NOW president “troubled” by Obama’s all-male sports outings
posted at 6:01 pm on October 26, 2009 by Allahpundit
Shhhh. No comments required. Just savor it.
“Relationships get built in those more informal settings,” O’Neill told ABC News, “and the relationships have a huge impact on the influence an individual has. We know what happens when we segregated whether it by race or whether it by gender — you end up with 1st class citizens and you end up with 2nd class citizens.”
O’Neill told ABC News’ Mike Callahan, “we need to see the White House leading the way for desegregating the work places all around the country and it is troubling.”…
“It’s extremely important now especially for the president to have as many women as men in his closest circle of advisors. … If women had been at the heads of the companies on Wall Street instead of these masters of the universe then we might not be in the predicament that we’re in today.”
Obama pushed back against this criticism last week but the fact that he’s suddenly inviting women along on his golf outings tells you who won the argument. Jonah Goldberg thinks NOW makes a fair point, as do I, although I also think he’s right that the remedies are apt to be inadequate: Guys who are used to pick-up games with Duke starters simply aren’t going to be as into it running the pick and roll against Hillary Clinton. If The One wants to avoid that scenario while dodging feminist critiques, his only option is to limit the games to friends only. No pols, no lobbyists, just personal acquaintances. Dial up a few of the Wizards and invite them over for three on three. Who would say no?
Exit question: Pretty soon Tapper’s going to stop getting called on at the White House press briefings, isn’t he? Click the image to watch.

It’s true that relationships are formed here and that not getting invited to the golf course can harm your career; however, as the wife of a man who golfs, even with men he works for, I disagree that skill level or gender matters in this game. Women have different balls and different places to tee off from.
And unlike basketball, you don’t need someone who anywhere near your level in the game. That’s what handicaps are for. Besides, most of the men seem to like to gamble and would prefer to take a poor player’s money.
As to her comment about women in Wall Street though, there’s nothing fair about saying women could possibly have averted a disaster she sees as caused by men. If however, her point was that the most qualified candidate should have been picked at that women might have been unfairly left out, then I could agree with her.

He made a big deal of filling out his men’s NCAA basketball bracket, but to my knowledge he never filled out one for the NCAA women’s tournament, and I find this extremely offensive and I can think of nothing better than congressional hearings on this matter. Cap and Trade, health care….everything else will have to be tabled until we can properly address this grossly insensitive display of male chauvinism.

Heh, without a doubt. In all seriousness though, Tapper is one of the reasons why the WH’s little “containment” approach will ultimately fail. Also, this little complaint by NOW, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that that organization is a joke. If I were NOW I’d try to aim my complaints toward Obama’s dithering on Afghanistan. I can’t think of a place more ready to cede the rights of women; a place where women stand on the precipice.

Either women are exactly the same as men and have the ability to screw things up just a royally (see: Pelosi, Nancy) or women are different and, just possibly, there’s a reason why he prefers to play golf with me.

NOW has ZERO (0) credibility. The organization is for promoting women and they did absolutely nothing for Hillary or Sarah and now they are whining about the White House boys club. Too bad NAGS! You could have supported two strong women in two different parties, but you didn’t. Now you get what you deserve so step to the back of the line and wait like the rest of us women. I am not a Hillary fan, but the NOW organization didn’t help her at all. They let the Obama campaign committee and their ilk get away with practically ruining Sarah Palin with all the lies that are still continuing today.

I thought NOW had fallen off the face of the earth. How wondrous that an all male pickup basketball game could revive them…could help them spring into relevancy…except…
How’s about girls in Afghanistan who are barred from school?
How’s about Middle Eastern women who get stoned if they are raped?
How’s about young girls who must submit to genital mutilation?
How’s about young girls here in the United States who are victims of “honor killings”?
Oh Please. Not. A. Peep. from the brave sisters at NOW.
I have as less respect for NOW than just about any supposed advocacy group in the world. NOW is an absolute and completely irrelevant embarrassment to our gender.
marybel on October 26, 2009 at 7:02 PM
I think the criticism is off base. I saw the Baseball All-Star game and I can guarantee you that the person who threw out the ceremonial pitch was channeling a girl. That pitch was so girlie that cameras panned away to shield the girlie man who threw it from embarrassment. Why it was so weak one would think the pitcherette was John Edwards. This is a little of what NOW has no problem with:
Several liberal political cartoonists have produced drawings of Condoleezza Rice that can only be characterized as racist, patronizing, and grotesque.
http://www.democracy-project.com/archives/000763.html
Matt Davies: A black couple, labeled “Civil Rights Movement” and “Women’s Movement” lament Rice under a banner reading “First Black, Female Warmonger Secretary of State — Historic Celebration.
Daryl Cagle: Rice as tiny moron with buck teeth lost in Colin Powell’s huge shoes. ”
Nate Allen in The State News, Michigan State University’s student newspaper (thanks to Steve Duane): Rice as empty suit. Condi’s in the hairdresser’s chair as Bush tells a oh-so-French-looking male hairdresser, “For the ceremony, can you give her that ‘I’ve done this all on my own’ look, instead of the ‘I nodded, never thought for myself and did what I was told’ look she’s got right now?”
