NFL week 7 open thread
posted at 10:00 am on October 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The weekly open thread returns after a one-week hiatus caused by my travels last weekend; I just didn’t have time to get the post done while traveling back from WCPAC. Missing this week would have been unthinkable, not with Brett Favre and the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings coming to Pittsburgh to play the 4-2 Steelers. This is, of course, a loyalty test for me; I root for the Vikes because I live in Minneapolis and because their signing of Favre showed a commitment to victory this season. But the Steelers are my team, baby. They’re playing better the last three weeks, and the Vikes have only just missed losing their last couple of games. I’m going with Pittsburgh, especially since Troy Polamalu returns today and shores up a defense that has finally found its footing. I’ll call it 27-21, with the defense stopping a final drive by Favre with an interception.
Oh, and one last thing — I won’t be watching the game. I’m taking the Little Admiral to the pumpkin farm for an afternoon of (chilly) fun. I love my Steelers, but I wouldn’t miss these moments for anything.
I didn’t make any picks last week, but so far I’m 24-6 on the season, so I’m doing all right. I’ll put that record on the line with these picks:
- NY Jets at Oakland – This isn’t as ludicrous a game as it would have sounded three weeks ago. Oakland finally played a good game against Philly, shutting them down and getting just enough offense to get by, while the Jets’ Mark Sanchez finally started looking like a rookie. Still, I’m not sold on Oakland, and I think the Jets are good enough to recover. 24-14, Jets.
- Arizona at NY Giants – The Giants come off of their first loss, while the Cardinals have beaten bad teams to look better. The Giants get back on track at home, 31-17.
- Philadelphia at Washington – The Monday night game is a big rivalry; both teams will be up for it. After getting humbled by Oakland last week, the Eagles should outplay the Redskins, but it will be close, 28-24.
- Chicago at Cincinnati – Both of these teams have looked better than expected this season; both of them had a bad week last Sunday. Chicago has to play tough to keep within shooting distance of the Vikes in their division, and the Bengals have to win to keep Pittsburgh from climbing into first place if the Steelers beat the Vikes. I think Chicago is hungrier and better prepared, and pick them to win it in a low-scoring game, 14-10.
Update: A few commenters think I should be boycotting the NFL on behalf of Rush. I double-checked his fine site (and you should all be members, if you’re not already) and I don’t see any call for a boycott from Rush himself. I think what happened to Rush was horrid, and the lies told about him a great reminder that McCarthyism is alive and well, but my problem is much more with the media who participated in that than the NFL, which nonetheless owes Rush a huge apology.

Jets off to a pretty strong start already. Early score and driving again.
Jazz Shaw on October 25, 2009 at 4:21 PM
Wow, Miami draws first blood-Drew Brees throws a rare pick deep in his own territory. On the next play, former Saint Ricky Williams takes it in.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 4:41 PM
Sanchez’s TD was sweet! Now this is the Jets comin’ back…
Good to see it’s against the Raiders too…my “nemesis” at work is a big Oakland fan, so I hope he’s needing a change of undies about now :D
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 4:47 PM
Miami seems to have Drew Brees’ number so far. He hasn’t been able to do much. The Saints ran the kickoff return back something like 87 yards, but they ended up only getting 3 out of it.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Ricky Williams just ran for a 68 yard TD. Fish now up 13-3.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 4:51 PM
But yet again, Jetboy, did you notice how Sanchez was waving the ball around in one hand and stumbled and plugged it into the turf? They just can NOT teach that kid to tuck the darned ball away. Going to bite us in the butt again one of these days.
Jazz Shaw on October 25, 2009 at 4:52 PM
Since it was a bye week for the Ravens, me, my wife and our bk lab took a nice long walk along the North Central Rail Trail. It’s a beautiful day in the Mid Atlantic region. I put the game on the radio on the way home and Wow! That Steelers-Vilings game sounded unbelievable! Just saw some highlights on Fox.
And Ed, not only did you get the Steelers score right, you called the INT too!! You probably could find a nice pearl in one of those punkin’s you were picking.
I still hate that Pittsburgh won and now you know why I don’t gamble….
JohnnyD on October 25, 2009 at 4:53 PM
heh, I knew you’d pick up on that Jazz…Yeah, you’re right, but it worked out well. This time.
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 4:55 PM
breaking news: the Redskins are not losing to a LOSING team.
kelley in virginia on October 25, 2009 at 4:57 PM
Bears are looking like a high school team against the Mighty Bengals. Lovie Smith could get out-coached by a soccer coach.
Jaibones on October 25, 2009 at 5:10 PM
It’s a good thing that I don’t gamble. What has gotten into the Fish this week?

Drew’s paases.

