Did Democrats put ACORN in charge of regulation for financial institutions?

posted at 9:00 am on October 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

From the pages of Government Doesn’t Listen, Part MMXLVII, we have this stunning example from the House Financial Services Committee.  Yesterday, Reps. Maxine Waters, Barney Frank, and the rest of the Democrats decided to grant community organizers governing powers by giving them a role in shaping and enforcing new regulations on the American financial industry.  That seems to include, although not explicitly, ACORN:

During consideration of H.R. 3126, legislation to establish a Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA), Democrats on the House Financial Services Committee voted to pass an amendment offered by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) that will make ACORN eligible to play a role in setting regulations for financial institutions.

The Waters amendment adds to the CFPA Oversight Board 5 representatives from the fields of “consumer protection, fair lending and civil rights, representatives of depository institutions that primarily serve underserved communities, or representatives of communities that have been significantly impacted by higher-priced mortgages” to join Federal banking regulators in advising the Director on the consistency of proposed regulations, and strategies and policies that the Director should undertake to enforce its rules.

By making representatives of ACORN and other consumer activist organizations eligible to serve on the Oversight Board, the amendment creates a potentially enormous government sanctioned conflict of interest. ACORN-type organizations will have an advisory role on regulating the very financial institutions from which they receive millions of dollars annually in direct corporate contributions and benefit from other financial partnerships and arrangements. These are the same organizations that pressured banks to make subprime mortgage loans and thus bear a major responsibility for the collapse of the housing market.

Parsing this carefully, it does not appear that Democrats on the HFSC explicitly included ACORN on this panel.  Instead, the Waters amendment leaves spots open for representatives from organizations like ACORN, and probably does nothing to exclude ACORN representatives for consideration on these slots.  The headline and lead on this release seem to be somewhat misleading in stating that Waters explicitly added ACORN as a regulator.

However, that doesn’t make the amendment any better.  It would not matter whether these institutions were holier than the Church, more all-American than the Boy Scouts, more trustworthy than the Marines, and better looking than Hannah Giles.  Regulation should be precise and enforced by the government, not made up as a board makes up arbitrary strategies as it goes along. As the article points out, these groups will have conflicts of interest with some or all of these financial institutions, which makes their inclusion even more odd.

Congress has a duty to pass rational regulation that can be precisely and consistently enforced without “strategies” and agendas, or better yet, just provide resources to enforce the regulation we already have.

In California, Mexican Consulate workers have been identified going into ACORN offices by the DOZENS! (how can you tell, one might ask, if they are Mexican Consulate Workers? By the DIPLOMATIC LICENSE PLATES on their cars)
ACORN is STILL involved with the 2010 census, NOTHING has changed.

How about us setting ‘Retirement Fund Accounts’ for each of the sleaziest Congress critters. More or less bribe them to retire, with the requirement that they cannot run for office ever again or lobby. In return, we donate, say, 10 million to that account for them to use as they see fit.

It would open up seats that are hard to win due to their incumbency, stops them from passing any more sewer gas, and gives them more loot than could normally steal in 6-12 years.

MSGTAS on October 24, 2009 at 9:47 AM

I’m not sure which I find more disturbing, the fact that no one seems to care about sending crooks and idiots to run the government, or the crooks and idiots themselves. (If pressed, I’d probably say the former.)

Day after day, year after year, decades on end, far too few pay attention to the world around them, preferring to live in their little bubble of office schemes, soccer practice, and Dancing with the Stars. Until something directly affects them and their pocketbooks, and even then don’t seem to care. Usually the only result is throwing ones hands up and demanding that “something” be done, which only makes things worse.

It’s been said the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. I sometimes believe that the few who are vigilant are way outnumbered in a hopeless battle, and our freedom has been lost for generations.

When we are at a place where imbiciles and criminals like Waters and Franks can openly and blatently manipulate the system to personally enrich themselves and their friends, and no one even raises an eyebrow at the corruption, it is a sad day. The results of this SHOULD be investigations and criminal trials, not a congratulatory press conference.

I just heard a talking head on the FOX Sat. business programming say that these CEOs who get as much as 700 to every 1 dollar workers get are no different than a thief. The only difference is the gun the thief uses.

