NFL week 7 open thread

posted at 10:00 am on October 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The weekly open thread returns after a one-week hiatus caused by my travels last weekend; I just didn’t have time to get the post done while traveling back from WCPAC.  Missing this week would have been unthinkable, not with Brett Favre and the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings coming to Pittsburgh to play the 4-2 Steelers.  This is, of course, a loyalty test for me; I root for the Vikes because I live in Minneapolis and because their signing of Favre showed a commitment to victory this season.  But the Steelers are my team, baby.  They’re playing better the last three weeks, and the Vikes have only just missed losing their last couple of games.  I’m going with Pittsburgh, especially since Troy Polamalu returns today and shores up a defense that has finally found its footing.  I’ll call it 27-21, with the defense stopping a final drive by Favre with an interception.

Oh, and one last thing — I won’t be watching the game.  I’m taking the Little Admiral to the pumpkin farm for an afternoon of (chilly) fun.  I love my Steelers, but I wouldn’t miss these moments for anything.

I didn’t make any picks last week, but so far I’m 24-6 on the season, so I’m doing all right.  I’ll put that record on the line with these picks:

  • NY Jets at Oakland – This isn’t as ludicrous a game as it would have sounded three weeks ago.  Oakland finally played a good game against Philly, shutting them down and getting just enough offense to get by, while the Jets’ Mark Sanchez finally started looking like a rookie.  Still, I’m not sold on Oakland, and I think the Jets are good enough to recover.  24-14, Jets.
  • Arizona at NY Giants – The Giants come off of their first loss, while the Cardinals have beaten bad teams to look better.  The Giants get back on track at home, 31-17.
  • Philadelphia at Washington – The Monday night game is a big rivalry; both teams will be up for it.  After getting humbled by Oakland last week, the Eagles should outplay the Redskins, but it will be close, 28-24.
  • Chicago at Cincinnati – Both of these teams have looked better than expected this season; both of them had a bad week last Sunday.  Chicago has to play tough to keep within shooting distance of the Vikes in their division, and the Bengals have to win to keep Pittsburgh from climbing into first place if the Steelers beat the Vikes.  I think Chicago is hungrier and better prepared, and pick them to win it in a low-scoring game, 14-10.

Update: A few commenters think I should be boycotting the NFL on behalf of Rush.  I double-checked his fine site (and you should all be members, if you’re not already)  and I don’t see any call for a boycott from Rush himself.  I think what happened to Rush was horrid, and the lies told about him a great reminder that McCarthyism is alive and well, but my problem is much more with the media who participated in that than the NFL, which nonetheless owes Rush a huge apology.

Well, so far it’s been a lousy football weekend for me. My Red Raiders managed to lose to the lowly Aggies last night. Still not sure just how that happened.

Hopefully the Cowgirls will step it up against Atlanta today and give me a pick-me-up.

Oakland? I believe my boy’s peewee football team could beat the Raiders.

As a Bears fan I will be cheering for Pittsburgh as well. I like your prediction that Favre will end the game with an interception. In doing so he will add to his NFL record for the most career interceptions and make an unreachable record a little bit more unreachable. Go Bears!

What will it take for you dolts to stop watching this pile of garbage? KO is ok with you, Brett Favre’s multiple retirements, Michael Vick the dog torturer, and the treatment of Limbaugh is no big deal to you, seriously, I want to know.

Will anything short of an offensive line coming over and anally raping your first born stop you from consuming this filth? Or, are you all just good little brainwashed robots that will continue to fork over your hard earned money regardless of what the NFL does?

A sense of morality is what happened, sorry it has happened to you yet.

If you are fine with supporting Keith Olbermann, Brett Favre the drama queen, Michael Vick convicted felon, and the ideological bigot, Roger Goodell, go right ahead.

My question still hasn’t been answered. What will it take to convince people that the NFL is a horrible product and should not be consumed?

Blarg the Destroyer on October 25, 2009 at 10:58 AM

Shockingly they will be televising the Jets game here in upstate NY today rather than Buffalo, so I’m a happy camper. But that’s the late game. The only early game showing here is, amazingly, the Steelers game so I’ll get to watch both of the ones that Ed and I would be focusing on.

I’ll agree with Ed on both the Jets and the Giants winning, but I just don’t see how Pittsburgh holds off the Vikings.

Blarg the Destroyer on October 25, 2009 at 11:10 AM

…with the defense stopping a final drive by Favre with an interception.

