New Democratic attack ad: Hey, Doug Hoffman’s rich

posted at 3:44 pm on October 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

Clear evidence of who the Dems are really worried about in NY-23, brought to you by a party that now represents most of the country’s richest districts and which you’ll find here wringing its hands about debt while its congressional leaders are busy crafting the federal boondoggle to end all boondoggles. Kudos on not letting shame stand in the way of victory, guys. What’s next? Attack ads against Snowe and Collins for supporting the stimulus?

Speaking of which, guess who turned up at a Scozzafava rally over the weekend. She’s a dastardly RINO, you say? Tell it to the NRCC, which is prepared to shower Team Dede with another $300,000 in cash:

Two party officials tell POLITICO that the NRCC will continue to air TV ads propping up Scozzafava in the days leading up to the Nov. 3 contest and plans to keep
up a near relentless barrage of press releases slamming Hoffman…

The NRCC plans to spend between $200,000 and $300,000 on TV ads in the final week-and-a-half of the campaign. The ads will focus on Owens and Scozzafava and will not mention Hoffman…

[A GOP] official also noted that, as a Republican, Scozzafava would have a far larger base of support to tap into. As of April 1, voter registration in the district was 43 percent Republican, 31 percent Democrat and just 1 percent Conservative Party.

“I have yet to see a poll that shows a path to victory for the Conservative,” the official said. “They have no base.”

Conservatives have no base … among registered Republicans? Or does this unnamed idiot seriously believe Republicans are unwilling to cross over and vote third-party if the other options are two de facto Democrats, especially with names as big as Palin urging them to do so?

Actually, there is a viable line of attack raised in that Politico piece: Hoffman’s from outside the district, which not only leaves him open to carpetbagger attacks but which makes his apparent ignorance of local issues that much more potentially damaging. So why didn’t the Dems hit him on that instead of on this dopey class-warfare point?

Are you a high school drop out? Or are you just becoming wealthier by trading with your drug dealer more often?

unseen on October 26, 2009 at 5:38 PM

You do love to invent irrelevant examples, don’t you.

More evidence of the fact that you don’t have a real argument to support your long discredited position, and you know it.

Adam Smith, over 200 years ago proved that free trade always creates wealth. That is the position taken by almost every economist in the world. The only ones who disagree work for unions and the DNC, because they are paid to try and find reasons to support what is otherwise an unsupportable position.

Adam Smith’s proofs have never been challenged, much less disproven.

He has a classic car collection. This is a line of political attack, and from the party that just finished lionizing Ted Kennedy, that monument to corpulence and unearned wealth?

Truly strange and disturbing times.

10 years ago, people said the exact same thing about products from Korea. Before that it was Japan. Before that it was Taiwan.

MarkTheGreat on October 26, 2009 at 5:22 PM

I’m young, so maybe I missed something, but did products from those countries kill children?

Esthier on October 26, 2009 at 5:42 PM

I still have the first car I bought. It wasn’t expensive when I bought it, but I’ve sunk thousands of dollars and countless hours making it stronger and faster. I never plan on selling it.

They were accused of being unsafe, but for different reasons.

I don’t believe any products from China have killed anyone. There were products with excessive lead content, but those were caught by the existing regulatory agencies. Just as products from US manufacturers would have been.
Some pets were killed, but similar accidents have happened with US manufactured products as well.

MarkTheGreat on October 26, 2009 at 5:47 PM

I don’t believe the lead levels in the Chinese products were enough to kill. They were similar to the level that many US products used 40-50 years ago.

Free Trade works IF you have a level playing field… but it does NOT work if you self limit yourself with your own regulations, laws, and taxes.

We have exported wealth for many years (especialy in Petrodollars)… and we are now seeing the results of one side of “Free” trade overregulating…

We have to decide which business we are in. If we are in the business about feeling good about ourselves while our country gets crushed then I probably made the wrong decision. -Newt Gingrich

MarkTheGreat on October 26, 2009 at 5:48 PM

Again, I’m young. I prefer our current standards, and plenty of China products have killed people. I didn’t just start paying attention when they put lead in kids’ toys. There were a series of issues, one after another, add to that the fact that I personally dislike China and its oppressive government, and I see no reason to trust them with my nieces and nephews.

