Poll: Americans more skeptical of anthropogenic global warming
posted at 8:20 pm on October 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Gee, I wonder why? After the coldest first two weeks in October for Minnesota in recorded history, small wonder Pew Research finds rising skepticism for the hypothesis that man causes global warming. Only slightly over a third of Americans believe that any warming to be found should be blamed on humans, the product of ten years of declining temperatures despite increases in CO2 emissions:
There has been a sharp decline over the past year in the percentage of Americans who say there is solid evidence that global temperatures are rising. And fewer also see global warming as a very serious problem – 35% say that today, down from 44% in April 2008.
The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Sept. 30-Oct. 4 among 1,500 adults reached on cell phones and landlines, finds that 57% think there is solid evidence that the average temperature on earth has been getting warmer over the past few decades. In April 2008, 71% said there was solid evidence of rising global temperatures.
Over the same period, there has been a comparable decline in the proportion of Americans who say global temperatures are rising as a result of human activity, such as burning fossil fuels. Just 36% say that currently, down from 47% last year.
Some might attribute this to a partisan divide over cap-and-trade policies, but Pew’s internals show a broad-based retreat on athropogenic global warming (AGW), now given the politically-correct euphemism of “climate change.” Support for the hypothesis fell among Republicans, independents, and Democrats over the last three years. In 2006, 91% of Democrats believed in AGW; that number has declined 16 points to 75%. Two years ago, almost two-thirds of Republicans believed it, now down 27 points to 35%.
Most politically damaging, though, is the sharp decline in support from independents. AGW has lost 26 points in three years among unaffiliated voters, and 22 points of that drop came in the past year. The arc has bent sharply towards decline, and with cap-and-trade legislation percolating in Congress, that could present some real problems. Additionally, Pew notes that regional declines in AGW belief have been strongest in the Midwest — not surprising, given the damage cap-and-trade will do to interior states — and the West, where belief has fallen 19 points. Belief has fallen by double digits in all age demographics and all education demographics.
Pew finds that a majority of adults support limits on carbon emissions, 50%/39% — but that the public has not heard much about the legislation. That will also be a problem for Democrats, as Pew finds. Those who have heard “a lot” about cap-and-trade oppose it 64%/32%, which does not bode well especially for moderate Democrats.

So 36% believe man is warming the planet… Isn’t that number strikingly similar to Bush’s approval ratings toward the end of his Administration?
I guess we’ll hear from the left that the consensus is that man is NOT responsible for global warming. That’s what matters, right? The consensus?
Or so I was told.

“What’s this?” thought Barack Obama. “I can feel nothing warmer at all! That is terrible. Am I stupid? Am I a flat-earther? Am I a denier? Am I not fit to be President? That would be the most dreadful thing that could happen to me. “Oh, it is very hot!” Obama said aloud. “It has my highest approbation.” And Obama nodded in a contented way, and gazed outside, for he would not say that he felt no Global Warming. The whole entourage that he had with him looked and looked, and felt no warming, any more than the rest; but, like Barack Obama they said, “It is so hot!” and Rahm Emanuel counseled him to always say that he felt hot when he was out in public, even hotter than all the Chicago troubles were making them both feel. “It is warm, hot even!” went from mouth to mouth. On all sides there seemed to be general warming, and Barack Obama gave Al Gore the title of Imperial Master of Global Warming Science.
So Barack Obama went in procession, and every one in the streets said, “How incomparable hot it is! What a hot day it is!” No one would let it be perceived that he could not feel warming, for that would have shown that he was not fit for his office, or was very stupid or a flat-earther or a denier. No day of Barack Obama’s had ever been as hot as this one.
“But I’m freezing my ass off out here!” a little child from Minnesota cried out at last. “Just hear what that innocent says!” said Ed Morrissey: and one whispered to another what the child had said. “But it is cold out here!” said the whole people at length. That touched Barack Obama, for it seemed to him that they were right; but the thought within himself was, “I must go through with feeling all the Global Warming. I do not dare to do otherwise” And so he held himself a little higher, and his aides held on tighter than ever, and proclaimed the Global Warming which did not exist at all.

Gee, science determined by polling….
Global climate change is a natural event; it has happened many times since earth has been livable. It is hubris in the extreme to think/believe that man can be the sole determinant of climate.
Yes, conservation and doing what we can to keep this place clean is a good goal, but when we are talking about billions and trillions spent on trying to “fight” something that has no basis in science, we are showing ourselves to be gullible in the extreme.
The global climate change movement is not about saving the earth; it is all about re-ordering the global economic system.
And, there will be those who, if this thing is made law, will gain in the hundreds of billions over a very short period of time. The Goracle from Tennessee is but one of the charlatans who will gladly take your money to enrich themselves…while millions and millions starve or find themselves forced to the bottom of the economic system.
if this global climate change is based on real science, one would think that challenging it and submitting all of it to testing and retesting and challenge after challenge would be desired…but, any challenge is now viewed as sacrilege, and those doing the necessary scientific challenging are viewed as some sort of enemy of mankind. This, in itself, should be adequate proof that Global Climate Change, especially anthropogenic global warming/change, is not science.
Has there been any other recorded scientific breakthrough or path of discovery that was ever based on polling of a largely ignorant citizenry?

THREE: You shall not ever take the name of thee Goracle thine Oracle in vain.
FOUR: Remember My birthday, and keep it carbon free unless you have credits that you bought from Me.
FIVE: Honor Me instead of your father and your mother especially if they don’t believe in Global Warming.
SIX: You shall not ever malign Me or else you be apostates.
SEVEN: You shall not commit adultery with My wife, but I can with your wife and daughters and goats.
EIGHT: You shall not ever steal My carbon credits.
NINE: You shall not raise any challenges to the most holy doctrine of Global Warming.
TEN: You shall not covet any of My mansions; you shall not covet My private jets, nor My SUV’s, nor My pizza, nor My Krispe Kreame dounuts, nor My Biggie Fries, nor My hot Fudge sundaes.

