Video: The divorce ban initiative in California

posted at 6:42 pm on October 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Morgen and John at Verum Serum have the backstory details on this, so be sure to read it all there, but let me boil it down for you. Some of the people who resent the hell out of the majority of voters in California who voted to keep the traditional definition of marriage have launched their own new initiative to protect marriage … by banning all divorces. It takes a special kind of elitist to make the supporting web video, which intends to insult mainstream Californians who passed Proposition 8 by a 52%-48% margin in 2008, which presumes that the only people who supported the original initiative were ignorant rubes and religious fanatics.

Er, how many Democrats are there in California’s state legislature?  In that same election, Barack Obama won 61% of the same vote, against just 37% for John McCain.  Methinks that this effort says a lot more about its backers than Prop 8′s.

If they had an initiative to ban no-fault divorce, that might gain some traction.  Otherwise, this will be a gigantic waste of time and money, neither of which California can afford, just to accomplish what Prop 8 critics could have succeeded in doing with the YouTube video, which is insult everyone’s intelligence.

They should have stuck to getting the state out of the marriage business altogether.

Now, are we sure this wasn’t produced by a university somewhere who wanted give the students in the “Logical Fallacies 101″ course

Er, universities don’t teach logical fallacies anymore.

Not at all. Never. Not in any way, shape, or form.

That was Step 1 in the left-wing indoctrination take-over: declare “logic” (and “facts) to be a tool of the Straight White Patriarchy to oppress Teh Other.

After that, the rest was easy.

dicentra63 on October 24, 2009 at 8:38 PM

I probably should rewrite this. I take the institution of marriage seriously. I’m not married but I wouldn’t marry someone who I wasn’t 100 percent commited to. I’m looking for the right man to marry whom I will be 100% committed to and who will be 100% committed to me.

Heh. Although I said it in jest, do keep in mind that the same mentality that kept people from (pretty much) divorcing at whim also had some rather ugly side effects. Yeah, wifey couldn’t hook up with some sleazeball lawyer and take half of everything (and almost surely the kids as well)…but she also couldn’t vote or own property or have any kind of career besides being a self-propelled incubator.

Take a close look at the staff of your local public schools – both K-12 and college. Same goes for supporters of Obumma’care’, the bailout, etc. This idiocy is not being implanted in people’s brains by space aliens.

My own alma mater was, for the most part, free of liberal nonsense and subscribers to same on the staff, but I’m see small hints of creeping darkness in my younger siblings’ schools. Nothing besides mildly annoying PC nonsense and buzzwords…yet.

I’d love to cheer this on but my survival instinct stops me.

CambellBrown on October 24, 2009 at 8:22 PM

Certainly understandable. Unfortunately in our world, there are situations where “at-fault” would be a horrible injustice. Abandonment, mental abuse, and other types of abuse are all valid reasons for divorce. It’s not a good situation, but a fact of life in our sinful world. That makes this parody of justice even more twisted. Yet somehow those who hated Prop 8 would rather perpetrate this nonsense.

I couldnt take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to my God and on my mothers
Grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore that I would love you to the end of time!

So now Im praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I dont think that I can really survive
Ill never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
Im praying for the end of time
Its all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time
With you!!!

Each of us has the power to make our lives not centered on putting ourselves first and gratifying our every desire and avoiding every sacrifice.

This is not a government issue, but an issue of personal responsibility.

What can we do to change this?

Our culture is formed by each of us, by what we each choose to say and do, and not say and do, or by our indifference toward the impact our words and deeds, or the lack of them, have on others. And the more selfish and irresponsible each of us is, the more we are promoting a selfish and irresponsible culture and government. And, what is more important to our nation than the degree to which each of us as citizens is moral and ethical in our words and deeds?

This is not a government issue. This is an issue of personal responsibility. And where does one learn personal responsibility if not from one’s parents?

And thus, I return to the importance of marriage. A good marriage does not necessarily result in good children, but it’s so much better for children to learn responsibility, morals and ethical behavior from good parents who demonstrate it themselves than for children to learn this the hard way, from bad parents who demonstrate just the opposite.

Loxodonta on October 24, 2009 at 9:19 PM

You know…Meatloaf has a string of songs about marriage…

Will you raise me up, will you help me down?
Will you get me right out of this God forsaken town?
Will you make it all a little less cold?

[Boy]
I can do that. Oh I can do that.

[Girl]
Will you cater to every fantasy I’ve got?
Will you hose me down with holy water, if I get too hot? Hot!
Will you take me places I’ve never known?

[Boy]
Now I can do that! Oh oh now, I can do that!

[Girl]
After awhile you’ll forget everything.
It was a brief interlude
And a midsummer night’s fling,
And you’ll see that it’s time to move on.

[Boy]
I won’t do that. I won’t do that.

[Girl}
I know the territory, I’ve been around,
It’ll all turn to dust and will all fall down,
Sooner or later, you’ll be screwing around.

I’d do anything for love.

Jeff2161 on October 24, 2009 at 9:20 PM

If it were to pass (which it won’t). A lot of people would stop getting married by the state and opt for domestic partnerships and private contracts. That would be a win for gay groups since it would put more straight couples in a similar legal situation.

The goal of the initiative and the ads seems to be to satirize the Prop 8 arguments–slippery slope, religious teaching, historical precedent–hoping that the next time a gay marriage measure is on the ballot that the equation of a gay marriage ban with protecting existing marriages will be less persuasive.

dedalus on October 24, 2009 at 8:36 PM

… or they’d get divorced in Las Vegas.