JohnnyD on October 25, 2009 at 5:23 PM
Saints now in a big hole, down 23-3, and almost just had their 3rd turnover. They looked like they were finally starting to settle down, then Brees fumbled but got it back.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 5:24 PM
New Orleans should have the decency to finish the season undefeated after showing the poor taste to beat both the Jets and the Giants. Pffffft.
Jazz Shaw on October 25, 2009 at 5:29 PM
Come to think of it Jaibones, it’s time to change the channel to the Duece and watch soccer. Might just see a better coached game.
JohnnyD on October 25, 2009 at 5:31 PM
I’m curious how the hopefully best of three Ravens-Steelers series goes this year. Last year, the games were only a one big play difference. I was at the Monday night overtime game last year. We’ll both have to keep up with Cinci though to see that happen again. Flacco’s looking better this year at times, much like Big Ben in his second year.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 5:46 PM
Jeez, I’m thinking those Bears are really glad they’re not facing Mike Ditka in that half-time locker room right now.

Saints appeared to score a TD but the officials over-ruled it….despite making a totally opposite call on a similar play in another game a few weeks ago.
But with one play, 5 seconds and no time outs left, Brees ran it in from the 1 yard line on a quarterback sneak. Halftime score 24-10 Miami.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 5:57 PM
OK Miami killed us the first half except for the last 3 minutes. Miami had a chance to put it away and we stopped them. If we come our on the second half playing like we did the last part of the first half we could win, if we play like most of the first half, we will be trampled on.
Teleycoman on October 25, 2009 at 6:03 PM
Come out not come our, sorry trying to type fast to get back to the TV.
Teleycoman on October 25, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Woo Hoo!
Hey Bears, 4 and 2 is gutsy, 4 and 6 is dumb.
Learn the difference.
CPT. Charles on October 25, 2009 at 6:10 PM
The Saints have a heartbeat left here.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Saints coming back with a bang-they just intercepted a pass and ran it back for a TD. All of a sudden, it’s 24-17 Miami with 13:56 left in the 3rd.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 6:18 PM
The Saints have now scored 14 unanswered points in 1:06.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 6:21 PM
WHO DEY!!!
CPT. Charles on October 25, 2009 at 6:21 PM
Well, so much for that drive.
Hmmmm.
Wonder if the Bengals can break the ’50′ ceiling today?
CPT. Charles on October 25, 2009 at 6:29 PM
Intercepted in the endzone for the Saints. So close, yet so far away.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 6:30 PM
Saints score again-now 27-24 Miami, nearly the end of the 3rd. They fired up their running game on this last drive capped by a short Drew Brees TD pass to Marques Colston.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 6:50 PM
This Saints-Dolphins game is fun to watch. 27-23 still in the third. Turnovers galour in this game.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 6:50 PM
Jets-38
Raiders-”The BIG ZERO”
I’m gonna have a lot of fun at work tomorrow…
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 6:59 PM
Sounds like a good game going there…Hope the ‘aints can beat Miami…We get ‘em next week again at home. I’m guessing the “wildcat” isn’t working for the fish…
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 7:02 PM
Thumbs up. It’s always fun to have a favorite team to win over an office nemesis’s team. Have fun tomorrow.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 7:03 PM
The ran it quite a bit in the first half-mixed results.
Saints D coordinator Gregg Williams is earning his paycheck today.
Best play so far in the second half was a great Brees to Jerome Shockey number. Shockey had a Dolphins defender in his face and straight-armed him downfield for over 50 yards.
Now 34-31 Miami, Saints have the ball with just over 12 minutes left.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 7:08 PM
Thanks dis…It’s the boss’s son, so I can’t gloat too much…we just really don’t like each other. It’s bad. But it’ll be nice to smile about something on a Monday morning at least :) ’cause I know it’s gonna be painful for him the whole day!
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 7:09 PM
Hey Chi-town thanks for cutting loose Benson.
WHO DEY!!!
CPT. Charles on October 25, 2009 at 7:10 PM
Gotta love close games like that…and a good comeback. Be sure to post the final score…all I’m getting now is the end of the Atlanta/Cowboys game here.
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 7:11 PM
QB sneak for a TD by Drew Brees…Saints now lead for the first time in the game.
But Carney missed the extra point, so it’s only a 3 point lead, 37-34. Less than 10 minutes to go.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 7:14 PM
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 7:18 PM
I wrote here that Pittsburgh vs. Vikings lived up to the hype, unlike the Saints-Giants game a week ago. Don’t be surprised if they meet in Miami in February.
LFRGary on October 25, 2009 at 7:21 PM
Is there a worse QB in the NFL right now than JaMarcus Russell?
He’s absolutely horrible.
BallisticBob on October 25, 2009 at 7:25 PM
Yeah FOX is on the Saints game now…heh, that wildcat still gives me the shivers after that Gang Green loss to the fishies. Next week is all about redemption! I’ll be there, and I’d like to leave the Meadowlands with a good drunk buzz
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 7:26 PM
Saints had 1st and goal and had to settle for a FG…Now a 6 point Saints lead, 40-34 with 3:23 remaining.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 7:31 PM
I’d feel a lot better if the Saints had that missed extra point right now.
exception on October 25, 2009 at 7:39 PM
Never mind.
exception on October 25, 2009 at 7:40 PM
Saints intercept a 4th down Miami pass and run it back…2 point conversion failed.
What a comeback-the Saints are definitely for real.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 7:42 PM
Nice, probable win now, Saints. The game looked ugly right before the half. That offense looks to be working on all cylinders beyond the turnovers.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Saints look like they have this. Still undefeated. And they were down what…21 or 24 points earlier on?
JetBoy on October 25, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Final score New Orleans 46, Miami 34.
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 7:52 PM
The entire NBC crew agree that tripping call that took a Vikings TD off the board was a travesty.
(I’d never thought I’d agree with Olberdork on anything.)
I am past fed up with NFL favoritism toward the Steelers.
WannabeAnglican on October 25, 2009 at 7:53 PM
So now only Saints, Colt, and Broncos are undefeated?
exception on October 25, 2009 at 7:53 PM
WE WON! WHO DAT! Great game Miami!
Teleycoman on October 25, 2009 at 7:54 PM
Saints were down 24-3 in the 2nd quarter. Gotta give them credit, they stuck to their game plan, and instead of going pass-crazy when they got behind big they kept their running game going.
Brees was held to less than 300 yards (!) but had 2 rushing TDs as I recall.)
Del Dolemonte on October 25, 2009 at 7:54 PM
Shockey did well…’Grats to the Saints fans…
Thanks fer the updates on that game del!