I wish the Raven secondary (cough cough) had done that last week. While the Ravens have a bye week, maybe they can find a secondary that doesn’t resemble a swiss cheese.

Much as I hate to say it, Pittsburgh will win 35-24.

JohnnyD on October 25, 2009 at 11:12 AM

And the foul-mouthed degenerate pop-icon Fergie is part owner of the Miami Dolphins.

But Rush is considered beneath the “standards” of the NFL.

Your eyeballs on that screen blow a little butterfly kiss to a very dark force in this world, my friends.

By all means, watch, eat, and drink.

Informed consent. We all choose one path or the other. Do so openly.

jeff_from_mpls on October 25, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Actually, I’ll qualify my point.

I do expect that Rush is watching the NFL today because he loves the game.

But he can say that he took a stand against the immoral forces in the NFL, he named names, and he didn’t back down.

I’ll grant that many of you truly love the game for sentimental reasons. Godspeed to you. So I ask YOU to show as much courage in your opinions and attitudes as Rush does.

That means name names, call out the bad guys. Even if it puts your career on the line.

Do that, and you can watch the game without condemnation.

Otherwise you’re the big H. Hypocrite.

What will it take for you dolts to stop watching this pile of garbage?

I’m a dolt for watching what YOU consider garbage ?? Alrighty then.

KO is ok with you,

No, I don’t watch the games he does, and if it happens to be a Jets game, I listen on the radio.

Brett Favre’s multiple retirements,

Read my last post, Favre is a douche in my book.

Michael Vick the dog torturer,

Total scumbag, I think he should have been banned. I don’t care about “he done his time” arguement, me thinks a kid toucher would not be allowed back…..some crimes are just too vile.

and the treatment of Limbaugh is no big deal to you,

Oh, it is, but I’m sure Rush will get over it.

seriously, I want to know.
Will anything short of an offensive line coming over and anally raping your first born stop you from consuming this filth?

Dude, that’s harsh……may I suggest anger management ??

Or, are you all just good little brainwashed robots that will continue to fork over your hard earned money regardless of what the NFL does?

How do they derive any money if you are not a Nielson home? I was a Nielson home in the past (you’re welcome, Fox News) and without the equipment hooked up and reporting every night, nobody has any idea what anyone is watching.

trubble on October 25, 2009 at 11:41 AM

Yeah well Michael Moore is a pantload ahole who makes movies, but that won’t keep me from plopping on the couch and watch a flick from time to time, just not his.

Bishop on October 25, 2009 at 11:43 AM

They’re playing better the last three weeks, and the Vikes have only just missed losing their last couple of games. I’m going with Pittsburgh, especially since Troy Polamalu returns today and shores up a defense that has finally found its footing. I’ll call it 27-21, with the defense stopping a final drive by Favre with an interception.

Rovin’s Take:

Not to mention the last second hail mary pass that defeated the 49ers, (that everyone crowed about). The Vikes have a great team this year, and yes Farve has made a huge differece with his experience and leadership. But Farve can’t move around or out of the pocket like he used to, and if the Steelers put on the pressure, I’m guessing Farve throws two INT’s.

Since the honorable Mr. Morrissey has little favor in “The Team of the Eightys”, I’ll dance a little about this young team that’s showing promise under Singletary’s tutelage

After the 3-2 Niners got their lunch served to them by the Falcons 45-10 two weeks ago, a bye week came just at the right time to take on Houston who humbled the Bengals last week 28-17 when Schaub threw for 395 yards. Schaub already has 1810 yards thru the air this season second in the rankings behind only Big Ben’s 1887 yds. SF ranks in the middle of the league stats on passing defense allowing 234 yds per game, so the banged up DB’s will have to play a stellar game to keep the Niners in the game. Or, the offense has to keep Schaub and Co. on the sidelines with longs sustaining drives. I’m hoping the Niners pull this one out 24-20.

Disclosure: I’m a lifetime 49er Faithful that used to watch John Brodie at Kezar in the sixties. This is THE ONLY PART OF SAN FRANCISCO that I still hold dear to my heart. The rest of the city is a bastion of liberal disease that……well you all know this parting shot.

I really am in shock. The game wasn’t aired so I didn’t get to see it but I thought, if the game was going to be anything like last week, not watching it was no big deal. Then I woke up this morning and saw the score (52-30) and I had to triple check that it was A&M that won. Holy cow is all I can say. I’m hoping they broadcast the game today as they did last Sunday with the Kansas game. I would love to see the sweetness.

txag92 on October 25, 2009 at 11:53 AM

How do they derive any money if you are not a Nielson home?

trubble on October 25, 2009 at 11:41 AM

Do the Nielson ratings determine advertising rates for their own sake, or because they measure something else?

