Quote of the Day
posted at 9:00 pm on October 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
“People familiar with the internal debates say Mr. Obama rejected a strictly counter-terror approach during White House deliberations in early October. One official said Pentagon strategists were asked to draft brief written arguments making the best case for each strategy, but the strategists had difficulties writing out a credible case for the counter-terror approach — prompting members of Mr. Biden’s staff to step in and write the document themselves.”

Well, hasn’t Michael Yon suggested that a counter-terrorism approach won’t work in Afghanistan anyways? I believe his analogy was something to the effect of using Predator strikes to kill mosquitos. Sure, the mosquitos you hit die, but you’ll never be rid of them that way.

A Marine Corps Sergeant Major Speaks:
Writing at a brand new blog created by John Bernard, Jim Sauer, a retired Marine Corps Sergeant Major and combat veteran with over thirty years of service (including post-retirement work in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel), offers a most robust and enlightening commentary on “counterinsurgency,” Afghanistan, Iraq, Islam, “hearts and minds,” “our geniuses,” and more.
There is this misconception of Afghanistan in particular (and Islam in general) that somehow we can bring Central Asia (and the rest of the Islamic world) kicking and screaming into the 21st Century through good will. This is simply not the case. There is no amount of money to spend, infrastructure to build, schools to provide, hospitals to heal, or good will that Americans can display toward the Afghan people that will produce a lasting effect. I was once told by an accomplished Afghan intelligence analyst that, “you can rent an Afghan, but you can’t buy him.”
COIN may be a legitimate strategy in a limited sense when the “insurgents” are seen as outsiders – or at least trouble makers with a foreign ideology – by the native population in a fixed geographic region. However, the insurgency we face is not limited to Afghanistan. It is a global movement.
President Obama and General McCrystal need to review their history. When you treat the Afghans with kid gloves, they will bite off your hand.
**********************************************************
Tammany-stan
I continue to be struck by something Marine Sgt. Maj. Jim Sauer (ret.) wrote, that you can rent an Afghan but you can’t buy him.
This is a terrible concept to grasp while watching the US trying to buy Afghans by the thousands, which is the cornerstone of the Bush-Obama “counterinsurgency” plan to win Afghan hearts and minds. Did I say win hearts and minds? This is about buying hearts and minds, and it isn’t pretty. The US is spreading big dough and oodles of stuff across Afghanistan in exchange, the lonely-hearts, I mean, counterinsurgency, theory goes, for Afghan loyalty. As Gen.McChrystal puts it to villagers wherever he goes: “What do you need?”
**********************************************************
The rules murdering our troops:
When enemy action kills our troops, it’s unfortunate. When our own moral fecklessness murders those in uniform, it’s unforgivable.
In Afghanistan, our leaders are complicit in the death of each soldier, Marine or Navy corpsman who falls because politically correct rules of engagement shield our enemies.
Mission-focused, but morally oblivious, Gen. Stan McChrystal conformed to the Obama Way of War by imposing rules of engagement that could have been concocted by Code Pink:
* Unless our troops in combat are absolutely certain that no civilians are present, they’re denied artillery or air support.
* If any civilians appear where we meet the Taliban, our troops are to “break contact” — to retreat.

Obama vs. McChrystal?
Reading Gen. McChrystal’s Afghanistan assessment is easier than reading tea leaves, but judging by the murkiness of the debate about Afghanistan, few in the media or politics have read it. I say this having watched public discussion turn disagreement over troops levels into The Question of Consequence regarding overall strategy. Conservatives, listening to “the commander in the field,” play McChrystal as The Hawk who wants to crush America’s enemies into rubble (or, at least, more rubble than they are already in) as opposed to Obama The Wimp, whose hesitation and apparently dwindling support for a “surge” in Afghanistan threaten to turn McChrystal’s winning strategy into a politically correct and ineffective recipe for defeat.
But what really separates Obama and McChrystal? Judging by publicly available statements and writings, nothing much. Which is why — prediction time — McChrystal probably won’t quit when Obama gives him fewer forces than McChrystal is asking for.
Why? If you read McChrystal’s report, the general makes it very clear that his change in strategy, not his change in troop levels, is his top priority. But this change in strategy is almost always left out of debate — and certainly out of the conservative end of the debate, which focuses on giving the general the forces he wants to win. What McChrystal actually wants to win — the support of the Afghan people, which is the basis of his new strategy — is never mentioned.
This strategy change to “population protection” at the expense of “force protection” (or, better, this strategy change intensification because certainly key aspects of such a policy have long been in place) is in fact a politically correct and ineffective recipe for defeat, and, therefore, something right up the boss’s [Obama] alley.

