Office, the Democrats haven’t yet figured out they need to figure out their terms BEFORE they present the plan, instead of halfway through the debate.

McCain and others haven’t yet figured out how to do this either. Not amnesty, a path to citizenship, that was already judged by their previous statements on amnesty. Too little, too late.

If I sound somewhat wistful of Clinton, I’m not stupid enough to forget his first two years in office, when he had a Democratic Congress and got plenty of Liberalism through. I also remember his last six years, where Conservative ideals finally started to get some traction, because the Republicans were at least pretending to be Conservative. A pretense they dropped when they had a Republican in office.

Snake307 on October 26, 2009 at 9:04 PM

Why does the public option need rebranding?

Because people caught on to what it was before it was passed. Why not call it Free Sex Lottery? It’ll pass for sure.