Careful now!

Frosty the Snowman was in the greenhouse, looking at the thermometer and he said, hey I hate thermometers because when they go up, it means I’m toast.

Well, Frosty, the thermometer isn’t what makes you toast. The thermometer is the sign of the thing that makes you toast. The thermometer is a dumb instrument that samples the environment to give a reading about the much bigger air mass that surrounds it.

These are crucial life’s lessons, my friend.

Well, I see the impressive “I am Spartacus!” righteous resolve about the NFL lasted an entire week. Wow–one whole week–impressive, really, I mean, really, it’s just impressive; sends a thrill down my leg; tears come to my eyes, we got ‘em on the run now.

My guess is that with this level of resolve we would have inched our way to Christmas, 1941 before throwing in the towel against the Japanese (you know, after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor…). Too hard. Well, you guys can kiss my ___.

Yeah, I’d say the leftists probably do have our number. Resolve matters, determination matters–everything else is just sound and fury, signifying nothing. Just start humming “mmm mmm mmm” right now, before your kids do.

The majority of NFL players and owners do an extraordinary amount of good things with the money that they make from their product. An added bonus is that they spend their money freely and often, thus greasing the gears of capitalism.

If that’s not good enough for you, there’s always NASCAR. There should be one hell of a good race at Martinsville starting shortly.

I intend to wear out my remote control enjoying NFL and NASCAR.

Enjoy your bitterness, y’all.

BTW the Patriots-Bucs game isn’t the only big show in London today-in just a couple of hours at the Royal Albert Hall there will be a one-time charity concert reuniting The Faces. Members Ian Maclagan, Kenney Jones and Ron Wood will all be there, but Rod Stewart won’t; assorted guest vocalists will do his parts. And the late Ronnie Lane’s bass chair will be filled by Bill Wyman.

The concert is a benefit for the PRS (Performing Right Society) for Music Members’ Benevolent Fund. “This will be so special for us, staging a reunion for such a wonderful and prestigious event,” said Wood when the announcement of the concert was made. “Sadly Ronnie Lane can’t be with us, but I’m sure he will be there in spirit, God bless him.”[

The rest of ya’–I don’t care what Rush says or wants, it’s really not about him, either pro or con. It’s about conservatives being equals in all spheres of life; it’s about resolve and determination.

I find it hard to believe that people who can easily see that doing nothing on the foreign scene when one’s opponents cross the line leads only to further trouble down the road seem to have a blind spot when it comes to drawing the line domestically. Sad.

By all means, watch the games. Just don’t expect me to think this is a proper thing for conservatives to gather around in a “band of brothers” spirit, because it no longer is.

It’s not about whether or not a practical result emerges–it’s about the resolve, the resolve we signal to ourselves, and to others; the resolve that says “this far and no farther”; the resolve that, as in “broken windows” policing, stops big trouble from happening by being resolute against the small ones; a resolve that solves problems, not causes them, by making those who transgress realize that a fight will be had and there will be no cheap and easy kills; a noble, manful resolve; and I question whether it is to be had.

Enjoy your games.

What’s been lost in all the brouhaha over the Saints’ offense is that their Defense has greatly improved.

Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 12:51 PM

Saints Defense has improved. We would like to thank the Jets for Vilma at linebacker and the Vikes for Sharper at defensive back.

Dire Straits on October 25, 2009 at 1:08 PM

After the first two possessions, this isn’t looking like a cake walk for either of them, but the Steelers are definitely holding their own more than I was expecting. Should be a good game if it keeps going this way.

Jazz Shaw on October 25, 2009 at 1:12 PM

There’s an article in the WashingtonPost today about Saints’ defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and how he had really wanted the Redskins’ head coaching job. I wonder what the Redskins’ record would be now if Williams had gotten the top job, instead of Zorn?

Yossarian on October 25, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Williams deserves a lot of credit for turning the Saints D around, but I’m not sure he’s “head coach” material-his one head job was at Buffalo and his record there was 17-31. Ironically, Saints head coach Sean Payton took a $250,000 pay cut so Williams would join his team.

The ironic thing about today’s game in Miami is that the Dolphins were the other team in the Drew Brees Sweepstakes a few years back, but didn’t believe Drew could recover from his injury.

Since passing on him they are on their 7th QB.

Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Um, yeah. Whatever.