This is the real meat of the whole point of this thread, as I quote from the first link provided above.
As the WH has basically said, with concurrence from the rest of this horrid Administration, winning isn’t ‘necessary’.
That reason alone, in Obama’s own words (which I’m not quoting but don’t feel need to), is why I now want our troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq. I don’t want our honored and honorable people being killed if victory isn’t part of the WH plan.

Deciding what to do in Afghanistan requires a hard-nosed assessment of the costs of the war, the alleged benefits of victory and the likelihood of success.
But might the benefits be worth the costs? President Obama says we have to prevent Afghanistan from becoming “an even larger safe haven from which Al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans.” But defeating the Taliban in Afghanistan isn’t the key to thwarting Al Qaeda. Indeed, even if our counterinsurgency and nation-building efforts exceed all expectations, the Afghan government will still have only limited authority over much of the country and will be unable to prevent Al Qaeda cells from relocating there.
Moreover, Al Qaeda doesn’t need lots of territory or elaborate bases to plot attacks and other conspiracies; all it needs are safe houses in various parts of the world and a supply of potential martyrs. Al Qaeda clones already exist in Yemen, Somalia and elsewhere; so denying its founders a “safe haven” in Afghanistan will not make that network less lethal. If Al Qaeda is our main concern, fighting in Afghanistan is increasingly a distraction.
Fortunately, pulling US troops out of Afghanistan will not make Al Qaeda stronger. If the Taliban regain power, they may conclude it is too risky to let Osama bin Laden return. But even if they did, a backward and landlocked country like Afghanistan is a poor location from which to attack the United States, which is why the 9/11 plot was conducted out of Hamburg, Germany. If Al Qaeda’s founders have to hide somewhere, better in Afghanistan than anywhere else.
And hide they will, because Afghanistan won’t be a safe haven. Bin Laden could operate somewhat freely there before 9/11, because the United States wasn’t going after him all-out. Those days are long gone. The Taliban will not be able to protect him from US commandos, cruise missiles and armed drones. He and his henchmen will always have to stay in hiding, which is why even an outright Taliban victory will not enhance their position very much.
In short, US victory in Afghanistan won’t put an end to Al Qaeda, and getting out won’t make it more dangerous. And if the outcome in Afghanistan has little effect on the threat Al Qaeda poses, there is little reason to squander more American blood and treasure there.

General McChrystal has bought into the argument that there are those in the Islamic culture of Afghanistan that want what we have and need and want our help. He is wrong, and, to quote yet another scripture, ‘he has left his first love.’(stolen from Rev 2:45 describing the cold heartedness of the Ephesians to the Church) has been telling us that his real concern is for the safety and well-being of another people at great cost to his own. The General’s first responsibility is to his oath as it is for all sworn and elected officials. He has determined that the protection of a foreign entity, be they friendly or not (I dare say the events of the past several weeks say, not) is far more important than the lives of the Americans fighting in that foreign land.

Please. Biden has nothing to do with anything. He’s a joke. He’s kept around to take flak and take up some media time, when necessary.
The dithering is the strategy on Afghanistan. This is an intentional stall by The Precedent to achieve HIS goals of demoralizing and bleeding our troops, and those at home, until the whole Afghanistan situation turns into a total disaster, with Americans begging for a pull-out and the US being seriously hurt in all sorts of ways abroad. That is what The Precedent wants – as we all know from his World Traitor Tour – and that is what he is doing.
As soon as America comes to this simple realization, then perhaps even some of the brain-dead Blue Dogs will start to realize that The Precedent must be impeached and tossed out as soon as possible. But … I have no faith in honesty or integrity from anyone who allied with the ineligible, Indonesian traitor. They are all culpable.

They can plot more “9/11′s” from a lot more places than Afghanistan and there are probably, “best case”, parts of Afghanistan that we will never control anyway. 9/11 was plotted mainly from Hamburg and financed mainly from Saudi Arabia. The attacks in Britain were plotted in Pakistan and Britain, not Afghanistan. The 5 to 20 “suspects” who were picked up/are under surveillance, for plotting a terrorist attack/attacks in the U.S. were not spotted in Afghanistan, but right here in America.
BTW, Islam is the “breeding” for another 9/11.