There are two kinds of environmentalist.
There’s the kind who notice that killing off the wolves in Yellowstone leaves the deer and antelope free to denude the countryside. Or that prescribed burns on national forest cuts down on fuel for wildfires and opens the seed pods for the next generation of trees. These type of people are heros.
Then there are the type of enviros who file lawsuits to stop the Navaho from building a coal powerplant. They don’t care about supposed impacts. What they are concerned with are non governmental contractors not using Union labor. Can’t have that. The public belief in AGW is just their club of conveneince.

Rush uses the word hoax. While that may be true, to me, it implies a conspiracy. That I do not believe. It is more of a bad science “groupthink.” Look up and educate yourself on the scientific method then whenever you get into an argument/discussion with a global warming believer, just ask them how they believe “Man-made global warming comports with the scientific method?” Then explain that evolution and plate tectonics are theories and the research supports them. How does it support man-made global warming? They can’t answer it logically! It’s fun as long as you know your facts. Just smile and ask questions. If they call you names, smile, and state that’s what small people who are out of ideas and don’t know the facts do. It should take about 10 minutes of googling to learn the scientific method. Enjoy!

Again, my five points that every person wanting cap-and-trade must believe in:
1) The earth is warming
2) That’s a bad thing
3) It’s caused by human activity
4) We can stop it
5) We can only stop it by increasing governmental control of the private sector
All arguements by global warming advocates must address these points. Unless of course they’re making an emotional arguement or have ulterior motives.
Meric1837 on October 23, 2009 at 9:14 PM
This AGW reminds me of a gory scene from Apocalypto by Mel Gibson. At the top of the mayan temple, hostages are having their hearts ripped out to save the world from an impending eclipse. The eclipse comes and hearts are ripped out at an increasing pace. Eventually the sun returns and and the crowd screams in approval seeing that the human sacrifices worked.
The head wizard turns to the other wizards and we see his face as his back is turned to the screaming throng. We can see in his face a smirk. At that instant we know what he knows. The whole thing is a fraud. Of course the sun will return. He knew it would return. The human suffering had nothing to do with the predictable natural event. It had everything to do with him maintaining POWER.

Look at that chart in the preview. Why would a scientific issue breakdown like that? Why wouldn’t Democrats and Republicans equally believe or not believe the science presented in the news? The graph makes clear, Republicans are more skeptical than Democrats. That the liberal mind is more accepting to authority, more willing to move in lock-step with what they are told, and therefore less able to think for themselves. They read it in the paper, it must be true. Or, it could be the liberals knee-jerk reaction kicking in; earth good, people bad, and the United States worse. It could also be that the liberal mind feels the need to believe the sky is falling? Sounding the alarm helps them feel important and needed. And, if they can sound that alarm first, well then, they’re better than you. From the DDT scare that ended up killing millions of Africans, to the Three-Mile Island scare that halted our nuclear energy program, to the Alar scare and now global warming; it’s one bad-science after another promoted with a liberal clarion call. Then they pat themselves on the back and shrug off any responsibility of the damage done, and move on, zombie-like, toward their next feel-good cause.
Ricardo Montalban said, “You know Johnny, I’d rather look good than feel good.” For the liberal, they would rather feel good, than do good. Be proud to be a conservative that thinks with a skeptical mind and critical eye.
jim4hotair on October 23, 2009 at 9:22 PM
If every liberal would volunteer for Doctor assisted suicide we would cut the co2 output nearly in half. Taxes would go down because liberals must not pay taxes for it is stupid to profess something against self interest. The demand on the food supply would be reduced. A small portion of the job market would open. Conservatives would have a chance to get tenure at university and freedom would be preserved.

Who knew that scare tactics and negative ads would backfire???
What killed “global warming”? The prospect of people losing their jobs and homes and damaging their futures. Rather than encourage retrofitting the economy, buildings and lifestyles to become more carbon neutral, proponents of “global warming” tried to scare people. Guess what, it didn’t work. All that time, money and effort has been wasted.
For those who say that the planet is in peril, I say “then shouldn’t something be done about it?” They never have an answer, just sneering.

Our rise in the world economy to the top was due to our usage of more energy per capita than anyone else. This can be demonstrated easily. A man, with unlimited land available to him but no power beyond his own muscles, can only farm a small plot. He has to clear it with an axe, dig up stumps, push the plow, manually insert seeds etc. Note that I have allowed him the energy intensive tool, steel. His economic output is puny, barely enough to sustain him alone.
Contrast this to a man with a two cycle chainsaw and tiller. Running those two items all day, you will use less than ONE gallon of gas per day. Our current per capita consumption is still near the top, per 2003 data. Energy consumption produces real wealth.
A century ago, our industries were much more inefficient and dirty. It made sense to impose some regulation on pollution, and benefits accrued thereof. But the government never knows when to stop. Is some is good, more is better. Even if it destroys our economy. AGW is the hammer they are using to break it.
GnuBreed on October 23, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Not people, sunspots. The earth has warmed in the past without human assistance. It has also cooled in the past without human assistance. There is zero chance that it won’t warm up again at some point. There is also zero chance that it won’t cool off again at some point. And humans will have nothing to do with it.
Humans rank well behind most other animals in terms of production of dangerous gasses. We’re really thinking of saving nature by killing off animals? Cuz that’s what the UN is advocating.