Didn’t mean to waste your time.

I wish you an afternoon of racial sensitivity and multicultural diversity. What more could a fellow like you ask for?

Godspeed, son.

jeff_from_mpls on October 25, 2009 at 1:21 PM

What will it take for you dolts to stop watching this pile of garbage? KO is ok with you, Brett Favre’s multiple retirements, Michael Vick the dog torturer, and the treatment of Limbaugh is no big deal to you, seriously, I want to know.

Will anything short of an offensive line coming over and anally raping your first born stop you from consuming this filth? Or, are you all just good little brainwashed robots that will continue to fork over your hard earned money regardless of what the NFL does?

Blarg the Destroyer on October 25, 2009 at 10:48 AM

If the choice is between the NFL and a nasty, serially enraged person such as yourself, I would choose the NFL every time.

Edouard on October 25, 2009 at 1:51 PM

New England now leading the hapless Bucs, 21-0. Since losing to Denver in OT 2 weeks ago, the team has now scored 80 unanswered points-the last time a team did that was the 1985 Bears.

Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 1:59 PM

I’m sorry, but that wasn’t the Texas Tech I thought I knew…

Go ‘boys.

mimi1220 on October 25, 2009 at 2:07 PM

Vikings up 7-3 in the 2nd quarter. The game is every bit as close as the score makes it sound. Very back and forth.

I hear ya, that was embarrassing. I had to cover up the TT on my cap today.

You might need a refill on your medication.

Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 1:59 PM

To be fair, my bucs shouldn’t count. They really aren’t an NFL team this year.

lorien1973 on October 25, 2009 at 2:14 PM

I prefer watching Australian football. The one with the guy in the end zone who wears an all white suit.

That’s fun.

madmonkphotog on October 25, 2009 at 2:15 PM

The Pats finally gave up a TD. Halftime score is 21-7.

Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 2:33 PM

My prediction is that the Steelers:

WILL LOSE

go vikes.

therightscoop on October 25, 2009 at 2:38 PM

Vikings-Steelers is a great game so far. One time soon a Vike defender is gonna get an interception off Ben, they’ve certainly had a lot of chances.

TeeDee on October 25, 2009 at 2:54 PM

Stop preaching at those of us who love the game and have loved it all of their lives. I’m from a football family, not pro, but HS and college, watching, of course, not playing myself, and I love this time of year.

Do what you gotta do, boycott the NFL, but cut out the righteous indignation cr@p.

TeeDee on October 25, 2009 at 3:07 PM

Nailbiter. Steelers just coughed up the ball on the Vikings 3. One score game with plenty of time left.

Jazz Shaw on October 25, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Ed, you pay off the refs? That tripping call taking a Vikings touchdown off the board was total b.s.

Typical NFL pro-Steelers reffing.

WannabeAnglican on October 25, 2009 at 3:44 PM

And after the fumble return, that was a 14 point b. s. call. Disgusting.

I’ve come close to swearing off the NFL because of bull manure like that.

WannabeAnglican on October 25, 2009 at 3:46 PM

Brett Favre !!!!!

BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA !!!!

Jerome Horwitz on October 25, 2009 at 3:47 PM

And of course the Vikings turn around and return the kickoff for a TD. Still a three point game. Oh, and they wiped out a ref on the return. Line Judge is taken to the locker rooms.

Jazz Shaw on October 25, 2009 at 3:51 PM

Just saw the replay of the Line Judge getting steamrolled in the Steelers game. Hope he’s OK.

Meanwhile across the pond, Tom Brady tied the long standing Drew Bledsoe franchise mark for 300 yard passing games. Pats about to win 35-7 with 1:50 left in the game.

Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 3:59 PM

He’s OK, they rubbed some dirt on it, and he walked it off.

Now, do I stick with this game, or switch to the Jets ???

Jerome Horwitz on October 25, 2009 at 4:06 PM

Nevermind…….game ovah.

A Favre INT……and a nice attempt for a tackle there….NOT

Jerome Horwitz on October 25, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Woo Hoo!!!! Man, what a game. Go Steelers!!!!

disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Oh, and one last thing — I won’t be watching the game. I’m taking the Little Admiral to the pumpkin farm for an afternoon of (chilly) fun. I love my Steelers, but I wouldn’t miss these moments for anything.

Play of the week–no contest.

Beaglemom on October 25, 2009 at 4:11 PM

I’ll call it 27-21, with the defense stopping a final drive by Favre with an interception.

Got any stock tips for me today Ed? You’re on a roll.