If I could boycott China altogether, I would, though I wouldn’t outlaw selling their products and wouldn’t even organize a boycott.

MarkTheGreat on October 26, 2009 at 5:47 PM

I think that’s true. The deaths were from small magnets, if I recall, which were not secured properly to the toys. However, they also caught several toys that had lead levels which could have caused serious harm or death to children.

BadgerHawk on October 26, 2009 at 5:58 PM

No it isn’t.

Free Trade works IF you have a level playing field… but it does NOT work if you self limit yourself with your own regulations, laws, and taxes.

Free trade always works. By definition, if I trade with you, it’s because you have something I want, and I have something that you want. I value what you have more than I value what I have, and vis-versa. Both parties benefit from free trade.

We have exported wealth for many years (especialy in Petrodollars)… and we are now seeing the results of one side of “Free” trade overregulating…

The buying of oil has not made us poor. We used that oil to better our lifestyles and to build products that we sold to the rest of the world.

If you want to worry about the balance of trade, put the blame where it actually belongs, the fact that the US govt has been running a deficit for decades, a deficit that has to be paid for some how.

You look for a scapegoat in the wrong place. It’s not the boardroom that’s to blame, it’s the halls of congress.

MarkTheGreat on October 26, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Hmmmm… bother to read? Is there anyplace I was blaming BUSINESS?

Lets see, three reasons why we are hosed…

NOT work if you self limit yourself with your own regulations, laws, and taxes.

And my POINT is that Free trade WILL work, UNLESS the Government mucks it up… as they are.

The buying of oil has not made us poor. We used that oil to better our lifestyles and to build products that we sold to the rest of the world.

HUH????? IF that oil had come from domestic sources, that wealth would still be here in America, working inside our economy…. it would have created jobs HERE, and profits HERE, instead of THERE…

Yes, for some years it saved some money, but NOW we could easily produce oil domesticly at the current price. But its our GOVERNMENT who is standing in the way.

Free Trade is NOT a panecea for all economic ills… especialy when its your own government who is creating the non level field on which you have to compete.

To me, and I’ve been wrong before, this shows hope. If the Democrats are attacking Hoffman, they have no respect for the “RINO” candidate. Now Hoffman will get some free publicity from the Democrats and have more people trying to find out who he is.

I doubt the ad will change many votes, since it’s just another attack ad and, at least, Hoffman isn’t another politician taking money and buying cars, it’s his money.

Personally, I hope Hoffman wins this thing, it will shake things up really, really nice.

Hoffman is reported to live in the district but his business of outside of it. If he didn’t live within the district he could not run as a Rep. Wasn’t Mrs. Clinton a real carpet bagger who moved to the state just in time to run.

Poor people rarely get elected to anything beyond mosquito control board. Just makes sense in a way…why would you elect a loser to run things if they can’t be successful in the community? Or, I guess one can simply “organize” said community and that makes up for it?

OSUBuciz1 on October 27, 2009 at 12:26 AM

Actually, there is a viable line of attack raised in that Politico piece: Hoffman’s from outside the district, which not only leaves him open to carpetbagger attacks but which makes his apparent ignorance of local issues that much more potentially damaging. So why didn’t the Dems hit him on that instead of on this dopey class-warfare point?

Ummm. Because he’s a local boy, born and raised in the 23rd District? He never left the 23rd, the 23rd left him in the 2K redistricting. So hammer him on that and you promptly alienate everyone that understands Hoffman to be one of the locals.

Besides, have you seen how large the 23rd is? It’s bigger than New Hampshire; and NH put together with Vermont is barely larger than the 23rd. The Southside 23rd is about as local to the Northside, as the West side is to the East Side at 150+ miles away. Heck, Newark is more ‘local’ to NYC than the Hamptons.

C’mon AP, you have to do better than that. And I ain’t even from Yankeeland!

And for what it’s worth, more workers always equals more wealth. That’s another concept that has been proven over and over again.

Unfortunately there will always be those who believe that the govt owes them a job, and that they shouldn’t have to compete for what they want. Especially against people who don’t look like them.

As for people who believe that all imports are poisoned. I leave such thinking to the dark depths of the conspiracy crazed where it belongs.