This is their mentality. They believe that the wealthy have gotten that way by robbing and exploiting the poor and it is their duty to rectify this through government policy and regulations.

People don’t really understand that this is it for the progressive communists. This is their chance to destroy the US and remake it into their own hellish kingdom. They won’t let elections stop them when they’re so close to realizing their dreams … something they’ve been working towards for decades. They don’t give a shyt about the law or the Constitution and they will do anything they have to to get their way.

I have no doubt when push comes to shove that Obama and his fellow communists will start using force and jailing people, shutting down free speech and the press. They’re already setting the right up for this by labeling us terrorists, unAmerican, Nazi’s and of course … racists.

They couldn’t care less if they have to jail or kill us to get their way. This is who they are … power, money and control is what they want and we stand in the way.

Maxine’s district includes Inglewood and Hawthorne:

Inglewood:In the 2000 census, blacks made up 47 percent of the city’s residents (53,060 people), and Hispanics made up 46 percent (51,829), but the Census Bureau estimated that in 2007 the percentage of blacks had declined to 41 percent (48,252) and that of Hispanics of any race were at 52.5 percent (61,847). The white population declined from 19 percent (21,505) to 17.7 percent (20,853).[12][13]

Inglewood has the highest percentage of registered Democrats of any city in California, with 75.6 percent of its 48,615 voters registered in May 2009 as Democrats. Seven percent were registered as Republicans, and 14.1 percent declined to state a preference.[16]

Hawthorne:
Race in Hawthorne

This is pretty much what Democrats in the Clinton administration did with the housing industry, which led directly to the subprime mortgage boom, the creation of mortgage-backed securities (to insure against the risk of so many bad loans), and the implosion of the housing market.

Now, the same people have set up almost exactly the same system, where political considerations weigh more than economic soundness and greedy grabbers can use the coercive power of the government to access money they could never have accesses because they have the business sense of lobotomized ferrets.

With the way demographics are going, Maxine, or someone like her, will be the norm for the elected officials of your grandchildren. And there ain’t nothin’ you can do about it.

Proof that the House Ethics Committee should be taken out and executed.

Water’s district is 75% Dem, so good luck getting anyone elected there who doesn’t believe as Waters does that the Feds owe her constituency more than they pay in taxes.

2010 is going to be the Democrats’ 9-11. The smart ones will see it coming and will bail on Waters, et al.

SERIOUS QUESTION:
HOW DO WE STOP THE IDIOTS?

I know, I know. Arm myself with the facts. Call and write letters to my representatives. March in the wind and rain holding pithy signs about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and how they must STOP TREADING ON ME. I’m talking to people so much they think I am an ‘extremist’. I’m not, BUT THEY NEED TO HEAR WHAT I AM SAYING! If I could beat it into them I would! I’m getting out the vote, I’m talking to the county about being a precinct committee person. I’m bringing in candidates to talk to our Tea Party group and we are learning to ask, without shouting, the hard questions. I’m adding post after post to Facebook and Twitter.

WHAT ELSE?!?!?!?!?!

Yellowdog12 on October 24, 2009 at 11:25 PM

If ANYONE thinks there will be actual free, fair and open elections in 2010 and 2012, you should back away from the crack pipe, it AIN’T happening folks.

And all of your efforts will end up being a waste of time.
What ELSE should you do? I think you KNOW the answer, you just don’t want to admit it.

nelsonknows on October 24, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Well, I can’t do anything about the one I’m thinking about (removal from office ain’t happening with these idiots in office).

And maybe all my efforts WILL be a waste of time, but at least I haven’t given up.

OK, I’ll say it. I am willing to die for this country if it would right the wrongs we’ve allowed since the founding documents were written. And since I’m not, presently, in a position to do that, I’m actually looking for valid ideas and information. If anyone has any, please share.

Have it right, the gerrymandered Districts in California have allowed the Genes of the ‘Da Mayor’ and Assembly Chair for years Rep. Willie Brown to be inculcated into Maxine Waters. As a matter of fact I am waiting for her to utter the words of Willie Brown before the Assembly on ascending to its Chairmanship. “I ain’t never had control over sooooo much Honkey money in my life.”