I’m thinking it might well pass. After all, we’ll have the liberals rooting for it with their ads, and the conservatives certainly feel (from my personal experience as to the politics of participants) that divorce isn’t an option for dealing with marital discord, and the churches all are (supposedly) against divorce, so who’s going to run ads against this proposition? People who want to get out of a “so long as you both shall live” oral contract?

I don’t see anyone. It’s like one of those finger puzzles — once you put the fingers in, there’s no easy way to pull them out.

Sometimes, satirization is so close to reality that you cannot tell the satire from the reality. So it goes here.

unclesmrgol on October 24, 2009 at 9:23 PM

This is actually the first bit of honesty I’ve seen in talking about Biblical marriage. I understand this is mockery, but that doesn’t mean they are incorrect.

As I always say: Call it all a “civil union.” Toss “marriage” back to religious institutions. Problem solved. (I don’t care what the State calls my marriage.)

Amazing how the Left changes its value system as needed, isn’t it?

Date rape is bad unless the rapist makes movies some people like. Etc. and so forth.

This is just another example of Leftism skewing the Scripture they disregard. Divorce IS allowable in the Bible under certain circumstances, as I understand it. That gets me n Dutch with other Christians, but I can make a case for divorce. The Left, being absolutists (until they need to stop being that way for people like Polanski) will never understand the God who created us all.

It’s allowable if the spouse commited adultery. Actually it’s allowable for any offense (though it is considered a sin unless adultery was invovled but, you can be forigiven). It’s just that you can’t get married to another person unless it was your spouse that commited the adultery.

I take the Bible as a whole, and try living my life among all those pages of wisdom. Because Jesus said He didn’t come to abolish the Law, I have to consider in my own mind, and for myself, the Hebrew Scriptures remain in force. God said in His Bible that all things will pass away but His Word never will. For me, I see the OT as still in full effect, changed now in certain places (like animal sacrifices) after the First Advent.

Just my view, of course.

MeatHeadinCA on October 24, 2009 at 10:22 PM

There was a study done a few years ago by a lesbian sociologist, who concluded gay marriage was a bad idea.

I can’t offer a webpage because I never saved the location, but the paper was an interesting read. I can’t recall her name, either.

She basically asserted that divorce is truly bad idea. Ease of divorce causes serious social problems, like the spouse who earns less is forced into disadvantage that takes years to recover. According to the dissertation, adding gay marriage to the mix will further damage society as a whole.

For further evidence, she cited that gays tend to be very promiscuous, most among gay men. That raises risk of social disease and other societal problems.

Sorry I can’t give documentation here, but if I never read the piece I wouldn’t state what I just did.

Liam on October 24, 2009 at 10:23 PM

MeatHeadinCA on October 24, 2009 at 10:26 PM

Here’s some moral guidance for you, Ed:

Oil on the wounds–A response to the blight of abortion and divorce

“The Church’s ethical judgement concerning abortion and divorce is clear and well-known to everyone: they are grave sins which – in various ways and with due evaluation of subjective responsibilities – injure the dignity of the human person, involve a profound injustice in human and social relationships, and offend God Himself, the guarantor of the marital bond and the architect of life,” he [the Pope] said.

I wouldn’t put the two in the same sentence… but you might want to sign up for that “rescuemarriage.org” mailing list.

Not to disparage her, but mine went from me to a coke head half her age who beat her and almost broke her leg by slamming it in the door of their car. Neighbors called police several times for the violence of their fights (my adult children have told me dribs and drabs). Not to claim I was perfect, and I’m responsible in whatever measure my ex feels is right for her divorcing me.

In the end, I wish she married someone better than me instead of with whom she made vows.

To me, it’s insane to go from someone you don’t like to someone less than that. In a way, I like taking that as a left-handed compliment. Maybe that’s my pride, but I’m not the one who went down a lower road.

States can do whatever they want to do with marriage. I believe, however, that marriage laws (and divorce laws) will profoundly affect life in that state.

The problem with many divorces (and divorce laws) is that people are asking the state to undo their horrifying lack of discernment in the selection of a marriage partner. It will never be without consequence, physically, mentally or emotionally.

Sounds like your situation is really bad, err, well the situation of your ex. At least your children are older and hopefully won’t be in danger.

It’s not lack of discernment always. Sometimes people just stop working on their marriage.

MeatHeadinCA on October 24, 2009 at 10:41 PM

First, I don’t get it.

Second, the people who made this pathetic turn-off are such bitter Klingons that whatever sympathy I had for their cause is gone.

Our children were adults when she moved out that final time. It was best, really, because things became unrecoverable no matter how much I tried. I guess my ex tried, too. If she did (which I don’t believe but that’s my view alone), I didn’t see it.

It’s awful for me to say, but, divorce is the best thing she ever did for me.

That’s not awful. That may very likely be the truth. You now have an opportunity to grow and move on. Best of luck to you.

MeatHeadinCA on October 24, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Thanks!

I did move on; the divorce was years ago.

I learned, for myself, peace of mind is greater than love.

I just hope no one ever goes through what I did; I wish all marriages be happy. Still, banning divorce is a bad thing. Sometimes it needs to be done.

Between you and me, I still love my ex and always will. I refuse to speak to her, and we’ll never again be together on this Earth. We talked a year-or-so ago, and I apologized which she accepted. I got no apologies back, which is okay.

Things are what they are. Still, I love her and always will.

Peace of mind is the greatest feeling of all, even when the one a man loves never loved him back.