That’s an interesting article you linked to by Stephen M. Walt. I realize we can all get stuck thinking a certain way about an issue, even our military, and even the best of us.
However, this statement troubles me:
It seems to me that simply pulling our troops out of Afghanistan would have two results benefiting Al Qaeda. First, it would give them an apparent victory that could be used for recruitment, making them stronger. Secondly, it would make Afghanistan a safer place for them to hide, which would make them stronger.
Perhaps I’m misinterpreting this, though, as I am not a military strategist.
Given that Al Qaeda is ideologically and religiously driven, so adaptable, and not tied to any government, at least officially, we have an enemy that presents quite a puzzle and challenge to contain and deter, let alone defeat. So, the more brilliant minds we have working on this, the better. And I consider you as one with a brilliant mind, so have at it, please.
Loxodonta on October 24, 2009 at 10:38 PM
Imagine that the U.S. pulls out/pulls back from Afghanistan and the Taliban take over/more or less take over. Now imagine that you are OBL or any AlQ leader/plotter.
Would you rather stay in Pakistan (the most likely place for him to be if he is still alive) where we are very constrained because Pakistan is our “ally” or go back to Afghanistan where if the Taliban retook power there would be far far less constraint?
MB4 on October 24, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Key point. It will be a definite lowball and a stalling “further review”. The dithering strategy is the key.
I can’t believe that they are actually justifiying their stall by claiming that ‘things change on the ground’ [slightly paraphrased]. Of course they change on the ground. He walked over and twisted a row of complicated dials. “Switch on No. 8 auxiliary!” he shouted. “Switch on No. 8 auxiliary!” repeated Lieutenant Graham. “Full strength in No. 3 turret!” shouted Biden. “Full strength in No. 3 turret!” The crew, bending to their various tasks in the huge, hurtling eight-engined Navy hydroplane, looked at each other and grinned. “Old Man Biden’ll get us through,” they said to one another. “Old Man Biden ain’t afraid of hell!”

Obama is certainly driven by liberal, leftist and far leftist ideologies. However, there is one thing in the world more important than ideology to Obama. And that one thing is Obama. As long as Americans let him get away with his ideological campaign, he will continue. However, I’m thinking that sometime around the summer of 2010, the outlook for him retaining a fawning Congress will be so bleak that we are going to see the start of Clintonian Triangulation Two, and Obama will suddenly become a moderate in the hope of saving his Congress, but even more importantly in the hope of saving his own re-election in 2012.

I’d prefer more Machievelli and less cheese sauce in my next serving, please. It’s getting runny.

Isn’t all of this just the “Don’t Mess With Joe” strategy? Just knowing it’s Biden’s plan will throw enough fear into the hearts of the enemy to cause them to surrender immediately.

Yes, I believe you’re right; but they actually surrendered because they were afraid to pee their pants from laughing so hard.

Sorry, Lox, but that isn’t what I see, at all. The Precedent, by my estimation, is not driven by leftist ideology. He likes marxism, becaue he thinks all the cool kids like it, but he doesn’t give a damn about that. He is driven by a need to exact revenge on us. He sees himself as an avenging angel of the third world, come to rain down pain and suffering on America. He is here to destroy us – as he shows every single day, as he demeans and denigrates every traditional American concept, more, or law, insults the character and nature of this nation, and promotes not much of anything instead, outside of consolidation under centralized government control, in Washington. It is a simple-minded politics for a simple-minded person. But his aim with every ounce of power, is to harm America and, if he’s lucky, take us down.
Be aware, though, that he doesn’t really care about his own political fortunes. He is a political suicide bomber. He’s not going to stop for anyone, any Congress, or anything. The more Congress turns against him, the more racial animus he tries to stir up, as he did during the tea parties/town halls, very explicitly. He’s going to take this nation down with him, if he can. Think of Saddam Hussein dumping 40,000,000 barrels of oil into the gulf and lighting just about every oil well in Kuwait on fire, all as he was being allowed to retreat in one of the most humiliating military losses in human history. That is the sort of situation we have, at least by my view.

Joe Biden is a plant. The only thing remaining unclear is whether he is a tuber or root vegetable.

Slow Joe the Plagiary Biden came up with a plan a plan of his own. No sarc tag needed.

I know you may be correct. I do see aspects of that in his far-left ideology. However, I think you’re mostly wrong. Or, perhaps I hope you’re mostly wrong.
We’ll probably have a lot more evidence if it becomes clear that we can take back the House. Then, if Obama continues down the path of destruction, you will be correct, and our country and the world will be in grave danger. But if Barry starts triangulating, things will improve for us and the world. Of course, if Americans can’t figure out what he’s up to, as not enough of us did with Clinton, then we may have another four more years in which Obama can try to push through his radical dreams where Congress has less power than the Commander in Chief.
I guess I don’t even hope you’re wrong. It;s more like I’m praying you’re wrong.