Piss on the racist ass NFL. I listening to my podcasts of Rush and other real people.
jarhead0311 on October 25, 2009 at 7:57 PM
Jarhead you miss the point, but Rush did not. If you like football enjoy the games do not let the media drive you away. Rush still goes to the games, be bigger than the small minds that killed his deal as he did.
GO SAINTS!
Teleycoman on October 25, 2009 at 8:05 PM
yet, The Redskins did not lose today. Hail.
kelley in virginia on October 25, 2009 at 8:07 PM
The Cowboys were lucky. They played stupid, penalty-filled football. Who coaches these guys anyway?
Austin was awesome though. What a discovery he is.
WannabeAnglican on October 25, 2009 at 8:09 PM
I am so happy, I am so happy! Hooray! Next Monday, I’ll be watching at the local bar when they play Atlanta! :) :) :)
Theophile on October 25, 2009 at 8:12 PM
If the Eagles play like they did last week, you may have nothing to worry about tomorrow.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 8:12 PM
Would you be a Cowboys fan?
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 8:22 PM
I am a Cowboys fan, but they are annoying me this season.
WannabeAnglican on October 25, 2009 at 8:26 PM
Okay that explains the Steelers animosity. There are two channels on youtube you may want to check out. CowboyTD and TheDallasCowboyShow. One from a college student, and the other from a long time fan. Both pro-Dallas. Although, the pro Romo question has been up in the air for a while. Agree though that Austin is a good find/go to guy.
disillusioned on October 25, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Yikes, called that one wrong, Ed! The Bengals roll 45-10 as Cedric Benson gets some revenge against his old team. Now Cincy is 5-2, tied with the Steelers for the AFC North (they actually are ahead in division record and head-to-head matchups).
Who Dey, baby!
Wellsy on October 25, 2009 at 9:29 PM
WOW… that Saints game was one of the top 10 games I’ve watched in my life. You’d never know from the score how hard the defenses BOTH played or how close it really was…
That’s what football is all about.
Diogenes of Sinope on October 25, 2009 at 10:17 PM
Ditto on that in the Cardinals @ Giants game. That game had me on the edge of my seat just about the whole time.
It was close though towards the end. Arizona even had a running game going!
RedbonePro on October 26, 2009 at 12:59 AM
got back from the Giants game a short time ago. nothing to cheer about.
Willie on October 26, 2009 at 1:39 AM
Wow Ed, Couldn’t have been more wrong about them Bengals. They wer’re on fire!
loudmouth883 on October 26, 2009 at 7:51 AM
At the risk of taking some hits, let me say congrats to the Patriots for beating the Tampa Bay socialists t-ball team.
Tom Terrific is showing signs of getting back into his pre-injury form. Go Pats!
BTW, congrats to the Saints for their 22 unanswered points in a thrilling come-from-behind road victory in Miami. Hope y’all make it to the next Super Bowl!
